Welcome from the Presidentof IVSA 2013-2014

Dear delegates,

First of all I would like to congratulate you with being selected as a delegate for the 63rd IVSA Congress in Indonesia. From the moment that IVSA Indonesia was elected to host this congress, students from all over the world have had great interest in making the trip to this tropical paradise.

Besides getting the opportunity to see this beautiful country, the Organizing Committee has a great itinerary waiting for you. The educational programme with the theme 'Safe Animal, World in Peace' includes interesting lectures and workshops about topics such as animal welfare, disaster management and One Health.

Next to the educational programme, there will be time for you to participate in various social and cultural activities. You will have the opportunity to see the beautiful temples of Indonesia, visit the traditional market in Yogyakarta and discover a new world below the surface. In between all these experiences you will also have the chance to enjoy the delectable Indonesian cuisine.

With this amazing programme, that combines education, nature and culture, I have no doubt that you will have the time of your life. I also believe that due to this unique combination of topics and activities, you will get a better understanding of how veterinary medicine is taught and practised in Indonesia, and that you will learn more about the global dimension of veterinary medicine.

In between all this, we also need to discuss ways to improve our global network of veterinary students, and find out how we can ensure a sustainable future of our association. These topics will be discussed during the General Assembly, which is the decision making body of IVSA. I look forward to getting your input and hear your opinion on the recent developments, upcoming partnerships and potential improvements proposed by the Executive Committee.

I wish all of you a great time at the 63rd IVSA Congress in Indonesia. I hope that you will learn more about the global dimension of veterinary medicine, enjoy the beautiful country Indonesia and create longlasting friendships.

I am sure that this congress will be an experience that you will never forget!

Warm regards,

Pim PolakPresident 2013-2014

About IndonesiaIndonesia is a sovereign state in Southeast Asia and Oceania.

Indonesia is an archipelago comprising 13,466 islands. It encom-

passes 33 provinces and 1 Special Administrative Region (for being governed by a pre-colonial monarchy) with

over 238 million people, making it the world's fourth most populous country. Indonesia's republic form of government comprises an elected

legislature and president. The nation's capital city is Jakarta. The coun-

try shares land borders with Papua New Guinea, East Timor,

and Malaysia. Other neighboring countries include Singapore, the

Philippines, –Australia, Palau, and the Indian territory of the

Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Indonesia is a founding member

of ASEAN and a member of the G-20 major economies. The

Indonesian economy is the world's 16th largest by nominal GDP.

Sulawesi, Nusa Tenggara, and Maluku – having been long separated from the continental landmasses - have developed their own unique flora and fauna. Papua was part of the Australian landmass, and is home to a

closely related to that of Australia, including over 600 bird species.

unique fauna and flora

Indonesia's size, tropical climate, and archipelagic geography, support the world's second highest level of biodiversity (after Brazil), and its flora and

fauna is a mixture of Asian and species. The islands of

the (Sumatra, Java, Borneo, and Bali) were once linked to the Asian mainland, and have a wealth of Asian fauna. Large species

such as the

, were once abundant as far east as Bali, but numbers and distribution have dwindled drastically. Forests cover approximately 60% of the coun-try. In Sumatra and Kalimantan, these are predominantly of Asian species. However, the forests of the smaller, and more densely populated Java, ha-ve largely been removed for human habitation and agriculture.

BIOTA and ENVIRONMENT

Indonesia consists of hundreds of distinct native ethnic and linguistic groups. The largest – and politically dominant ethnic group are the

Javanese. A shared identity has developed, defined by a national lang-uage, ethnic diversity, religious pluralism within a majority Muslim pop-ulation, and a history of colonialism and rebellion against it. Indonesia's national motto, "Bhinneka Tunggal Ika" ("Unity in Diversity" literally, "many, yet one"), articulates the diversity that shapes the country. Despite its large population and densely populated regions, Indonesia has vast

areas of wilderness that support the world's second highest level of bio-diversity. The country has abundant natural resources, yet poverty remains widespread.

The Indonesian archipelago has been an important trade region since at

least the 7th century, when Srivijaya and then later Majapahit traded

with China and India. Local rulers gradually absorbed foreign cultural,

religious and political models from the early centuries CE, and Hin-du and Buddhist kingdoms flourished. Indonesian history has

been influenced by foreign powers drawn to its natural resources. Mus-lim traders brought the now-dominant Islam, while European powers brought Christianity and fought one another to monopolize trade in the

Spice Islands of Maluku during the Age of Discovery. Following

three and a half centuries of Dutch colonialism, Indonesia secured its independence after World War II. Indonesia's history has sin-

ce been turbulent, with challenges posed by natural disasters, corrupt-ion, separatism, a democratization process, and periods of rapid economic change.

Indonesia's high population and rapid industrialization present serious , which are often given a lower priority due to high

poverty levels and weak, under-resourced governance. Issues include ) and related wildfires causing

over parts of western Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore; over-exploitation of marine resources; and environmental problems asso-ciated with rapid urbanization and , including air pollution, , garbage management, and reliable water and

services. Deforestation and the destruction of peatlands make Indonesia the world's third largest emitter of greenhouse gases.

threatens the survival of indigenous and endemic species, including 140 species of

, and 15 identified as critically endangered, including . Much of Indonesia's deforestation is caused by forest clearing for the palm oil Industry, which has cleared 18 million hectares of forest for palm oil expansion. Palm oil expansion requires land reallocation as well as changes to the local and natural ecosystems. Palm oil expansion can generate wealth for local communities if done right. If down wrong it can degrade ecosystems and cause social conflicts.

Indonesia is second only to Australia in terms of total endemic species, with 36% of its 1,531 species of bird and 39% of its 515 species of mam-mal being endemic. Indonesia's 80,000 kilometers (50,000 miles) of coas-tline are surrounded by tropical seas that contribute to the country's high level of biodiversity. Indonesia has a range of sea and coastal

, including tidal flats, algal beds, and small island

ecosystems. Indonesia is one of countries with the world's greatest diversity of coral reef fish with more than 1,650 species in eastern Indonesia only. The British naturalist, , described a divid-ing line between the distribution of Indonesia's Asian and Australasian species. Known as the , it runs roughly north-south along the edge of the Sunda Shelf, bet-ween Kalimantan and Sulawesi, and along the deep and Bali. West of the line the flora and fauna are more Asian; moving east from Lombok, they are increasingly Australian. In his 1869 book, Wallace described numerous species unique to the area. The region of islands between his line and New Guinea is now termed .

CultureIndonesia has about 300 ethnic groups, each with cultural identities

developed over centuries, and influenced by Indian, Arabic, Chinese,

and European sources. Traditional Javanese and Balinese dances, for

example, contain aspects of Hindu culture and mythology, as do way-ang kulit (shadow puppet) performances. Textiles such as batik,

ikat, ulos and songket are created across Indonesia in styles that

vary by region. The most dominant influences on Indonesian arch-itecture have traditionally been Indian; however, Chinese, Arab, and

European architectural influences have been significant.

Sports in Indonesia are generally male-orientated and spectator

sports are often associated with illegal gambling. The most popular

sports are badminton and football. Indonesian players have

won the Thomas Cup (the world team championship of men's bad-

minton) thirteen of the twenty-six times that it has been held since 1949,

as well as numerous Olympic medals since the sport gained full Olym-

pic status in 1992. Its women have won the Uber Cup, the female

equivalent of the Thomas Cup, twice, in 1994 and 1996. Liga Ind-onesia is the country's premier football club league. Traditional sports

include sepak takraw, and bull racing in Madura. In areas with a

history of tribal warfare, mock fighting contests are held, such as caci in

Flores and pasola in Sumba. Pencak Silat is an Indonesian

martial art.

Indonesian cuisine varies by region and is based on Chinese, Eur-

opean, Middle Eastern, and Indian precedents. Rice is the main staple food and is served with side dishes of meat and vegetables. Spices

(notably chili), coconut milk, fish and chicken are fundamental ing-

redients. Indonesian traditional music includes gamelan and keron-cong. The Indonesian film industry's popularity peaked in the

1980s and dominated cinemas in Indonesia, although it declined signifi-

cantly in the early 1990s. Between 2000 and 2005, the number of Indo-

nesian films released each year has steadily increased.

The oldest evidence of writing in Indonesia is a series of Sanskrit ins-

criptions dated to the 5th century. Important figures in modern Indone-

sian literature include: Dutch author Multatuli, who criticized treat-

ment of the Indonesians under Dutch colonial rule; Sumatrans Muha-mmad Yamin and Hamka, who were influential pre-independence

nationalist writers and politicians; and proletarian writer Pramoedya Ananta Toer, Indonesia's most famous novelist. Many of Indonesia's

peoples have strongly rooted oral traditions, which help to define

and preserve their cultural identities.

About the places visited

Museum FatahillahLocated in the historic Old Jakarta Kota area, Taman Fatahillah square

offers three of the city's most interesting museums. Once the heart of the

colonial administration in the 18th century the square underwent a major

restoration in the 1970's. A fountain in the middle of square once as the

main water supply for the former colonial capital. The Portuguese can-

non on the north side of the square is reportedly an impressive font of

fertility. Jakarta History Museum is the one displaying the history of the

development of the City of Jakarta, both the events and the community,

from the prehistory until these present days. This museum is located in a

building of cultural property which in the past known as Stadhuis, the

City Hall of Batavia. As written on an inscription of the Museum col-

lection, the building was constructed in 1707 by the city government of

Batavia during the period of VOC and Governor General Abraham van

Riebeeck inaugurated it in 1710. This building is located in front of a

park, which in the past was known as Stadhuisplein, the City Hall Park,

and now it is called Taman Fatahillah.

