Play-by-e-mail tournaments are the answer to many players’ most common com-plaints—lack of time and inability to find skilled opposition. BPA does not run
PBeM tournaments; rather, we provide support for hobbyists willing to host events. E-mail tournaments are counted the same as face-to-face action in BPA’s prestigious Caesar com-petition, with Laurels based solely on size of the field and the average face-to-face playing time.
Entry in these tournaments is free to current BPA members. For anyone who is not already a member, an Associate membership costs only $10 to cover the costs of this program. (Players have no obligation to keep their memberships current once the tournament begins.) For informa-tion about running a PBeM tournament, contact the BPA PBeM coordinator Hank Burkhalter at [email protected] or check out his webpage at www.abovethefields.com/top_pbem.

There was a major winter storm the night before WAM IX was set to begin in Timo-
nium, Maryland, but the “Card Sharks” dug themselves out and showed up anyway! 38 CDG players made the trek, compared to 37 in 2010 and 40 in 2009.
This year’s four tournaments with sched-uled rounds were: Hannibal: Rome vs. Carthage (HRC), Twilight Struggle (TWS), Combat Com-mander (CBC) and the new kid on the block, Washington’s War (WWR) as WAM took on a
more structured approach than in years past. After Action Reports of each of these tourna-ments are posted on the BPA website in the WAM archives. Players were asked to enter each tournament just prior to the start of Round 1 and at the start of each successive round at-tendance was called from that list. Each eve-ning, I displayed a detailed schedule of the next day’s events. We continued the concept of Open First Rounds on Thursday (because it is a travel day). Fifth rounds were scheduled on
Sunday morning only when required. Only TWS re-quired a Round 5 this year.
Between tournament games there was much open gaming. Games ran pretty much non stop from 0900 in the morning to as late as 0200 at night. Game designer Volko Ruhnke was also on hand to run an informal introductory event for his newly pub-lished CDG, Labyrinth, on Saturday. Volko also dem-onstrated his new game under development, An-dean Abyss.
Above and beyond the playing of games, I can’t really adequately describe the social aspect of WAM. We have been doing this for nine years now, and the core of participants has pretty much stayed intact. Many of us have become very good friends, but we also welcome and encour-age new people to attend. I can’t speak for anybody else, but it is easily my fa-vorite weekend of the year. It was not surprising then that an offer to merge with the larger EuroQuest con-ference at a bigger site was discussed and declined in favor of preserving the sta-tus quo.

WAM IX 69
Stefan Mecay became the first BPA Caesar to extend his reign by repeating as BPA’s top
competitor in 2010. His strategy again revolved around running up a big lead before WBC by winning or placing in three email tournaments (1960, Manifest Destiny and Stone Age) and pad-ded that further with a second at WAM (Twilight Struggle). He cemented his title defense with three WBC titles in his Card Driven specialties (Paths of Glo-ry, 1960 and Twilight Struggle). It was a far cry from his record setting pace of 295 laurels in 2009, but his total of 182 laurels still ranked as the 4th highest an-nual total earned to date. Even so, it proved necessary to outdistance a record setting Consul performance by the plaque king, Bruce Reiff, who finished just 19 laurels behind despite limited email and no mini-con participation. Stefan’s back-to-back titles will save him a return trip to the toga em-porium when he once again model’s the latest fashions for a reigning Caesar when accepting his top gamer award this summer.
Stefan’s rise in the BPA lists has been ac-complished in record time. He now ranks 7th
in tournament wins (18), 5th in oppo-nents defeated (847), and 4th in total lau-rels (1026) in only five years of compe-tition—surpassing many with a seven-year head start in the BPA laurels race.
Bert Schoose finished third in the scor-ing by double dipping in two events with 54 laurels in the email wars (1st in Afrika Korps
and 2nd in Russian Campaign) while winning or placing in four WBC
events for 104 more (Afrika Korps 1st again, Football Strategy 3rd,
Panzerblitz 3rd, and Russian Campaign 1st).
Rounding out the top six BPA competitors for 2010 were Terry Coleman, Richard Beyma and Robert Kircher in that order. Only eight of last
year’s Top 25 players managed to retain that high ranking (up
from seven in 2009) led by Me-cay who remained atop the heap.
The other top scorers to retain their high standing were Richard Beyma, Keith
Wixson, Alex Bove, Arthur Field, Tom De-Marco, James Pei and Chris Byrd. Bove and Byrd were the only ones to retain their Top 25 status for the third straight year while 17 new names graced the leader board.
