CLASH OF THE TITANS: The top two teams in the Can-Am League, the Jackals and Capitales, meet for the first time this season when they open up a four-game series tonight. Quebec (23-6) holds a four-game lead over New Jersey. Eight of the Jackals’ remaining 17 games in the first half will be against Quebec. The Capitales have won back-to-back Can-Am League ti-tles, but New Jersey is 22-18 against Quebec over the past two regular seasons. Quebec swept the Jackals in the first round of the playoffs in 2010.

LAST TIME OUT: Behind 5 2/3 shutout innings by starter A.J. Wideman, the Jackals defeated the Brockton Rox, 4-0, to sweep the three-game series and notch their seventh straight win on Sunday af-ternoon at Campanelli Stadium in Brockton. Catcher Chris Anderson opened the scoring in the third in-ning with his second home run of the season. A Jer-emy Slayden RBI single in the sixth made it 2-0 be-fore a pair of sacrifice flies capped the scoring. New Jersey relievers Mike Petrowski, Jared Locke, and Steve Fox combined to toss 3.1 scoreless innings to seal the victory.

WE’RE GOING STREAKING: During their current seven-game winning streak, the Jackals have out-scored their opponents 46-19. In those seven games, New Jersey starting pitchers have allowed just 10 earned runs in 46.1 innings, good for a 1.94 ERA. The Jackals’ longest winning streak last season was six games (July 22-28) when they swept a pair of three-game sets against Sussex and Brockton.

BACK IN THE SHOW: Raul Valdes, who pitched for the Jackals in 2006, was called up to the major leagues by the St. Louis Cardinals from Triple-A Memphis last Thursday. Valdes, a Cuban defector, made his major-league debut last season when he appeared in 38 games with the New York Mets. With Memphis this season, the 33-year-old had posted a 3-0 record with a 0.55 ERA in 14 games since shifting from the rota-tion to the bullpen in mid-May.

JACKAL BITES: Yesterday marked the Jackals first scheduled off day since June 2 with New Jersey playing 25 games in 24 days over that span... The Jackals have allowed a first-inning run in 16 of 31 games this season, but are 11-0 when scoring a run in the first inning and 13-1 when plating the game’s first run... New Jersey has five players batting over .300... Leonard Davis, who has tallied a team-high 14 multi-hit games, is tied for the league lead with

19 extra-base hits... Nick Giarraputo, who is 10th in the Can-Am League with a .340 batting average, leads the league with seven hit by pitches but has yet to draw a walk in 106 at-bats... Argenis Reyes ranks ninth in the league with a .342 average and is batting .389 when leading off innings... Mike Jones and Jeremy Slayden are tied for fourth in the cir-cuit with six home runs... Jones leads the league with 30 RBIs and is batting a team-best .413 with runners in scoring position... Chris White, who is tied for fourth in the league with 11 stolen bases, is batting .333 at home but is just 3-for-36 (.083)... Myron Leslie has drawn nine more walks (28) than any other player in the league. Quebec’s Goefrey Tomlinson ranks second with 19... Leslie’s .445 on-base percentage leads the league.

NEW JERSEY’S LAST CONTEST MR. 400: Manager Joe Calfapietra collected his 400th regular-season win with the Jackals on June 20 in game two of a doubleheader against the New York Federals. Calfapietra entered the season with 386.

POWER SURGE: The Jackals tied a franchise record when they launched five home runs in a 10-4 win at Rockland on June 19. Mike Jones and Jeremy Slayden each homered twice while Leonard Davis also left the yard. Twice before in franchise history had the Jackals tallied five home runs in one game: July 18, 1998 at Adirondack and July 28, 1999 at Massachusetts. New Jersey homered 10 times in the three-game series.

FLYiNG eaSt: When the Augusta, N.J.-based Sussex Skyhawks announced they would not be operating in 2011 this past winter, several former Skyhawks made their way to the New Jersey Jackals. ed Ott, who man-aged the Skyhawks in 2010, returned to the Jackals, where he served as a coach from 2007-09. Players migrating from Augusta to Little Falls include reliever Jared Locke, and infielders Kris Sanchez and Nick Giar-raputo. The Skyhawks were owned by Floyd Hall En-terprises, which also owns the Jackals.

