nIghT EATIng SYnDroME (nES)
Saint Louis University is investigating the effectiveness of three behav-ioral interventions for night eating syndrome (NES) in a study conducted in the Department of Psychology. Jillon Vander Wal, Ph.D., an Associate Professor and Principle Investigator of the study, is excited as very few studies have examined the role of behavioral, non-medication interven-tions. Participation involves attending three sessions for a total of 4.5 hours during a four-week period. Participants receive information about the disorder and are asked to complete questionnaires and take-home assignments. Participants are paid for their time and assignment com-pletion. To learn more about the study, contact the nES study at (314) 977-2024 or email [email protected].
NES is a disorder that has gained recent attention due to its role in un-wanted weight gain and obesity. The symptoms of NES include a lack of morning appetite, eating too much after the evening meal and/or eating during awakenings from sleep, and difficulty falling and/or remaining asleep. According to Dr. Vander Wal, “Many persons with NES keep food near their beds for when they wake during the night.” NES is associated with daytime sleepiness and depressed mood. NES tends to be chronic, although the symptoms may vary over time.
The causes of NES are not well known. NES tends to run in families sug-gesting that it may be genetic. It usually develops during early adult-hood and is worsened by stress. NES occurs in men and women as well as persons from various races and ethnic groups. Persons with NES may struggle with eating disorders, sleep disorders, weight gain, and depression. Dr. Vander Wal thinks that NES may involve “a genetic pre-disposition, triggered by stress, resulting in a disruption of the sleep/wake and eating cycles.” That is, persons with NES eat later in the day, resulting in a conflict with sleep.
Four studies (clinical trials) have investigated the use of medications for the treatment of NES. Three studies found that the drug sertraline reduced the symptoms of NES. Dr. Vander Wal’s research team conducted a study which showed that the drug escitalopram was beneficial. However, in her study, participants also responded to a placebo (sugar pill), so many of the outcomes were not considered significant. According to Vander Wal, “although these medications show promise, non-medication alternatives are important for persons who cannot or would prefer not to take them.”
Aside from medications, two studies (clinical trials) have investigated behavioral interventions for NES. One study showed that a form of relaxation training benefited a small group of persons over a short period of time. Another study involving cognitive behavioral therapy, a type of psychotherapy, also benefitted a small group of people. Ac-cording to Dr. Vander Wal, “the results of these two studies support the need for the present investigation.”
Saint Louis University hopes that its research efforts will lead to increased recognition of this syndrome, better knowledge of its fea-tures, and more effective treatment interventions. The NES study is funded by the university’s President’s Research Fund, which promotes promising new research.

MICroSofT’S nEW InCEnTIvE for EngInEErIng hIrES: bAConby Chris Matyszczyk
In an attempt to hire new engineers for its kinect for Windows team, Microsoft sets up a bacon cart in Seattle tech-centric areas.
I was once introduced to a chef who believes that bacon is a fine ingredient in a dessert.
Such chefs I would describe as beyond cognitive salvation. However, Microsoft appears to suddenly believe that bacon can play an even higher social role: as the commercial equivalent of an aphrodisiac.
For, as the Seattle Times reports, the company has decided that the best way to hire engineers to its Kinect for Windows team is to offer them bacon.
Yes, free bacon. Will engineers make a rasher decision?
Engineers, you see, aren’t moved by vast package full of stock options, housing allowances, or multiple-hand massages. No, no. You have to appeal to their most fundamental emotions.
So Microsoft has sent a bacon vendor to areas of Seattle where engi-neers prowl for food. You know, like just outside Amazon’s HQ.
You will stunned into beyond a food coma to discover that this is the brainchild of an ad agency. I know this because the hiring hard drive--no, lard drive--for engineers has a slogan: “Wake Up and Smell the Future.”
The churlish and the knee-jerking would immediately mutter that Mi-crosoft represents the future about as much as Pat Boone represents contemporary music.
But others might see that the company’s bacon grind shows its new, more cuddly side. It understands that it needs to connect with the people. It needs to show its human face.
And what better way to show that than through the intoxicating smell of perfect breakfast meat? We will, I am confident, soon hear stories about an Amazon engineer signing a contract with Microsoft on the street, while under the influence of pig fumes.
