Birthdays Greensox win 9th title

N one of the clos-est title races for a while, unusually involving three

rather than just two teams, the Greensox won their 9th title, and their first since 2015, after tying the potential decider with the Lions in the penultimate game. The season be-gan with last year’s champion Lions losing their first two games, while the runner-up Mavericks lost their first three, unprecedented in the history of MSL.

Bases Loaded pointed out that no team had won the title after los-ing their first two games, and so it proved. Sox were actu-ally top of the standings for all but weeks 3 and 4 (and then only behind

Thunder on runs con-ceded) and were un-beaten for the first seven games. Lions and Mavs recovered to make a fight of it, but were always chasing the eventual champi-ons.

“You’ll never win anything with kids”. Can't quite place it, but that quote has been heard in Manches-ter before. With a number of the team members’ birth years starting with a 2 or ending with a 999, it has been a period of change for one of the oldest teams, in both average age and history, in MSL, over the last two years. This year saw the Sox reclaim the MSL title after one of the closest title races in recent times.

An awesome start to the season saw the Sox step out to a modest lead, then the title contenders all took games from each other and it bunched up as we went in to the later stages. With all of the games played in great spirits and fair play, some close games emerged especially some with both teams not enjoying the decisions behind the plate. The fi-nal round-robin proved decisive in settling the sea-son. The clutch game came against the two teams who have won most of the titles in recent history. Lions v Greensox. It's one of the highlights of the year with the three games we play against each other. We both want to win, we both play hard, and this year in the deciding game after a win each, it would ef-fectively decide the season. The game started well for Sox, but Lions responded

son with a very stressful situation when the week before out major summer tournament, Parrs Wood was fully waterlogged. However thanks to the concerted efforts of myself, Matt Fair-weather, Dave Wareham and in particular Mike Goff we managed to move the whole thing to USG despite those fields calling games off the Wednesday beforehand.

It is also always a constant pleasure to see how we, as Manchester teams and players, are so well represented at all the major tourna-ments. A couple of personal highlights of mine were seeing the introduction of the Tempest with Mark Griffin heading it up and a heavily Manchester-based squad in their two new teams. Also the Camels not only qualifying for NSL2 but dominating the NSL3 nationals held in Manchester with an undefeated performance throughout the weekend.

We recently had the League’s AGM where we saw some changes to the Exec. I would like to thank Dave Wareham, Al Bruce and Matt Fair-weather for their service to the league while also welcoming Aimee Dyble and Paul Fagan to the new Exec. As you may notice that is a net loss so we do need more people. YOUR LEAGUE NEEDS YOU!!!

Have a great night one and all. Dave Dean

and grew a strong lead going into the later innings as the light started to fade. In an epic 7th inning the Sox put up enough to tie the game and shut the home team Lions out. As the sun went lower the Sox bats were on fire scoring five runs and with just one out and two base runners, the game was called for the bad light, and the tie was the right result as there was nothing to split the teams this year. I could write more mentions for the team members this year, and hope many win MSL awards tonight, but we will be celebrating them on the head table tonight at the end-of-season party, so I don't want to spoil the outcomes. Special mentions to those who stepped in as guests to cover and some amaz-ing individual plays and performances over the sea-son. Our more senior players carried on their amazing performances, and as for the next generation, then I'm massively proud as a captain in how they all stepped up and delivered. Danny Gunn

Tigers Club Pre-season

The Tigers won the Division 3 title in 2018 but retirements and other departures meant that we were always going to have a significantly different team in 2019. We also decided to set up a second team to cater for those who either couldn’t play on Wednesdays or had doubts about playing in Division 2. Dan Downes had already committed to returning to the team before the end of the 2018 season and his arrival encouraged a number of other guys to sign up for the Division 2 campaign. We introduced most of the new players during our winter indoor campaign and initial signs were promising. Recruitment for the second team also went well and the temporary return of Ed Coving-ton gave us a useful veteran presence for the first few games. Still we had two untried squads at the start of the year so it was hard to predict how ei-ther team would travel over the year.

