to give the operator the basic information necessary to obtain

reliable, consistant results from the test procedure.

SPECIFIC RESISTANCE TEST

INTRODUCTION

One of the very commonly used tests for determiningfilterability of conditioned sludge is the specific resistance(BUchner funnel) test. The sludge"is filtered through afilter paper using a Buckner funnel and time to obtain agiven volume of filtrate, or for the cake residue to beginto crack is measured. The shorter this time interval, thebetter the filterability of the sludge.

Dessicator

Vacuum flask

Vacuum hose

1 liter sample container

9 cm Buchner funnel with stopper

Collar with vacuum gauge and valve

100 ml graduated cylinder .

3-hole stopper to fit vacuum ilask

250 ml beaker

PRELIMINARY PROCEDURE

Using a plastic wash bottle with distilledwater, wet the filter while applying a gentlevacuum. Use three Washes of about 20 ml each.

After they have been washed and dryed,the filters may be stored in a desiccatoruntil needed.

1. REMOVE FILTERS FROM'DESICCATOR.

Use forceps.

2. WEIGH FILTERS.

Record the weights of the filters tofour decimal places.

3. PLACE FUNNEL ON COLLAR. $t

Place Buchner funnel on collar.

4. ATTACH COLLAR.

Attach collar to 100 ml graduated cylinder.

5. CONNECT VACUUM SOURCE.

Connect vacuum source to vacuum flask.

6. ATTACH VACUUM LINE.

. Attach vacuum line to'collar and vacuum flask.

7. PLACE MUSLIN CLOTH MAT IN BUCHNER FUNNEL.

8. SEAT FILTER.

9. DISCARD LIQUID.

After weighing filters place two 9,cm filtersin the Buchner funnel making sure all theholes in the funnel-are covered. Wet the

filters with distilled water and.seat byapplying vacuum. Apply 40 cm (15.75 inchesof Hg) vacuum to mat and filter.

Discard the liquid collected in the 100 mlgraduated cylinder from the seating procedure.

10. RE-ATTACH COLLAR TO 100 ml GRADUATED CYLINDER.

Measure 100 grams of conditioned sludge andplace in,a 250 ml beaker.

12. ADD SAMPLE AND START TIMER.

On a portion of the conditioned sludge run apercent solids tqst. (See- procedure in SUp-'4plementary Materilals)' Pour the conditioned 1

, sludge into the Buchner funnel and apply vacuumand start timer. Apply 40 cm (15.75 inches ofHg) vacuum to mat and filter.

INTERPRETATION

In general, it can be stated that the faster a sludge de- '

waters (the shorter the time to obtain a given volume of fil-trate) the better the filtrability of the sludge.

A second'indicator of sludge filterability is.the durationof time needed for the cake to begin to crack. Again, thegeneral interpretatiorris that the shorter the,.time intervalthe more filtrable the sludge. In both of the above casesthere is a range where this interpretatioa is reliable.- Tooshort of time intervals or too long could indicate problemswith the sludge. Experience with the process unit you areworking with' will dictate these limits.

In general, sludge cakes thV have higher % solids are aresult of a mohe filtrable sludg. Al'so lower % moisture inthe cake would indicate a superior sludge. If the percentmoisture recovered.is high this would indicate a sludge thatdewaters more readily.

All aspects of this test should be used to predict whatconditioning is more effective for a given sludge.

A series of specific resistance tests can be run on sludgetreated wjth various doses of chemical conditioners. Specificresistance is plotted against chemical concentration of a givenconditioner. A curve as follows can be obtained.

Using these curves optimum chemical dosages are found. In

general, we can state that the lower the specific resistancethe better filtrability of the sludge.

line of data plotting filtrate per time vs. time must be cal-

culated. l'he following data must be collected and plotted:

time/volume vs. volume of filtrate.

specific volume (V) the corresponding time/volume (T/V) value.

Since the plot starts are zero zero the fraction (T/V)/V

is the slope of the line.

INTRODUCTION

In order to properly set pumping rates in a wastewater plant,operators must know how much water a given volume of sludgecontains. The test is a modification of the total solidstest.

EQUIPMENT

Porcelain evaporating dish ibo ml or 200 mlBalance - accurate to 0.1 gDrying oven set at 1030C.

PROCEDURE

41. CLEAN PORCELAIN DISH.

Use acid cleaning solution and rubber gloves.Residues are difficult to remove and mayhave to be scrubbed out with steel wool.Wash in hot, soapy water and rinse thoroughlywith final rinse in distilled water.

2. PLACE DISH IN 103°C. OVEN.

Leave dishes in oven until rady to use.

3. USING DISH HOLDER, REMOVE DISH FROM OVEN.

Allow it to cool on asbestos pad for 15minutes.

4. "WEIGH DISH. \

Weigh to nearest 0.1 g and record as dishweight.

5. MIX SLUDGE SAMpLE WITH GLASS ROD.

Add well-mixed sample to dish until dish is2/3 full.

'. RE-WEIGH DISH AND SAMPLE TO NEAREST 0.1 q.

By subtracting, find weight of sample.

7 PLACE DISH ON STEAM TABLE.

Table should be producing steam before dishis placed in position. Remove two or threerings to allow dish to sit down in table.Make sure water iS running,through tableand that the overflow tube is functioning.CAUTION: Do not let table run out of'wateror heating element may be burned out.

8. REMOVE DISH AND WEIGH.

After the water in the sample has evaporated,remove the dish, dry off the outside of thedish, and weigh to the nearest 0.1 g. Re-cprd as dish plus residue weight.

9. PLACE DISH IN ACID BAlli TO SOAK.

CALyLATIONS
