A-Hang-gliding

If you’re looking for a bit of risk, hang-gliding might be you! It cam be expensive, but there’s nothing like flying above the countryside. There are clubs all around the country which will give you training. You need to be in shape before you start and you need quite a bit of free time, but it’s a great hobby.

B-Karate

It’s not as violent as it looks, but you do need to be quite fit. Most clubs organize competitions against other local clubs, and it doesn’t cost much to get started. Why not give it a go? You could be a black belt before you know it!

C-Yoga

Yoga is an easy form of exercise for people of any age. A teacher shows you and the rest of your group how to move your body slowly to help you relax. It can even help with problems in different parts of your body.

D-Cycling

Your local cycling club is a great place to make new friends and get yourself back in shape. All you need is a bike, a helmet and lots of enthusiasm. Clubs organize exciting rides around the local area, from easy ones to more difficult ones. Everyone helps everyone else and it can be a great day out.

E-Gymnastics

In gymnastics, you perform to music. You need to have a good sense of balance, and the younger you are, the better. You ususally join a class, so you get to know people, and clubs often have competitions with other clubs, sometimes even in other countries.

F-Fishing

Fishing is a fantastic way to get away from it all. If your idea of a great day out is just you and the fish, out in the country, away from people, then fishing will suit you. Whether you go for just an hour or spend the whole day catching fish, it’s an activity that thousand of people love.

The First Computer Programmer

F. Room in city centre. Person wanted to share a room in a student house. This is a small attic room, and has shared use of the bathroom and kitchen. Parking in shed for bicycles, and rent to be paid in cash every week. Please no smokers or pets. At present there are three guys and two girls, so another girl would be particularly welcome.

G. This old house in the city centre is for a family or a single person but it needs some repairs. This property is perfectly located between the stock exchange and the Arthur Wilson secondary school, with the main shopping area just 200 meters away.

H. This old age home has a place for a married couple. Cooking and cleaning are done by the home’s domestic staff, and there is a 24-hour medical and security service. Visitors are welcome, but pets are not allowed for health reasons.

Ada Lovelace was the daughter of the poet Lord Byron. She was taught by Mary Somerville, a well-known researcher and scientific author, who introduced her to Charles Babbage in June 1833. Babbage was an English mathematician, who first had the idea for a programmable computer.

In 1842 and 1843, Ada translated the work of an Italian mathematician, Luigi Menabrea, on Babbage's Analytical Engine. Though mechanical, this machine was an important step in the history of computers; it was the design of a mechanical general-purpose computer. Babbage worked on it for many years until his death in 1871. However, because of financial, political, and legal issues, the engine was never built. The design of the machine was very modern; it anticipated the first completed general-purpose computers by about 100 years.

When Ada translated the article, she added a set of notes which specified in complete detail a method for calculating certain numbers with the Analytical Engine, which have since been recognized by historians as the world's first computer program. She also saw possibilities in it that Babbage hadn't: she realised that the machine could compose pieces of music. The computer programming language 'Ada', used in some aviation and military programs, is named after her.

Visit Angkor WatSiem Reap is a small town near the world famous temple of Angkor Wat. The makers of a controversial computer game about bullying have decided to go ahead and launch it despite calls for it to be banned. In the game, players take on the role of a new students at a school and have to fight the bullies, by punching them or hitting them with a baseball bat.

Critics have said that the game encourages violence, but the makers deny this and say that, while there is violence in the game, it is just an amusing look at school life, besides which, the violence in the game is directed against the bullies to protect pupils who are being bullied. The makers also say that players will learn to stand up to bullies.

A British politician, a former minister, has called for it to be banned as it might affect the way young people perceive violence.

