We have finished half a school year and yet another more rigorous half to go. I like to take the to thank all the parents and guardians for the continued strong support and share our collective dream for the children in NHJS. For all the staff and students reading, I like to give you a pat on the back for being resilient and determined in your daily work. I like to share three thoughts with the community. This is in part from my reading of Li Ka-shing’s memoir. Other than being one of the richest person in Asia, Li has been know to be a philanthropist and a strong advocate for education. In particular, education of a whole person. Li shared that everyone has the potential to be a leader and everyone can be a leader. A leader does not need to be the head of a corporation or organisation. Anyone who has an influence over others is considered a leader and how he/she treat others will define him as a leader. His thoughts on a good leader rests on three things. Firstly, the ability to identify people, to deploy people and finally to know how to treat people (选人,用人,做人 ). My sharing is my personal translation of his thoughts into my life and not representative of anyone else. I like to translate these learning into school context and our daily life. Let’s start with 选人, choosing the people we should mingle with. In a biblical sense, we are often told to choose our companions carefully too. If we choose to be in the company of a group of people with positive energy and engaging in doing good, we will be influenced and the synergy of the group can go great good to others. Conversely , the choice to be in the company of a group indulgent in unhealthy habits will likewise influence others to also adopt the bad habits. My caution for everyone is to choose wisely and beware of how you are quietly being influenced and shaped by your company. Be in the company of those with a good heart and good habits. Next, the choice of your deployment, 用人, rests on the premise of you having chosen to be in good company. It is not about making use of people for your own ends but rather, how you bring out the best of others. As a decent human being, we should not only want goodness for ourselves but also goodness for others. In our prayers, it should be directed for others to be equally and abundantly blessed, as much as it is for us. Translated to school, it is about your choice of knowing what you know and do not know and know who to go to in order to seek out the knowledge. In Confucian term, it is the journey to seek wisdom - 知之为知之,不知为不知,是知也. It is leveraging on others to know what you know and do not know. Learning in class and outside the class today is making sense of the myriad of information available. Discern between what is true and what is not. There is too much fake news around. Finally, the lesson on how to be a decent human being -做人 . The way we treat others will be a reflection of who we are, where we come from and can be predictable of who we will be. The golden rule in the Holy book is – do unto others what you like others do unto you. Confucius taught a similar lesson -己所不为 勿施于人. Which means what you do not want others to do to you, you should not do to others. In a way both are guiding principles on how we should treat others. In school we teach children to be respectful of others and anyone who makes a mistake is given the opportunity to learn and grow positively. We like this to continue and for parents to role model for the children what they like the children to grow up to be. A mother shared with me that her dream for her children is simply for them to be decent human beings. In this age and time I lament that we have started to become wary of human nature and our prayer has gone back to the basics of being a decent being. An ex-Principal colleague from Brunei sent me a text the other day which I felt is reflective and thought provoking for me and I take liberty to share it here: *THE PARADOX OF OUR TIME* 1. *We live in times when we see many humans, but not enough humanity;* 2. *We live in times when the rich have more rooms than children and the poor have more children than rooms.* 3. *We live in times when smart phones bring you closer to those who are far, but distance you from those who are close;* 4. *We live in times when we open Facebook more than the Holy Book;* 5. *We live in times when a single mother can look after 10 children, but 10 children can't look after a single mother;*

Dear everyone,

Season’s Greetings!

Firstly, the ability to identify people, to deploy people and finally to know how to treat people (选人,用人,做人).

In Confucian term, it is the journey to seek wisdom - “知之为知之,不知为不知,是知也”.

It is leveraging on others to know what you know and do not know. Learning in class and outside the class today is making sense of the myriad of information available. Discern between what is true and what is not. There is too much fake news around.

Finally, the lesson on how to be a decent human being -做人. In this age and time I lament that we have started to become wary of human nature and our prayer has gone back to the basics of being a decent being.

An ex-Principal colleague from Brunei sent me a text the other day which I felt is reflective and thought provoking for me and I take liberty to share it here:

*THE PARADOX OF OUR TIME* 1.

6. *We live in times when the rich walk miles to digest food, while the poor walk miles to obtain food;* 7. *We live in times when our contact lists are huge, but our relationships are poor;* 8. *We live in times when our possessions are more, but our appreciation is less;*

9. *We live in times when we know how to earn a good living, but somehow forget how to live a good life;* 10. *We live in times when many know the price of everything, but the value of nothing;*

Let this holiday be a season for you to reflect and decide your new year resolution.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