Indonesia Safari ParkIf you like to observe wild animals like tigers, lions and crocodiles

in their native habitat, then Taman Safari Indonesia is just for you.

Taman Safari Indonesia or the Indonesian Safari Park is a conser-

vation center as well as a modern zoological garden with various

collections of flora and fauna. In this Park, you will not only enjoy

the beauty of it's nature, but also interact directly or watch the

animals wander around freely. Visitors can also travel in this con-

servation area using their private car or a provided bus through

these amazing wild habitats. Taman Safari has a collection of ani-

mals from nearly all over the world and local animals such as kom-

odos, rhinoceros, bisons, sun bears, white tigers, elephants, anoa,

etc. There are more than 2,500 animals in Taman Safari Bogor with

hundreds of species currently being maintained. Upon entering

Taman Safari Bogor, visitors will notice sensational shady trees and

cool weather from Mount Gede Pangrango. It will certainly attract

you to start your adventure in open nature. The management

offers caravan-services for staying the night. A caravan provides a

modest kitchen, toilet and comfortable beds. One is enough for a

small family of four.

Prambanan TempleAs the largest Hindu temple in Southeast Asia, the beautiful and graceful

temple of Prambanan is a magnificent spectacle and an icon of Indone-

sia's cultural heritage. Located not far from the Buddhist Borobudur

temple, the proximity of the two temples tells us that on Java, Buddhism

and Hinduism lived peacefully next to one another. Prambanan is known

locally as Roro Jonggrang, coming from the legend of the 'slender virgin'.

According to the legend once upon a time, there was a young and power-

ful man named Bandung Bondowoso. He wanted to marry a beautiful

princess named Roro Jonggrang. Her father, the king, agreed and forced

her to marry Bandung Bondowoso. Butm Sita did not love him yet could

not refuse him. After careful consideration, she thought of a way to refu-

se Bondowoso, whose magical power was well-known. She decided she

would agree but only if Bondowoso built 1,000 temples in one night

before the break of dawn. And so complicated.

Ramayana Ballet ShowWhich was opened by Deputy Minister for Education and Culture, Wiendu

Nuryanti on Friday evening, 12th October, performing their own interpre-

tation and choreography of this most beloved epic drama. “This proves

how widely the Ramayana epic has spread in Indonesia , which has been

interpreted through different cultural frames”, said Wiendu Nuryanti. “It

also shows”, added the Deputy Minister,” that the Ramayana reliefs etched

in stone around the graceful Prambanan temple continue to inspire artists

to further create new forms of stage performances”, reports Kompas daily.

The Prambanan Stage was originally officiated by Indonesia's first Presi-

dent Soekarno in 1961, and has since then never failed to perform the Ra-

mayana epic during every full moon nights.

Borobudur TempleThe magnificent Borobudur temple is the world's biggest Buddhist monu-

ment, an ancient site widely considered to be one of the world's

seven wonders. Built in the 9th century during the reign of the

Syailendra dynasty, the temple's design in Gupta architecture

reflects India's influence on the region, yet there are enough indigenous

understand why it is Indonesia's most visited tourist attraction and a

f a m o u s i c o n o f I n d o n e s i a ' s c u l t u r a l h e r i t a g e .

Located on the island of Java, the temple sits majestically on a hilltop

overlooking lush green fields and distant hills. It covers an enormous area,

measuring 123 x 123 meters. The monument is a marvel of design, decor-

ated with 2,672 relief panels and 504 Buddha statues. The architecture and

stonework of this temple has no equal. And it was built without using any

kind of cement or mortar! The structure is like a set of massive interlock-

ing Lego blocks held together without any glue.

Drini BeachLocated on the east coast of Sundak Beach, the beach that is lined by

rocky cliff is one of the beaches that presents different views with other

beaches in Gunung Kidul. Not only decorated with white sand, rocky

hill, and the clear blue water as if calling for tourists to dive into it, Drini

Beach is also equipped with a row of restaurants and cafes and inns that

will spoil tourists. A variety of menu ranging from seafood to fried rice

can be ordered in a restaurant facing the beach. At night, gazebos at the

beach will look pretty as lit by flickering lights. Enjoying dinner at the

cafe accompanied by the sound of the wind and the waves will be an

unforgettable romantic experience. Mentioning the name of Drini Beach

ealier got a lot of controversy. Drini is not the name of the beach, but the

name of the cafe and restaurant owner. Since the name Drini was dis-

played on the board of this beach cafe and restaurant, eventually people

called this beach by the name of Drini Beach. While the government

named this beach as Pulang Syawal Beach. But the name of Drini is

more popular and more commonly known than Pulang Syawal. The in-

volvement of private parties in the management of Drini Beach appa-

rently helped bring a positive impact. Unlike the other beaches that are

rather dirty, the shoreline along Indrayanti Beach looks clean and free

from rubbish. This is because the manager does not hesitate to impose a

fine for each waste disposed by tourists carelessly. Therefore drini Beach

becomes a comfortable place to visit.

Lava Tour MerapiThe lava tour started from Kepuharjo village, Cangkringan sub district,

Sleman regency, Yogyakarta. It is about 30 Km away from Yogyakarta

or 5 Km away from Kaliurang Tourism Park. Located in 1100 meters

above sea level, Kaliadem has relatively cool and refreshing air. Now-

adays, the green forest of Kaliadem does no longer exist; it is replaced

with white stones and sand coming from the remaining of the eruption.

From the area, visitors can see the peak of the mountain without needing

any tools. Visitors can also visit the graveyard, the remains of Mbah

Maridjan (believed to be the Merapi caretaker) and the bunker where

there were two victims of Merapi eruption in 2006 died. To explore the

area, there are some alternatives that you can choose. You can use ojek

(motorcycle cab) to get to the higher area where Mbah Maridjan's grave-

yard lies or you can simply walk because it is only about 1 Km away

from the parking area. If you want to explore the area by yourself you

can rent trail motorcycle. If you have a lot of time, you can try to tour

the area by hiring jeep. There are three options offered when you decide

to rent the jeep. The packages are the short route of 1.5 hour, the medium

route of 2-2.5 hour and the long route that needs 3-3.5 hour. The driver

of the jeep will take you to explore the areas that are damaged by the

Merapi eruption.

House of raminten The House of Raminten is a traditional restaurant. It

has unique, antique, elegant concept in it. Considered as unique because

although The House of Raminten is a traditional herbal cafe but it does not

miss the presence of the modern element which can be seen from the ap-

pearance of the waiter who took a combination of jarik and black vest and

also not only the uniqueness of the waiters appearance, the House of Ra-

Luwes Batik factory Batik is an old technique to paint a cloth with hot

liquid wax, then dying it into coloring water. For hundreds years ago, peo-

ple in Indonesia had already known it, every place has its own styles, text-

ures and philosophies. The diversity of Indonesian batik is connected by

the same technique. In Java, Batik can be found in Jogjakarta, Solo, Ci-

rebon, Pekalongan, Lasem or Tuban. Mostly in an old city, you can find

batik as a part of civilization and lifestyle. The traditional ambience also

influences batik makers to put on old batik technique. They haven't been

using any machine tools, only 'canting' and hot dark wax. Canting is a pen

ClimateBecause of its proximity to equator, Indonesia has tropical climate. Gene-

rally, the weather is hot and humid. Indonesian climate is divided into two

distinct seasons: dry and rainy seasons. Most of Indonesia has their rainy

seasons from October through April, but certain places like Maluku have

theirs from March to August. During the rainy season, rain starts around

noon and lasts into the afternoon. Some areas can have sudden showers for

more than two hours.

The dry season does not mean that there are no rains. In fact tropical show-

ers in a dry season's afternoon is a regular affair. The average annual pre-

cipitation is 1800mm. The temperature is almost constant except for the

exceptionally rainy season's nights, when it can drop. The temperature on

the coast is about 28° C Celsius and drops dramatically in the highlands.

For instance, in the highlands of Irian Jaya, temperatures at night can drop

to about 7° C, while during daytime they reach to about 22° C.

Make sure that your visit does not coincide with holiday festivities such

as Musl im hol iday Eid (or Lebaran, l ike Indones ians

are fond to say), because the traffic tends to be heavy

Indonesia's climate can be hot and humid, so bringing along sunblocks

and moisturizers during dry season is recommended. No need to bring

umbrellas during rainy season because they are abundant and can easily

be bought even in small shops. You might need extra clothing though,

and you can purchase them almost anywhere.

Executive Committeeand Trustee ReportsPim PolakPresidentDuring the second part of my term I have been focusing on achievingthe goals that I hadn't achieved yet and continuing my other main activities. As President my main tasks are representing IVSA externally and directing the work of ExCo.

At the event I had the opportunity to have a meeting with a representativefrom the World Society of the Protection of Animals (WSPA), now called World Animal Protection, and I got invited for a meeting at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Next to that we also got the opportunity to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which is a partnership contract, between IVSA and OIE.