Charlie Chaplin

Charlie Chaplin was one of the first international film stars. Between 1914 and 1967 he made dozens of comedy films that people around the world enjoyed and he became very rich. It was a big change from his childhood when he, his brother and his mother were living in London without any money. Chaplin was born in England but moved to America at the age of 23. He was part f a comedy show that appeared in theatres around the country. He became very popular for his physical comedy. People loved the way he fell, rolled and jumped on stage, while the ohter actors tried to sing songs or do other acts. In 1913, he got a job with Mack Sennet, who ran a film company called Keystone. Sennet already had a number of successful film comedians at Keystone, and people laughed at their crazy films in cinemas around America. This character was “The little tramp”, a poor man with nowhere to live. When the first film starring this character appeared in cinemas in 1914, the audiences loved him from the start. He was a kind, clever character who had bad luck in a difficult world. Films at the time were silent but Chaplin managed to communicate a lot with emotion - both happy and sad – without words. I recently spent two years in the Arctic filming the series Blue Planet. I love being in an environment that hasn’t changed for 20,000 years. Of course it’s freezing, but it must be a healthy place because you never catch colds.When I’m filming, I like to really feel how lonely the environment is. Filming underwater involves cutting through thick ice and diving in tied to a line. The person at the other end has to be ready to pull you out fast if necessary.Originally I was a research diver for the British Antarctic Survey project, but for me science lacked excitement. I’d always enjoyed photography, and whenever camera teams passed through, they encouraged me to watch and learn. I was then able to move into filming in 1985 and have concentrated on Arctic and Antarctic wildlife ever since.I prefer to be face to face with the animals I’m filming. I haven’t been in the water with killer whales yet, but I plan to. Of course, it’s dangerous if you choose the wrong moment. They’re big animals and can move fast, so I’d be stupid to film them searching for food!I’ve never had problems with polar bears, although once I was frightened when one tried to get into my tent. Polar bears are bold, clever and dangerous. .... I must tell you about our holiday this year - it was one of the best we'd ever had. No, we weren't staying in an expensive hotel, but a youth hostel! I know what you're thinking: we must be crazy! But we aren’t - I just wish we'd discovered youth hostels years ago. Now that I'm back at university again luxury hotels are a thing of the past, and I was complaining about this one day to a friend who said that she and her family never stayed anywhere but hostels. I had no idea that hostels could be somewhat similar to a cottage or a castle. In fact there are four different grades - simple, standard, superior and special so you pay an overnight charge according to the kind of hostel you stay at. You can't stay more than three nights at a time but that didn't bother us because we wanted a touring holiday. Basically you look after yourself although most hostels serve breakfast and some of them offer an evening meal if you arrive early enough. There are a few rules like having to be in by 11 p.m. in the evening and out by 10 a.m. in the morning but otherwise you're free to do what you want. Now I really believe that the best thing about this whole holiday was meeting so many different and interesting people. I used to think hostels were only for the young and noisy, but not any more. beautiful cottages with well kept gardens, and there is a small church which dates back to the eleventh century. To get to

Camberwell, take Bus 46 from the Bus station. Buses leave every two hours.

HidcotHidcot is an attractive village situated on the River Owell. Wildlife lovers should visit the Nature Park to the south of the

village, where there are large numbers of rare birds and flowers. However, you will probably see plenty of wildlife from the

bridge in the village centre! In Hidcot, you can take a two-hour river cruise - a great way to see the countryside and learn

about the local wildlife from a guide. If you prefer to explore the river by yourself, it’s well worth walking one and a half

miles along the river to the pub ‘The Boat’ which cannot be reached by road. Here, you can hire small boats and explore

the river at your leisure. To get to Hidcot, take Bus 7A to Reeford. Hidcot is half way between Hartbridge and Reeford.

TatterbridgeThe beautiful village of Tatterbridge was home to the children’s writer Jane Potter, whose stories of Benjamin Bear are

loved by adults and children around the world. Jane Potter’s home is now a museum and tea shop, and is well worth a

visit just for its wonderful gardens. It also has a gift shop where you can buy souvenirs and books. Tatterbridge has a

number of interesting shops including an excellent cake shop, and ‘Wendy’s Giftshop’ where you can find lots of unusual

gifts made by hand by local artists. Lovers of Jane Potter’s books should also walk to the Green Valley woods, which have

not changed since Jane Potter wrote her stories there one hundred years ago.

To get to Tatterbridge, take Bus 4 from outside the cinema. It takes about 40 minutes to get there.

