GANIT WEEK AT DELHI PUBLIC SCHOOL, BANGALORE EAST

- Galileo. Mathematics expresses itself in every sphere of life and has got vivid importance in our everyday life providing its essence. Thus, the GANIT Week is being celebrated in our school premises with a motto to create awareness among the present generation regarding the role of Mathematics in our daily sequence. The importance of Mathematics has never been greater than now and for the foreseeable future. Mathematical skills are crucial for a wide array of analytical, technological, scientific, economic and soft skill applications. Training students to become adept users of Mathematics and to appreciate its usefulness is of paramount importance for the future. Delhi Public School Bangalore East organized GANIT WEEK from 16th to 22nd December 2015 in commemoration of the great mathematician S. Ramanujan’s birth anniversary. Week-long activities were organized with the aim to infuse spirit of innovation and aptitude towards the subject of Mathematics & also to increase scientific temper. The activities included for Senior School were PROJECT MAKING (based on Probability Games), SUDOKU COMPETETION as well as a MATH QUIZ. The students participated with great zeal. The students enjoyed celebrating the GANIT week. It was informative, innovative, motivational and generated awareness on Mathematicians. The activities proved to be fruitful to the students.

SUDOKU COMPETITION started the ball rolling. Student solved the SUDOKU of the day’s newspaper. Students did enjoy doing it as it is one of the activities which they love to do it the moment they get their daily edition. This activity would have definitely initiated some minds with sparks of liking the subject wading off their fear towards the subject. And also would have enhanced their logical and critical thinking. This also enables the child to build confidence and attain a sense of achievement.

The students of DPS East geared up for the challenge. They had the task of designing ‘PROBABILITY GAMES’. The children displayed mathematical board games, spellbinding mathematical tricks, probability maze, bowling games, deal or no deal game etc.

A MATHEMATICS QUIZ was also conducted for Senior School. There were 2 rounds on Logical Reasoning, Mental Ability, General Mathematics etc. and the difficulty level of the questions asked increased with every successive round. The Quiz evoked a good response from the zealous participants.

Students worked on project GOLDEN RATIO. The aim was to connect the

Golden Ratio to direct natural objects they might see in their everyday life.

The students of Middle School also showcased their brilliance by answering questions in GANIT Quiz. The students showed great enthusiasm and group work in Mathematical relay. Sudoku puzzle solving was really mind stimulating exercise for students. Students showed skills in solving Mathematical Puzzles and Rubik’s Cube. Students were also involved in the projects on golden ratio, golden rectangle and Fibonacci series. All the participants showed their aptitude and curiosity with full vigour and spirit.

Math is fun and everywhere. It helps to think in different ways either be Logical, Analytical, Numerical etc. As a part of GANIT week celebration, students of Primary School have done the following activities -

1. Mathematical relay 2. Maths project based on shape, space and basic geometry 3. Mathematical quiz

Students were enthusiastic about the activities once they were made understood about the importance of GANIT week. The activities were started with discussions on Srinivas Ramanujan, his education, his theories on infinity, speciality of Ramanujan's magic square, and how great a mathematician genius he was. Students were surprised to know about his contributions.

Glimpses of the activities

Mathematical relay - Mathematical relay was a very interesting activity as it was something of a new experience for the students. They enjoyed thoroughly and cherished every moment of it. They had to answer as well as run with question Baton to make their team win. Their mind and body were working proactively to make their team win as it was a team game.

Maths project based on shape, space and basic geometry-

They made a chart of mathematical games, Maths in mechanics, 3d shapes. They also made a model of circle with point pins placed equally on the circumference. The centre was marked to show that the length of all the radii are same for a particular circle, diameter is the longest chord etc with a thread.

Mathematical quiz - Mathematical quiz was a very interesting activity where in each student had worked very hard to score more for their teams. It was really very touchy moments to see all bright and proud little faces lit up once the team members gave correct answers and the team scored.

The primary objective of the celebration was to identify, encourage, promote and nurture the talent and also to reduce the fear of mathematics. Apart from the daily learning and approach to problem solving in Mathematics, this was an entire new and interesting approach.

In all, the GANIT Week in DPS Bangalore East was a great success as students, through this initiative by CBSE, got a platform to enjoy numerals, display mathematical skills and perceive the connection of mathematics and its concepts with the real life.

Overall GANIT week celebration was a learning experience for them and they are looking for the next GANITOTSAV!!!!!!
