Saints Peter and Paul New Mass Schedule (effective Sunday, July 11th)

FEAST OF FAITH: Little Mysteries Two small rites—or, as one liturgist has called them, “little mysteries”—accompany the preparation of the gifts. The priest or deacon takes a small cruet of water from the server and adds a drop of water to the wine. Then, after the elevation of the chalice (and the incensation, if incense is used), the priest washes his hands. Both of these actions were at first practical, matter-of-fact realities: in the ancient world the wine was usually quite thick, and was generally mixed with water before it was drunk. And in the early church, when the faithful brought forward a great variety of gifts at this time, there was a definite need for the presider to wash his hands! But now these rites serve a purely symbolic function. The mingling of the water and wine is accom-panied by a prayer that speaks of the wonderful exchange of the Mass, the mingling of Christ’s divinity and our humanity. And as the priest washes his hands, he prays words of supplication from Psalm 51, acknowledging his own sinfulness in the pres-ence of the assembly before he dares to approach the altar for this most sacred action. —Corinna Laughlin, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

After last year’s uncertainty and mostly remote learning, Religious Education classes for the 2021/2022 school year are lling up with students, and we are thrilled to welcome the children back in person. Now we need adult volunteers to

teach and assist! The following opportunities are available: TUESDAY AFTERNOONS 4:15-5:30PM Catechists needed for Grade 1, Grade 3, Grade 5, and Grade 6 Assistants needed for Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5, and Grade 6 WEDNESDAY AFTERNOONS 4:15–5:30PM Catechists needed for Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 5, and Grade 6 Assistants needed for Grade 1, Grade 2, and Grade 6 WEDNESDAY EVENINGS 6:15-7:30PM Catechist needed for Grade 2 Assistants needed for Grade 4 WEDNESDAY NIGHT 7:15–8:30PM Catechists needed for Con rmation 1 and Con rmation 2 Assistants needed for Con rmation 2 WHAT DOES BEING A CATECHIST OR ASSISTANT INVOLVE? Do you have a deep love of Christ, the Church and your faith? Consider being a catechist! You don’t need to know every detail of your faith; part of being a catechist involves openness to learning as you teach. Our classes follow the public school calendar and meet weekly from mid-September through April. You will receive a schedule for the year, which will help you plan when to teach which lesson. You will also receive the catechist’s version of the textbook, which suggests activities and gives tips on how to guide your class through the mate-rial. In turn, we make the commitment to support you in your ministry. The role of a catechist assistant is to offer classroom management support to the catechist. The assistant will often help work with a child who needs extra assistance or help the catechist in a classroom activity. The assistant typically does not help prepare lessons unless the catechists and the assistant make some prior arrangement for him/her to do so. Please contact the Religious Education of ce at 630-357-2436 or email [email protected] for more information.

St. Augustine declared, “Certainly, if there are good sheep there are also good shepherds; good sheep give rise to good shepherds.” We can be the good sheep and make an enormous difference in our parish by intensely praying for our priests as the English martyr St. John Fisher prayed, “for strong and mighty pillars that may suffer and endure great labors” for the Church.

Consider joining the Saints Peter and Paul ministry Hands in Prayer for Our Parish Priests which is dedicated to praying fervently for the priests of our parish. Members of Hands in Prayer make a yearlong commitment to spend an hour in prayer each week, exclusively for the priests of our parish. Ideally, this time of prayer should be offered on the same day of the week, each week, and before the Blessed Sacrament, if possible. Members will receive a free copy of Praying for Our Priests: A Guide to Praying for the Priesthood in Union with Mary, Queen of the Clergy by Msgr. Peter Dunne to aid them in their Holy Hour. “Hands in Prayer” members fill out a card each week (found in the St. Francis Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Chapel) which is delivered to our priests to encourage them in their ministry.

“In strengthening the priest, you strengthen the whole Church

Strengthen the priest and you strengthen the whole foundation, you strengthen everything in the Church.” ~ Fr. Gerald Fitzgerald. S.P.

To sign up for a weekly commitment or if you have questions, please contact Deacon Joe Verdico at 630-718-2155 or [email protected].

