According to the State Fair public relations manager Dave Bullard, an estimated 220,000 people attended Chevy Court concerts within only the first 10 days of the fair. The increase in numbers is believed to be a result of the increase in talent being recruited by the Chevy Court Stage, boasting acts such as Steve Miller Band, Nick Jonas, Jason Derulo and Cole Swindell. “We’ve increased our investment in talent for this stage and created a much more diverse lineup. That effort is paying big dividends for the Fair, its vendors, and music fans,” said State Fair Acting Director Troy Waffner. “We’ve said that we’re the best free music festival among all state fairs. These numbers prove that the future of music at the Great New York state Fair is at Chevy Court.” The previous record of 175,600 attendants for free Chevy Court concerts in 2015, was broken only eight days into the fair after Jason Derulo brought in 24,800 viewers. By Sunday, the stage had been seen by 219,600 people. The final two “major” acts of the fair, Steve Miller Band [which brought in an additional 39,000 guests] and Nick Jonas further smashed Chevy Court attendance records. “I believe they have had a lot of great shows this year for free and not so many at the grandstand,” said junior Madeline Warren. “Nick Jonas came and Jason Derulo the other night was crazy! These are well known people who are very famous so it's awesome that they come for free. We are really only paying a small fee just to get into the fair, and Attendance at Chevy Court Hits All Time High it comes with a free concert that people can actually enjoy.” This year also marked the last shows at the Fair’s Grandstand arena, and the opening of the new Waterfront Amphitheatre on Onondaga Lake. However, come next year, those will not be the only changes made to the Fairgrounds concert venues. Chevy Court will undergo renovation in the fall as part of a $50 million dollar project to upgrade the fairgrounds. The current stage and backstage area will be torn down and remodeled in time for the 2016 fair concerts. With the renovations to the stage and an increased number of attendants, the question of additional seating being added may be a relevant one. “The view of the stage was great. We were able to see two really large names at no charge. I think that in itself was great. We did not have seats. By the time that we arrived at the concert, it was standing room only,” said Senior Erin Simmons, who attended both Jason Derulo’s and Cole Swindell’s concerts. “I think if the fair was to add more seats then they may have a larger turnout. And if there was more seating on the lawn then they would have a greater crowd. Overall, I believe that the fair did a great job with the amount of space that was available to their audience.” Despite, the climbing temperatures and record crowds, many still believe that the free Chevy Court Acts are a great deal filled with great talent. “I do think that the talent that was offered at the fair was amazing for a free concert. I think that if it was a paid concert then the fair would not have seen as large of a crowd,” said Simmons. “Overall, each concert was a great experience." Movie Review: We Are Your FriendsBy Abigail Adams ‘16Editor-in-Chief

To say We Are Your Friends was entertaining would be a total understatement. It was completely captivating. A true homage to our drug loving, good music hunting, booty shaking generation of hooligans. This movie brings artistry to the front row and never lets you get bored. Director Max Joseph [yes, he’s from "Catfish"] did a seriously impressive job at making this movie a summer must-see.

Every car ride through the

valley, shady drug deal, and bass drop made you feel as if you were there. We Are Your Friends incorporates unique takes on quotes, voice-overs , and graphics.

The camera angles make you notice every detail of someone’s body language

and personality. Another impressive part of this film was the star, Zac Efron. Proving his acting chops have come a long way since those High School Musicals. Efron plays an up-and-coming DJ stuck in a rut, going nowhere, playing the same club, taking the same drugs, hanging out with the same people every day. But one random night changes everything, and he makes a connection that puts him even closer to his dreams. Efron proves his worth and realizes there’s more to his music that

he hasn’t discovered quite yet. The movie takes you on

his journey: somewhat sad, somewhat realistic, somewhat beautiful. We Are Your Friends depicts a group of people — all different, but going through some of the same things — that have been at a standstill for too long and need the extra nudge to snap out of it. Efron and his gang of valley boys often hang out in a drained pool, serving as a metaphor for their lack of productivity to make their lives better. Every scene was highlighted by an addictive, heavy EDM track just begging to be Shazam’d. [P.S. the soundtrack is just as awesome as the movie]. Scenic routes through the California valley make you wish you were on vacation, even if it is to a dusty corner gas station or a hipster espresso shop.

Some might think it’s a cliche movie for dreamers, but I think it’s the talk of our time and represents what most twenty-something’s go through in life.

