Adaptive Intelligent Recovery™Breakthrough Technology SensesTemperature More Like You Do

M6397

Your Perfect Climate Comfort Center™ Control System is sosmart, it’s almost human.• Your body perceives temperature from a variety of

sources, not only from the air in the room, but also fromyour surroundings—walls, windows and furnishings.

• Humans feel differences in temperature as slight astwo degrees Fahrenheit.

• Common household thermometers and standard thermo-stats sense only air temperature, which may or may notreflect how hot or cold the room actually feels to humans.

• Your new Perfect Climate Comfort Center™ ControlSystem reads both the temperature of the wall and theair—and responds to temperature changes as little as onedegree Fahrenheit—so room temperature is more likely tofeel right to you and your family.

The Perfect Climate Comfort Center™ Control System isactually a small but powerful computer. When calculating thetime to turn on your heating or cooling system, it considers(1) air temperature, (2) wall temperature, and (3) the time youwant the room to be comfortable.• During the Adaptive Intelligent Recovery™ time, the

Perfect Climate Comfort Center™ Control System immedi-ately increases the temperature setpoint from the energysavings to the comfort temperature, and leaves theequipment running continuously. This saves energy byavoiding cycling the equipment and overshooting thecomfort temperature. You can see the current controltemperature anytime during recovery by pressingHEAT/COOL SETPOINTS.

• This Perfect Climate Comfort Center™ Control Systemlearns from experience. Each day it checks how closely ithit the recovery target and adjusts the next day recoverystart time accordingly.

• It typically takes four to eight days after installation for thePerfect Climate Comfort Center™ Control System to adjustto the local weather, your lifestyle, the construction of yourhome and your heating/cooling system. The PerfectClimate Comfort Center™ Control System calculates theLEAVE/RETURN recovery separately from theSLEEP/WAKE recovery.

Page 27: 69-0891 - PC8900 Perfect Climate Comfort Center · 69-0891—2 2 Congratulations! You made a smart choice when you pur-chased your Perfect Climate Comfort Center™ Control System!

27 69-0891—2

• With the PC8900, you can choose whether you want touse the Adaptive Intelligent Recovery™ setting or theconventional recovery. The PC8900 comes preset to theAdaptive Intelligent Recovery™ setting. When conven-tional recovery is desired, call your service technician forassistance. Use the Adaptive Intelligent Recovery™ settingwhen you want to choose the exact time that the roomreaches your comfort temperature. Use conventionalrecovery when you prefer to choose the exact time yourheating or cooling system comes on to start recovery.

Control Options

Frost ControlIf your Perfect Climate Comfort Center™ Control System isequipped with an outdoor temperature sensor and a humidifier, you can use the frost control feature to control window conden-sation during the heating season. Frost control works byreducing humidification when conditions indicate that conden-sation or frost can occur.

The degree of frost control is determined by the setting youchoose between 0 and 10. Press HUMIDITY twice. The displayshows FROST and a number from 0 to 10. When the factorysetting (5) results in too much condensation or frost on thewindows, lower the setting. When the air seems too dry, raisethe setting.

Ventilation ControlWhen the system is equipped with a self-powered ventilationsystem or a damper and the PC8900 is set up by the installerfor ventilation or damper control, the ventilation is energized inresponse to any one of the following conditions:

• If you request ventilation from the Perfect ClimateComfort Center™ Control System.

• If a high carbon dioxide condition is present and a CO2monitor is installed.

• If a high humidity condition is present while in heatingmode.

After a change in ventilation is requested, it can take up to20 seconds for the requested change to begin or end.

Page 28: 69-0891 - PC8900 Perfect Climate Comfort Center · 69-0891—2 2 Congratulations! You made a smart choice when you pur-chased your Perfect Climate Comfort Center™ Control System!

69-0891—2 28

Fan ControlYour fan will be on when any of these conditions are present (itcan take up to 20 seconds for the fan to turn on).FAN ON: This setting means that your fan runs 100 percent

of the time during this period.FAN AUTO: The AUTO setting means the fan runs only with

your heating or cooling system.FAN CIRC: In this setting, the fan runs at least 30 percent of

the time, including the time the fan is on while theheating or cooling system is running. When theheating or cooling system is not running at all, thefan runs for ten minutes on and 20 minutes off.Protection against fan short cycling is built intothe device.

The installer setup has the ability to extend fan operationfollowing a cooling cycle. When selected, the fan run time at theend of a cooling cycle is extended 80 seconds.

