Welcome to Istanbul,

A warm invitation to the Sixth European Cytogenetics Conference

in Istanbul,July 7-10, 2007. The site of the conference is one of the mostattractive and vivid European cities with a long and splendidtradition. Istanbul, the word stems from the Greek "eis ten polin",to the city, as Byzanz, Konstantinopolis was the city of theMediterranean world during the late antique and entire medievalperiod. Compared to it, not only Paris, London, and Vienna, butalso Rome were small and less important. Istanbul offers not onlycultural attractions spanning the antique via the medieval Byzantineto the Islamic, particularly Osman, art. It has an active modern artistscene as well. It also has the flair of a vivid international southernEuropean metropole with the well-known Turkish tradition ofhospitality where the West and the East, where Europe and theOrient, and Christianity and Islam meet in a mostly peaceful wayof mutual inspiration.We are looking forward to welcome you in the City, Istanbul.

Invitation LetterIf requested by the participants, an official invitation letter will be sent by theCongress Secretariat. Such solicited invitations, however, will not offer any paymentof expenses, such as fees, travel or hotel accommodations for the Congress.

How To Get ThereDue to its geographic positioning, Turkey has always been a bridge between theeast and the west, and this position is now even more enhanced by political,economic, and commercial restructuring developments in the region. As the flagcarrier of Turkey, Turkish Airlines has consolidated its position on the internationalplatform by linking the Caucasian countries and the Turkish republics in CentralAsia, as well as the Middle Eastern and Asian countries, with Europe, Africa andNorth America; through the service network hub Istanbul, the cradle of ancientcivilizations and the capital of three consecutive empires. Turkish Airlines, whichhas been carrying passenger and cargo since 1933, today has a fleet of 64 aircraftand flies to a total of 103 destinations, 26 domestic and 77 international.

GeneralInformation

Arrival To The CityTurkey demands an official entry visa from citizens of several countries. Beforeyour departure to Turkey it is better to check with a Turkish consulate in yourcountry to determine if you need a visa. In some cases, you can obtain a visa uponarrival at Ataturk airport for a small fee. After passing from the passport control,it is appropriate to declare your foreign currency and your valuable objects andhave it recorded in your passport. As elsewhere too, there are limits on the amountof alcoholic drinks and cigarettes that can be brought in: two boxes of cigarettes,50 cigars, 200 grams of tobacco and 2.5 liters of alcoholic drinks are allowed.

Work Hours And HolidaysBanks are open weekdays from 8:30 AM until noon or 12:30 PM, depending onthe bank, and from 1:30 PM until 5.00 PM. However, there are some banks whichcontinue to serve during lunch breaks. Museums are generally open Tuesdaythrough Sunday from 9:30 AM until 5.00 PM or 5:30 PM and closed on Monday.Palaces are open the same hours but are closed on Thursday. For specific information

on museums, please visit our museums section. Shops and bazaars are normallyopen Monday through Saturday from 9:30 AM to 1.00 PM and from 2.00 PM to7.00 PM, and closed all day on Sunday. But most stores in shopping malls andcrowded streets are open seven days a week, including lunch breaks. You can findrestaurants or cafes open virtually at any time of the day or night.

CurrencyThe monetary unit is the New Turkish lira (YTL), which comes in bank notes of;5; 10, 20, 50 and 100. In Istanbul, traveler's checks are rarely accepted. ATMs canbe found in even the smallest Turkish towns. Most accept international credit cards or bank cards (a strip of logos is usually displayed above the ATM). Almost all ATMs have a language keyto enable you to read the instructions in English.

Credit CardsVisa and Master Card are widely accepted at hotels, stores, shops and restaurants.

Bus: HAVAS company operates regular airport to city bus transportation at halfhourly intervals from 06:00 till 24:00 hours.

Taxi: Taxis are available around the clock and operate by the meter.50% surcharge is applied between 00:01 am and 06:00 am hours.In the city:Bus: Public bus transportation has a wide web of services across the city. The fareis the equivalent of 1.- One has to pre-buy tickets to board a bus.

Tramway: Modern tramways operate in the European suburbs of Istanbul, mainlyin the old city.

Metro: An underground metro system is available between Taksim Square and4th Levent.

Travel from hotel to conference venue: Congress Center is walking distance fromTaksim Square which is full of hotels with different categories.

ClimateThe climate of Istanbul is mild.
