FLORENCE – Pinal County Public Health is issuing a rabies advisory and urging Pinal County residents to have their animals vaccinated against the fatal disease. On Wednesday, a Mammoth-San Manuel area man was startled awake by something pawing at his face. It turned out to be a stealthy skunk that had entered the man’s home through his dog door. He was able to get the skunk outside where he killed it with a shovel. The skunk tested positive for rabies, a fatal disease that can be transmitted to humans and other animals through contact with bodily fluids. “Although this situation may paint an amusing picture, the outcome is far from amusing,” Pinal County Public Health Director Tom Schryer explained. “The gentleman will have to undergo a series of vaccinations to prevent the rabies infection and, if he cannot prove that his family pets are current on their vaccinations, they will be quarantined or euthanized.” “We never want to take a family pet away from the home, but are left with no choice if there is a chance it could develop rabies and spread it to other animals or even people. Rabies is basically 100 percent fatal once symptoms appear and that is a risk we cannot afford to take with people’s lives. A simple shot would both prevent rabies in your pet and keep us from having to euthanize animals that are exposed,” Schryer said. This is the fourth rabid animal – all skunks – found in eastern Pinal County since the beginning of the year. The skunks were found in Oracle, Kearny and Mammoth within the past few months. Rabies is an infectious disease that affects the nervous system, including the brain and spinal cord of animals and humans. It is caused by a virus present in the saliva of infected animals and is transmitted to humans through contact with the live virus. Rabies is fatal to humans once symptoms appear. There has not been a documented case of human rabies in Pinal County for decades, however every year in Pinal County there are several humans exposed to rabid animals. While human exposures to rabid animals are rare, family pets are more often exposed to wild animals, including wild animals that are rabid. Pets should be vaccinated against rabies. The vaccine is available at veterinary offices or through county animal care and control. Contact Pinal County Animal Care and Control for more information concerning rabies vaccination for pets and vaccination clinic times and locations at (520) 509-3555 or toll free at (888) 431- 1311. Rabies can occur in animals anywhere in the county. In the last few years, the southern and eastern portions of Pinal County have had the most activity. Rabies is found mainly in wild animals such as bats, skunks, foxes, raccoons, bobcats and coyotes. Cats, dogs, and livestock can also become infected with rabies if they are bitten by rabid wild animals and they have not been vaccinated. Rodents such as rats, mice, gerbils, guinea pigs and squirrels are not likely to be infected with rabies. Wild animals exhibiting unusual behavior should be reported to local animal control officials. The first sign of rabies is usually a change in the animal’s behavior. Animals may act more aggressive or more tame than usual. Animals usually active at night such as skunks, foxes and bats may be out during the day. Rabid animals may appear agitated and excited or paralyzed and frightened. Sometimes, rabid animals do not show any signs of illness before death from rabies. That is why contact with wild animals should always be avoided. The Pinal County Public Health Services District recommends the following precautions: • Keep people and pets away from wild animals. Do not pick up, touch or feed wild or unfamiliar animals, especially sick or wounded ones. If someone has been bitten or scratched, or has had contact with the animal, report it immediately to animal control or health officials. • Do not “rescue” seemingly abandoned young wild animals. Usually, the mother will return. If the mother is dead or has not returned in many hours, call the Arizona Game and Fish Department. • Vaccinate all dogs and cats against rabies. Pets should be kept in a fenced yard. • Take precautions when camping, hunting or fishing. Avoid sleeping on the open ground without the protection of a closed tent or camper. Keep pets on a leash and do not allow them to wander. • Do not disturb roosting bats. If you find a bat on the ground, don’t touch it. Report the bat and its location to your local animal control officer or health department. Place a box over the bat to contain it. Be careful not to damage the bat in any way since it must be intact for rabies testing. For more information about rabies, call the Pinal County Public Health Services District at (520) 866-7138 or the Arizona Department of Health Services at (602) 364-4562. Conny Erhard passed away peacefully on the evening of May 23, 2011. Born Constance Elizabeth Leisy in Cleveland, Ohio on February 7,1929, she resided in Colorado for most of her adult life. In 2001 she made San Manuel the home base of her nomadic life. Conny was an avid outdoorsman and celebrated all parts of the natural world. Whether in the desert, at the beach, or in the mountains, she always took time to intently study everything around her. Conny fi rst came to Colorado as a summer cook on a trail ride. She ended up enjoying the mountains and moved to Denver where she held several jobs most notably teaching special education. While in Denver she met her husband Albert Erhard. They were married on November 22, 1961. Conny and Albert shared a love of the mountains and would spend most of their free time hiking, skiing, hunting, and backpacking throughout the mountains of Colorado. In