Another important meeting I attended was the General Assembly of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE). This meeting took place in Paris, France at the end of May. The OIE is responsible for improving animal health worldwide. A total of 178 countries are members of OIE and they maintain permanent relations with 45 other international and regional organizations. For us it is a great opportunity to be present, so that we can create more awareness about IVSA. Besides that, it is also the perfect place for networking and to establish new partnerships.

One of the meetings I attended was the General Assembly of European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education (EAEVE), where all the Deans of the Veterinary Faculties of Europe and beyond gather. This meeting was held in Murcia, Spain in the second half of May. I was invited to this General Assembly to represent IVSA and give a presentation about 'student involvement in research' because 'research' was the main theme of the event. My main objective for this meeting wasto inform all the Deans about the work that IVSA is doing and to encourage them to support their students in getting (more) involved in our association. At the beginning of my presentation I gave an introduction to IVSA and updated them about recent developments. Besides that I tried to talk to as many Deans as possible and discuss about the involvement of IVSA in their schools.

As said, next to my task of directing the work of ExCo, my other key task is to represent IVSA externally. This is mainly at congresses or other events of the partners that we work closely with. Even though all the traveling involved in this consumes a lot of my time and energy, it is also one of the parts that inspires and re-energizes me the most. This is especially because it is such a big privilege and honor to represent more than 30.000 veterinary students from all over the world at events where all key players in veterinary medicine worldwide are present.

Organizing these meetings is one of my main tasks, together with the help of our Secretary General, James Bost. Four times a year we try to meet in person at a live meeting and in between these meetings we organize the so-called online meetings. The live meeting we had in the second half of our term took place in Colorado and the upcoming one is the pre-Congress meeting, which will be held on the day of arrival of the Congress in Indonesia. Our Secretary General and myself try to prepare these meetings as best as possible so that they can be as efficient and fruitful as possible. These meetings take place every 6-8 weeks so at every meeting there is a lot to discuss.

I feel very fortunate to have this amazing and ambitious team, which makes directing the work we do a really nice job. All Officers set their own goals and objectives in the beginning of their term, which made it easy for me to follow the developments they were implementing. I tried to keep updated about their work and ideas via individual contact, both via email and Skype calls. To keep the whole group informed about all developments and discuss them we try to have ExCo meetings regularly. For these ExCo meetings not only are the ExCo Officers are invited, but also members of the Secretariat and Trust are encouraged to attend.

Overall I consider our term as extremely fruitful and I think that both my fellow Officers and myself have achieved almost all our goals and objectives. Besides that, I tremendously enjoyed working within this team and I feel honored to have had the privilege to serve IVSA as President.

Respectfully submitted,

Pim PolakPresident 2013-2014

In the light of this multidisciplinary collaboration we approached the International Federation of Medical Students' Associations (IFMSA), which is the medical equivalent of IVSA. They represent over a million medical students in more than a hundred countries. Since the IFISO meeting of October 2013, we have been in touch with them and established a fruitful collaboration. Together we drafted a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in which we express our interest to work together and encourage medical and veterinary students to work together. One of the things outlined in the MoU is that we invite each other for our events. Because of this, I got the opportunity to attend the IFMSA General Assembly in Hammamed, Tunisia, at the beginning of March and the IFMSA Pre-World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland, in Mid-May. These are both great opportunities to raise awareness of the relationship between human, animal and environmental health on an international level.

So directing the work of ExCo and representing IVSA are two of my main tasks but next to that I also had some personal ambitions. One of theseambitions was to create more awareness of the One Health initiative, which is an initiative centered around the idea that human, animal and environmental health are interlinked. I tried to achieve this by creating the Standing Committee on One Health (SCOH), with a focus on

ndmultidisciplinary collaboration. This committee was founded at the 62 Congress in Utrecht, where Fanis Liatis was elected as the Chairman of this committee. With Fanis taking the lead and setting the direction for this committee, I tried to support him with external partnerships.

The event that I attended most recently was the Informal Forum of International Student Organizations (IFISO) Spring Meeting in Utrecht, the Netherlands. IFISO is a forum for all international student organizations, like IPSF (pharmacy), ELSA (law), ESN (erasmus) and many more. This spring the meeting was hosted by IVSA the Netherlands. At this meeting we tried to learn from each other, share best practices and establish collaborations. It is really informative and inspiring to hear how other student organizations are governed.

James BostSecretary General - Vice President

In the second half of my term, my attention has been split between my various IVSA tasks and the last of my time+ at vet school, including fairly stressful final exams, which meant I had to put IVSA work on hold for about 1-2 months while I concentrated on that. Thankfully it paid off and I passed! A significant portion of my workload has been maintaining and updating things that I created or oversaw the creation of during the first half of my term. Over the past few months I have been improving the Manuals in line with the thinking and experience of the ExCo, and over my final couple of months I shall ensure that all Manuals are updated and uploaded to the website, along with updated versions of the Constitution and Bylaws with explanatory comments, and that the next Secretary General fully understands their role within ExCo! Due to the unavailability of many ExCo members during an examination-heavy period, there was a period of almost 3 months with no ExCo meeting, but work has continued nonetheless, and a recent efficiently run but still long meeting has brought everyone up to date. Together with Pim, I have organized 2 live and 2 online meetings since my last report before Symposium, and I have continued to ensure that minutes are uploaded online in a timely fashion.

Over the course of my term, and as a result of working with the rest of ExCo and especially Pim to find the best ways of doing things, I believe that the way that ExCo, meetings and General Assemblies (GAs) are run has become more efficient and communication has improved both within ExCo and from ExCo to our Member Organizations and to the public. A lot my work has been administrative, and I have also largely undertaken the additional role of communicating with the Committee Chairs, a task which I hope will be undertaken by a dedicated ExCo member next year. Through use of the online task management program “Asana”, we have been able to keep track of many different discussions at once and therefore more easily discuss files, issues, projects, etc. in advance of meetings, making them much more efficient, and the meetings themselves have been improved through usage of the online meeting program “Adobe Connect”. I plan to assist the incoming ExCo by advising them on the use of the different task management programs out there. I aim to build on our experiences of how the ExCo coped with running the GAs in Turkey, and our trial of online attendance at GAs, to make the GAs in Indonesia an even more streamlined experience.

There have been no major problems with coordinating the Secretariat during the second half of my term. We have continued to communicate via the Facebook group and Asana, and have held a second Secretariat meeting over Skype which has resulted in discussions of the Secretariat undertaking tasks working as a team, which I hope will have fruitful results.

In this second half of my term I have been reimbursed 100% of my travel costs for attending Symposium in Turkey, and 50% of my travel costs for attending the third live ExCo meeting at SAVMA Symposium. I have also attended the 2 online ExCo meetings since Symposium, the online Secretariat meeting and the online ExCo-Trust meeting, and will attend the pre-Congress live meeting and the handover meeting at Congress, for which I will get 100% of my travel costs reimbursed.

Other tasks I have achieved have included:·Assisting Camille, the MOD, with the creation of contracts for Organizing Committees (OCs)·Creating a contract for the JWG representative ·Checking the English of others' documents·Communicating with Congress delegates regarding GAs and other important information·Drafting the GA agenda and various Bylaws amendments, and aiding others with their amendments, to try and improve IVSA·Writing an article for EAEVE about IVSA

Overall I feel I have managed to keep up with my work (being suitably prepared for my period of IVSA inactivity due to intense revision before exams), achieved my goals and, where possible, helped others achieve theirs. It's been tough balancing the amount of ExCo work with my final year at vet school, but I feel that both I and indeed the whole ExCo have had an exceptionally productive year working on behalf of IVSA.

Respectfully submitted,

James BostSecretary General and Vice-President

Airina KallmyrSecretaryAs the Secretary to Pim Polak, our President, my main tasks were to handle requests for advertisements of non-IVSA events that sometimes are directed to the President. I was happy to take on the task, but perhaps because a lot of the requests we receive are from our sponsors and therefore are handled by the Sponsorship Director, I didn't receive many requests during the last 6 months. I think it's an important point to raise that the President's tasks usually require personal attendance and communication, and therefore it's harder to assign tasks to the Secretariat. I hope the General Assembly (GA) will consider this point when we're voting on the proposed change to the Bylaws to re-organize the Secretariat. Other tasks I had was to look into flight expenses for the various Executive Committee (ExCo) officers before the ExCo determined when to have the live meeting before the Symposium to make sure IVSA's funds are spent in the most cost-effective way possible. During the Symposium I mainly helped our Development Aid Director (DAD) with the auctions, mainly setting up before the auctions and handing out the items afterwards. I also took back-up minutes and kept track of time during the GAs so that it'll be easier to plan how long the GAs take in the future and hopefully prevent us from exceeding the time schedule. I also stepped in for our Secretary General for the last two GAs as Secretary during the Symposium. During the Secretary meeting we came up with the idea that it would be good to have a few paragraphs that explains the role of the ExCo, Secretariat and Trust on our website, with references to the more detailed versions in our bylaws, so I wrote the "About us" section posted on ivsa.org. As a Secretariat project we've written short texts to promote the various positions that are elected during Congress, and I was in charge of the text about the Secretariat.