WELCOME BACK RAMON: Former Jackals infielder Ramon Nivar has joined the Jackals coaching staff. Nivar, a veteran of 10 professional seasons, was in spring training with the Newark Bears this past May before announcing his retirement. The 31-year-old spent parts of three seasons (2003-05) in the majors with the Orioles and Rangers and played 23 games for New Jersey in 2008.

OPENING ACT: After their 8-4 win at Pittsfield on Thursday, May 26, New Jersey is 11-3 (.786) all-time on opening day. The Jackals have now won their season opener nine times in the past 10 sea-sons, with the lone loss during that span coming last year. The Jackals also won their fourth straight home opener on May 31 when they downed New-ark 7-6.

BETTER LATE THAN NEVER: The Jackals added a pair of potential impact players late in spring train-ing. Outfielder Leonard Davis, who hit 20 home runs between Double-A Harrisburg and Triple-A Syracuse last season, signed on May 20. Myron Leslie, a 2009 Can-Am League All-Star with the Jackals, re-signed on May 24 after spending the past year in the Yan-kees’ organization.

FORMER JACKALS IN SPRING TRAINING: In addi-tion to Oakland A’s reliever Craig Breslow (with New Jersey in 2004), who is currently in his sixth major league season, several former Jackals appeared in major league spring training games. 6-foot-7 right-hander Stuart Pomeranz (2009) posted a 3.86 ERA in three relief appearances for the Los Angeles Dodg-ers. Southpaw Raul Valdes (2006) appeared in seven games (one start) for the St. Louis Cardinals. First baseman John Lindsey (2005-06) went 1-for-4 for the Dodgers. Righty Jon Hunton (2007) made one relief appearances for the A’s.

WIDEMAN RETURNS TO FORM AS JACKALS EXTEND WINNING STREAK TO SEVENSunday, June 26 Recap

Brockton, Mass. – A.J. Wideman turned in his best start of the season as the New Jersey Jackals defeated the Brockton Rox 4-0 to sweep the three-game series and win their seventh straight contest on Sunday afternoon at Campanelli Stadium.

In his fourth start of the year, Wideman tossed 5 2/3 shutout innings and allowed just three hits. Mike Petrows-ki followed Wideman and retired four of five batters he faced in his Jackals’ debut before Jared Locke tossed a scoreless inning. Steve Fox entered in the ninth with a runner aboard and loaded the bases, but escaped the jam to preserve the shutout and notch his second save in as many days.

For the third straight game, the Jackals struck first when catcher Chris Anderson clubbed his second home run of the season leading off the third inning to give New Jersey a 1-0 lead. That score held until the top of the sixth inning, when right fielder Myron Leslie led off with a single and scored two batters later when left fielder Jeremy Slayden ripped an RBI single to right to make it 2-0 New Jersey. The Jackals tacked on an insurance run in the top of the eighth when Leslie led off with a single, stole his second base of the day, advanced to third on a Slayden bunt single, and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of third baseman Nick Giarraputo to give New Jersey a 3-0 advantage. A Leonard Davis sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth made it 4-0.

Rox’ starter Mike Smith, who lost just three games last fell to 3-3 after surrendering three runs on seven hits in seven innings.

Offensively for New Jersey, Kris Sanchez went 2-for-4 with a double while Leslie singled twice, stole a pair of bases, and drew his league-leading 28th walk of the season.

Jackal Bites: The Jackals have won 11 of their last 13 contests… A.J. Wideman led the Can-Am League with 10 wins in 2009 while Mike Smith led the league with 12 wins in 2010… New Jersey is now 13-1 when scoring first this season… The Jackals’ leadoff batter reached safely in seven of nine innings… Nick Giarraputo returned to the lineup after missing two games with a hamstring injury… Over the past two seasons, the Jackals are 13-7 against Brockton...