1974, they moved to a farm in the Western part of the state with their two young boys, George and Eben. Conny lived on the farm for nearly 30 years and became an avid vegetable gardener as well as an active member of numerous community organizations. She also raised guide dogs during this time. The next phase of her life brought her to San Manuel where she laid down new roots, but not ones deep enough to keep her from traveling throughout the West. In San Manuel, Conny was active in the historical society and a volunteer at the public library. She was also a regular at the Saturday Farmers Market and was often seen riding her bike through town with her dog, Abby, by her side. Conny was very much a people person and would gladly reach out to anyone that was willing to share a moment with her. Friends are welcome to join her family at a Gathering of Remembrance at 210 Avenue C on Saturday, June 4, from 1-4 p.m.

Frank Munoz, 54, died May 23, 2011 with his family by his side in Oro Valley. Frank was born in San Manuel to Eulalio and Herminia Munoz on August 18, 1956. He worked as an auto mechanic for many years with various companies. He also worked along side his father in construction. Throughout his whole life, he was known as Huillo (Welo) and during his childhood was notorious for taking objects apart. Those who knew Frank would say that he was a kind hearted man with a HUGE passion for fi shing. Frank was simple and enjoyed the small things life had to offer. He is survived by his three

daughters, Jennifer, Melissa and Frances (Babe); nine grandchildren, Joe Rudy, Jacob, Elizabeth, Issac, Julia, Jo-Anna, Joshua, Brianna and Nicholas; siblings, Angela, Manuel, Edward, Barbara, Charlie, Rick, David, Mary, Jesse and Adeline (Fifi ); and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his mother Herminia, his father Eulalio Munoz and two siblings, Felix and Martha Munoz. Dad, though you are gone, you will always be in our hearts. We love you. The family would like to extend their appreciation to the wonderful ICU staff at Oro Valley Hospital. Thanks for all that you do.

Editor, San Manuel Minerand Oracle Towne Crier: I have resided in Oracle since 1973. During all that time, I, or members of my family, have been involved with the Oracle School District in various ways. Both my children and grandchildren went to school here. Now, the school district, its employees, the governing board and community members in the district are beginning the process of considering a bond election for the District. The purpose of this letter is to talk about the bond election and what it means to the school, the students and the community. Before I start, I want to state that I am currently a member of the governing board and the views I am expressing are solely my own. I do not, and, cannot, speak for the Board , as the Board has not, yet, acted, or, voted on whether to hold a bond election. So, where to start? First, I want to say, positively, and, unequivocally, that passing a bond election would be nothing but helpful, benefi cial,

and, good for the schools, the communities in the District, and, most of all, the students! Why? There are many reasons. First of all, the district is old: one of the oldest districts in Pinal County; the vast majority of grounds, equipment, and, all other capital assets are old. The oldest building was built in 1938, one on each of the two campuses in 1950. On such facilities, there is a large and serious need for repairs, improvements, replacements, and, upgrading. There has been no bond election in a long time, not since the gymnasium at the Mountain Vista campus was built in 1991 or 1992. Repair and improvement of facilities, ground, and capital items, in general, used to be, in part, provided via the State School Facilities Board. Now, in recent years, due to the recession, and, restrictions in the State budget, virtually no monies are available, via the School Facilities Board from the State. The best way, now, to obtain adequate capital funds for building, major repairs, or, replacement of facilities, and, long term capital funds for building, major repairs

or replacement of facilities, and, long term capital items is through the passage, and, sale of bonds through a successful bond election. The override election, which was passed nearly three years ago, allows the district to override the budget control limit set by the legislature for K-3 and M & O Funds, in the amount of 15 percent per year. However, these funds cannot be used for capital repairs or improvements. In Oracle, they were used to be able to have all-day kindergarten and other programs. The override lasts for fi ve years. At that point, two to three years from now, the district can decide whether to continue the override by having another election. In any event, the override amount is small enough that is has minimal impact on property taxes. Second, now is the optimum time to have a bond election, one that will be successful. When you consider and include the amount the District has to pay in tuition to other districts for its high school students, Oracle has the lowest property tax rate of

any district in Pinal County. This is, in part, because we are not part of a union high school district and do not have to pay property taxes as well for a union high school district as other elementary districts in the county do. This is also in part because the land mass in the district is very large. As well, the overall population and housing in the district is growing to include SaddleBrooke, Eagle Crest and SaddleBrooke Ranch while the school population has stayed the same for many years: about 500 students at Oracle schools plus between 200-250 Oracle high school students who attend high school in other districts (for which the Oracle district pays tuition). At this point in time, a bond election would increase the property taxes by a relatively small amount: approximately 51 cents per $100 of secondary assessed valuation. This works out to about $12 per month in property taxes, for a $200,000 house. Further, at a time when there is a recession and the economy is down, the work a bond election would be able

