Invited Faculty

Learning ObjectivesInterventional neurology is a relatively new and rap-idly evolving medical specialty. It allows minimally invasive treatment of life-threatening cerebrovas-cular diseases, which affect over 700,000 people annually and are the 3rd leading cause of death in the U.S. Following this activity, attendees should be able to:

• Understand the results of recent endovascular stroke trials and how these results impact current neuroendovascular practice

• Identify patients who may benefit from endo-vascular therapy in intracranial atherosclerosis and understand how to identify alternative endovascular techniques to intracranial stenting

• Comprehend the changes in 2013 coding as they impact interventional neurology and iden-tify the practice models as they currently exist and potential areas of growth

• Understand upcoming trials and designs in en-dovascular stroke and intracranial atherosclero-sis and understand the impact of recent clinical

trial results on procedural reimbursement

Practice Gaps• The nature of interventional neurology as a new

and rapidly evolving medical specialty has led to physicians’ need to understand the latest scientific trials and the new and changing body of evidence.

• New data coming from the SAMMPRIS trial, which has shed new light on the relative utility of medical therapy and endovascular techniques, has led to a need to better identify patients who have failed medical management and have the lowest surgical risk, and understand endo-vascular therapy and angioplasty as alternative treatment in intracranial atherosclerosis.

• As a small and rapidly evolving field, interven-tional neurology faces changes in practice models, coding and re-imbursement. Implemen-tation and awareness of changes is difficult to integrate into clinical practice and physicians’ need to understand coding changes and prac-tice models as they currently exist, and potential areas of growth.

Target Audience: The target audience for this activity includes, but is not limited to, Stroke Neurologists, Interventional Neurologists, Neurointensive Care Physicians, Neurosurgeons, Interventional Radiologists, Stroke Nurses, Neurointensive Care Nurses, Radiology Technicians and General Neurologists.
