Dorothy M. Bentley Dorothy M. Bentley, age 86, of Hamburg, New York died on Wednesday, June 24, 2015. She was the daughter of the late Paul and Cecilia Smith. She was born September 12, 1928 in Buffalo, New York. Dorothy will be remem-bered for having a love for life and scotch. She especial-ly enjoyed entertaining and hosting elaborate dinner parties. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Eden, New York. Dorothy started her ca-reer as the manager of the Café Rouge for 15 years at the Hotel Statler in Buffalo, NY. She was transferred to Denver, Colorado where she met her future husband, Fe-lix Bentley. They later mar-ried in England. Together their careers took them to many different countries, eventually retiring and set-tling in Australia. After the death of her husband in 2000, Dorothy moved back home to Hamburg, New York to be with family. She was the loving sister of Ronald E. (late Anita) Smith, Kenneth C. (Louise) Smith, late Quentin P. and Richard J. Smith and is sur-vived by several nieces and nephews. Family will receive friends at Immaculate Conception Church of Eden on Monday, June 29, 2015 at 5:00PM im-mediately followed by a Fu-neral Mass at 6:00PM. All are invited to attend a din-ner reception following the mass to celebrate the life of Dorothy. Flowers grate-fully declined. Eden United Methodist Church Welcomes their new Pastor and his Wife

The congregation of the Eden United Methodist Church would like to introduce their new pastor and his wife to the Eden community. Pastor Alan Howe will be coming on as pastor to the Eden flock with his wife Louise. The congregation would like to extend our warmest thanks to Pastor Helen Hadley who is retiring and will be moving to the Canandaigua area to be closer to family. Pas-tor Helen has been with the EUMC for 6 years and the congregation wishes her all the best in her retirement.

Pastor Howe comes to us from the United Methodist Church in Rome, New York and has strong ties to this side of the state having graduated from Dunkirk High School and doing his undergraduate studies at SUNY Fredo-nia. His mother, also named Louise Howe, still lives in Dunkirk. He has a strong commitment to mission work that includes starting a Seminary called Nexus Seminary in Uganda in 2006. He has been working with this project for the past 21 years returning each year to help train pastors.Even before his formal placement at Eden the Howe’s have had extensive contact and more than a few meetings with many groups at the church. He sees helping the congre-gation to best serve its community, locally, regionally and globally, as being high on his list of goals. Pastor Alan has great plans as he begins his time in Eden “I envision a Church community that lives the grace of Jesus Christ and is known for loving and supporting the people of its com-munity. I have a vision for worship in a couple of styles which will engage seekers, starters and returners.” He says as he begins planning for his time in Eden. Pastor Howe and Louise greatly enjoy the outdoors and are looking forward to taking advantage of all the oppor-tunities this region offers. This will include long summer rides on their Harley and paddles in nearby lakes and riv-ers. We invite you to say hello to them as you pass them on the street, or see them shopping at the Kazoo Factory, Agle’s Market or Surfine. Welcome them if you see them having lunch at the Four Corners or wave to them as they head to out of town on West Church Street to Dunkirk to see Mom on the Harley. Better yet, come and say hello at a 10:00 Sunday morning summer service and join us at cof-fee hour following the service and share your thoughts and prayers with all of us at the Eden United Methodist Church at 2820 East Church Street.

PICKS OF THE WEEK“The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” (PG) -- In this sequel to the story of a group of Brit seniors fi nding a second act in India, things pick up a few months after the fi rst movie left off, and our band of lovable retir-ees have been adjusting to new lives. Muriel (Maggie Smith) is helping the young hotel manager, Sonny (Dev Patel), with the business. The others (Billy Nighy, Judi Dench, Celia Imrie) paddle into their own romantic sit-uations, all set to the beat of preparations for Sonny’s upcoming traditional Indian wedding. It’s sweet, predictable, easy-going and affectionately held together by the cluster of stars at the center. Instead of the surprising charm of the fi rst, we get the warm familiarity of an OK sequel, which shouldn’t deter fans of the fi rst. If you can sit through two good episodes of “Downton Abbey” with-out getting restless, then you can probably handle a stay at this hotel.

“Ex Machina” (R) -- Ava (Alicia Vikander) is a spe-cial creation with an an-gelic face on her synthetic body, but the real question is if she has real feelings in whatever approximates her heart. A young program-mer (Domhnall Gleeson) is brought to an enigmatic CEO’s (Oscar Isaac) moun-tain hideaway to be the fi nal piece of the test -- he will have regular meetings with Ava to see just how well her simulated intellect and emotions hold up to human interaction. This is only the shiny chrome surface of the

story, with many intriguing and unexpected emotional machinations beneath. Written and directed by Alex Garland (writer of “Sunshine” and “28 Days Later”), the fi lm shows that Garland has fi ne-tuned his knack for plugging deep into humanity in the confi nes of a claustrophobic sci-fi thriller. The plot, themes, questions and ideas all go well beyond “guy has weird feelings for a robot that also might have feelings.”