Humidity Control with FanSelect models of the W8900 can be configured to controlhumidity levels while the fan is energized. This type of humiditycontrol does not require the heat ouput to be energized. For thehumidity terminals (HUM) to energize, the following conditionsmust be met:

1. System must be in the heat mode.2. The call for humidity (Sensed relative humidity, RH, is

below RH setpoint).3. Fan terminal (G) must be energized through program-

ming or by pressing the fan button on the PC8900.

Cool Mode Humidity Control(Select Models Only)Cool dehumidification is activated when there is a call forcooling or the sensed RH is above the setpoint. This can causeovercooling; see Cool Mode with Reheat Feature.

Page 29: 69-0891 - PC8900 Perfect Climate Comfort Center · 69-0891—2 2 Congratulations! You made a smart choice when you pur-chased your Perfect Climate Comfort Center™ Control System!

29 69-0891—2

Cool Mode with Reheat Feature(Select Models Only)The reheat feature is designed to keep you comfortable. Whenthe cooling setpoint is reached, but the dehumidificationsetpoint is not satisfied, the control turns on the heat. If theheat raises the temperature so there is a call for cooling andthe dehumidification requirement is still not met, the coolingstarts. This switching continues until the dehumidification andcooling setpoints are met. This feature assures that you will notexperience excessive temperature drop due to the need fordehumidification.

Answers to Common QuestionsAbout the PC8900

Q. The temperature displayed on the PC8900 doesn’talways match the room temperature on a thermometerlocated right next to it. Why?

A. The PC8900 is a very accurate instrument designed tosense both air temperature and wall temperature likeyour body does, and give an average reading. Thermom-eters measure only the room temperature, and don’tcompensate for the wall temperature.

Q. How many hours in advance of my WAKE time shouldthe furnace come on?

A. The time varies, up to 24 minutes per degree Fahrenheitdifference between the energy saving and comforttemperatures, depending on outside temperature andperformance during the past 24 hours. A microcomputerwith the Adaptive Intelligent Recovery™ algorithm allowsthe Perfect Climate Comfort Center™ Control System tothink for itself and adjust the heating or cooling recoverytime to reach your desired comfort temperature at theprogrammed time. Whenever the temperature is morethan one degree hotter or colder than the comforttemperature at the programmed time, recovery beginsearlier the next day. This approach assures the tempera-ture won’t over- or under-shoot the setpoint and allowsthe proper amount of time for recovery. Another factorthat varies the time is the change of seasons. The PerfectClimate Comfort Center™ Control System accommo-dates the change in seasons by requiring more or lessrecovery time, as necessary.

69-0891—2 30

Q. What does the HOLD key do?A. It bypasses the program settings and holds the tempera-

ture, fan and ventilation to whatever is set. To change thesettings, press the appropriate keys. Pressing theCANCEL key on the PC8900 returns the device to theprogrammed operations.

Q. How long does the HOLD mode hold?A. You can choose to have HOLD in effect as long as you

want, until you cancel it by pressing the CANCEL key. Oryou can set it for any amount of time less than one week.See the two Changing Settings sections for details.

Q. How can the Perfect Climate Comfort Center™ ControlSystem save energy when it comes on so early in themorning?

A. It saves energy (and money) by setting back the tem-perature for optimum blocks of time during the day ornight. Honeywell experts have invested years of engi-neering and in-home testing to assure that this is themost effective way to set back and save energy whilemaximizing your comfort.

Q. Sometimes my Perfect Climate Comfort Center ControlSystem doesn’t allow the house temperature to drop tomy SLEEP setting before it starts bringing the heat on.Why?

A. Many factors affect your comfort and energy savings. Ifthose factors, such as weather and humidity, werealways consistent, an unchanging program would alwayswork. But factors change. The whole idea of the AdaptiveIntelligent Recovery™ setting is to save energy withoutsacrificing comfort. When necessary, the AdaptiveIntelligent Recovery setting overrides your temperaturesettings to assure accurate temperature recovery withmaximum comfort and energy savings for the currentconditions.

Q. What is the function of the CHECK key and light?A. The CHECK key can be used to review the outdoor

temperature, humidity setpoint and fan and ventilationsettings. However, if the CHECK LED is lit, pressing theCHECK key displays the messages in the CHECK LISTsection. The messages appear in the order shown in thelist, if they apply to your model.