During this term I've also been a member of the Strategic Planning ndCommittee, created during the 62 Congress in Utrecht, to provide a

strategic plan for the IVSA ExCo and members for the coming years, to be voted on during GA at this Congress. I've attended most of the online meetings and contributed to the texts. I've also arranged a workshop on Strategic Planning during the Symposium in Turkey, with the help of other members of the committee and Pim, where our members could voice their opinion on several issues important for the future of IVSA.

I feel that the communication I've had with my officer has been sufficient. The frequency has varied throughout the year, but I've always felt that we have a good tone, and there's always an open door whenever I need to talk, and I feel that my opinion always has been appreciated. Also the various forms of communication used by the ExCo as a whole, either e-mail, the Facebook group or Asana (an onlineworking platform for groups/businesses) makes the work of the ExCo very transparent and inclusive. All the information is easily accessible for the Secretariat, and this ensures that Secretaries can stay updated on what other officers work on as well, which is important since the fairly new structure of our Secretariat was hoped to increase the level of cooperation with various officers, not just the one we're assigned to. We've also had our own Secretariat meeting which I thought was good, and we came up with a lot of good ideas during that meeting. We've alsowanted to do a Secretariat project where the Secretaries worked together, and that's when we came up with promoting the positions on election during the Congress.

21

Page 23: 63rd ivsa congress indonesia booklet fix

63rd IVSA Congress Indonesia 2014 | www.ivsacongress.web.id

Unfortunately we only started this project idea during late spring, and I think it's been obvious that this is the most challenging time of our term, because everyone becomes so busy with studying and exams. I know I've felt a bit guilty for not keeping up with my tasks in time during my exam period, and it also becomes harder to stay updated on the work the ExCo has done (which is an impressing amount of information to keep track of!), but unfortunately the day only has 24 hours even though exams are coming up. Another idea we discussed as a Secretariat project was promoting opportunities abroad, both studying and professional development courses for graduates, internships, etc. At the time of writing this is still very much just an idea, but I hope to get the ball rolling at least before the Congress.

I have attended 2 live meetings, during the last Congress and Symposium, ndand attended online for parts of the 2 live meeting, one ExCo online

meeting and the Secretariat meetings. Unfortunately some meetings have crashed with my travelling and out of hours work at University, so I was unable to attend the other meetings.

Respectfully submitted,

Airina Sylte KallmyrSecretary to President

My main task as President-Elect has been to prepare myself as well as possible for my upcoming term as President 2013-2014. This has included discussing the status quo and the future development of IVSA with Pim Polak, being introduced to IVSA's partners and understanding how IVSA works, especially based on the Constitution and Bylaws. One of the more specific things I did as President-Elect was to give a presentation about IVSA's latest developments to the FVE/EVERI in May 2014.

I wanted to attend as many ExCo meetings as I was able to, and also to plan the next term in terms of ExCo work and external representation.

I have had met regularly with Pim Polak to ensure proper preparation for the upcoming term. The meetings have consisted mainly of Skype meetings but we have also met face to face on a few occasions. Pim has been readily available to me, always finding time to talk and give me advice. Most of my communication has been with Pim but I have been in touch with the other ExCo members through Skype, e-mail, WhatsApp and Facebook.

I attended two ExCo Live Meetings: one in Turkey and one at the SAVMA Symposium.

Asian officers. I read the IVSA Constitution and Bylaws and found several parts which are difficult to understand for non-native English speakers like me, checked the comments were adequate and after retouching by Jimmy, I again checked everything. I revised some documents about IVSA for data of education. As Secretary to Treasurer, I looked into information about new banks for new IVSA accounts, confirmed Membership Fees again and got the information for changing of GDP factor. In addition, I organized the first World Veterinarians' Day event in South Korea with the board members of IVSA S. Korea; the event was a great success, receiving the attention of many from the public. I got information on Development Fund items for DAD. It was perfectly right and proper to my interests. I really enjoyed working with my officers. The work on lists of ISMs (Individual Supportive Members) and HLMs (Honorary Life Members) is still progressing. Because it needs the cooperation of all EOs and some officers, the SD, the MOD and the Trust,I has spent a lot of time waiting for their replies. I have been contacted by my officers around once a month and around the deadline of my duties. They kindly explained all the details of tasks I had to do and understood my situation when I had any problemsI think weekly contact or at least per 10 days contact is great. I couldn't send regards because I didn't have a chance to become intimate with some of my officers. Now I come to think of it, it was my fault. A secretary has to strive to have a warmer relationship than before. I contacted the other Secretaries through Facebook message, Skype chat or Kakao talk. I sent them inquiries about what was happening and about their welfare.I attended ExCo online meetings three times. Because they were too long to interest me, I usually read minutes and action points the latter half of my term.I attended all Secretariat online meetings. At the first online meeting in September, to be frank with you, I was quite nervous and felt awkward speaking through the microphone. I felt some Secretaries kept a strained silence or were ill at ease to speak freely like me. However, at the online meeting in March, quite a diverse set of opinions were offered. I think that the more often Secretaries have online meetings, the more opinions are shared freely.

Somin UmTreasurerA treasurer's goal is ultimately to manage finance in a precise, clearmanner. My goals are aimed at doing so, but more efficiently and systematically. I tried to improve the financial management system of the Treasurer by focusing not only on the task itself but also on the procedures and documents of the task.

For the better management of the main account called Central Fund, I built a time-bound system for expenses, including report time rules and transfer execution on a designated date, which enables the approval and transfers to take place regularly and in a timely manner.

Membership fee collection is a big part of the Treasurer's job. It took a lot of effort to encourage as many Member Organizations as possible to pay the membership fee, and to maintain the statue of active Member Organizations. I successfully collected membership fees from about 60 Member Organizations and updated their statuses, while I created or renewed several documents from membership fee records into an active Member Organizations list.

I noticed possible steep changes of membership fees with the existing calculation system; I adjusted this point by making a Bylaw amendment regarding the GDP factor of the fee calculation system, in the last Symposium. The amended calculation system will be used in the membership fees calculation in the coming fiscal year.

The budget of 2013-2014 that was approved in Congress 2013 had to be modified with additional income which occurred from a new Sponsorship agreement; I completed a renewed budget after discussion, and had it approved during the GA at Symposium. I have been running the budget with the aim of a positive balance, and every income and expense has been recorded – these will be presented asa preliminary financial statement during the GA at Congress, and approved as a financial report in the following Symposium.

another part of my task, including invoices for sponsors, expense details or financial statements.

The difficulties I encountered mainly occurred with some of the existing documents or procedures that were partially inefficient and/or unsettled, and the Treasurer manual which is insufficient in some details – I have been trying to fill those in, by bringing up discussions for new rules or systems, and renewing documents. I plan to update the manual and to focus on an effective handover, as I believe that finance is all about details.

Changing the bank structure is a handed down task from the former ExCo. The President, Pim and Secretary to SD, Isaac, gave a lot of help together on this matter, but unfortunately we could not reach a fruitful result. I think this should be one of the priority tasks for next ExCo, not Treasurer only but Treasurer especially. It is more than a simple switch of bank branches; it is a total reconstruction of financial structure, including rebuilding the account system – closing unused accounts, opening a reserve fund, and launching Paypal or another method to improve the financial management in general.

As Treasurer, my tasks are related to each and every one of the ExCo. Particularly, I worked very closely with the MOD, Camille, who has been a great help with membership fee collection. The financial part of sponsorship is where I and the SD, Hannah, work together. I also managed the financial parts of tasks of the DAD, Joe, and the PRC, Rika.

After attending the Symposium in Turkey I have attended each ExCo thmeeting; the 4 Live meeting online, and two online meetings. Even with

hardships from time to time, all the ExCo officers have been responsible and reliable, with amazing balance between tasks and studies. I also struggled to balance things right but I often found it very hard to fulfill my role as ExCo and a vet student, to be honest. However, working at an international level with a smart, fun group of people from around the globe is more than great, and it is worth some struggling. I learned a lot during my term; it has been just as rewarding as it was challenging.

Camille PoissonnierMember Organization DirectorMy goals were to improve communication between the OC and the ExCo, by helping IVSA members and answering all their questions. I also wanted to encourage the creation of new MOs, especially in Africa and South America, which are 2 continents in which IVSA is not yet much represented. I wanted to improve the image of IVSA by contacting the deans with an official letter and presentation of our association. Besides, I considered it important to motivate MOs to remain active, to organize local events and exchanges, and to stay aware of the work of ExCo. I wanted to develop the monthly EO Bulletin, by reinventing it and making it accessible to all the members of IVSA. Besides, I wanted to assist the efficient preparation of the Symposium in Turkey and the Congress in Indonesia, by regular contact. I wanted to encourage feedback from each event, so that the OCs of the next events can take that feedback into account. Organizing an EO meeting during the Congress and the Symposium which could be useful to each EO was also another of my goals. I also had a big project to ease the process to find placements for individual exchanges all over the world.Being Member Organization Director is a huge daily task, since you have a huge communication task and members need your help if they have questions about the management of their MO, the organization of group or individual exchanges, and so on. I was so glad to be able to help them all throughout the year and I worked hard to be able to answer them on time and with the most precise answer.