“Paul Blart 2” (PG) -- Af-ter triumphing over a gang of skaters threatening his shopping mall, the titu-lar portly mall cop (Kevin James) returns for another allegedly wacky misadven-ture as a miscast action hero in an unlikely plot. When Paul brings his teen daugh-ter (Raini Rodriguez) to a security convention in Las Vegas, he fi nds himself as the bumbling Die Hard-er in an art heist run by a maniac (Neal McDonough), who forces out a few of the fi lms scarce laughs. The movie squeaks by with a few cheap

chuckles and a lot of duds.

“It Follows” (R) -- This isthe horror-movie premisethat keeps teen-slashing psy-chos up at night with anxi-ety. Nineteen-year-old Jay (Maika Monroe) contractsa strange and terrible con-dition after getting intimatewith her boyfriend -- she’s told that now there’s some-thing after her, something that won’t stop until she’s dead or she passes it on tosomebody else. Any strang-er in a crowd could be it.When anybody -- known orunknown -- starts walkingtoward her with a fi xed ex-pression, it’s time to run. It’sbone-chillingly scary, un-complicated and celebratedby horror fans for its smartgrasp on genre conventions.

Bike Safety With summer activities in full swing, Phil Tremblay (Of-ficer) from the North Collins Village Police; Janice Cata-lano (Director of Operations) from the North Collins EMS; and Chris Pulinski (student intern) from Erie 2 Criminal Justice Program, collaborated on and presented a Bike Safe-ty Program for students at the North Collins Elementary School on May 19, 2015. Demonstrations on how to prop-erly fit a helmet as well as how to determine if a bike is the proper fit for the rider were given for each class. Students participated in discussions regarding general bike safety & “rules of the road”. A lucky student from each class took home the helmet used for demonstration. It was empha-sized that all students need to wear a helmet when rid-ing off their property, and if any don’t have a one, (and can’t get one), they should contact the Village Police Dept and/or North Collins EMS to see if assistance is available. A Limited number of helmets were made available at the North Collins EMS Open House held on May 17th.

Persistent Carpal Tunnel SyndromeDEAR DR. ROACH: I had surgery late last year on my right wrist for carpal tunnel syndrome. The numbness in my fi ngers has not changed. Now I’m faced with the same problem in my left hand. I’m going to forget surgery, seeing as it wasn’t successful in my right hand.I decided to go to an acu-puncturist for laser treat-ments. I also had a cortisone shot. Neither of these has helped. Do you know of a solution for my problem? -- P.M.ANSWER: Carpal tun-nel syndrome is caused by compression on the median nerve, as it runs down the arm through a “tunnel” of bone and connective tissue deep in the wrist. It may cause pain, numbness and weakness of the wrist and hand. The thumb and middle three fi ngers are most often affected. In advanced cases, the hand muscles may be-come atrophied. The sooner the pressure on the nerve is relieved, the more likely there will not be permanent nerve damage.It sounds to me like the fi rst surgery was not done soon enough to prevent dam-age. If that’s the case, then surgery on your left hand, done sooner after the onset of symptoms, might prevent the long-term numbness present in your right hand. However, it’s possible that the diagnosis was wrong or that the surgery might not have been effective, even if done promptly.At least one study of needle acupuncture showed that it is as effective as a cortisone injection. This study exclud-

ed people who already had fi xed numbness in the fi n-gers, who are less likely to be helped by any treatment. I have not found any evi-dence that laser treatment is effective.My advice is to fi rst be sure of the diagnosis. An EMG test is a study of nerve func-tion, which can confi rm the diagnosis and may be able to predict how much damage there is and provide guid-ance on treatment. If dam-age is not too severe, other treatments such as splinting, medication, yoga or ultra-sound may be helpful. If ad-vanced, surgery done quick-ly still may be your best bet.***DEAR DR. ROACH: I just found out that I have li-pedema, a rare disease. What can I do about it? My mom and dad don’t have it, nor other family. Should I try to fi nd relatives who have it? I am told that it is an inherited disease. None of these “fam-ily” ever had it! -- L.Q.

ANSWER: Lipedema is in-deed a rare disease, although it may be underdiagnosed. It almost always is found in women, and is suspect-ed when there is marked

fat deposition symmetrical-ly between the waist andankles. The areas affected often are tender or painfulto the touch. It is not thesame as lymphedema, fl uid increase due to poorly func-tioning or damaged lymphvessels, although peoplewith lipedema can developlymphedema.Treatment includes com-pression garments or manuallymph drainage, often com-bined with surgical treat-ments such as liposuction.Only about 15 percent ofpeople with lipedema havea family history.
