BUILDING PROTOTYPES

What is a prototype?

“A prototype is an early sample, model or release of a product built to test a concept or process or to act as a thing to be replicated or learned from.”

STEVE KRUG

In the next 60 minutes you will create a clickable app prototype!

01 | IDENTIFY PROBLEMS & OPPORTUNITIES

Our first step it to identify a user need or value gap that

could be solved by a new digital service.

Take 10 minutes with your partner, introduce yourself and

ask these questions:

• What business are you in?

• What do you or your customers struggle with on a daily

basis?

• What annoys you about your daily routine?

• What app/websites do you use on a daily basis and why?

Identify a need or value gap.

02 | IDEATE (CONCEPT)

Based on the need/value gap of your partner, take 5

minutes and think of a concept for a digital service.

Make as many notes and sketches as you can! Be

creative and push the boundaries!

After 5 minutes you should have a roughly defined

service concept.

Use blank A4 paper provided.

02 | IDEATE (FLOW & INITIAL SKETCHES)

Now that you have your concept, think of the flow of the digital service and start some initial

sketches.

03 | CREATE PROTOTYPE

Once you have the flows and initial sketches, you are

ready to sketch the pages in more detail.

We’ll now spend the next 15 minutes creating a simple

clickable app prototype for your concept.

Use the phone screen templates to create at least 4

frames of the app.

Think of these as a portfolio for your app. Highlight key

features and flows that demonstrate the value of the

service.

04 | PRODUCE

Next is to use the Marvel app!

Take 10 minutes and upload your sketches and make

elements within them clickable to create flows from one

screen to the next.

This is all about trial and error, don’t be afraid to make

mistakes.

05 | PRESENT

Presentation time!

Each person must present their app prototype to the

others covering the need/value gap, the overall service

concept and the flow of the app.
