Dear Parent(s),Welcome to your child's 7th grade reading class! I am Mr. Brandhorst, your child's reading teacher, and I am anxious to begin another successful school year. I'd like to take an opportunity to share a brief overview of our reading class and the types of learning that will take place throughout this school year. The academic subject of reading in our classroom is a dynamic one! I am passionate about books, literature, authors, poets, and anything related to the written word. My intent is to stimulate students' minds so they too become lovers of reading --- if they aren't already! We will be reading a wide variety of genres ranging from realistic fiction, historical fiction, poetry, short stories, to everyday non-fiction newspaper articles! There is a tremendous array of reading variety out there, and it is imperative that students are exposed to these different forms as they grow older and more sophisticated in their approach to reading comprehension ---clearly preparing them for high school and beyond... The literary skills addressed this year can be found on the Voorhees District Website. {If you click on Administration, you will find a link for Curriculum guide; from here, scroll to Language Arts Literacy for detailed information.} Having taught this age level for many years, I am most concerned with students' improvement in vocabulary/context usage, inferencing abilities, and overall critical-thinking. This young-adult / junior-high level is a transitional one. My intent is exposing students to more challenging words and creating opportunities to think beyond the literal... These are major goals that I hope to foster among myriad others!More discussion will ensue at our annual Back-to-School Night on Thursday, September 20th from 6:00 -7:00 PM. I look forward to meeting you and sharing more about our exciting year ahead! As students were informed on Thursday, September 6th, please return the signed slip with your child, or merely drop me an e-mail confirming you read the welcome letter! Respectfully,Mr. Ed Brandhorst, BS; MS Education St. Joseph's University 7th Grade Reading Teacher (Blue Team)phone: 795-2025 ext. 5179e-mail: [email protected]

Vocabulary Procedure / Assessment

• As the noise of the carnival subsided, I was able to think more clearly.

• The carnival’s monotonous musical sounds kept repeating in my brain.

• The men who were noted for not supporting for their families were dubbed improvident.

• As the day waned, I could see the haze surrounding the setting afternoon sun.

• Jody went to work with unprecedented seriousness. (Use of story comprehension serves as context as well.)