So the time has come to put away the flip-flops and shorts and say hello to everything pumpkin flavored. But, before we say goodbye to summer and hello to fall, let’s talk about the top three summer hits. These are the songs that will forever remain in our heads and our hearts...or at least until the end of the year.

3. Taylor Swift feat. Kendrick Lamar: "Bad Blood"

Yes, it wouldn't quite be summer — or any season really — without something from Taylor Swift. Take lyrics like, “Band-Aids don’t fix bullet holes,” add Kendrick Lamar, and you’ve got a hit. This was the song of the summer to blare as you took a drive in your car.

2. Walk the Moon: "Shut

Up and Dance"I like to call this the song

you can’t run from. It’s on the radio, it’s in the clubs, it’s on TV, it’s everywhere 24/7. “Shut Up and Dance” put Walk the Moon on the pop map. I like to call this the song of the summer to dance to.

1. Wiz Khalifa feat.

Charlie Puth: "See You Again"“See You Again” was

released off the Furious 7 soundtrack as a tribute to the late Paul Walker. If you have suffered a loss, it’s hard to listen to this song and not get teary eyed. This was definitely the song of the summer that made you feel.

Florence Is Back, and It’s BeautifulBy Mattea McDonald ‘18STAFF WRITER

If you don’t know who Florence + the Machine are, you’ve probably been living under a mainstream radio rock for the past few years. Florence Welch and her band have been wowing audiences in Europe and America alike since 2009 when they caught the eye of the mainstream indie crowd, and have had quite a few major singles like, “Kiss With a Fist,” “Dogs Days Are Over,” and “Shake It Out,” just to name a few. They impressed fans with the ethereal, orchestral feeling of their debut album, Lungs and blew them away with their positive, upbeat sophomore album, Ceremonials. Welch has illustrated her ability to create artistic pieces while sticking to her personal style and feeling. The band has definitely gained a large fanbase since their humble UK beginning in 2007.

You could imagine why fans were a little bummed when Welch announced her 12-month hiatus in mid-2012; they wanted or needed-- more Florence in their lives, as if what they were given wasn’t enough. No one, however could have expected what was to come from that hiatus.

In June of this year, Florence + the Machine came

out with their latest album, How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful, a masterpiece album that brings in orchestral elements of Lungs, while having notes of the positivity from Ceremonials. It’s the love-child of Welch’s previous albums, all wrapped up neatly with a gorgeous bow on top.

But at the same time, this album holds its own. It’s an entire separate entity, while being a fusion of everything Welch has already accomplished.

Welch brings forth an album full of ethereal feeling, while also being blunt and truthful to the listeners. This album is full of life advice, beneath the melodies and orchestral build-ups. It’s a true feminist, coming-of-age-and-finding-yourself album and Welch takes us on a personal journey of self-expression and spirituality.

The album is filled to the brim with not only girl-rock anthems, but softer, quieter ballads. Welch will pump you up and make you want to dance with songs like “Ship to Wreck,” “What Kind of Man,” and “Delilah,” but soothe you with “St. Jude,” “Long & Lost,” and “Caught”. While some of the songs have a more somber tone to them (like “Jude”), others have great, positive

messages to them. If you’re looking for a few songs to keep you perked up during the lousy winter months, “Third Eye” and “Delilah” must find their way onto your playlist. They’re sure to do the trick to get you through a harsh Syracuse winter season.

Not only is Welch a badass female leading a band, but she’s also a true artist. She takes the listener on a journey with every album she produces and, while never observing her process, I’m sure she wonders, “How can I be different and innovative and bring the listener something they might not have heard before?” Not only does Welch take us on a musical journey, she also produces songs that are catchy and will leave you humming all day.

Overall, this new album is a great addition to what Florence + the Machine have already accomplished. It’s an album that will instantly become a favorite and a staple in your music collection. If you haven’t already picked it up, head to your local record store or online to iTunes.

ARTS & LEISURE THE DOLPHINSeptember 10, 2015 3

Fall Movie Preview, Part 1By Seth Montpelier ‘18ARTS & LEISURE EDITOR

Pawn Sacrifice [Sept. 16]: Tobey Maguire stars as Bobby Fischer, the American Chess Legend, as he squares off against the dominating Soviet Union during the Cold War. This “warts and all” portrayal will definitely be worth a look.

Black Mass [Sept. 18]: Johnny Depp, hopefully in a return to form, stars as infamous mobster Whitey Bulger in this gangster thriller.

Sicario [Sept. 18]: Emily Blunt stars as a moral FBI agent, struggling to stay that way in this thriller about drug wars across the Mexican border.