Since I consider every veterinary student should be able to benefit from IVSA, I tried, with the help of my 2 amazing Secretaries Ivana and Henry, to contact faculties in which we don't have an IVSA MO, and to encourage them to create an IVSA MO. South America and Africa were my biggest goals, since we don't have a lot of IVSA MOs there for the moment, and since I speak French and Spanish. Getting in contact with faculties in South America was a bit difficult, and we mainly managed to develop contacts in Brazil.During the Symposium in Turkey, I was very glad to present the application of 9 new MOs : IVSA Canada, IVSA Nanjing, China, IVSA Toulouse, France, IVSA Accra, Ghana, IVSA Lumbini, Nepal, IVSA New Zealand, IVSA Nigeria, IVSA Palestine, and IVSA West Africa, Senegal. I am very glad to announce that we already have new applications for membership which will be presented during the GA at the Congress in Indonesia. A big part of my tasks were dedicated to communicating with the OCs of the Symposium and the Congress, during the whole process of preparation, from the selection of the delegates to the itinerary and the material needed for the GAs. To ensure that every Congress and Symposium is organized in a proper way, I have created a contract with our Secretary General. This contract will now be signed between the ExCo and the OC.I have developed a new version of the EO bulletin, including a part only for the EOs and Presidents, and a pdf part which can be transmitted to all the IVSA members, and which keeps you updated every month of the latest updates and upcoming events regarding IVSA. I have started collecting information from each faculty in which we have an IVSA MO; the aim will be to create a database gathering all the opportunities of placements, internships, and courses that are available for foreign students. Furthermore, I considered the communication to IVSA members very important, and for that purpose I tried to communicate as much as possible to our members, through the EO Bulletin, the IVSA EOs and Presidents Facebook page, and through emails. I made the results from the evaluations of Congress and Symposium public, and communicated about Congresses, Symposia, events, competitions and opportunities.I am currently preparing the selection of the 10 “Best EOs”, after receiving all the amazing reports from all over the world.I would like to thank all the amazing EOs with whom I have been working the whole year, and all the IVSA members who made this year very special for me. Being the MOD has been a huge responsibility and I was very proud to be part of that team and to help improve the standards of our association. The main problem I had, especially regarding developing the database for the placements, was non-responsiveness from the responsible persons from each MO. Getting our MOs active and motivated is however our job as ExCo members, and I tried as much as possible to keep them updated of our activities, through the EO Bulletin and the Facebook page. However, I was always so surprised by the motivationof some MOs, who have organized amazing events all throughout the year, and who were always so cooperative that they definitely helped us to “go ahead”.I think I managed quite well to have my “ExCo” position at the same time as my last year in vet school, even if it is not easy to deal with every day, when you have exams and a lot of work for IVSA, but with good organization you manage to succeed in both IVSA and school ! I paid 50 euros to attend the live meeting in the Netherlands, 250 euros for my plane ticket to the Symposium in Ankara, and 1000 euros for my plane ticket to the Congress in Indonesia. We have been reimbursed 100% of our travel expenses to Congresses and Symposia, and 50% for our travel expenses to the live meetings. We had very good communication within the ExCo, using many different methods of communications, with computers, phones and regular online meetings. I was very pleased to work with that amazing team and I think with hard work we have managed to achieve a lot of our goals and to lead IVSA in a great direction. I hope the new ExCo will continue with passion, motivation and dedication! I attended all the online meetings throughout the year. I attended online the live meeting that was at the SAVMA Symposium. I attended the live meetings in Utrecht (August 2013), Utrecht (November 2013), Ankara (January 2014), and I will be present for the live meetings in Indonesia (July/August 2014).

Ivana HajzlerSecretary to MODDuring the past year I was MOD Secretary. From my officer I got several tasks which I have fulfilled. My first task was forming a new Member Organization in Canada. I have found the contact person, did all Skype meetings and completed with them all the paperwork so they were officially admitted as a new Member Organization at IVSA Symposium in Turkey. The rest of my tasks were: replying to MOD emails while the officer was away, making a list of veterinary related events to communicate to IVSA members, helping with EO and President databases, helping with databases of participants for Symposium, helping with databases for opportunities abroad… In my opinion I had no problems doing these tasks. My country was hit by devastating floods last month, and I had less time for IVSA, but my officer had understanding for everything. I am so happy I was able to work with the MOD during the past year and I hope she was satisfied with my work.Besides being part of the Secretariat, I was EO of IVSA Belgrade so I did everything related to that. I had several contacts from other EOs who knew I was part of the Secretariat regarding some tasks EOs should do (for example how to organize their Member Organization, how to organize exchanges, which paperwork is necessary for organizing exchanges – questions from the EOs of IVSA Russia, Novi Sad, Bosnia…). It was my pleasure working with them, since I've been EO for the past two years and I was more than happy to share all experience I had with people who were just starting.I had very good communication with my officer and advice whenever needed in performing the tasks. I was up to date with everything that was going on. It is more than understandable that there were periods with no contacts, when she had more things to do at her faculty and clinics, but when she was back, contact continued regularly. You can always want more contact, but this was enough for performing all tasks. From the Secretariat, I had most contact with Henry who was also MOD Secretary, and with Isaac since we did an exchange with IVSA Barcelona so we got to spent more time together.I did attend ExCo online meetings. I also attended the Secretariat online meetings and I found them very useful. Every Secretary was given the opportunity to say whether he/she had any problems, so that problems could be solved, and cooperation with officers brought to its best. I also realized the importance of sharing personal things we had to do along with IVSA, and I think that should continue in the future.Respectfully submitted,

Henry Ta-Heng HuangSecretary to MODCamille has assigned me some tasks every few weeks. We are in contact very often via Facebook. Here are my main tasks throughout this year:1. Contact with IVSA Nanjing, China people and helping them to create a new Member Organization, and keep trying to find new ways of communication in the Chinese Vet students network. 2. Building the database of the “Opportunities from different countries and faculties” in Google Drive & pdf 3. Building the list of faculties which have an IVSA MO in a Google spreadsheet4. Helping to remind & check if the new incoming EOs & Presidents are in the Global list5. Helping Camille with the Best EO competition, checking the reports.6. Setting up the Google questionnaire of feedback from the Turkey Symposium with OCs.7. Continuing to publish regularly on the Facebook group (Eos and Presidents 2013-2014) about news of the veterinary world (e.g. World Rabies Day, World Veterinary Day), or any interesting information about IVSA .

Most of my tasks were completed well enough, and I have kept renewing and editing when new letters come in or the EO/President positions change.Google drive is my best friend; my work is mainly based on using this system, spreadsheets, questionnaires, documents and pdf files. And of course connection with all the EO and Presidents is very important, using Facebook. We need to keep the EOs and Presidents motivated, so many times we have to check and care about their Member Organization's activities.I am not a super strong Computer Geek type but the basic system I know how to use, so Camille assigned me most of the data collecting and compilation task.I am capable of handling most of the work Since I am the Local EO, I have done so many things to promote and create IVSA events.IFMSA and IPFA also cooperate with us. Also, I hope to create some work to finished by the Secretaries all together during Congress. Every few weeks we contacted each other (Camille and I), and when Camille assigned some tasks to us, we did them for her. So sometimes we have been very busy, other times we were in a non-active period (not for longer than 3 weeks).Camille is an excellent Officer. She is always so kind and assigns us the jobs she thinks we can complete.I also message Ivana when I need to ask something about the EO's duty and about her method of explaining IVSA to a new Member Organization.Other Secretaries I didn't really contact about the job, because we don't really work together, but we chat a lot to share our working feeling for IVSA :)I have not attended any ExCo meetings; I am sorry about that but Camille would always bring back what she had just discussed with the ExCo, about what Jimmy and Pim think, and post in the group, so Ivana and I know the situation.I have attended all the Secretariat meetings. All the meetings were pleasant and gave me an opportunity to express my ideas; however I did not need to work with other Secretaries so I was just listening to their reports :).I struggled with using Asana at first. I hope we can have a chance to do more great things together during Congress (the Secretariat project), and let the members know what we are doing. It has been a memorable year. I love my Boss, IVSA, and my job which can encourage all EOs and Presidents; it has been really a cool experience.

