7 Reasons why south west wales needs a new hospice

description

South West Wales has one of the UK's oldest and least healthy populations. Unfortunately there is a chronic shortage of hospice services in the area to care for all these people. In 2015, Skanda Vale Hospice (between Carmarthen and Llandysul) plan to open a brand new six bedroom inpatient hospice unit to help meet this urgent need. This slideshow shares some scary statistics about how great the need is, and shows our designs for the new unit. Thanks for watching!

South West Wales has one of the oldest populations in the UK.

The older the population, the more palliative care resources are needed. Palliative care needs in South West Wales

are now 17.5% greater than the English average.

There's only one inpatient hospice to serve the whole of the Hywel Dda Health Board.

Ty Brygwyn in Llanelli is the only inpatient hospice serving the three counties of Ceredigion, Carmarthenshire & Pembrokeshire. It's a long way to travel if you are seriously ill.

The lack of hospice services means that 69% of people in South West Wales die in hospital

even though only 11% would choose to die there.

Improving palliative care is now a top priority for the Welsh Assembly Government.

The plan is to reduce the number of people dying in hospital beds by enabling people to be cared for at home, or in the community.

"Dying is a social matter; how well we care for people who are dying reflects on how we care as a society.

Advances in modern medicine and treatment have resulted in a growing population living longer with incurable diseases. Good end

of life and palliative care should be available across Wales."

One of the reasons that palliative care has become such an important issue is because of the unsustainable cost.

This graph shows the estimated cost of one days care, in each respective care location.

Page 16: 7 reasons why South Wales urgently needs a new hospice!

"At least a fifth of NHS spending pays for end of life care, and the cost of this care will rise from £20 billion in 2010

to £25 billion in 2030"

The ratio of the working population to those of retirement age will halve over the next 40 years, so the NHS will soon have much less

money available to provide hospital-based end of life care.SouRceS: 1. A Time and a Place – What people want at the end of life. Sue Ryder. July 2013.