Pre-season Tournaments

Both teams had a bright start to the year. We blooded several new players in the rec part of the NW1 tournament and did well on the pitch finish-ing as runners up. The comp half of the tournament was tougher but gave us valuable experience of playing at a higher level, which we put to good use at Firstball where we played really well all weekend and walked away unbeaten and with the Silver tro-phy (pictured)

After an opening-day loss we went on a tear, win-ning ten of our next 11 games, a run good enough to claim both promotion and (as it proved) the Divi-sion 2 crown. The last three weeks of the season proved tougher, we ran out of steam, losing all three games, but we had just done enough to claim the championship by virtue of our 2:1 head-to-head against the Meerkats. Overall a very successful sea-

can look forward to 2020 with confidence.

James Wright was our best player, hitting for both average and power. Dave Wareham was the pitching mainstay. Harry Schulte got better and better as the season went on. Aiden Peakman showed real deter-mination and enthusiasm and also improved as the year went on. Sandra Zlatinská was our best and most experienced female player. Mikala Martin gave us some batting power and was solid in the field, returning to softball after a gap of several years. Steve Girling provided the team with some welcome experience on his return from a year out and was reliable with both bat and glove. Oli Sharpe was an-other good all round player with some experience (even if that was c.10 years ago!). Rachael Andrews and Lynsey Taylor were both fantastic, getting better and better as the season went on with Lynsey’s hit-ting a particular highlight. Becky Crawford made Dave realise he could never hope to be the grumpi-est player on the team whilst also having all the at-tributes to become a really good softballer. Evie Sanders also showed lots of promise with a reliable glove, a good arm and potential at the plate. All in all we looked really promising and should kick on again in 2020.

Dan Downes was the main man at the plate and in the field. Alyssa Jones was one of the best out-fielders in the league. Brad Hadwin was impressive in the field and his batting got better and better as the season went on. Caroline Drake hit well and looked good at catcher. Craig Brooks was good with the bat and in the field. Emma Pritchard and Jackie Ervin both hit really well in the second half of the season. Matty Bell and Steve Beddows gave us a fine pitching duo. Tereza Kokocińska and Jackie were both good on 1st. Jonny Huck gave us a valuable veteran presence and made us better in the outfield in every game he played. Holly Smith started the season hitting really well and was good all season long. In the field she was good at catcher and also put in some fine performances at 2nd base and in the outfield.

We started the season in great style but then found life harder in the second half of the season when we played against tougher opposition. We still did enough to win promotion however and will be plying our trade in Division 3 next year. Just as important, if not more so though, was the way that several of the new players blossomed as the season went on. With a winter of indoor ahead we

and III in the third tier. Adding five experienced ex

Review of the year (Continued from page 5) -Lightning players to five former Drizzlers and sev-eral new recruits made a strong if unfamiliar line-up, which gelled quickly with a positive attitude to building a new team. Almost every player was able to play more than one position without compromis-ing defensive reliability, and we have three strong pitching options, making us very difficult to score heavily against.

The Division 3 ‘Invincibles’ did on occasion look, er, vincible, with close games settled in the latter in-nings against Hackers, Barflies, and Thunder III, and a memorable final game against a full-strength Ti-tans team that stayed in the balance to the end.

The batting stats show how T2 were able to put to-gether such a consistent season, with all 14 regular players recording an OBP above .500. Annie Downes was the most decorated in terms of MVP nomina-tions, recognising her all-round strength as a pitch-ing or infield option, while Tilly Godson was very much an unsung heroine, combining superb reliabil-ity in the batters’ box with never missing a ball on 1st base, even contending with some very average throws from her infield.

While we will inevitably have to bring in some new faces for our next season, we are looking forward to another fun season stepping up to Division 2 next summer. Andrew Bogie

like being split up by Club Thunder, so the core of the team – friends and work-mates at Priestnall School – preferring to stick together, decided to go it alone. Unable to play on a Thursday, the offer of a place in Div 3 had to be turned down, and so it was that Los Bandidos set about recapturing the title that half of them had won the previous year!