MoordaleThis old industrial village is the highest village in the area. Here in the hills, coal was found in the late eighteenth century,

and people came here in great numbers to take it out of the ground and transport it to the nearby towns. Many industries

grew up in the area, including a paper factory and a cotton factory. The industries all closed down in the nineteenth

century, and since then Moordale has gone back to being a quiet farming village. However, if you walk from the village

centre up the steep hill to the north, you can still see the paths where horses used to carry the coal. There is a four mile

walk around the village which has some amazing views, but walkers are must be careful as the path is steep in places

and they could slip. To get to Moordale, take Bus 7A to Reeford, and then take the number 38 bus to Moordale.

I recently spent two years in the Arctic filming the series Blue Planet. I love being in an environment that hasn’t changed for 20,000 years. Of course it’s freezing, but it must be a healthy place because you never catch colds.When I’m filming, I like to really feel how lonely the environment is. Filming underwater involves cutting through thick ice and diving in tied to a line. The person at the other end has to be ready to pull you out fast if necessary.Originally I was a research diver for the British Antarctic Survey project, but for me science lacked excitement. I’d always enjoyed photography, and whenever camera teams passed through, they encouraged me to watch and learn. I was then able to move into filming in 1985 and have concentrated on Arctic and Antarctic wildlife ever since.I prefer to be face to face with the animals I’m filming. I haven’t been in the water with killer whales yet, but I plan to. Of course, it’s dangerous if you choose the wrong moment. They’re big animals and can move fast, so I’d be stupid to film them searching for food!I’ve never had problems with polar bears, although once I was frightened when one tried to get into my tent. Polar bears are bold, clever and dangerous. But I made this one see I wasn’t about to attack it – I’m sure it realised I wouldn’t hurt it.When I come back home from my trips, I work in the mornings and spend the afternoons swimming to keep it fit. Now I’m fifty, filming is harder. The challenge for me is to continue to deliver high-quality work.

She liked flowers. At least, he remembered somebody telling him that she liked roses. The western alphabet Answer Sheet

The western alphabet, which is used in Europe, the Americas, Africa, Australia and New Zealand as well as in other countries, originated in the middle east. The people who gave the world this alphabet were the Phoneacians, a people who established colonies all over the Mediterranean, including Carthage in Africa and Gades in Spain. In their alphabet, the letters were represented by little pictures which represented sounds.The Phoneacian A was aelph, which means "bull". and it was made from a little picture of a bull's head. The letter B was beth which meant "house", and showed the round-roofed buildings which you can still see today in Syria.

The Phoneacians had contact with another nation of sailors, the Greeks, with whom they fought and traded. The Greeks also started to use the Phoneacian alphabet. They changed the names so aelph and beth became alpha and beta. The shapes of the letters are the same but they have been turned sideways. If you know any Greek, you can try turning the letters around again, and see how they look. You will see that the curve on the right of the Greek A becomes the horns of a little bull.

Of course, the first two letters of the alphabet give it its name. Over the years there have been changes. Latin developed an alphabet with some different letters to the Greeks, and other letters have been added since. But really westerners are using the same system of writing which has served them so well for thousands of years.

The savannah

The tourist looking at the African savannah on a summer afternoon might be excused for thinking that the wide yellow grass plain was completely deserted of life, almost a desert. With only a few small thorn trees sticking out through the veldt, there seems to be almost no place for a living creature to hide. However, under those trees you might find small steenbok, sleeping in the shade, and waiting for the night to fall. There may even be a small group of lions somewhere, their bodies exactly the same shade as the tall grass around them. In the holes in the ground a host of tiny creatures, from rabbits and badgers to rats and snakes are waiting for the heat to finish. The tall grass also hides the fact that there may be a small stream running across the middle of the plain. One clue that there may be water here is the sight of a majestic Marshall eagle circling slowly over the grassland. When he drops, he may come up with a small fish, or maybe a grass snake that has been waiting at the edge of a pool in the hope of catching a frog. The best time to see the animals then, is in the evening, just as the sun is setting. The best time of the year to come is in late September, or early August, just before the rains. Then the animals must come to the waterholes, as there is no other place for them to drink. And they like to come while it is still light, so they can see if any dangers are creeping up on them. So it is at sunset, and after the night falls, that the creatures of the African veldt rise and go about their business.