Mississippi Grind [Sept. 25]: Ben Mendelsohn and Ryan Reynolds are gamblers in this casino action flick.

Labyrinth of Lies [Sept. 30]: After WWII, a young German man finds evidence of Nazis that returned to their pre-Third Reich lives after the war. This movie follows his dangerous pursuit of them.

Freeheld [Oct. 2]: Julianne Moore plays a police officer suffering from cancer while fighting to get beneficiary rights for her partner, played by Ellen Page, as the law doesn’t protect homosexuals in this respect. Like About Ray, this movie seems well-

intended, but may be overly emotional. Either way, it’s still worth seeing for yourself.

Steve Jobs [Oct. 9]: Danny Boyle teams up with Aaron Sorkin [who’s better at writing films than TV] to show a portrait of Steve Jobs — the visionary with a cruel side. Hopefully the two don’t make the same mistakes as the Jobs, and show the complexity of the man.

Bridge Of Spies [Oct. 16]: With Spielberg directing and the Coen brothers writing, this Cold War thriller should be any cinephile’s dream come true.

Beasts Of No Nation [Oct. 16]: Idris Elba is an African military commander using child soldiers in this fearless movie directed by True Detective season one director Cary Fukanaga. Anyone with a Netflix account should see it, as it will be released on that platform.

Rock The Kasbah [Oct. 23]: Bill Murray returns to his comedy roots as a washed-up touring agent on a tour in the Middle East.

Extraordinary Tales [Oct. 30]: An animated anthology of various Edgar Allen Poe tales. Poe’s stories should fit the format well, so this is definitely noteworthy.

Top 5 Restaurants in SyracuseBy Sabrina Riley ‘17STAFF WRITER

1. Mother's Cupboard: If you’re on James Street, you may have driven right past this diner thinking it was someones old shed. But like the saying goes, “Don't judge a book by its cover.” From the outside, you wouldn’t expect too much from this tiny restaurant, but

the food portions are massive. Mother's Cupboard is famous for their Frittata Challenge, which consists of six pounds of sausage, pepperoni, broccoli, onions, peppers, and home fries. You probably won’t eat for days if you finish the entire thing, but on the bright side, you will get your picture on the wall...and a free t-shirt. Make sure to get there early for a seat, and of course, go with an empty stomach.

2. Dinosaur BBQ: In the mood for some good barbecue and live music with friends? Then take a ride downtown to Dinosaur BBQ. This Syracuse location is one of 10 locations in the United States. It’s a Southern-style restaurant that serves anything from your traditional barbecue chicken wings to over 10 delicious homemade sides. While you stuff your face with pork ribs, cornbread, mac and cheese, and mashed potatoes

[as if that isn't enough], you’ll have some musical entertainment as well. There

are bands that perform every night during the week [except Sunday], so gather up your friends and show them what Southern cooking is all about.

3. Unique Tea House: Regular tea is boring — but when you add “bubbles”, tea sounds and tastes so much better. The Unique Tea House has over 40 tea flavors to choose from. Once you pick the flavor, the next step is to decide whether or not you want to add bubbles. These aren’t actual bubbles, but rather tapioca

balls that are found at the bottom of your drink. If you think bubble tea sounds cool, you haven't seen the s t r a w s . The straws come in all

different colors that are made specifically for the bubbles to fit through. This little tea house is hidden on Marshall Street

near Syracuse University. You may think you’re in the wrong place when you approach a tattoo parlor, but at the top of the staircase you will find the Unique Tea House.

4. Funk ‘N Waffles: This restaurant was featured on the Food Network's show Diners, Drive-ins, & Dives and after eating here you will know why. Every waffle has its own kind of “funk”, hence its name. There are only two locations, and lucky for us they’re right here in Syracuse. One is located downtown on Clinton Street and the other is on

Syracuse University’s campus. If you want to live on the edge and spice up your choice of waffles, go inside and look at their menu. They have a waffle designed for everyone . . . and you can even make your own.

5. Pastabilities: There’s nothing to make your stomach smile like a classic homemade meal. And if you can’t make it home for your mom’s, Pastabilities Italian food is probably the closest you will get. Everything is made from scratch: from their pasta to their famous Spicy Hot Tomato Oil that you dip your fresh Italian bread into. You will think you’re at your grandma's house for Sunday dinner. And if you don't want to wait until the evening to stop in, the restaurant is also open for lunch [which is served cafeteria style]. So grab a plate

Wes Craven, a treasured filmmaker of horror films that helped shape generations of slasher films, lost his battle with brain cancer on Aug. 30, 2015. The 76 year-old horror aficionado had fallen victim to an enemy of millions. That day marked the loss of a great legend, one whose works continue to influence those with the same passion he had.

