East region, its population can’t be compared with that of countries like India and Indonesia. That’s one of the reasons why the amount of spam even from this country is so low. The second reason is that users are careful about protecting their computers,” explains Maria Namestnikova, Senior Spam Analyst at Kaspersky Lab.

Globally, the share of spam in mail traffic differs slightly from country to country. In the third quarter of 2011 the global average fell 2.7 percentage points compared to Q2 and averaged 79.8%. In Q3, more than 50% of all spam messages in the world originated from just six countries: India (14.8%), Indonesia (10.6%), Brazil (9.65%), Peru (6.65%), South Korea (5.85%) and Ukraine (3.7%). All of the countries that make up the top 10 sources of spam are situated in South America, Asia and eastern Europe. This is due to the fact that there are numerous users in these countries

and they are, for the most part, not very experienced when it comes to IT security. This makes them a soft target for cybercriminals spreading spam-bots.

There are features of spam that are peculiar to the Middle East (as well as Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon) just like in all other regions of the world.

“First of all it’s a language thing. It’s not surprising that many messages sent to users in the Middle East region are in Arabic. At the same time, sending spam in Arabic to other regions is a waste of time. As a result, most Arabic spam messages are sent by local companies looking for customers in their region and advertising via spam. It doesn’t make these messages safe or ’good’ – they are, after all, spam,” warns Namestnikova.

International spam advertising things like pharmaceuticals and fake designer goods is sent mostly in English – the relatively small number

“ I am at GITEX to network with our clientele and improve awareness of our products which include photocopiers, toner cartridges and spare parts. I have been coming to the exhibition since 2006 and I hope to be a part of it next year as well. This year I am excited because Kiyo is introducing new laser cartridges and of course GITEX is the best platform to do that in the Middle East.”

Egypt, Lebanon and JordanOnce again the most populous country of these three is the biggest source of spam. The share of global spam originating from Egypt is 0.22%, whereas the share of spam originating from Lebanon is more than two times less – 0.09%; Jordan accounts for even less – 0.07%.

These figures may appear to be unimpressive, but you need to keep in mind that the total amount of spam messages sent daily runs into the billions. So, even small figures such as 0.07% or 0.69% represent a huge amount of mail traffic – not thousands but millions of messages.

of users makes it unprofitable to translate all these messages into Arabic. Of course, yet another factor is that of culture and religion. All local and Muslim events and holidays are used in regional spam messages. In August, for instance, we saw many messages connected with Ramadan.

100GBASE-SR10 and 40GBASE-SR4 equipment.”

Also on display will be the Secure RJ Copper System. The system adds to Leviton’s line of keyed connectivity solutions, which also includes the Secure Keyed LC Fiber System. With the two systems, organisations can physically secure all of their high-priority copper and fibre ports. The new secure copper system provides physical port security with a patent-pending locking mechanism that can only be released with a matching-colour keyed extraction tool, claims the company.

The design is compatible with industry standard RJ ports in network equipment, devices, patch panels, and work area outlets. System components include patch cords, trunks, port blockers, and extraction tools, and are available in CAT 6A and CAT 6.

Zservices, the provider of local Zscaler cloud security services in the Middle East, is showcasing the first cloud-delivered Web and e-mail Security-as-a-Service (SaaS) infrastructure – all physically located and available in the Middle East region.

Nidal Taha, Managing Director, Zservices says, “Zservices was established in April 2011 to create and deploy a local Zscaler Cloud infrastructure across the Middle East region. We hope to meet other large telecom operators at the event to discuss business possibilities”.

Zservices Middle East cloud infrastructure is built and powered by Zscaler - The Cloud Security Company -which offers policy-based secure Internet access for any employee, on any device, anywhere.

Zscaler’s true, purpose-built and borderless global security cloud delivers comprehensive security and near-zero latency – all without the need to deploy hardware, software or endpoint agents. Misplaced, forgotten, lost or stolen – this is the fate of an estimated thousands of USBs in the Middle East annually. Kingston Technology is urging the Middle East’s increasingly mobile and connected professionals, the majority of whom use USB technology to transport data, to secure the content of these devices during GITEX.

With a large number of workers owning and using a USB on a daily basis, choosing vendors with reliable, proven security technology will provide peace of mind that data stored on USBs is secure. Kingston Technology is showcasing a range of secure USB solutions, including the recently-launched DataTraveler 4000 Managed (DT4000-M), which is ideal for high value corporate deployments, offering superior protection (FIPS 140-2), flexibility and centralised management control at an affordable cost. Visitors to its stand will also be the first in the region to experience the brand new Kingston DataTraveler 6000 (DT6000), launching globally this month.

Organisations spend millions of dollars annually on network security to thwart hackers and other outsider threats. Currently, enterprise USB options are limited in their ability to offer both flexibility and stringent security. Existing solutions range from expensive and rigid platforms built to adhere to the highest

“Managed secure USB drives are a necessity within many professional organizations in the Middle East, whose team members are highly mobile and who require high volumes of data and images to travel with them,” said Antoine Harb, Business Development Manager – MEA, Kingston. “The financial, legal and truly practical benefits of a strategic, secure USB drive plan for companies in the region are driving this movement.”

government security certifications, to lightweight security offerings that offer little in the way of specific device management and are being loosely managed with general purpose endpoint security software. Kingston’s secure USB offerings draw from the company’s unparalleled expertise with field-proven, government-tested and internationally deployed platforms supported with the industry’s best warranty, service and support. While other companies concentrate on security around cloud-based services, Kingston keeps its focus on the hardware security side. Our longstanding relationships with controller and NAND Flash suppliers as well as global distribution capabilities ensure a steady supply of products to meet customer needs.

Kingston Technology is also showcasing the next major milestone in flash memory for USB products with the Kingston DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 Generation 2 (G2). Kingston’s DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 G2 features the latest technology for USB 3.0 Flash drives, making it ideal for IT professionals and enthusiasts who want to take advantage of all the performance improvements offered by USB 3.0 technology right away. The new DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 G2 has a read speed of 100MB/s, and a write speed of 70 MB/s. It is available in 16-, 32- and 64GB capacities.
