2 Nov. 14, 2021 St. Charles Bor omeo Catholic ChurchFrom the Pastor / Noticias del Párroco

One of the continual struggles during the ongoing pandemic has been trying to balance being welcoming with keeping people safe. We want to serve people, above all by

providing everyone who comes to us a place to worship God. At the same time, we have had to be mindful of providing an safe environment, especially for the most vulnerable members of our community, and this has included policies that, by their very nature, have limited the number of people who can be present with us.

In trying to fi nd this balance, there is no perfect answer. I have had countless people tell me during this time that I am making the wrong decision, either having too many restrictions and thus not being welcoming enough, or not having enough restrictions and thus not being safe enough. Needless to say, there was no class in seminary titled, “Running a Parish During a Pandemic.”

Thankfully, with the continued rollout of the vaccine, there is hope that the pandemic may truly be waning. We have seen this refl ected in the number of people returning to regular attendance at Sunday Mass. While it is good to see so many people again joining us in worship, it has necessitated some changes in order to continuing welcoming everyone while also keeping everyone safe.

Beginning this weekend, the pews in half of the church are completely open, while the other half remains half-opened.Regardless of which half of the church you are sitting in, we encourage you to continue practicing social distancing and wearing a face mask both for your own safety as well as for the safety of those around you.

In addition, beginning with the First Sunday of Advent, we will be adding a 5 p.m. Mass on Saturday evening. The fi rst 5 p.m. Mass will be Nov. 27.

Adding a Mass time has a lot of logistical requirements. One unique consideration here is the fact that about a quarter of our parishioners speak Spanish. I am continually mindful of working to serve our entire parish community in all of our activities, especially in the celebration of the Mass. For the 5 p.m. Mass on Saturday, the majority of the Mass will be in English. However, the Gospel and homily will be proclaimed in both English and Spanish in order to be accessible for both our English-speaking and Spanish-speaking parishioners.

I am fully aware of the fact that many people do not like bilingual liturgies. As a priest, it is much easier for me to celebrate Mass entirely in one language rather than switching between them. However, this compromise of a primarily-English Mass with bilingual Gospel and homily seems like the best way to serve members of our parish at this time.

It is important to remember that things will almost certainly continue to change as we continue to respond to changes in the pandemic. We will continue to evaluate the Mass schedule in the months ahead in order to meet the needs of our parish family.

4 Nov. 14, 2021 St. Charles Bor omeo Catholic Church

This Sunday is the second to last

Sunday of our liturgical year. As we approach the end of the Church year, our Gospel invites us to consider Jesus’s predictions and teaching about the end of the world. Jesus’s words about this are spoken to his disciples as he prepares them for his passion and death.

Last Sunday we heard Jesus’s observation about the contributions being made to the temple treasury and the example of sacrifi cial giving that he saw in the poor widow’s offering. If we had been reading Mark’s Gospel continuously, we would have heard Jesus predict the destruction of the Temple, his teaching about the costs of discipleship, and the woes that will accompany the end times. Finally, we would have heard Jesus instruct his disciples about the need for watchfulness so that they will not be caught unprepared for this fi nal

day of judgment.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus continues this teaching by offering his disciples signs that will indicate that the coming of the Son of Man is near. Next, Jesus offers the lesson of the fi g tree, a parable that teaches that if one knows how to read the signs, one can be prepared for the end

times. Jesus also teaches, however, that no one knows when the end time will come, except the Father. In the verses that follow this reading in Mark’s Gospel, Jesus continues to warn his disciples to be on watch for this end time.

Jesus’s words are not spoken to frighten his disciples, nor should they frighten us. Rather, they are offered to prepare us for the changes we will experience during our lifetimes and at the end times. Our consolation and hope is found in the lasting nature of Jesus’s words and God’s never-ending love for us.
