4 PREPARING YOUR MACHINE FOR WORK

WORK SAFELY-FOLLOW THESE RULES

A Do not allow the snow stream to fall on .. anyone. It can cause serious injury.

A Keep a watchful eye for children playing in the snow, both in the path of the machine and of the snow stream.

A Only the operator should be on the tractor when in motion. Do not permit anyone to ride the blower frame.

A Keep hands, feet and clothing away from .. all moving parts.

Illust. 4A

UNIVERSAL JOINT

The 34" universal joint provided with the snow blower will fit any tractor conforming to A. S. A. E. specifications.

This may be checked by setting the lower links level with the 540 R. P. M. power take-off shaft on the tractor. The dimension from the end of the P. T. O. shaft to the center line of the lower link pins must be at least 18" with the links being horizontal.

To attach the universal joint, compress the pin in the forward yoke and slide the yoke onto the 540 R. P. M. power take-off shaft until the pin drops into the groove on the shaft.

A IMPORTANT: Do not operate the machine above 540 R. P. M. full load power take-off speed.

When not connected to the tractor, support the universal with the lock up chain as shown at "D" in Illust. 4A.

A Before attempting to service the machine, or to clear jammed drives or a clogged chute, disengage the P. T. O. lever and

shut off the tractor engine.

A When moving onto a public road, place a slow moving vehicle emblem on the machine, and turn on warning lights as well as regu

lar tractor lights.

A Shorten the chute crank if necessary before raising the machine, to avoid damage to a cab-equipped tractor.

SHEAR BOLT PROTECTION

Shear bolts are provided on both the fan drive andauger drive to protect the drives against jamming. Extra bolts are shipped with the machine.

CAUTION: When replacing a sheared bolt, check that the cause of shearing has been corrected before starting the machine.

The fan drive is protected by a shear bolt as shown at "E" in Illust. 4A, which connects the yoke to the front shaft of the universal. Replace the bolt with a 3/8 x 211 type 5 bolt.

A The auger drive is protected by a shear bolt as shown at IIF" in Illusts. 4A and 4B, which connects the inner and outer shaft

hubs. Replace the bolt with a 5/16 x 111 type 5 carriage bolt and lock nut. Align one hole in each hub flange to place the bolt.

OPERATION OF YOUR MACHINE

BEFORE OPERA TING EACH SEASON

Lubricate the machine completely, as explained on page 8. After greasing the snow chute pi vot flanges, rotate the chute to check for free rotation.

Check that all bolts are secure, and that the shear bolts are in place and are tight. Refer to the Nut Torquing Chart on page 9.

Check the chain tension on the auger drives. Refer to page 5.

Start the tractor engine and engage the P. T. O. lever for a "dry" run of the drives. If the auger and fan are running freely, the snow blower is ready for operation.

OPERA TION OF YOUR SNOW BLOWER

Three point hitch tractors should be operated with load or draft control. Best operation can be obtained if most of the machine weight is carried by the tractor. Leave only enough weight on the snow blower skid shoes to keep it on the ground.

On tractors with a western style fixed drawbar, the raising and lowering cylinder hoses MUST be connected to tractor ports controlled by a valve with a float detent position. The snow blower MUST be operated with the control valve in the float detent position.

Move the tractor at a speed to fully utilize its capa city to clear the snow. A trickle of snow, particularly wet snow, may tend to clog the chute. However, do not move the snow blower at a speed which will push the snow.

A Should the blower become overloaded in deep snow, raise the blower about a foot and take off the upper layer, then lower the

machine for a second pass.

CARE OF YOUR MACHINE - LUBRICATION

Your machine is designed to require a minimum amount of lubrication. Care must be taken to see that bearings are lubricated their full length, until grease appears at the sides.

For your own protection, select only oil and grease of recognized manufacture. Replace missing or damaged lubrication fittings immediately.

The self-aligning sealed ball bearings used on the machine require no lubrication, as they are filled with lubricant and sealed by the manufac-

7

If the blower has been stored in a place where the temperature is above freezing, park it outdoors long enough to permit the steel to cool, to avoid icing up and consequent loss of operating efficiency.

A To clear a plugged blower chute, raise the machine a few inches with the three point hitch, then drop it. If the snow does not

drop off, stop the tractor engine and clear the chute with a stick.

SNOW BLOWER BLADE

If the blade of the snow blower eventually shows wear, a new blade is available through service parts for welding onto the frame.

SLOW MOVING VEHICLE EMBLEM

Illust. 7A HB 7558-51

A special "slow moving vehicle" emblem, as shown inIllust. 7A, is available through service parts to place on your machine when transporting it on the highwa1' Mount the emblem on the bar as shown at "D' .

turer. Never wash sealed bearings with cleaning fluid as this will dilute the lubricant in the bearings.

Occasionally oil pivot points, such as the hand crank or the hydraulic chute control lever, to ensure free operation.

Lubricate drive chains daily or after each use. 1. H. No.1 Diesel Engine Oil is recommended for longer life. Apply the oil with a paint brush. At least once a year, remove chains and clean in solvent, then soak in oil overnight.

SETTING UP INSTRUCTIONS ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS

Identify IH type 5 and type 8 bolts by the head markings and torque nuts between the range shown in the Nut Torquing Chart.

Lubricate all moving parts. Refer to the operating and adjusting section of the Operator's Manual for all adjustments.

NOTE: The terms "left" and" right" should be understood to mean as viewed from the rear (at the center of the auger) facing the tractor. The "frontll refers to the hitch end of the blower.