The American director played a part in the creation of many well-known films, such as The Nightmare On Elm Street franchise, Scream, The Hills Have Eyes, Cursed, Red Eye, and many other staples to the horror film genre. With ideas so endearing and primitive, Craven flourished in producing works that continue to inspire those who pursue evoking fear in others who crave a scare.

Craven has been accredited to many blockbusters that often break the form of the original classics of this genre. Scream

has often been a source of tongue-in-cheek and self-reflectivity towards the horror within “scary movies.” Craven once said “Horror films don't create fear. They release it.” He continued out his passion for over 40 years.

His compelling work with the “Woodsboro horrors” has produced multiple sequels, and even a spin-off television show on MTV. This aired July 29, 2015, sharing its same name with the original. Scream, the TV series,

has a second season planned for 2016, based on the success of the first season.

Many previous stars of his films posted their condolences to Twitter. Jamie Kennedy who played a major role in the first Scream said, “I [would] have no career if it were not for Wes Craven. Thank you for believing in me and giving me a chance.”

"One of the smartest men I've known. Please say there's a plot twist," said Rose McGowan, another actress who starred in the first Scream film. We hope to keep his legacy alive through the masterpieces he created. From Freddy Krueger, a clawed killer who seeks victims in their sleep, to a vengeful “ghostface,” Wes Craven will continue to inspire--and scare--many generations to come.

THE DOLPHINApril 9, 2015 6 NEWS & FEATURES/ A&LTHE DOLPHINSeptember 10, 2015 6LaCasse Dining Center

Welcomes ChangeBy Rachel Chea ‘17Photo Editor

When students arrived on campus for a new school year, they were welcomed to a new and improved LaCasse Dining Center. Although these changes have been in the works for a while, over the summer the dining center received what students believe to be a much-needed makeover.

Many changes that students see today are a result of the focus groups held last spring, according to General Manager for Sodexo at Le Moyne, Jim Suriano.

“We hope to start what we’re calling a student board of directors — we’re trying to get 10 to 12 students to sit with us once a month to get feedback more readily,” said Suriano.

Some of the recent changes are subtle, while others are obvious. These include changes in the pizza dough recipe, small additions and changes to the salad bar, as well as the introduction of a new Simple Servings station.

Simple Servings was added as an allergy-free station to accommodate students who suffer from the top eight allergens such as soy, wheat, gluten, dairy, shellfish and nuts.

Another new feature is the Choose to Reuse program that was recently launched this week. This program, which does not replace or eliminate the simply to-go meals, allows you to buy a reusable to-go container and mug for $10.

“It’s designed to give you more variety, so that you know you’re getting what you like,” said Suriano. “You’re able to come into the dining hall and fill the container with whatever you want. You don’t have to have a sandwich that is pre-made; you can get a sandwich the way you want it. You can [even] get stir-fry or a slice of pizza.”

Something else that Suriano believes students will really enjoy are the extended brunch hours. Starting the weekend of Sept. 12, weekend brunch will be open until 2:30pm instead of 1:00pm.

Along with the extended hours, starting at noon, burgers and fries will be offered and the 360 grill will also open.

A further addition that will be completed by the Sept. 18 is the Spire 3.0. The Spire 3.0 allows you to mix in flavor shots of Pepsi flavors into your drink. According to Suriano, Le Moyne will be the first college campus in Upstate New York to have one.

So far, the feedback on the changes has been fairly positive.

“I like the changes in the cafe!” said sophomore Megan Daigle. “I think that the salad bar is much better and I also like that they have options for people with food allergies now; I think it’s considerate for our fellow ‘phins.”

“I am really happy with the food options now,” said junior Kristie Breckenridge. “I leave more satisfied than I did when I ate there last year.”

As for something that they think the dining hall can improve on, Daigle stated that one of the major issues is seating, especially during lunch — the busiest time of the day. Breckenridge on the other hand, believes that the sandwich station could still use improvements, stating that sometimes they are never fully satisfying and properly put together.

The question now is, will there be more changes in the future for LaCasse?

“Yes,” said Suriano. “We’re always looking at what we can do to improve. We’re always looking for what makes it better for students; what makes students happier with what we’re doing.”

