A taste of high school life as Year 6s come for a visit

Congratulations to our fabulous Year 12 cohort of 2018. They have been an amazing group of students who, with the foundation they have built at Broome Senior High School, will go on to achieve incredible success in their lives.

A big thank you to all who were involved in the organisation of the graduation ceremonies, they were all wonderful events, and of course a very special thanks to all the staff who have steered these young people through their schooling.

My first cohort of Year 12s have been an outstanding group of students who have represented the school and their preceding Cluster primary schools with pride and distinction. Congratulations to all the graduates.

With the graduation over for another year, Ms Wearing travelled with five students to Japan to represent our school and Australia proudly at a High School Student Summit on World Tsunami awareness. The summit was called with the aim of deepening International understanding and raising awareness of the threat of tsunami and precautionary measures against it. 300 students from all over the world participated in workshops, study tours, evacuation drills, sightseeing and a presentation during the summit.

Meanwhile in Broome, it was exciting to meet a fabulous cohort of year 6 Cluster Primary school students who recently came to our school for their Orientation Day. We hope they enjoyed a taste of high school and we look forward to their formal arrival in 2019.

I would l also like to thank our wonderful community who continue to support public education here in Broome. Broome Senior High School continues to be a very high-performing school, and this is reflected in our NAPLAN and Year 12 results for 2018. Together with our cluster primary schools we continue to offer quality public education for children in Broome.

PRINCIPAL’S SAY The 2018 Year 6 Orientation Day saw over 200 students from the Broome Cluster Primary Schools attend Broome Senior High School recently. For a full day students participated in a variety of orientation activities designed to give next year’s cohort of Year 7 students a taste of what high school life will be like.

Students assembled in the gymnasium before being separated into mixed school groups and assigned a current Broome Senior High School student mentor. They then moved around the school to various subject areas where they enjoyed activities in Technologies, Health and Phys. Ed, The Arts, English, Science and a treasure hunt designed to help them find their way around the school grounds run by the HaSS and Maths departments.

Not only did the students get a glimpse of how high school works during the orientation, they also had the chance to meet and talk to Broome Senior High School staff as well as getting to know students from other schools.

It was great to see so much energy and enthusiasm from the Year 6 students. They certainly seemed very excited to start high school next year and we can’t wait to welcome them.

Showcasing the incredible diversity of talent that our region is renowned for, the show featured a stunning collection of wearable art-works created by local Kimberley designers and award winning entrants from Perth and overseas.

Produced by Theatre Kimberley this latest original extravaganza of multicultural costumes, drama, dance, music and circus featured students from across Broome Senior High School in character

roles, dance and circus performances as well as modelling. Fashion and Beauty students worked in class to create a Worn Art costume while students from the Broome Girls Academy appeared in a group performance as part of the show.

Five senior school students with their teacher, Ms Wearing, travelled to Japan recently to participate in the High School Students Summit on ‘World Tsunami Awareness Day’ 2018 in Wakayama.

Our school is the first school in Australia to be invited to attend the Summit which was funded by the Japanese Government. The invitation was extended to all Year 10, 11 and 12 students who, in order to be chosen for the trip, were required to submit an application reviewed by Principal Mr Burt and Ms Wearing. The chosen students, Cohan McArdle, Teagan Gale, Kaelyn Pethick, Hannah Lewis and Freya Warman were selected from 28 submissions.

The itinerary was jam packed with sightseeing before the Summit got under way. The students represented our school and country proudly taking up their positions in the front row at the initial meeting and again during the orientation for the Fire Festival. They were among 1000 people to carry lit torches along a 2km route.

They then travelled to Yuasa Cho and visited Taikyu Senbio High School where the students were shown around historic sites including the Tsunami Centre before making the journey to Kushimoto for a study tour of the railway disaster program which involved participation in evacuation drills. Students had to jump off the train in the middle of nowhere and run up a steep hill.

From there it was on to the Nachisan Seiganto-Ji Temple high in the mountains where they listened to a talk about Typhoon ‘Talas’ and the destruction it caused in 2011.

Freya participated in a commemorative tree planting ceremony which was attended by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and attracted

a lot of media attention before all of the students presented to the Summit as representatives for Australia. Their presentation was a six minute review that the students put together after researching Broome’s ability to cope with a natural disaster. Each of the 48 countries also presented before a declaration was written to improve the rate of survival from disasters.

The Summit came to a close with a reception that included student performances and a very moving lantern ceremony.

Our students have had an incredible trip, learned so much and met some fabulous people along the way. We are sure this experience will stay with them forever as well as inform and enhance their future education and career choices.