Editor, San Manuel Miner: As of noon on Monday, May 30, a total of one dozen Oracle landowners have contacted us, to offer parcels of land for consideration by Verizon Wireless, for the installation of the proposed cell tower in the town of Oracle. Verizon Wireless previously agreed to consider up to ten alternates sites, in addition to their previous

Letter to the Editor: Possible bond election would be good for the Oracle School District

to bring to the community to build, repair or replace items at the school facilities would be signifi cant and a substantial benefi t to the residents and community in general. The time to bring business and activity to the community is when the economy is down and we need it the most. Further, improving the looks and capacity of the schools would be an added attraction for bringing students to the schools. Third and, perhaps most importantly, the students would benefi t as well as the schools and staff. Make no mistake, these are good schools and the students are doing well. For as long as the AIMS test has been in place, the students have achieved well on the tests, being labeled as performing plus in the results. The students are also offered a wide variety of

courses and extracurricular activities and are stimulated and taught well. But, the facilities where they are taught and the grounds where they play could be greatly improved. Some classrooms are too small. In some areas, safety needs to be considered and cleanliness and modern technology improved. Any and all repairs, replacements and improvements made can only be a benefi t to the students who have to be there every day. So, to me, the benefi ts of having a successful bond election far outweigh any possible drawbacks, if there are any! Remember, life is not just about enhancing our own lives and wealth; it is about helping and bettering the lives of the children, whenever and however we can! Let’s do it! /s/ Betty Harmon

Letter to the Editor: Verizon to consider 12 additional sites as well as Oracle Market property for cell tower

single-site choice on the Darimont property, just north of the Oracle Market in the center of town. We have now exceeded the 10-site goal of this public-input search process. Several other landowners have shown possible interest in offering up a site, but have taken no positive action to do so. This week a representative of Pinnacle Consulting,

Inc. - the agent for Verizon Wireless in this selection process - will visit Oracle to personally inspect each of the 12 alternate-site properties, and gather GPS location and elevation data. This information then will be used by Verizon Wireless engineers to rate and rank each of these sites, and narrow the site selection list to the three properties which offer the

best technical capability for increased cell coverage for Oracle residents. Following this technical review, a second and fi nal public Oracle Town Meeting on this issue will be scheduled at the Oracle Community Center. At that time, Pinnacle Consulting, Inc. representatives will present the review fi ndings. This meeting will be announced well in advance, so interested local residents can attend and express their views on the these three recommended sites. The meeting date will probably be scheduled for late June. Any questions, please call 896-2832. Thank you,/s/ Ross Hopkins

Editor, San Manuel Miner: Congratulations to Sun Life Family Health Center! Sun Life is a fi nalist for the RED (Real Estate and Development) Award. Wespac Construction, Inc., the company that built the new Family Practice and Pharmacy in Eloy, nominated Sun Life under the categories of Medical and Sustainable. We are honored by the nomination and very proud of our newest facility. Wespac nominated Sun Life because we chose to have the new Eloy facility built “green.” The building was designed to achieve a 15% energy savings (over the baseline energy requirements). Over 75% of the waste generated during construction was diverted from the landfi lls. Cleaner indoor air quality is ensured by using low VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) materials with recycled content in construction. Sustainable building features include LED and energy effi cient lighting, A/C units with economizers, programmable thermostats, low water use plumbing fi xtures and shading devices in front of the south and west window. We are maximizing daylight in the building through the use of skylights and an interior courtyard, which also provides natural light to the interior exam room, and the lobby is illuminated mostly by natural light. Each space was designed to promote the health and wellness of the individual patient as well as the staff providing their care. The reception area promotes visual and acoustical privacy. Sustainable materials and fi nishes form a professional well organized space in a welcoming atmosphere. The colors and textures of the natural desert fi ll the interior, creating a quietly rustic, modern environment. It is apparent to me that Sun Life’s investment in Eloy was not only for the health and