“Miley, What’s Good?”: The Most Shocking Moments of the 2015

VMAsBy Karissa John ‘17STAFF WRITER

On Sunday Aug. 30 MTV aired its raunchiest award show: The Video Music Awards. Hosted by Miley Cyrus. The show honored 2015’s top music videos, while also giving a special Vanguard award to Kanye West. The VMAs are notorious for their shocking moments — Kanye interrupting Taylor Swift, Britney Spears kissing Madonna — this year was no exception.

So here are the most shocking moments of the 2015 VMAs:

1. Nicki Minaj opened the show with a performance of “Trini Dem Girls” featuring surprise guest, Taylor Swift. This was definitely a surprise to most, seeing as the two had a very public Twitter feud a few weeks prior. Although Minaj and Swift had publically patched things up, seeing Swift appear on stage still managed to make me fall out of my chair. The two sang Minaj’s “The Night is Still Young,” and poked fun at their feud by singing a piece of Swift’s girl fight anthem, “Bad Blood”.

2. Minaj continued to be the star of shocking moments when, while accepting her award for Best Hip-Hop Video, she called out host Miley Cyrus for talking negatively about her to the press. The two brought out the claws, and Cyrus didn’t hesitate to call Minaj out right back. It was a tense and awkward moment for viewers, but Minaj’s line, “Miley, what’s good?” has become a VMA classic and was instantly turned into memes and t-shirts.

3. Kanye West put himself down in the book of VMA memorable moments once again with his “out there” speech while accepting his Vanguard award. He brought up a lot of very big and very different ideas, one of which was that award shows shouldn’t exist because all they do is make extremely successful artists feel like losers. But, what everyone is still talking about was the final moment of his speech when he jokingly announced he would be running for president in 2020. I don’t know about you, but a country run by West wouldn’t be one I would want to live in. But, that could be because I still hate him for what he did to Swift in 2009.

While this year’s VMAs were pretty exciting, I have no doubt that 2015 will seem boring compared to future years. I, for one, cannot wait.

approximately over 500 routers in total. The routers now support the most recent “standard” at 802.11 ac.

According to a recent poll taken at Le Moyne College, 88 percent of 681 undergraduate students feel that they are being well-served by the college's wireless internet access. A random selection of more than half of students in all residential halls were surveyed. This shows a drastic difference in results compared to a survey taken in the Spring of 2015 of a sample of 100 students living in residence halls, where 68 percent of students were unhappy with the wifi system.

Sophomore Kelsey Rich, who previously lived in Dablon Hall and is now residing in Foery Hall believes, “There is definitely a difference in the speed of the wireless internet this year, compared to last. Before I would spend ten minutes just waiting for Gmail to load. Now it is ready to go in seconds.”

Le Moyne’s IT Department, and Director of Campus Life and Leadership, John Haley have refused to comment at this time.

Moments. Our lives are made up of a series of moments [some big, some small]: the click of a coffee lid, the bang of subway doors, the innocent cackle of a toddler staring out the window at the skyline kissing the clouds. These minute spaces of time — they’re everywhere, but if you look away too quickly, they’re gone.

A moment. I can’t remember when I

first fell in love with the City; if it was the idea of making something out of myself in a place filled with millions of people who have the same dreams as me, or that I could exist without being bothered by the looks of misplacement. . . .

Or maybe it was the moments. How every move and every voice seems magnified, to the point where it’s as if all these lives and all these events are happening within me — expanding. Soaking into the pores of my skin until

they seep into my bloodstream.

The city lives, breathes inside of me. I can feel the evening chill wrap its arms around me [although I’m wearing a warm jacket] as the homeless couple breaks down cardboard boxes to make a bed on the park bench. I can see the hassle freckle in his eye when he looks at her as they walk hand in hand through Central Park.

I feel all this walking through the streets of New York; and it’s overwhelming and beautiful and sad. It’s life. And as I breathe in all these moments, I try to silence my mind and appreciate where I am.

Have you ever noticed how life happens, and we just forget to notice? Or we don’t care to. We’re too focused on something else, too busy moving onto the

next thing. My whole life [or for the

majority of my 22 years] I’ve been obsessed with the future. I always felt there had to be something more — that what was happening now couldn’t just be it. And because of my deep seeded need to find what that was, I chose to look past the present.

I had this misconstrued, idealistic image of the future: where I would find faultless love, and always get the job at the end of the interview,

and manage to find consistent happiness with no interruptions of sadness. I thought the future would change everything. That things would be better — I’d be better.

I never valued how things were, and as a result I have bad cases of nostalgia. Thinking about how I could have let him hug me longer, or stopped checking my phone

during lunch with my mom, or tried talking to my Grandpa more even though Alzheimer’s wouldn’t let him remember me.