That core of friends wanting to stick together in-cluded a couple of players with Div 1 experience, and it is true that Ross Birch and Chloe Llewellyn contributed to a solid infield, but aided and abetted by players with mostly just a few years’ experience like Lisa Hine catching, Janine Hickie nailing the 1B slot, with Jonny Preston at 2nd or 3rd, his spot after he went off to coach Rochdale FC variously filled by skipper Adam Morrison or veteran Harry Somers, and Loz Birch stepped in a handful of times but was by no means a regular “ringer”. After a nervous few games on the mound, Adam gave way to the reli-able Irish almost veteran Pete O’Hare who proved solid as a rock, and even had a first-ever game as catcher when holiday absences forced a reshuffle and a guest appearance by Annie Downes.

If opposition batters got it past that infield ring, they still had to beat a formidable outfield with Liam Morrison and Jason Kneenmopping up almost everything, ably helped by two of Maisie Emmer-son, Bev Bradbury and Kate Davidson in the cor-

ners. That’s an outfield made up of players with between one and three years’ experience each.

Big D was awesome, with on average less than two runs conceded per inning over the whole season, but it was with the bats that Bandidos really showed their strength, and it was a player with no Div-1 or NSL experience who smashed it around the park, Liam hitting 25 home runs in 63 plate appear-ances – that’s two homers in every five at bats. Ross got 15 homers (that’s one in every three PAs) and plenty of others chipped in, with Chloe winning the female HR trophy, and Maisie getting her first ever four-baser. Pete’s five homers included two grand slams and while Liam (69) and Ross (54) pre-dictably racked up the RBIs, Pete was not far be-hind with 41.

Bandidos had a great season, playing together like a bunch of friends and having a good laugh, often at each other’s expense. And even if we blew away some of our opponents, others gave us some really close hard-fought games (including Tiggers, the only team to beat us), and we never (we hope) dis-respected anyone. Quirkily, next year’s Div 3 will be made up of pretty much the same teams, all of whom, we know, will be itching for revenge. Bring it on! El Niño

The Titans’ season ends with us taking back-to-back promotion and now looking forward to Divi-sion 2! It has been a different season for the Ti-tans, losing players along the way, which meant we lacked consistency at times. But never did I doubt our ability and I am confident we will go into Div 2 as a solid team and a team that will not easily be beaten! Each player has grown in their ability, stronger batting and fielding; however, listening to base coaches needs a little work ;) At the start of the season we welcomed Robbie Cowbury and Daisy Goodenough to the team and although we lost one Flanagan (boo), we gained another with Bradley Flanagan. His previous softball experience has been invaluable to the Titans! We also end the season a full team with experienced players joining the Titans fold ready for next year!

The female Titans especially had a great season, a shout out to Karyn Cooper who stepped up to be-

At full strength, the Enforcers were a match for almost anyone in Division 4. The season started with a resounding 28-12 win against the eventual runners up Base Invaders who gained revenge later in the season with a 35-7 reciprocal thumping. En-forcers were mercied on two other occasions dur-ing the season but only by the eventual champions Bandidos who mercied most of their opponents on their way to the title. Last year's rookies became very useful sophomores. Amongst these were Hayley Gradwell, Frankie Hurley-Peet and two GB U18 rookies Bryn Davies and Sam Whatmore. Sam gained the accolade of being only the second ever player to score two grand slams in the same inning doing so on 28th May against the Colt 45s. He also hit for the cycle in that game. We lost two games by just one run in the first rota-tion, against the Tiggers and Freeze, but inflicted retribution in the second rotation, 21-14 against Freeze and a very good performance last game of the season to beat the early pace setting Tiggers 23-2. This success was down to the development of last year's rookies. Hopefully the Enforcers can build on this yet again for next season! Mike Davies

come our first female pitcher: with little experience Karyn who is made of steel stepped up to the plate!

Aimee Dyble and Karyn end their season joint at the top of the home run leader board for Div 3 and finally, Rachael Willder became our first Titan to go off and have a baby welcome to the world John “Titan” Willder!