Letter to the Editor: Kudos for Sun Life Family Health

wellness of the individuals who use our family practice and pharmacy, but, the health and wellness of our whole community. We hope that patients and residents alike

are as proud as we are to have this beautiful new building showcased in Eloy./s/ Travis J. Robinette, CEOSun Life Family Health Center

By Taylor Sheaffer Ritter I could be wrong and I certainly hope someone will tell me if this is not the case, but I try to be nice, helpful and generous if the opportunity is there and I am able to do so. This is just my belief and I am sure I have had a hypocrite moment or two, but I try not to judge others on a first impression simply due to the fact that I have no idea what their experience in life has been nor do I have any understanding of what trials and tribulations they are currently undergoing. I feel like there is a chance to learn something from everyone you meet, whether the experience be pleasant or not. Having said this, I have to admit that it is really cool when you’re nice and nice comes right back to hug you. This happened to me recently and it only reinforced my belief of ‘why not be nice?’ Here’s how it went: Ben was heading back to Minnesota to hang with his twin brother and dad to get some serious guy time in watching hockey games, drinking Pabst and what not…and whenever Ben leaves I get a little stir crazy. The last time Ben left me alone home by myself with the dogs, a spider the size of a large mouse darted across my room and I ran around with a broom, screaming like a three year old, for the better part of an hour…of course, this happens when Ben is gone. So as it was still somewhat pleasant outside, I gathered up a few friends and we set off to go camping in the White Canyon Wilderness. I arrived early to secure our spot in this awesome canyon…if you have not explored it, I really recommend it. Since the White Canyon is used by ranchers, our campsite was rather full of, shall we say, “fertilizer,” and as I surveyed this I mentally karate-kicked myself in the head for staring at my shovel earlier and thinking ‘Why would I need that?’ I have luck like this, even when I have a perfectly capable large shovel, purchased for exactly this type of moment, I am stupid and would rather struggle over large mounds of ‘doo’ with a rather flimsy piece of cardboard with bullet holes in it, that ‘Thank goodness’ someone was good enough to leave behind. I felt my dog, Roo, silently judging me, ‘Not one of your top moments, Mom!’ After eradicating that pleasant material from our campsite, I set to putting up the tent in a beautiful little patch of grass with branches blessedly bent over it in a nice arch. It was lovely and soft and perfect and within five minutes I was confronted with why this was the case. A large black cow, cause of the ‘doo,’ was standing on the other side of my tent, I assume rather irritated that I had just pitched my make-shift home over her bed. This standoff lasted 15 minutes while I clapped, tried to tap her with a branch and attempted to shoo her away. She resolved herself to stand across the creek-bed and angrily moo at me; ornery, old sow. Because I am a nerd and my mother never taught me that camping meant no-gourmet, I had planned a hearty meal of bourbon bbq-ed ribs, crisp pan-roasted potatoes and green beans with a selection of delicious cheese and soft baguette to start. As we were preparing our meal, two hikers ambled

Taylor’s Take: Sometimes it pays to be nice!

Fairly healthy ...On Saturday, May 21,the Mountain Vista School gym was the site of a health fair. Many local health providers, vendors and organizations were present to give out

information and answer questions about available health services in the area. There were raffl e prizes and give away items as well as refreshments for everyone. In talking with some of the providers, they would like to see more young families attend the next fair. (John Hernandez photos)

in and we talked for a while to fi nd out that they were hiking from Apache Junction all the way to Albuquerque. This meant that they had to pack everything they needed on their back…which basically spelled out Ramen. Ramen is good when you are studying for an exam or just need a quick treat before work or whatever, but defi nitely gets a little old if consumed for two months straight. Friends and I looked around, we had more than enough food, so we invited the pair to stay for dinner with us. It was scrumptious and I assume

the best meal they had and would have in a while. We ate and drank and were merry and eventually all retired to our respective tents, having said good night to our guests who had an early start. We awoke the next morning to fi nd a couple business cards on the table. It just so happened that one of our guests was part-owner of the Arizona Diamondbacks. One of his business cards would afford us two tickets to a game. Sweet! Recently, Ben and I found out that his favorite team, the Minnesota Twins, were playing the D-backs so we looked at the business card

and decided to make a trip of it. We arrived assuming that we would get cheap seats way up among the birds. Once again, let me remind you, being nice is just a great thing to practice and takes very little effort; yet occasionally, being nice gets you 27th row fi rst base seats to a Major Leagues game and you get to watch your fi ancé act like he just won the sports lottery and excitedly watch his favorite team play.