Loaves & Fishes food pantry will pick up donations the third weekend of every month. July 17th/18th will be the next collection. Please place your donations at the front of the Church by the rail in front of Mary. In the Ministry Center, donations can be dropped off outside the entrance to the Holy Family Chapel on the right-hand side. Thank you for helping those in need.

DID YOU KNOW…? Every Tuesday at 2:00pm parishioners, clergy from our parish and a few parishioners from other parishes pray a rosary and a Divine Mercy Chaplet at Planned Parenthood for approximately a half an hour witnessing for life. This witness began with the inception of Planned Parenthood in Aurora and occurs every week no matter what the weather. This is an invitation for more parishioners to join us during these summer months and for the rest of the year as well. Put your faith in action. It will feel good and you will be witnessing for life. For more information, contact Deacon Joe.

The Knights of Columbus is a Catholic Men’s Fraternal Service Organization founded by Father McGivney. All of the good works we do are informed by our four core principles: Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism. The Knights also have an insurance program that has a top notch rating. For more information, please contact our Grand Knight, Larry Pociask, at 630-303-6137 or our Membership Director, Nick Thompson, at 815-871-4218. The Kaycee Cub Hall is available for parties and meet-ings. The Naperville Knights of Columbus meets there on the first Tuesday every month. Contact Al Knoeck at 630-369-2992 for more information. Our aluminum can collection has been a great success. It has provided us the funding we need to support our priests and seminarians. Please continue to drop off your aluminum cans next to the trailer behind the Kaycee Club Hall. The Knights of Columbus is always seeking new members to join our organization. However, the outbreak of coronavirus has presented the Knights with new challenges to our membership recruitment. As a result, the Supreme Council has made it possible for new members to join our ranks via an online exemplification. The First (Charity); the Second (Unity); and the Third (Fraternity) Degrees are now available online, but only on certain days and times. If you have any interest in joining, you can go to the Knights of Columbus website at KofC.org for more information or contact our Membership Director, Nick Thompson, at 815-871-4218.

TRANSITIONAL HOUSING MINISTRY

MENTORS NEEDED!

We are currently looking for mentors to support a new family entering our program. Each of our families is supported by three mentors, with at least one experienced in the program; which means that new mentors do not need any specific skills or background. Training is also available through Bridge Communities of Glen Ellyn. Mentoring is a two-year commitment, but meetings with clients are typically just one hour per week, and are scheduled at the convenience of the mentors and the client (typically in the early evening so that clients can work). Because there are three mentors, it is not a problem if a mentor misses an occasional meeting. If you might be interested in helping single mothers with young children in need, we desperately need your help to provide housing and support for another homeless DuPage County family. Please consider mentoring in our program…not only do the families benefit, but the men-tors themselves do as well. If you would like to consider mentoring, or would simply like more information regarding the Transitional Housing Ministry, please contact Tom Dorn at (630) 270-7303 or [email protected]. Thank you for your continued pray-ers and financial support for those families currently housed in our apartments.

Saint Vincent de Paul

Frederic Ozanam wrote: “Help then becomes honorable, because it may become mutual, because every man who gives a kind word, a good advice, a consolation today, may tomorrow stand himself in need of a kind word, an advice, or a consolation; because the hand that you clasp clasps yours in return; because that indigent family whom you love loves you in return, and will have largely acquit-ted themselves toward you when the old man, the mother, the little children shall have prayed for you.” (Ramson, Praying with Frederic, p. 93)

Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of Saint Vincent

de Paul, a Catholic lay organization, leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually by

offering person-to-person service to those who are needy and suffering in the tradition of its founder,

Blessed Frederic Ozanam, and its patron, Saint Vincent de Paul. Please call 630-718-2127 to

learn more or to request assistance.

COMMUNION TO THE HOMEBOUND

Homebound visits will be weekly

starting August 1st.

One of the most rewarding and beautiful ministries at Saints Peter and Paul is the Homebound Communion Ministry. Precautions and guidelines have been put in place to protect our homebound and our extraordinary ministers. If you or a loved one find it difficult to get to Mass either temporarily or on a regular basis due to health issues or disabilities, our Homebound Communion Ministry may be the way to receive Jesus in the Eucharist. If this situation describes you or a loved one, please contact Deacon Joe for more information.
