MINUTE FOR MISSION FOR THE YOUTH TRIENNIUM

MISSION UPDATE: JAN HUS PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Rev. Beverly Dempsey CALL TO CONFESSION

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Lord Jesus, you promised the wonderful gift of your peace. Yet so often we prefer to hold on to our insecurities and fears rather than take hold of peace. You promise us so much, yet we put our faith in what we can possess and control. When we seek our identity in anything other than you, forgive us. When our anxieties and fears are stronger than our belief in your promises, forgive us. Through the transforming power of the Holy Spirit, help us to let go of all that hinders our acceptance of your peace and your love and your very life. This we pray in your name.

PRAYERS OF SILENT AND INDIVIDUAL CONFESSION

WORDS OF ASSURANCE

Leader: Friends, believe and proclaim the Good News: in Jesus Christ, love breaks through hatred, hope breaks

through despair, life breaks through death.

People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven, loved, and set free. Thanks be to God! Amen.

* CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE Hymnal No. 579 Gloria Patri

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.

* EXCHANGE OF PEACE

Leader: Let us open our hearts to one another as Christ has opened his heart to us, and God will be glorified.

People: The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

(Exchange Signs of Reconciliation and the Peace of Christ with your neighbor - e.g., “The Peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you.”

Response - “And also with you.”)

TODAYS MUSIC

Johann Pachelbel ((1653-1706) was the last important Middle Baroque composer. His career centered around Nurnberg, and he is credited with bringing Italian influences to organ chorales and preludes. His students included J.S. Bach’s older brother. Thomas Tallis (1505-85) is considered one of England’s greatest composers. Together with fellow Roman Catholic William Byrd, he held an exclusive patent on composing church music for the reformed Anglican Church for 21 years. He composed both Latin and English works, but his setting of the English language was notable for its naturalness. Walter L. Pelz (b. 1926) was Professor of Music at Bethany College, Lindsborg, Kansas, and is a composer, choral director, organist, and educator. He composed over 200 published works, including verses and offertories, anthems, solos, cantatas, hymns, choral symphonies, and organ works—many with instruments. He is a member of the AGO and a charter member of the ALCM, where he received the "Faithful Servant" award in 2015. When J.S. Bach was preparing to apply for the position at the Church of St. Thomas, he knew that he would have to prove his ability as a teacher. He had been a very successful teacher of a number of private pupils (including his own children), and he had produced valuable teaching materials for them. There is evidence that around this time he choose to assemble some of these materials into published collections as a way of strengthening his application. Thus in 1722 he produced the Well-Tempered Clavier (which we now know as Volume I, another set came along later), and the collection of two-part Inventions and three-part Sinfonias (also referred to as “three-part inventions”). Since virtually all piano students for the next two centuries have played at least some of these works, we might assume that their principal purpose was as finger exercises—teaching young keyboardists to play two (and later three) lines with an independence and flair that would bring the music to life. However, Bach’s preface to the entire series indicates that his goal begins with performance and moves on to provide models for composition.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE READINGS

Revelation 22:1-5 (NRSV) Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2through the middle of the street of the city. On either side of the river is the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, producing its fruit each month; and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. 3Nothing accursed will be found there any more. But the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him; 4they will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. 5And there will be no more night; they need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever. Acts 16:9-15 (NRSV) During the night Paul had a vision: there stood a man of Macedonia pleading with him and saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” 10When he had seen the vision, we immediately tried to cross over to Macedonia, being convinced that God had called us to proclaim the good news to them. 11We set sail from Troas and took a straight course to Samothrace, the following day to Neapolis, 12and from there to Philippi, which is a leading city of the district of Macedonia and a Roman colony. We remained in this city for some days. 13On the sabbath day we went outside the gate by the river, where we supposed there was a place of prayer; and we sat down and spoke to the women who had gathered there. 14A certain woman named Lydia, a worshiper of God, was listening to us; she was from the city of Thyatira and a dealer in purple cloth. The Lord opened her heart to listen eagerly to what was said by Paul. 15When she and her household were baptized, she urged us, saying, “If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come and stay at my home.” And she prevailed upon us.