I wish I stayed in those moments longer.

The future always sounds so nice, but it’s really just this ever-changing moment that you have to keep chasing and chasing. It’s like chasing after the boy [or girl] that refuses to stay for or with you. It’s tiring, and isolating and leaves you a little more hollowed.

I’m done begging someone

Through My Spectacles F r o m N e w Y o r k , W i t h L o v e

to stay. I’m worth more than that — I deserve more.

It took me a while, but I’ve gotten to the point where I can like where I am. And although where I am can sometimes be extremely frustrating, and saddening . . . it’s also incredible, because it’s the present and I don’t know how many more moments I’ll have.

I learned that from New York.

Welcome to the first #DolphinsLiveWell article of the 2015-2016 academic year!

The Wellness Center for Health and Counseling is excited to bring you our weekly column that we hope will educate you and lead you to a healthier lifestyle in mind, body, and spirit. We especially want you to participate in the weekly Healthy Monday tabling outside of the Dining Center from 11:00 am to 1:30 pm on Mondays. You might have noticed us last week introducing you to our services and to our new interns Amibel Tineo and Haley Quinlan, as well as letting you know that we have moved to the second floor of Seton Hall, underscoring our integration with Health Services.

For our new freshmen, we welcome you and hope that your time at Le Moyne will be successful, happy, and healthy! Next Monday on Sept. 14 will be our National Depression Screening Day. You will have the opportunity to not only see Amibel and Haley, but also members of the Psychology Club and the staff of the Counseling Center. We will be asking you to take a few minutes and fill out a questionnaire for us and in return we will have some treats!

Depression and suicide are ever-present on college campuses, including our own. We are aware that more and more students are coming to

college already having been treated for depression and anxiety. A nationwide statistic found by the National Institute of Mental Health reports that 30 percent of college students have reported feeling so depressed in the last year that they can't function. In addition, we also know that many students have had thoughts of suicide at one time or another. While the rate of suicide among college students is lower than that of the general population, somewhere between 6 and 8 percent of college students report having serious suicidal thoughts, and between 1 and 2 percent of students will actually attempt suicide each year. The National Institute of Mental Health estimates that the rate of suicide among college students is about 7.5 per 100,000. The rate for the general population of young people ages 20 to 24 is about 13 per 100,000.

While we know that not everyone who is depressed will think about suicide, we also know that most suicidal people have experienced depression. Our goal is to let you know that there is help available, and that there is hope!

Reach out to a friend, professor, RA, AD, the Wellness Center, or Campus ministry — or anyone on campus whom you trust — we are all here for you. The Le Moyne community wants you to know that YOU ARE NOT ALONE . . . and that Dolphins take care of each other!

I am constantly asked on my blog about my “study secrets.” But the truth is, these “secrets” are often not actual secrets; these are things you already know. I get it. Sometimes you need to hear this type of advice from someone else for it to truly register. I will sum it up for you in one sentence.

Start on day one and don’t stop until you’re done.

It’s a little late for “day one,” but you still have plenty of time to catch up before the semester really starts to kick up. There’s never a bad time to start organizing yourself. Remember; it’s always easier to push yourself to stay ahead than it is to catch up once you’re behind. Sometimes this doesn’t dawn on you until you start feeling the pressure of being behind. But I can tell you right now, I’ve been there. And the time to worry about it is now, not later.

Do you have homework to get done today? As much as you likely want to hang out with your friends or go on the internet after you get out of

class today, resist it. Head to the library, your room, or whatever other place you like to get work done and just do it. At this point in the semester it may seem like you don’t have enough work to where you need to get started right away. However, this is a crucial time that can make or break

your semester. Get into the habit of getting work done right away before it becomes daunting. If you

can do that, procrastination will no longer be your life. Just think of all the free time you will have if you can do this, and how truly relaxing it will be if you have no homework to worry about doing later. If you’re concerned that this will be too overwhelming, try to stick it out for 30 days; establish a habit. You can even use this free printable [scan the QR code below to read on our website for the link] to help you.

But perhaps you’re of the opinion that procrastination is totally fine, and you end up doing well enough regardless. Suit yourself. But think about how much easier studying would be if you didn’t procrastinate. If you kept up with all of your homework the first week, you already have all of week one’s material down. And you still have a few weeks until your first exam to review it rather than struggling to learn week one, week two, week three, and etc. in the last few days before your exam. If you’ve kept up and continue doing so, instead of struggling to have complete knowledge of what you’ll be tested on, you’ll simply be reinforcing what you

already know. No all-nighters or Dunkin’ Donuts required. How relieving is that?