The Titans wanted to do more tournaments this season, but to do this we needed more players! So

with the Titans making the first move, the Rene-gade baby was born! Joining forces with the Base Invaders and Meteors, it was a pleasure to co-captain this team alongside Chris Norton and Bry-ony James. We visited Leeds and Bristol along with home tournies Firstball and Manc Main., experienc-ing new teams and leaving our mark!

Special shout out to the Base Invaders for their pro-motion to Div 3! A great team and thank you for training with the Titans and welcoming us into the fold, lots of new friendships have been made!

As captain of the Titans I love you all, you all con-tinue to improve, show up and have a laugh and that is what matters most! We look forward to con-tinuing our indoor season and growing in our ex-perience and ability ready for the outdoor season and Div 2! A new look Titans is on the way!!

Blue Jays are beautiful but highly aggressive birds, known for their intelligence and tight family bonds. This tight family bond was in evidence from the start of the 2019 season as the squad consisted en-tirely of Jays returning to the nest.

We won a few, lost a few and chucked one away (sorry Thunder). The Blue Jays’ beauty shone throughout, despite bruised ankles, a broken finger (in the only pre-game practice we ever had—not doing that again) and one headed ball in their ag-gressive pursuit of victory. We lost Lisa and

Tom, Alex got lost, Maggie was sometimes on time, we found Lisa and Tom and found a stellar pitcher in the shape of Arthur who got MVP for the Jays virtually every week he played!

What has 2020 got in store? Ronky and Jen return for a full season, Fliss says she won’t return unless she’s back to her favourite spot in the order and Josh returns after spring training in his under-ground batting cage — be warned! Jono Wrigley

Colt 45s have had a great season. We recruited a few new fantastic players who were a real asset to the team. It is the first season we have remained in Division 4 and we benefitted from playing against some excellent teams.

Spittin’ Camels win NSL3 Nearing the end of another productive season the Camels’ season reached its pinnacle at the NSL3

championships held on our doorstep at Parrs Wood on the 31st August and 1 t September. Having warmed the squad up through the season winning B Grade at Diamond 1 and some strong

performances at BSUK’s North West Series we were confident of competing with a strong field of teams with a mix of locals (Meerkats, Sharks, Mavs II) and distant southerners (London Raiders, Fuzzy Ducks, Bracknell Scorchers, Blitz Havoc).

After 2018’s beautiful weather, this tournament was played in the theme of 2019 tournaments, driving rain. Camels began with a confident 14-3 win against Sharks before edging past Meerkats in a tight 8-6 con-

Review of the year (Continued from page 9) test played in the worst conditions of the weekend. These wins gave us some confidence going into a tight game with Fuzzy Ducks, some uncharacteristic fielding errors left our bats needing to dig us out of a hole and we left with a frustrating 10-10 tie. Those errors gave us the kick we needed and we turned in a brilliant performance against Blitz Havoc, fresh from NSL 2, winning 14-5 and ending the day with three wins and a tie. We found the nearest watering hole (we are Camels after all) knowing a strong second day would give us the qualification we were after.

Camels headed into the Sunday in confident mood. After the team had used a pharmacy’s worth of ibu-profen and physio tape, we got going against Brack-nell Scorchers picking up where we left off the previ-ous evening with great performances all over the field easing us to a 14-1 win. A two-hour break then al-lowed us to return to the watering hole for a team breakfast before beating Raiders 10-4 and Mavs II 11-7 to secure qualification with efficient performances.

This continued against Blitz Havoc in the semi-final with probably our best performance of the tourna-ment with a 17-1 thumping stringing our base hits together and a brutal defensive display.

The other finalist was a Sharks team that were unlucky not to qualify above Fuzzy Ducks and subse-quently thumped them in their semi. A good spirited final, cut short by another bout of driving rain, ended up 10-6 to Camels finishing the competition un-beaten, a well-deserved reward for the level of soft-ball maintained over the weekend.

