1/25Tuesday: Novel Study• 7.4.10.10 By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature and other

texts including stories, dramas, and poems, in the grades 6–8 text complexity band proficiently and independently

• 7.11.6.6 Acquire and use accurately grade-appropriate general academic and domain specific words and phrases; gather vocabulary knowledge when considering a word or phrase important to comprehension or expression.

Wednesday: Writing• 7.11.2.2 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English

capitalization, punctuation and spelling when writing (a. punctuation – comma, ellipsis, dash – to indicate pause or break; b.Use ellipsis to indicate omission; c. spelling)

• 7.7.3.3 Write narratives and other creative texts to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, relevant descriptive details, and well-structured event sequences (a-e).

School Rules

• 1). You need to be in class on time every day to learn.

• 2). No backpacks, electronics (ie: cell phones, i-pods, etc.) or any kind of food/drink (ie: candy, gum, chips, pop, etc.) is allowed in the classroom or at school. All items found will be confiscated by staff and may need to be picked up by your parents.

• 3). Homework assignments are due on their due date. Late assignments will be worth 75% of the grade if they are turned in by the following Monday. They will be worth 50% of the grade if they are turned in after this time. I will not accept work that is over a week late.

your time wisely and write with detail.

• I expect you work hard, study hard, and have some fun while learning.

• I expect a lot from you, but I will support you as long as you consistently show me your best efforts.


Daily Classroom Points:• 1 point daily for preparation. • 1 point daily for participation.• Every student starts out with 45

points for preparation, and 45 points for participation.

• If you’re not here, you don’t get the points. NO excuses.

Class Procedures and ExpectationsExcused Absent• You need to come see me for missing work. It is your

responsibility to figure out what your missing the very next day or the same day. If you know you’re going to be gone, tell me ahead of time.

• I have over 80 students, you have 7 teachers. Unexcused Absent• You will get a zero on assignments, quizzes, or tests

we take in class if you are unexcused.Tardy• Be on time! I will lock the door when the bell rings. If

you’re not here, you don’t get your preparation point for the day. AND you miss out on Daily Writing. If you don’t get it on your own time, you lose that point too.


Journals• Every day I will have the projector on and a

daily writing quote or question displayed. • As soon as you come in, get your journal

notebook, take a seat and start writing/reflecting on the quote/question.

• Title and date your journal entry, and free write with detail for the first 3 minutes of class. KEEP WRITING! I don’t check for grammar, but I do check for ideas and reflection.

• You don’t need to rewrite the question or quote.

• You should be in your seat and writing by the time the bell rings. If you’re not, you don’t get your preparation point for the day.

• Return your journal and textbook by the end of the class.


Transitioning: SLANT• To get your attention when I think the

class is ready to move on to the next task, I will say “SLANT!” I will then count to 5 silently. o S = Sit up straight. o L = Lean forward. oA = Activate your thinking/Ask and

Answer. oN = Note key information. o T = Track the speaker.


Checking out Books• Textbooks stay in this classroom. • Novels/books may be checked out. Come to

me at least 1 minute before class, or stay after class if you’d like to check out a novel/book. I will record your name and the book you’re borrowing.

• If you lose a novel/book, you need to pay for it.

• Please give me the money for missing novels and library books. I will then give it to the office and get a receipt for you.


Semester 2 NEW procedures!CLEAN Room Act Reinstated

o If you leave anything behind, I’ll call your parents. Please clean up after yourself and check your desk before you leave.

Boys vs. Girlso Every month I’ll check to see which gender has more students

above 80%.o The gender who wins gets to play silent ball out on the carpet

for the last 10 minutes of class. The other gender has to stay in the classroom and study/get work done.

• NEW BOOKS FOR LIBRARY! • Instead of book talks, we’re going to do a “mock”

Printz Award debate/discussion this quarter. This will be a way for you to share your favorite books/novels and encourage others to read. Details to come.


• Pass back final tests & other HW.• Finish going through final test.o KEEP THIS!!! SOME OF THIS INFORMATION

WILL BE ON YOUR FINAL TEST AT THE END OF THE YEAR (ESPECIALLY THE VOCAB).

1. 1st – Review Punctuationo If you don’t have these in your

o Ignore brackets for now 2. Play review game (Ms. Schilz).

Dash • Dash —• In informal writing, dashes may replace

commas, semicolons, colons, and parentheses to indicate added emphasis, an interruption, or an abrupt change of thought.

• Examples:You are the friend—the only friend—who offered to help me.

• I pay the bills—she has all the fun.A semicolon would be used here in formal writing.

• I need three items at the store—dog food, vegetarian chili, and cheddar cheese.**Remember, a colon would be used here in formal writing.

ParenthesesParentheses ( )Rule 1: Use parentheses to enclose words or figures that clarify or are used as an aside.• Example: I expect five hundred dollars

($500).Rule 2: Use full parentheses to enclose numbers or letters used for listed items.• Example: We need an emergency room

physician who can (1) think quickly, (2) treat patients respectfully, and (3) handle complaints from the public.

Ellipses • Ellipses …• Rule 1. Use ellipses when material

has been omitted from a direct (word-for-word) quotation, whether the omission is a word, phrase, or several sentences.

• Example: The absurdity of the situation makes me ponder Hamlet's query "whether ‘tis nobler in the mind to suffer . . . outrageous fortune."

• Rule 2: Use ellipses to indicate a pause, hesitation, or unfinished thought.• The veterinarian spoke softly, "The

poor horse is . . . was . . .”

• Review answers to Other Punctuation worksheet.

Thursday: Review• Play game to review(Ms. Schilz). • Each table gets a big sheet of paper.• Chose one student to be “it.”• When “it” says “go,” all students choose a

corner to go to and write down one thing he/she learned/remember about your study guide questions, the story, punctuation, or vocab. CAN’T HAVE 2 OF THE SAME STATEMENTS!

• “It” student will pick a corner he/she overheard, and that corner has to tell the class what they wrote, and then sit down.

• BE QUIET! The corner picked last, wins!

• What is the nicest thing anyone has ever said about you? How did it make you feel? How did you react?

• What is the worst thing anyone has ever said about you? How did it make you feel? How did you react?
