Message from Melanie

At some point or another, everyone seems to need some help with behavioral health. But not everyone can find the words to ask for help. And not everyone who asks can find the help they need.

We want to change that. In our cover story, you read about our vision for transforming behavioral healthcarein our community. Thanks to your dedicated partnership, I am confident we can achieve our vision andchange hundreds of thousands of lives for the better. Your commitment to generously support the peoplewhom Alexian Brothers exists to serve—people whom you are likely to know and love—will continue toinspire the work of our Foundation as well as inspiring me, personally.

As we move forward in confronting this challenge, we are fortunate to have at our helm a new Foundation Board Chairman in Mike Benoit. Mike took on this role in January after having devoted the previous sixyears to serving on our Foundation’s Center for Mental Health Council and on our broader Foundation Board. Mike is Managing Director of The Wealth Office at DiMeo Schneider & Associates, an ordained Roman Catholic deacon and a father of three. He is passionate about fighting the stigma of mental health, and about increasing awareness and access to care for all members of our community.

Mike is joined by two new Foundation Board members who share his passion for mental health. Matt Walsh, a partner with Chicago-based law firm Hinshaw & Culbertson, joined the Board in April. Tor Saile is a consultant with Ironwood Family Wealth Advisors out of Barrington whopreviously served on the Board. We also are grateful to Karen Fitzgerald, who is now the Chair of our Women & Children’s Hospital Board. You can read more on page 5 about what inspires Karen and her husband Robert Fitzgerald to give so generously.

Thanks to the leadership of all of our Board members and to your generous support, the impact of your philanthropy on our community in the comingyears will be hard to measure. In the past fiscal year, your gifts have impacted the lives of thousands of community members. Thanks to yoursupport, almost $3.25 million was disbursed by the Foundation in the past year for Alexian Brothers programs and services serving people in mostneed of our help.

Henri J.M. Nouwen once wrote, “Compassion requires us to be weak with the weak, vulnerable with the vulnerable, and powerless with thepowerless. Compassion means full immersion in the condition of being human.”

Thank you for channeling your compassion through the Alexian Brothers Foundation. I am deeply grateful for your ongoing and generous support.

Sincerely,

Vice President, Advancement Alexian Brothers Foundation

Foundation Donors Make a DifferenceMary When Mary found herself sleeping in bushes in Rockford, hundreds of miles from home, she reachedout to an Alexian Brothers psychiatrist who had previously treated her for bipolar disorder. He foundher a spot in the Sy and Anne Okner Transitional Living Program. She has been in the program fortwo years, and now dreams of an apartment of her own. “I can’t tell you how much this program hashelped me,” she said. “I really want to thank Alexian Brothers for all their help.”

JosephAfter suffering a back injury, Joseph lost his job, marriage and home. Living in a neighbor’s van in thedead of Chicago winter, he finally lost hope. He said the Sy and Anne Okner Transitional LivingProgram (TLP) saved his life. “TLP gave me hope. Alexian Brothers gave me hope that I had lost,” he said. “I’d like to thank everybody who’s involved with the TLP program. It’s a blessing that it’shere. It’s done a lot of good for a lot of people.”

Over the next few years, the Alexian BrothersFoundation will seek partners to achieve thisvision. “I look forward to helping knock downthe stigma of mental illness and helping morepeople understand that every person shouldhave access to treatment at any time they need it,” Benoit said. “If we can do that andmake a stronger community, everybody benefits. That’s our hope. That’s our vision. That’s the goal we’re trying to accomplish.”

Robert and Karen Fitzgerald believe that giving back istheir obligation. Faith inspires them. So do their church

leaders, some of whom live on only half of their income anddonate the other half to charity. “We think one of our spiritualgifts is the ability to give,” said Robert Fitzgerald. “We get asmuch out of that personally as the recipients who benefit from it.”

The Fitzgeralds have chosen to honor the life of their daughter, who tragically was murdered 18 years ago, by supporting AMITAHealth Alexian Brothers Women & Children’s Hospital, HoffmanEstates. “What better way to honor her life than to support aplace that helps brings life into the world?” Karen Fitzgeraldsaid. They were instrumental in supporting the creation of thehospital and Karen now is the Chair of the hospital’s FoundationBoard. She and Robert, who live in Inverness, are the leadsponsors for the upcoming Off to the Races event.

In addition to the incredible support they have provided familiesserved by the Women & Children’s Hospital, Karen hasvolunteered and supported causes for single mothers andhomeless families. One of their most memorable gifts waswhen they purchased a well system for a village in Africathrough their church, Willow Creek Community Church. “Prior tothat, kids instead of going to school would have to walk all dayto get water and bring it back,” Karen said. “It just blew meaway that you could provide a well for a village and because ofthat all of the children would be able to go to school.”

Philanthropic dollars will still be directed toward the Alexian Brothersministries for which donors intend them. Foundation operating expenseswill continue to be underwritten, so 100 percent of every donated dollarwill continue to benefit the vulnerable men, women and children whoreceive Alexian Brothers services that would not exist without philanthropy.

“The Foundation still exists to support the people served by AlexianBrothers facilities in Elk Grove Village, Hoffman Estates and ArlingtonHeights as well as those who receive supportive housing services inChicago and Waukegan,” said Foundation Board Member John Sullivan,DO, Medical Director of Emergency and Trauma Services at AMITA Health St. Alexius Medical Center, Hoffman Estates. “Our Foundationremains integrated with the new system and we continue to play anintegral role in advancing its faith-based mission.”

The Alexian Brothers Foundation launched a Facebookpage in May. This foray into social media is a new way to

engage in a conversation about what Foundation Boardmembers and donors care most about: inspired giving, gratitude and the immeasurable impact generosity can have.

Donors who “like” and follow Foundation posts will findinspiring stories of recovery, both from within the AlexianBrothers ranks and from other organizations with similarmissions. They will find information about upcoming eventsand photos from past events. They will see the joy and wonderchild life services can bring to hospitalized children, such asin a recent post thanking donors for helping make possible aprogram at AMITA Health Alexian Brothers Women &Children’s Hospital, Hoffman Estates, that delivers magic to the bedside of hospitalized children. And donors will findmuch more to view and share.

Join the conversation by visiting and liking the Foundation’spage at www.facebook.com/alexianbrothersfoundation.

Thanks to dedicated partners like the Rev. Terry Keehan, Sean Keehan, Bill Keehan “Chief” AwardRecipient Kathy Kirk, and Bill Keehan Jr., the Alexian Brothers Foundation mission of serving the poor and vulnerable in the community remains strong.

AMITA Health encompasses nine hospitals. Its physician provider network has morethan 3,000 physicians. The integrated healthsystem serves communities in western andnorthwest suburban Chicago, and iscommitted to delivering the most efficient, highest quality, faith-based care. In additionto focusing on spiritual, clinically integratedcare, AMITA Health “is also about makingsure that all those who need our care haveaccess to services and can get that care,”Frey said. “We want to make sure we areliving and breathing the mission each day bykeeping these doors open for everyone.”

The philanthropic partners of the AlexianBrothers Foundation are more critical thanever to support that mission and ensure thatthe most vulnerable people in thecommunities served by the Alexian Brothersministries of AMITA Health continue toreceive the compassionate, high-quality care they need.

A patient smiles ear to ear during a bedside visit from Open Heart Magicmagicians. Foundation donors helped get this program off the ground.