NSL2 now beckons for Camels and we look forward to seeing more and more North West teams repre-sented in the national structure. Adam Hugill

Outstanding achievement award—Jeremy Fothergill EREMY Fothergill joined the league at the same time as I did in the newly formed Cen-turions. To the best of my knowledge we are the last two surviving members still playing

in the league. During those early years Jeremy proved to be an invaluable teammate who eventu-ally settled in to being our pitcher.

After leaving the team, by then re-named Clangers, Jeremy went on to join the Lions club, playing for the More Lions, and the C Lions, who, on separat-ing from the Lions family, became the Bullfrogs, whom he captained. When Bullfrogs folded he moved on to his current team, the Speeders.

However it has been part of the Executive that Jer-emy has proved to be most valuable. Firstly he served as secretary under last year’s recipient Tony La Fave before moving on to his real home of Um-

pire in chief. Jeremy has been a long-term umpire in this league and spent many years as Umpire in chief. During that time he was able to increase the number of umpires we have in the league as well as improving the overall quality. He has proved a source of wisdom on the umpiring forums with his knowledge and interpretation of the laws, and an-swers to tricky “Ask the umpire” questions. He has frequently been seen umpiring at tournaments around the country. On behalf of the League I con-gratulate Jeremy on this award.

539 people played softball in MSL this year, 39 fewer than last year. There

were 403 players rostered pre-season (63 less than last year), of whom 65 didn’t play at all (three more than last year). 101 joined the league during the season (15 down on last year). These stats sug-gest we are shrinking, but only minimally. Swing-ers had the most rostered players (32) of whom 5 never played, and 19 played less than four times. Camels had the smallest roster (14).

248 games were played, four less than last year, though four games were

lost through the Vipers folding. Division 1 teams got 17 games. Elsewhere, teams got 14 or 15 games, though Division 3 teams lost games against the Vipers, with two teams getting as few as 12 games. On top of the four Vipers forfeits, there were four more forfeits in total and one incom-plete games.

6,644 runs were scored in total, 850 fewer than last year, in roughly

the same number of games, a decrease of 11%. The average runs per game in each division ranges isa round 25 in Divisions 1, 2 and 4, 30 in Division 4 and 34 in Division 3 where Thunder II dominated every game. The weekly average was consistently around 30 runs per game when there was a full programme. There were two shutouts, one less than last year.

764 home runs were scored, 26% down on last year. Of those, 38 were grand

slams (5 less than last year). Homers hit by women account for 10.3% of the total (a decrease). Guests scored 32 home runs (about half last year’s total). 18 were by guests playing “down” including all five

Statto’s corner guest grand slams.

Thunder II were the league’s top scorers with 352 runs (23.5 per game) just ahead of Los Bandidos (350 at 23.3), and not surprisingly also had the meanest defence (103 at 7.2 per game). Swingers unsurprisingly scored the fewest runs at 6.8 per game, and conceded the most, 26.2 per game.

25 players played in every game for their team, as listed here.

Of these, Brad Hadwin has been ever-present since opening day 2015 and, with 80 consecutive appearances, is just one game short of Andy Gard-ner’s record.

243 guest appearances were made by 108 individuals. Vipers used the

most guests (17 in 11 games) while Barflies had the most different guests (13). Lions and Stingers used no guests at all. Guests came from all but three teams (Colts, Dodgers and Swingers)

Hannah Wint (Stingers)

Hannah contacted Stingers in early May having attended one rookie session and had no softball or baseball ex-perience but wanted to get stuck into matches. She came to training that week-end and joined formally for her first game the fol-lowing Tuesday, and the rest is history.

Hannah’s debut game on May 7th saw her first home run – a cracking shot to the far left field which saw her round the bases easily. The follow-ing week, her first game at infield, she was female MVP for the first time and on in her third game she followed up her maiden home run with a second, and was MVP for the second subsequent week. She made it three MVPs from three games the week after.

By early June, Hannah had made 2nd base her own, gaining her First Softball Bruise by getting her ankle in the way of a blistering line drive, and she remained at 2nd base for the rest of the season, gaining a further four MVP statuses on the way.