Perhaps the biggest problem here is not the fact that students procrastinate, but rather, the fact that there’s a culture behind procrastination that ends up feeding the habit. We all know the jokes about “getting to it tomorrow.” But the idea that procrastination is just something that everyone does and is expected to do is frankly unhealthy. Equally unhealthy, however, and contrary to popular belief, is the idea that you can never procrastinate. My point here is not to convince you to eliminate procrastination from your life completely. Even the most organized people in your life who seem to be on top of everything procrastinate. Your professors do it, too! So rather than seeing the fact that everyone does it as a reason to be lax about it, recognize that your goal here is to minimize. There’s no reason to stress yourself out about how you can’t completely eliminate your procrastination. Absolutely no one is perfect. Focus instead on maximizing your productivity.

You have it in you, whether you realize it or not. But no amount of motivation will be enough to change your habits. You need to adopt a sense of self-discipline, or else you will be forever relying on outside forces [such as inspirational quotes or looming deadlines] to get anything done. More on this topic next week!

THE DOLPHINApril 9, 2015 9OPINION/NEWS THE DOLPHINSeptember 10, 2015 9

One of the greatest creations of the 21st Century has to be online music sharing websites, right? With apps and playlists like iTunes, Spotify, Google Play, Pandora, and even YouTube, so much music is available to us, right at the tip of our fingers. It’s pretty incredible. There is one thing that seems to be lost, however, thanks to online music shopping, and that would be the creation of an album. I’m not talking about an old vinyl record or a CD; I’m talking about tracks of songs put on some form of media in a specific order by a specific artist. If you think that there isn’t some meaning to the order of the tracks in an album, well, flatly stated, you’re wrong. Now you can download singles off of albums or replay

your favorite radio hit or song you heard in a movie over and over again. But what about the album?

Now, I’m no music snob or music expert or anything like that. I just think that things get lost when albums aren’t listened to straight through (not to say that I’ve never downloaded a single off the internet; my Google Play account is full of them). So I’m going to attempt to bring that back by talking about a few of my album favorites. It’s an art, you know, putting an album together. Only listening to one or two songs off an album would be like looking at only one quarter of a Picasso painting--so much gets lost!

So the first album on the turntable is “Pleased to Meet Me” by The Replacements. I don’t know if I chose this album

because my father introduced it to me and, admittedly, I miss him a little, but regardless of the reason I chose it, it is one of my favorites and a great example of an album. Released in 1987, this album is the definition of alternative rock. Heavy guitars, drums, and great brass accompaniment that give the album a taste of jazz and a little hint of soul. The album starts with songs like” I.O.U.” and “Alex Chilton” that just rock: drums and guitars that make you want to get up and move and the lyrics aren’t so poor either. The middle songs like “I Don’t Know” and “Shooting Dirty Pool” get grungy and roll it back to the band's punk roots, but my favorites on the albums are the final two songs: “Skyway,” which is an acoustic, guitar-picking, soulful song and absolutely beautiful,

and then “Can’t Hardly Wait.” “Can’t Hardly Wait” is just an incredible song--lyrics, music, rhythm. A song about homecoming, it’s the perfect way to end an album.

Next, I would like to introduce the album “Channel Orange,” by Frank Ocean. I’m sure most of you have heard of this one. Ocean’s big hit “Thinkin Bout You” came off of this album, released in 2012. “Channel Orange” is a perfect example of why the creation of an album is an art. The album is infused with tracks like “Start,” “Not Just Money,” “Fertilizer,” and “End” that are sounds and synths or recorded talking--not really traditional “songs,” but important to the album, for sure! Ocean put them in the album for a reason, they’re not just empty space. My favorite song off this album would probably be “Bad Religion,” a piece of work about unrequited love (and who hasn’t felt that ache?). The song is a perfect mix of piano, orchestral instruments, and Ocean’s voice, and it will blow

I was going to write about all of the activities my wife [aka “the boss”] and I had with our five grandkids this summer. For good or bad, the title of this piece brought back memories almost fifty five years old and took me down a different path.

It was the start of fourth grade at Our Lady of Good Counsel Elementary School and Indoctrination Center. The first day of class, Sister Martha Ann assigned us to write an essay of at least two hundred words with

the same title as this one. TWO HUNDRED WORDS!! Why not have me write War and Peace? My parents, as always, were on the teacher’s side. I was given an ultimatum: supper would be waiting for me after the essay was complete. My folks knew how to motivate me. I knew full well there was no appeal, so I got to work. I was done in about thirty minutes. There were erasures, misspellings and some creative grammatical errors, but it was done.