B. About the working situation:

Hannah Van VelzenSponsorship DirectorDuring the second half of my term, I have continued to work on the goals I stipulated in my last report, namely maintaining IVSA's current sponsorship contracts and seeking out potential new sponsors. This included the current Hill's contract, the new contracts with Merck Animal Health and Bayer, and possible upcoming contracts with VetStage, VetPD and hopefully others by the time you read this report.Within the Hill's agreement I have helped ensure proper representation at both Symposium and Congress, set up the regular dissemination of articles and webinars, and created guidelines for communication together with the representatives from Hill's. I strongly believe that if we can maintain the improvement in communication we have established this year, we can truly reach the maximum potential of our partnership with Hill's and have our members benefit as much as possible from our collaboration. Thanks to a generous contribution from Merck Animal Health, IVSA has been able to greatly increase the number of scholarships for students wanting to do educational projects abroad, and throughout the year I have worked together with Joseph to ensure the continuity of this larger scholarship fund.

from the contestants chose Adinda Azhar to visit this year's Symposium in Barcelona, Spain. It was wonderful to be able to give her the chance tohave this great experience and I hope she had a great time. I also helped Bayer find students willing to collect ticks for their research in Malaysia and Taiwan, and am currently looking for a different student each month willing to be interviewed by Bayer for their blog.Communication with my Secretary, Isaac, has been little but very fruitful. I must admit that the lack of contact can probably be blamed on myself, as although it's been very busy combining IVSA with all the rotations within my first Masters year at University, I've managed quite well and had little need for direct help. Even so, I'm glad that Isaac still managed to find tasks together with my board member Somina and nevertheless help me out whenever I asked him to!Next to these specific ExCo tasks, I organized a World Veterinary Day project together with Frédéric through various MOs, checked and corrected articles for the Newsletters, and researched IVSA's History with Frédéric. I also had the pleasure to be present at the SAVMA Symposium and of course our own IVSA Symposium in Turkey. During the second half of my term I have received half travel reimbursement for the SAVMA Symposium and full reimbursement for the IVSA Congress, for the Adobe Formscentral account and for travel to Germany to sign the Bayer contract, bringing my total reimbursements for the second half of term to around €2050 (exact amount not yet calculated at the time of writing).I have attended all Skype and Live Meetings of the ExCo. As the year progressed I found the meetings quite taxing, as we often had lots to discuss and not enough time. The use of Asana as a means of keeping track of each other's tasks and progression, and also as a place to pre-discuss things definitely helped, but it would have been even more useful I think if we'd all had time to really regularly use it. Personally, I've had regular contact with the Trust and I thought the two ExCo-Trust meetings we had this year were very beneficial to our ExCo as a whole.Within my work for IVSA I have sometimes struggled, both on a professional and personal level. I'm not a person who feels very comfortable confronting people with my own frustrations and that has sometimes therefore led to me building up maybe more frustration than necessary. I think I've learned a lot about myself and the difficulties of working with an international team throughout the year, and even though the going was tough sometimes, I am glad I could be part of this ExCo and that I managed to achieve most of the goals I set out to.Respectfully submittedHannah van VelzenSponsorship Director

With the help of Bayer, I organized the CVBD Symposium Contest and

information about different banks in which IVSA could create a new account. I think I fulfilled my tasks in the best way possible. I gave the information I was able to collect to the Treasurer so that she could take care of it. At first, I thought it was a good idea being me the assigned person to carry out this task. However, as a Secretariat member, there were some things I could not do because I was not the one in charge of IVSA's bank account; therefore it was difficult to get access to some information from the different banks we were interested in.

Although it was not a Secretary's task, I checked IVSA's financial report that was presented during the last Symposium in Turkey, which really helped me to understand some of the IVSA Treasurer's tasks.

I also had an online meeting with the Sponsorship Director in which we talked about the different sponsors IVSA could be interested in. We came across the idea of trying to get some kind of sponsor such as an airline company, hence I asked about more information. This is an ongoing project and I hope we can talk it out and make some decisions on it in Indonesia or during our next meeting.

Finally, during the following weeks I expect to work with the Treasurer on next year's budget and some other matters that need to be presented or discussed at the next GA this summer.

At the beginning, I was assigned by the Treasurer the task of looking for

I think communication went well in general. At the beginning it was a little bit chaotic receiving so many emails every day. But ever since we have been using Asana I think everything is more organized so it has been really useful. I think it would be better if each Secretary could have his own Asana account because I believe the communication would be even easier.

Furthermore, communication with the officers went well too. Perhaps it would have been interesting if the Treasurer, the SD and I had arranged a meeting via Skype. But I completely understand that we are all very busy and that sometimes it can be hard to organize it.

I attended some of the ExCo online meetings and the Secretariat online meetings. I think the meetings are a good idea for sharing thoughts but sometimes it becomes difficult to communicate with people without seeing them, resulting in less feedback. Nevertheless, I still find them important and necessary.

Theofanis LiatisVeterinary Public Health DirectorHi all IVSians throughout the world,My name is Theofanis Liatis, I am in my final year at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece and am the former Vice-President of IVSA Thessaloniki. The academic year 2013/2014 I was the first Chairman of IVSA Standing Committee on One Health (SCOH), as well as a member of the IVSA Executive Committee with the role of Veterinary Public Health Director.

ndSCOH was founded in the 62 IVSA Congress in the Netherlands in August 2014. As a newborn committee, the construction of the basic trunk of the committee as well as the function and the project designing of the committee was a difficult job. However, with great efforts, willingness, dreams, imagination, trust and collaboration, we created a 10-membered committee from four continents and started a great chain of projects. After designing the first necessary elements of a proper committee such as emails, social media pages (Facebook, LinkedIn), online library (Issuu), internal communication (Facebook group, emailing) etc., we started a number of projects by ourselves, as well as in collaboration with the IVSA ExCo and other public health related associations (Global Alliance for Rabies Control (GARC), International Federation of Medical Students' Associations (IFMSA), International Pharmaceutical Students' Federation (IPSF), Stop TB Partnership).SCOH organized two awareness campaigns this year:

th·IVSA Campaign on World Rabies Day (28 September 2013): 12 Member Organizations worldwide participated in this. This event was held under the support and advice of GARC and an Event Guide was published.

th·IVSA Stop TB Campaign (24 March 2014): 11 Member Organizations worldwide participated in this. This event was held under an official partnership with STOP TB. The object of this campaign was to inform people about Bovine TB and the vet's role. An Event Guide and an informative leaflet were published.·Joint GARC/IFMSA/IVSA “The One Health Challenge” (upcoming): a joint competition of joint campaigns of vets and doctors for Rabies AwarenessWe established permanent projects such as:·Local Veterinary Public Health Network: we proposed the establishment of the Local Veterinary Public Health Officers (LoVPHOs) in every local board. So far, we have 22 enrolled LoVPHOs from 22 Member Organizations. ·Veterinary Public Health Journal (VPHJ): we founded the VPHJ, which is a students' journal within the IVSA Newsletter related to public/one health issues and interdisciplinary collaboration. So far we have

st nd published the 1 and the 2 issue. You can find our library and

We organized or participated in events, such as:·One Health Workshop: Scenario & Quiz Stimulation Game – Karditsa / Greece Session: This is a workshop/game what was organized by SCOH in collaboration with LoPVHOs of Thessaly and Thessaloniki

nd during the 2 Greek Veterinary Students' Congress in Greece (May 2014). The participants were 30 and they were excited by this game. Our plan is to train LoVPHOs and organize the next sessions worldwide·World Healthcare Students' Symposium (WHSS): the first participation of IVSA ever in WHSS will be in the next WHSS 2015, which is organized by public health related students' associations and aims to promote One Health and Healthcare. Within this project, we published an open call for the person who would represent IVSA in the Joint Working Group and after evaluation, Rachel Dalton from IVSA UK & Ireland was selected and now she is representing us to this collaboration.Official and unofficial collaborations: ·IFMSA (official): signed a MoU·IPSF (unofficial): designed a project plan for possible joint sectors of collaboration, started discussion and wrote articles for one another's journals·GARC (unofficial); a whole year discussion and designing of the One Health Challenge·Stop TB Partnership (official): became an official partner in order to promote the IVSA Stop TB Campaign

Finally, I would like to express that even though I had a difficult program as I was in my final year and I also had problems with my health, which were obstacles to being present in a lot of ExCo meetings and Symposia/Congresses, the experience of this position was exquisite!I LOVED THE…. communication with people I didn't know before / …when I saw the poster of my design for a campaign to be printed on a great banner in different countries far away from Greece / …the rapid flourishing of One Health in veterinary schools worldwide / …the willingness of Member Organizations to participate in every project / …the communication with other sciences' students / …the new friends that I made / …the voluntary work for making the vet students' society better.I would like to thank personally IVSA members as I was elected without being present in the Netherlands Congress last summer, as well as IVSA President Pim Polak, who trusted and supported me to a great level evenif he didn't know me that well. Lastly, I would like to thank the whole IVSA board, but especially IVSA ExCo with whom I shared a lot of time, problems, questions and laughs this year!

It was a great life experience! Respectfully,

Retorika GalunggungPublic Relations CoordinatorMy goals for this year were to raise public awareness of the existence and benefits of IVSA and build a better image of IVSA through IVSA publications and social media, and also to create a better IT system and website that support the performance of IVSA locally and globally.

Up until now, I have released several online IVSA newsletters and the printed IVS winter journal, made new IVSA uniforms, business cards, general brochures, IVSA pins, certificates, and some changes on the old IVSA website and Facebook page hoping they will look more appealing, communicative and informative. The IVSA PRC Questionnaire also has been sent out to IVSA members as a means to evaluate our performance during this year.

Right now my Secretary and I are still working on designing the IVSA-Hill's Banner, DF brochure, spring and summer IVSA newsletters and

rdIVS summer journal which will be printed out for the 63 IVSA Congress in Indonesia. Reconstructing the new IVSA website (design and system), making a new format for an IVSA promotional package which includes an IVSA powerpoint and IVSA movie, and re-activating the IVSA Global twitter account and some other useful social media that have been unused for a long time because of missing log in data have also become some of our big projects for this year. I hope we can finish everything before the Congress.

more than last year (around €1800-2000). But with the help of my Secretary and some IVSA friends, we managed to reduce one-third of the total budget required. All the money was allocated to two editions of the IVS journal, the uniforms, business cards, brochures, 500 IVSA pins, three banners, all web charges, certificates and the website reconstruction. I attended every online meeting, two live meetings online and two live

ndmeetings in person during the 62 IVSA congress in the Netherlands and ndthe 62 IVSA Symposium in Turkey. I also got reimbursed as much as I

nd rdneeded to attend the 62 IVSA Symposium in Turkey and 63 IVSA Congress in Indonesia (which is my own country so I do not spend a lot of money on travel expenses).