Top of both club Female Home Run (3) and Female MVP (7) tables for her first ever season having never played a game of softball before this year, Hannah stands out as an exceptional rookie whose commitment to training, socials and interactions off the field have been as awesome as her contri-butions on it. CP

Georgina Pugh (Thunder IV)

up how to score and be-(Continued on page 14)

Rookie of the Year nominees Annie Downes again made the most guest ap-pearances (14), for seven different teams, though Kate Flanagan was only one behind in both counts.

31 transfers were logged during the sea-son, four more than last year, with

two players transferring twice, not including the Vipers players allowed “free” transfers after their team folded. As usual, several of them were in the final weeks, of players whose regular team had finished their season.

35.6 is the average age of MSL play-ers, pretty much the same as last

year (even though we’re all one year older!). The youngest turned 14 during the season. The old-est rostered player was 71½ on opening day. Mavericks II have taken over from the Bats as the oldest team, averaging just under 42¾. Swingers (27.1) are the youngest. 17 rostered players are under 18, a total which increases every year.

Out of 21 different postcode areas, fractionally under half our players (291) have a Manchester postcode, while 139 live in Stockport. The most popular postcode is M20 (53) with SK8 (40) some way behind.

96% of games had a neutral umpire, just up on last year. Tuesdays

and Thursdays had 100% coverage. 28 different people umpired, an increase on last year, led again by Paul Fagan who umpired 32 times in all five divisions, as did Jonny Creelman (28 games).

came one of the key scorers for the team. Even when injury has struck, she has always stayed to be the team cheerleader. Georgina has played a number of tournaments, playing for higher divi-sion teams as well as travelling down to Bristol to play for a team completely unknown to her. BJ

Sophie Addison (Base Invaders)

Sophie joined Base Invad-ers part way through

the winter indoor season and imme-diately made an impact. She

showed great skill at the game and over the season has honed her knowledge of the

game to become a real threat at the age of 16. Not only has she played for Base Invaders in the league but she has also made tournament ap-pearances for Tempest, Tigers and Bombers around the country. Her ability has been noted around the league and further afield with nota-ble performances in tournaments and guesting up as far as Division 1 where she scored a home-run in her first appearance. Her season was cut short by a bad injury at the Diamond series but her future is bright and everyone is excited to see what she can do moving forward. CN

Daisy Goodenough (Titans)

Daisy in my opinion is the definition of a rookie – someone who started a new sport, in a new city, attended rookies, found a team, stuck with it and loves it!

Daisy joined the Titans this year after attending

Rookie of the Year nominations (Cont. from page 13)

the first rookie sessions, she was recommended to join us by Linni after she had shown early softball ability. Since joining the Titans, Daisy has become our solid 1st baser, she will do anything to stop that ball, so the team were relieved when she finally in-vested in some shin pads! Daisy would disagree but her batting is strong, and it’s only a matter of time till she features on the home run table (watch out div 2!)

Daisy loves softball and is always wanting to learn and improve and an example of this is that she con-tinued to attend Linni’s rookie sessions throughout the season and takes any opportunity to guest or play for other teams!

If you cut Daisy she would bleed Titan blood, her humour and personality is definitely that of a Titan. She is not afraid to have a joke with the team and other teams and most importantly putting up with my silly humour and her new nickname Jileh (queue Daisy eye roll)! Daisy has definitely become a much loved member of our team and we cannot wait to see the player she becomes! Daisy isn’t just Goode-nough … she is brilliant!! AD

Rachael Wake (Thunder IV)

Rachael is one of the most positive and moti-vating players on Thun-der IV. She has been one of the key people in organising Thunder IV team training sessions, and always encourages people to attend. She has also been responsible for organising socials for the team, and hasn’t missed one yet! Rachael has always been willing to help out other teams, playing a number of tournaments for higher division teams. BJ

If a further tie break is needed, we have an extra fiendishly difficult tie-break question. Use of the internet is allowed, except for the final tie-break. For those reading this on-line after the Ball, answers will appear in Bases Loaded Volume 26 Issue 1.
