Preface
This is the second year of the award of Gates CambridgeScholarships. These highly competitive scholarships are given forgraduate work in Cambridge and are open to students from allcountries of the world outside the UK. I am delighted both asChairman of the Gates Cambridge Trust and as Vice Chancellor ofthe University to report that there are now 236 scholars from 54different countries undertaking advanced study at Cambridge.
This handbook gives information about them and the diversity of their interests andbackground. They are studying subjects across the entire range of knowledge andthrough their learning will be well placed to engage with the challenges of themodern world.
I greatly enjoyed meeting the first generation of Gates scholars who came toCambridge a year ago: individually and collectively they have contributed significantlyto the Collegiate University and they have had an impact on graduate life here. Manyare in mid-course and are still in Cambridge. On behalf of my fellow Trustees I wouldlike to thank them all. In particular, we send our very best wishes for the future tothose who have completed the course for which they were awarded a Scholarship inOctober 2001.
I would like again to express the gratitude of the University to the Gates Foundation for the generous benefaction which makes possible the award of these scholarshipsto so many gifted young men and women. Gates Cambridge Scholars2002Scholars are listed alphabetically by name.The list includes all current GatesCambridge Scholars, although some ofthem will start their courses in January orApril 2003 and three of the Scholars havepermission to delay starting until October2003. A number of the Scholars listed asworking for the PhD degree will berequired to complete successfully in 2003 a post-graduate certificate or Mastersdegree or similar qualification before beingallowed to proceed with work for thedoctorate. Other Scholars will be workingaway from Cambridge during the academicyear whilst undertaking field work or other study as an integral part of theirdoctoral research.

Through my PhD research in Cambridge Iwill attempt to examine the relationshipbetween the European Union (EU) and theCaucasus, using empirical data andtheoretical analysis. My decision to choosethis subject for my PhD research has beeninfluenced by my previous degree inEuropean Studies, a posting in diplomaticservice at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, where I was dealing withEU-Azerbaijani issues, and most recently
my MPhil research at Cambridge on theEU-Caucasus relations have influenced mydecision to choose this subject for my PhDresearch. The research will constitute thefirst attempt to apply a theoreticalframework to explain the whole complexityof current relations between the EU and thecountries of the Caucasus. Furthermore, the application of theoretical frameworkcould pave the ground for drafting possiblescenarios of how these relations may beexpected to evolve in the future.

I come from a Third World country wherethere are many areas in which aprofessional approach is needed to fightpoverty and inequality.