So far, there are no significant difficulties that I experienced during my term. Well, it does take a lot of time to manage websites, IVSA social media and also finalize many project designs. I have to spend at least an hour every day to just check the email and web system and update information on the website and other social media. And use the whole weekend to do the designs. Sometimes I find it difficult to balance it with studying, work and personal life. But I have enjoyed it very much. The communication within IVSA governing and advisory body is indeed very important and useful for me. I got a lot of great advice and help from the two Trustees who had performed my role last year, Sunghyun Hong and Manel Millanes, and my Secretary, Ayesha Azlan. We communicate with each other a lot, so we are like brothers and sisters. I want to use this opportunity to especially thank them for all their support, advice and help throughout the year, and also all fellow ExCo Officers, Trustees, and Secretaries. All the things that I have achieved could not have been done without help and support from them. Although it was only for a short period of time, it was such a great experience to work and learn together with this lovely family.

Last but not least, I want to thank IVSA members all over the world who have faithfully followed all updates of IVSA on the website and Facebook. Every Facebook likes from you means a lot for me. And to those who have submitted their article for the IVSA newsletter! The IVSA newsletter would not have been possible without your help :)

projects like Water Day, Tuberculosis Day, Rabies Day, etc., then share them on all social media as much as possible to promote and encourage IVSA members around the world to join the projects. Also, I did some presentations about the projects to IVSA Indonesia members. I have had really good communication with Fanis since he has often asked my opinion about the projects and had regular meetings with me to give some tasks to me. We do have Facebook private messages and Skype meetings, so it's quite a lot. I'm sure that I'm quite lucky as I've also been Secretary to DAD and helped Joe with the Development Fund and Scholarship Fund. I did some tasks such as promoting MAH through Facebook, Twitter, and sharing it to all IVSA Member Organizations' Facebook groups. I also did presentations about MAH in Indonesia to promote and give more explanation about it. Then, with Ayesha and Kevin, we had a DAD Secretary meeting to select winners for the IVSA-MAH scholarship and travel grant program then send them to Joe, giving reasons why we chose them. Joe also assigned to me the responsibility of helping those who got scholarship money for an internship in Indonesia and the Congress. I found places that might be good for doing internships in Indonesia and got in touch with them and arranged everything for Micael, Dejen and Abid who won the scholarship money. For the auctions, I helped to collect some items for the auction at the Congress in Indonesia, and also shared updates and news about the Congress applications since Joe needed it for DF things and so on. I also have good communication with Joe and the other DAD Secretaries as well since we have a WhatsApp group to share everything, do Skype meetings and I have to send a report to Joe twice a month so Joe knows what progress I'm making.

As Secretary to VPHD, I helped Fanis to think of ideas about some SCOH

With Ayesha and Kevin, we have such a really really good communication– we help each other and discuss everything, we usuallyhave a DAD Secretaries meeting before we have a meeting with Joe to discuss the agenda and sometimes when one of us doesn't understand, we can help each other and can remind each other about the tasks Joe gave us.While being a Secretary, I attended ExCo online meetings a couple of times. There was always lots on the agenda and all the ExCo do sounds like really hard work and I'm impressed with them. It seemed so difficult

stto me the 1 time but time flies so fast so I can get used to that. I attended the Secretariat online meeting as well and it was great. It didn't take a long time and it worked; we had the opportunity to share and discuss about the progress we've made and ask about what we don't know and share ideas. So I think the Secretariat online meeting was really cool :).I wish the best for IVSA in future since I got some positive things and learned a lot from IVSA. I hope IVSA can be more spread out in all parts of the world.

My tasks revolved around our seasonal newsletters. I was to collect the articles and photos from IVSA members to be included in all of the newsletters. Other than that, I was also in charge of aiding the PRC in managing our IVSA global official Facebook page. I also took part in brainstorming and generating questions for our questionnaire regarding the Facebook page. I was also in charge of designing the banners for Hills-IVSA.

Tasks from DAD:

My tasks began with emailing 20 companies in my country as we were searching for sponsorships. Then, I was given the task to spread the word on a local level about the MAH-IVSA Scholarship & Travel Grant Program, and so the IVSA Malaysia Committee presented our exchanges and presented a whole segment on the program. As well as that, the 3 secretaries under DAD were to go through all the applicants for the program, and create a shortlist of excellent applicants.

Communication:

I contacted both the DAD and PRC through WhatsApp, and I thought it was quite efficient as my questions usually needed quick replies. I found this really simplified a lot of my given tasks. My ExCo counterparts replied to me as soon as they could, and it was more than I could ask for.

Meetings:

I did not attend ExCo live/online meetings, but I did attend Secretariat meetings. I thought they motivated me to better myself in terms of deadlines, and broadened my understanding of the actual role of the Secretariat.

Respectfully submitted,

Ayesha Shafinaz Azlan,Secretary to PRC and DAD

Joseph LuntDevelopment Aid DirectorI have now been involved in IVSA on a local level since January 2012 and went to the Congress in Norway in summer 2012, since getting the IVSA bug. I have also attended both the Congress in the Netherlands, where I was voted to be the Development Aid Director (DAD) and then attended both the Symposium in Turkey and SAVMA in Colorado in this capacity. Thus far I have managed to also attend all of the live meetings including a separate one in the Netherlands in October to minimize the costs incurred to IVSA, as two board members are based there. I also attended all of the Skype meetings for the whole time other than one which I couldn't attend all of due to internet issues. This last year I have had the great honor of serving the IVSA's Development Fund and also other projects to help those less fortunate in other countries whether they are unfortunate due to the country they live in or on an individual basis. In the past year I have managed to finish the consignment of more than 10 tons of veterinary books and resources shipped to Africa, kindly started by my predecessor. I also have sent 2 custom built anesthetic machines to Uganda. We are currently in the process of building new teaching and animal housing facilities in the hurricane-torn Philippines. We also granted money to a further school in the Philippines which has yet to decide where the money would be best spent. We have also helped a less fortunate Member Organization to gain access to IT resources. My team also administered the IVSA-MAH Scholarship & travel grant alongside the MSD Scholarship with now more than 20 successful candidates using this money to visit facilities and countries that they would never have dreamed of otherwise. The main problem I encountered was that a whole team of very motivated intelligent people all with amazing leadership skills do often clash. But I think this has given us such a great insight on how to work with people for ultimately a greater result. My only other problem was volume of communicationsome days I would receive 30 emails, 5 Facebook messages, a couple of texts and a phone call, while on a clinical placement and studying for an exam. The greatest challenge was not to give up revising and studying to make IVSA my full time job. In my term I will probably be reimbursed around three thousand euros, though I will have spent more than that out of my own pocket. This year for the Development Fund I have raised around eight thousand euros, with hopefully a much greater total in Indonesia where you sit now reading me blabber on. So if you got this far I thank you for your attention and wish that you find the amazing itinerary much more exciting than me self-advertising.

Development Funds to my country and others, especially low income countries, process the Scholarship and Development Fund, and sort the candidates. Beside that, I helped to arrange silent and live auctions during the Congress including the room and the personal announcement. I also helped the PRC to design/organize ExCo clothes, the website, and the printing process. I fulfilled my jobs and for me it was a good idea to assign the tasks to me since I'm happy if I can help. But, I need more guidance from the ExCo to complete my job so it could be perfect work. Actually I have a mission for IVSA. I wanted to develop more members for IVSA so we could get more members especially from low capital countries around my country and I hope they can feel IVSA experiences especially with the Scholarship Fund and Development Fund. But I have a difficulty because I couldn't get more members due to the lack of contact people. However, I keep promoting IVSA to other countries (who aren't yet members) during a veterinary medicine event in my country. Twice each month I get contact with my officer, but it depends on the need; sometimes during the closing period of Scholarship Fund and Development Fund we communicate every day.

As DAD Secretary, I helped the DAD to promote the Scholarship and

It happened also when I help for PRC we communicate almost every day during the printing process, souvenir, clothes, and web design. But, I guess I needed more time getting in contact with my ExCo members because sometimes I had difficulty managing my ExCo work and had some questions about my job. I hope that I can get more contact with my ExCo members and can be guided more because of the limits of my ability. But in the end, our communication improved well. It is getting better then when we first worked together. My contacts with other Secretaries were really good also. They helped me to discuss some projects and tasks during my duties as a Secretary. Commonly we also have personal Secretary meetings to discuss about our jobs and duties, so we will able to get better understanding about working in IVSA. I just missed the last ExCo online meeting and I attended almost all online meetings but I couldn't join the live meetings. I also attended a Secretariat meeting. It was a really good meeting. It helped me to get a better understanding of work in IVSA, and improved my teamwork.

Frederic LohrTrusteeAs this term was the first term with an actual Trust in place, the first half of the Trust's term consisted mostly of a “self-finding” period, during which we tried to assign tasks between the four of us and help the incoming ExCo with arising matters and issues.

