Tribute Jean and Trevor Pickering Reluctantly, and with much gratitude the committee must report the loss of a much valued couple who now feel the burden of increasing years. Jean and Trevor Pickering are founder members of the Wolds U3A in Driffield and have both given over 26 years as members of the committee. It was to Jean we turned to when we wished to organise a social occasion which she always accomplished with efficiency, charm, and grace. Trevor was a chairman of quiet authority, and a treasurer who kept us on the narrow path of rectitude. Their contributions to debates were always worthwhile and apposite. We wish them both many more years of married bliss.

Walking Group September break in Northumbria. For our trip this year we decided to book a package deal instead of travelling and finding accommodation independently. This was so much better, all being in the same hotel, a party of 44 including our guests from Bridling-ton U3A. The four day break started with a visit to Beamish open air museum, a great place and well worth a second visit, on route to the hotel. Our main walk day was in the Cheviot hills, centred on Wooler and with the weather ideal. A senior group member led the main walk whilst his wife led a shortened version. Both walks started on a section of St Cuthberts Way before turning off as appropriate and eventually leading back to Wooler. All in all two terrific scenic walks. Another fine day followed with an outing to Holy island, Sea-houses and Bamburgh, a small party electing to visit Alnwick castle so we dropped them off there. Ideally at least half a day is required to see all on offer on Holy island but some managed the walk around the island, whilst others visited the museum to view the Lindisfarne gospels exhibition or the Priory. Before leaving many in the party found it necessary to purchase the now famous crab sandwiches. We then visited Seahouses for our lunch stop where we sat overlooking the harbour and with a clear view of the Farne islands. Finally we visited Bamburgh, with its castle looming majestically over the small town and which together with the sand dunes protects a gloriously sited cricket pitch. On the way back we collected the Alnwick visitors and were entertained with the tale of one member who can now be viewed facebook attempting to get airborne on his broomstick at the Harry Potter attraction. On the return day we visited the village of Escomb, nearby to Bishop Auckland, to visit the historic Anglo Saxon

church, following which some returned to town via coach whilst others chose to walk back, assuming a pleasant stroll alongside the river Wear. This last minute path change was not known to us but was thought to be OK. However, we soon found a section of both riverbank and path missing, removed by recent flooding, a local walker directed us to a diversion which was both extremely steep and slippery in places, necessitating the manhandling of several ladies over these obstacles. Although it must be said that at least one lady is look-ing forward eagerly to next years expedition! Finally in Bishop Auckland for a visit to the castle and its grounds, home to the Prince Bishops of Durham and then home. Philip Dunn, Walking group leader.

Tai Chi The group decided to leave the U3A and continue as a non U3A activity, This is because the paid tutor took all responsibility of the group which was against the ethos of the U3ATrust.

U3A Christmas Concerts U3A Christmas Concert 2016 with the Brandenburg Singers and Organ. Due to popular demand from U3A members, there are three Christmas concerts this year, it is the same program at all three. 7th December 2016 - Matinee 2.00pm and Evening 5.30pm 12th December 2016 - Matinee 2.00pm Designed to whet your appetite for the coming season, the concert will include traditional carols and be enhanced by the gentle glow of mulled wine and mince pies. The concert will be introduced and conducted by Bob Porter, the Brandenburg Choral Festival of London's Artistic Director. The Chapel belongs to her Majesty the Queen in her Right as Duke of Lancaster. It is a 'free' chapel or 'peculiar', not falling within any bishop's jurisdiction, but remaining within the Church of England. It is the last surviving building of a hospital founded by Henry VII for homeless people in 1512. It is a beautiful, intimate space for concerts with a fine acoustic and splendid Walker organ. The Brandenburg Singers is a small hand-picked group drawn from the finest of the members of the 150 choirs that perform in the Brandenburg Choral Festival of London. They will perform a balanced programme of familiar Festive repertoire alongside traditional carols with the audience, interspaced with topical readings and a couple of surprises. Tickets: £19.00 per person including programme, mulled wine and mince pie. Seating is unreserved. Booking information on Wolds U3A Website.

Possible Study Day at Saltaire, Wednesday, March 1 5th at 1 0. 1 5am Saltaire is a World Heritage Site, where in 1853 Titus Salt, a philanthropist, built a cotton mill and model village with the welfare of his workers very much in mind. The day would start at 10.15, at Salts Mill. In the afternoon, at 2.30.pm, we would gather at the United Reformed Church opposite. Titus Salt gave this church to the occupants of the village. We will be shown around the Model Village by people in costume, the tour would also include the ‘Almhouses’ The cost would be £10.00 per person We are very much aware that some groups have already been to Saltaire, so be-fore we make a Firm booking, it would be useful to know if there is sufficient interest in this event, Will you therefore, Telephone me, Beth Rudkin, on 01226 241477, or Email me on [email protected]

Because there is lunch provided, will you let Hazel Ward, our secretary know the numbers expected from your U3A. [email protected] Note, it doesn’t just have to be committee members – any members are welcome
