The Solemnity of Mary's Conception is clearly known as early as the

7th century in the East, and may even date to as early as the 5th century

in the Churches of Syria. The feast spread to the West, at least by the 9th

century. The feast and doctrine initially were opposed by the Dominicans,

while the Franciscans argued in favor of the Immaculate Conception and

its feast. For awhile, a great debate raged about the doctrine, even up

until the 19th century. The Council of Basle in 1439 affirmed that the Im-

maculate Conception was a pious belief in accord with the Catholic faith.

In 1476 Pope Sixtus IV approved the feast with its own Mass and Office,

and in 1708, Pope Clement XI extended the feast to the universal Church,

making it a holy day of obligation. In 1847, Pope Pius IX proclaimed

Mary as patroness of the United States, under the title of her immaculate

conception. Thus, to this day, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Concep-

tion is the patronal feast of the United States.

The Orthodox and many Eastern Catholics celebrate the Feast of the

Conception of Mary on December 9. This places Mary's conception 9

months, minus a day, from her birth (celebrated September 8). This ap-

parently symbolizes that while Christ had a perfect humanity, even though

Mary was the Mother of God, she did not (since Christ spent 9 full months

in the womb, from March 25-December 25). However, the Orthodox do

not celebrate Mary's immaculate conception on December 9 as Eastern

Catholics do. The West observes the feast on December 8. While this

dogma took centuries to develop and unfold, as did the dogma of the

Trinity, the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception is certainly fitting for

one whom the Eastern Christians call panagia, i.e. "all-holy," and who bore

God-Made-Man, Jesus Christ.

zmianę sposobu myślenia: przedrostek

W nawróceniu chodzi o taką przemianę

sposobu myślenia, która pociąga za sobą

zmianę postępowania, tak aby ostatecznie

nie tylko umysł, ale całe Ŝycie człowieka

zostało skierowane ku Bogu i ku Jego

królestwu.

Wezwanie do wydania godnego owocu

nawrócenia Jan Chrzciciel kierował do elity

religijnej narodu Ŝydowskiego: do

kapłanów, saduceuszy, do ówczesnych

teologów, którymi byli faryzeusze. Oni zaś,

aby usprawiedliwić swoją bierną postawę,

powoływali się na poboŜność, na wiedzę

teologiczną, na tradycję. Mówili z dumą:

Abrahama mamy za ojca. Tymczasem

dopiero w społeczności ludzi nawróconych,

którzy wypowiedzieli walkę grzechowi,

będzie mógł zapanować powszechny

pokój, o jakim bardzo obrazowym językiem

mówi dziś prorok Izajasz: Niemowlę igrać

będzie na norze kobry, dziecko włoŜy swą

rękę do kryjówki Ŝmii.

When the Lord Jesus comes "he baptizes with the

Holy Spirit and with fire" (Matthew 3:11). Do you

want to be on fire for God and for the return of

the Lord Jesus when he comes in his glory? Fire in

biblical times was associated with God and with his

action in the world and in the lives of his people.

God sometimes manifested his presence by use of

fire, such as the burning bush which was not con-

sumed when God spoke to Moses (Exodus 3:2).

The image of fire was also used to symbolize

God's glory (Ezekiel 1:4, 13), his protective pres-

ence (2 Kings 6:17), his holiness (Deuteronomy

4:24), righteous judgment (Zechariah 13:9), and his

wrath against sin (Isaiah 66:15-16). It is also used

of the Holy Spirit (Matthew 3:11 and Acts 2:3).

God's fire both purifies and cleanses, and it inspires

a reverent fear of God and of his word in us.

John the Baptist was more than a prophet (Luke

7:26). John was the voice of the Consoler who is

coming (John 1:23; Isaiah 40:1-3). He completed

the cycle of prophets begun by Elijah (Matthew

11:13-14). What the prophets had carefully

searched for and angels longed to see, now came

to completion as John made the way ready for the

coming of the Messiah, God's Annointed Son, the

Lord Jesus Christ. With John the Baptist, the Holy

Spirit begins the restoration to the human race of

the "divine likeness", prefiguring what would be

achieved with and in the Lord Jesus.

John's baptism was for repentance – turning

away from sin and taking on a new way of life ac-

cording to God's word. Our baptism in Jesus Christ

by water and the Spirit results in a new birth and

entry into God's kingdom as his beloved sons and

daughters (John 3:5). Jesus is ready to give us the

fire of his Spirit that we may radiate the joy and

truth of the gospel to a world in desparate need of

God's light and truth. His word has power to change

and transform our lives that we may be lights point-

ing others to Christ. Like John the Baptist, we too are

called to give testimony to the light and truth of Je-

sus Christ. Do you point others to Christ in the way

you live, work, and speak?