Due to the Trust Mailing list, communication among the Trustees worked really well and we were able to set up several Skype Meetings, mostly before the ExCo Meetings, to discuss matters at hand and the agenda of the ExCo Meeting. Initially, the communication with the ExCo and the Secretariat proved to be a bit difficult, but became better during the second half of the term.

My specific tasks within the Trust were:

-The history of IVSA:Together with Hannah van Velzen, I was able to clarify the origin of IVSA, which was founded in 1953 in Gießen, Germany, instead of 1951 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Furthermore we collected old documents from all over the world and started digitalizing them. Due to the overwhelming amount of documents, this task is still ongoing and it will still take a while until every relevant document is scanned and made available online.Additionally, Hannah and I initiated talks with the University museum of Utrecht to host the archive of IVSA, so that we can store the original documents and memorabilia that cannot be digitalized right now.

-IVSA AlumniThe idea for an IVSA Alumni network was born several years ago and during my term as President last year, Inés and I decided to bring it into existence this term, if we were elected into the Trust. With Inés taking the lead in this matter this year, I helped with advertising the new group, managing the members' list and bringing an alumni workshop to the Congress in Indonesia, where we officially want to launch the IVSA Alumni group. With all the work being done this year, it would be great to stay involved with this group to help bring it forward, as I have been in touch with a lot of former members due to my history activities.

-Trust representative at several ExCo MeetingsDuring each ExCo Meeting, the Trust nominated one person to represent the Trust at those meetings, especially when the other Trustees could not participate for the full time. I fulfilled that role during the majority of the ExCo Meetings, as I could attend all but two for the full time.

Outside of those specific Trust tasks, I helped several officers with their tasks. For Sponsorship Director Hannah van Velzen, I initiated contact with MSD, which ultimately resulted in the MAH-IVSA Scholarship and Travel Grant Program for travel scholarships, as well as with Bayer Animal Health, which signed a sponsorship contract later on.Within the terms of this agreement I attended the “Canine Vector-Borne Disease Web-Conference” in Barcelona, to represent IVSA.

rdFurthermore, I attended the “3 World Conference on Veterinary Education and Statutory Bodies” in Foz do Iguacu, Brazil, as well as

ndthe 82 General Session of the OIE, where President Pim Polak and I signed the Memorandum of Understanding between IVSA and OIE, which was initiated last year by Camille Poissonnier and me.

rdAdditionally, I was sent to represent IVSA at the 3 Animal Welfare Indicators Conference (AWIN) in Prague and put IVSA in contact with the WSAVA Foundation and the Directorate General for Health and Consumers of the European Commission, which will hopefully develop into fruitful partnerships in the future.Besides attending those meetings, I introduced IVSA to some tools we use in the German Veterinary Students Association, BVVD, to improve the communication between the different bodies within IVSA and to make it easier to follow each other's tasks. These tools, namely Asana and Adobe Connect, are now among the core communication tools thanks to James Bost, who made them usable in the first place.Being a member of the IVSA Strategic Planning Committee, I also worked on several passages of the Strategic Plan and on the application for UN consultative status.

As one of the Trust's main tasks is the supervision of the ExCo, we tried our best to keep track of all the activities within the ExCo and the Secretariat to evaluate the situation and activities. This was not an easy task to perform in the beginning, as the internal communication proved to be a bit difficult and on a need-to-know basis. After us addressing this issue during the first couple of meetings, the communication did indeed improve to a level where I didn't experience a major lack of information, even though there is still space for improvement. The improvement I noticed is not just related to the introduction of new forms of communication, but mostly through the honest effort of all people involved to make this term a very productive and successful one. In particular, the structure of the meetings and the effort with which each person fulfilled her/his tasks was amazing and inspiring to see and I was happy to be part of the team. The only thing were I still see a lot of work to do, and this was an issue not just this year but is, in my opinion, a more general problem, is the fact that all governing bodies should try more to work together and honor each other's opinions. There is a good sense in having a clear leadership structure with the ExCo as the leading entity, but both Secretariat and Trust can provide a valuable insight into issues at hand and should therefore be more involved, both actively and passively.

All in all, I believe this year's team did an amazing job in setting up new working standards and partnerships as well as improving the member benefits and the financial security of the association.Thank you very much to all of you for listening to my – sometimes – overly long monologues during the meetings and for dedicating your time to this association! It's not easy to find such an amazing bunch of people and the next IVSA team will have big shoes to fill, though I have all confidence that the next team will do so! Good luck next year!

IVSA Tunisia and then I was the last IVSA CEO (similar to current MOD) in 2012-2013. I'm glad to be a Trustee and a core member of Standing Committee on One Health (SCOH) this year to contribute more to the development of my lovely association.I enjoyed working with my friends Manel, Fred and Sung as a Trust team. My main mission for this year was to create the IVSA Alumni network and help to organize the first IVSA Alumni meeting in Indonesia. We are lucky to have an awesome OC in Indonesia to help us with organizing this meeting. Now, keep calm and join IVSA after graduating ;)As a Trust team, our first task is to supervise the work of the ExCo to help them achieve their goals. From the end of my term last year, I tried to have a good handover meeting with IVSA MOD and I continue to help her as much as I can to solve any problem concerning MOs. I was always ready to listen to Officers, Secretaries and Trustees and try to help them work in a friendly atmosphere to advance our association. I believe that being a Trustee makes me feel that I have a responsibility to make the voice of our members heard not only during GAs but also during ExCo meetings; that's why I shared information and discussed with IVSA members from different MOs before attending meetings.(being an IVSA Trustee makes me feel also, that I am now an old person)I was present in almost every ExCo/ExCo-Trust meeting online but I couldn't attend the Symposium and the Congress, unfortunately. I'll do my best to attend the alumni session via Skype. As a member of SCOH, I organized the “Fight Against Tuberculosis

thCampaign” on 24 March 2014 and I tried to bring a good energy to this team. It wasn't easy to have meetings will all members in this committee because we are from different continents and it's hard to find a suitable time with everyone and also I didn't like to see the same people making a lot of effort to make this committee successful in its first year, but some members weren't really motivated as they promised in the beginning. This year, we used many tools of communication which is good but sometimes it makes me confused to follow all of them but I always try to check monthly that I'm following IVSA projects and news. Working for IVSA is always a pleasure for me. Once IVSA, always IVSA .

IVSA-Barcelona for the first time in 2009. After my whole time taking positions in IVSA, I didn't want to leave all the great things related to this association and I decided to run for the Trust position to keep trying make this family bigger and better.During this year mainly I tried to keep in touch with the ExCo and assist or give advice when possible. With the other Trust members we had some meetings to discuss how the new ExCo was managing IVSA and how could we improve or work in other fields. This means for me mainly working on the development of the Alumni Association. I closely kept in touch with Retorika Galunggung, who was elected as PRC (my last position), and helped her in whatever she needed. Not everything went as smoothly as it could seem. I want to share some problems I had in order to prevent future Trustees from having them. First of all, our positions were completely new and that made me get lost at some points; keeping up communication and asking if you have any doubts is the key. Also in some situations none of us knew how to act or which tools we could use to do our work. Secondly, I graduated during the first part of my term and I didn't know what I was going to do or where I was going to be from the end of December to the Congress. That was a little tricky because I planned some internships abroad and I was not able to access to internet properly for nearly 4 month. I think is not really necessary to tell you how difficult it is to be part of the Trust without internet connection.

My name is Manel and I am from Barcelona (Spain), where I joined

I would encourage anyone from previous ExCos to run for Trust, but I would like you to make sure that you know what you are going to do during your next year and that you will have enough time to work on it.

Manel MillanesIVSA Trust

Sunghyun HongTrustee·As Trustee, I have been attending meetings online, providing advice and opinions for ongoing discussions. I've also been working with the other Trustees to come up with official opinions and advice on meeting agendas and also any situations arising for the ExCo. Individually I wrote and documented the “IVSA governance manual”, from writing the draft then getting feedback and adding in the modifications. James Bost helped me make it into a wiki friendly form and uploaded it on the IVSA wiki. I also created the flow chart for the recent ExCo position changes that are inserted in the “History document” that Frédéric Lohr drafted. Recently I just began working on the “Trust manual”.oAs immediate past ITO, I helped build the new PRC manual which included all the IT tasks and methods, along with all the website management resources. I also made sure the handover was thorough and helped the current PRC with continuing support whenever needed.

·Communication:oWith ExCo and Secretariat, I feel it was pretty often. Not always directly about work but even small talk and frequent personal messages helped in efficient communication. SNS and texting applications are a great advantage of our generation.oWithin the Trust, we had multiple meetings and frequent personal chats also through SNS and texting applications and occasionally Skype. Most of the time everyone replied quickly concerning any IVSA matters.

·Meetings:oI attended all of the Trust, ExCo-Trust and ExCo online meetings except

th thfor the period of 13 March – 10 Arpil while I had my national mandatory basic military training and had no access to a computer. At the meetings where I needed to represent myself or the Trust I usually stayed until the end but at a couple of regular ExCo meetings when another Trust member was representing the Trust I had to be dismissed early due to work conditions.oI couldn't attend any live meetings in person.