The Old Codger's Corner:How I spent My Summer Vacation

The next day I proudly placed it on my teacher’s desk. Three days later I was blindsided. At the end of the day I was told to remain in class. As my classmates walked out, my parents walked in looking grim. Alarms went off in my head. I frantically wracked my brain for anything I’d done that would get me in trouble. I came up empty. My parents squeezed themselves like contortionists, cramming themselves into desks designed for nine year olds.

This caused a giggle to work its way up to my throat which was instantly halted mid-trachea by a withering glare from dad. Sister Martha Ann reached into her desk and pulled out my vacation essay. Hope springs eternal in the human heart. Maybe this wasn’t a disaster. Maybe my essay showed a genius for writing. Maybe it would get an A+. Maybe she was going to tell my parents that I would be a great writer. It was not to be. I’ve

heard that “the truth shall set you free.” The truth was what got me in trouble. Sister began to read my masterpiece. Varying expressions were given by my parents, none of them pleasant. My essay started when one of my pals had some fireworks left over from July 4th. We decided it would be great fun to take off our model battleships, to an old, nearby canal which all of our parents had declared off limits. This was because “it was a dangerous place to swim.” That didn’t phase us. We put firecrackers in our ship’s smoke stacks, pretended they were fighting and watched them blow up. It was so cool. I also wrote about crossing some railroad tracks to get to our municipal swimming pool. Our parents considered the railroad tracks as dangerous as the canal (we thought they worried too much). It was probably a mistake to have written about the time we shot at streetlights with our slingshots.

As to the watermelon

incident, we didn’t really steal it (two days after that caper we had an attack of conscience and managed to scrape up a dollar in change to leave on our neighbor’s porch).

I explained to Sister and my folks that we didn’t swim in the canal; since no train was coming, it wasn’t dangerous to cross the tracks; we never hit any of the lights with our slingshots; and we paid for the watermelon. It was all in vain. My buddies and I received some serious grounding. To the surprise of teachers and parents all three of us made it to age ten. We had other summer adventures, but none like this one. Of course the summer we turned sixteen was really special, and another story….

you out of the water or make you want to drink an entire bottle of wine--or both!

The last album I want to introduce is “Bad Self Portraits”(BSP) by Lake Street Dive (my current go-to band). First off, let me say, if you haven’t heard of this band yet, just wait. I promise you that they will be large and in charge very soon. BSP was released in 2014 as the third studio album for Lake Street Dive. This album strays from their original sound, which was heavily jazz influenced. But this album has it all: the jazz, the blues, the rock, the pop. If you’re into it, it’s probably on BSP. The album opens with the title track and it is a JAM, a song about a camera and a breakup and it is simply genius. My favorite song off of BSP would be “Just Ask,” a true testament to the talent of the lead singer, Rachael Price, who can belt it out, and yet another heart-wrenching number about the perils of love. BSP is an all around great album that I would recommend to just about

anyone. A l b u m s

are important to the music industry, and even though it’s easy (and cheaper) to buy that cool single you heard the other day in a coffee shop, maybe next time check out the album the single is on--you never know what you could be missing!

CHEERS AND JEERS By Tom Vazquez '16

THE DOLPHINSeptember 10, 201512

Well, it’s official. The fate of the Cheers and Jeers column is now in my hands. As the saying goes, “It can only go down from here.” I’m paraphrasing, of course. To President LeMura and all faculty at Le Moyne College, distinguished guests, students, friends of friends, overbearing family members, and strangers: I welcome you to the beginning of the end. [See what I did there? See how in the very first issue of Cheers and Jeers I referenced the beginning, but did so by referencing the end by using not only a commencement address but the beginning of it. . . ?]

Forget it. Read at your own peril.

1 Cheer: The New York State Fair

I didn’t plan on going to the great New York State Fair this year. In fact, I didn’t want to. The downward trends continue: the butter sculpture gets simpler, people get drunker earlier, more people are opting for motorized scooters, and kids have leashes. It’s an outdoor casino. So why did I go? Because you have to. If you’ve never been, I hope you had a chance to go. There must be something in the water because I keep getting sick and going back.

2 Cheers: The New Le Moyne WebsiteLe Moyne College’s home website was long overdue

for some sprucing up, and having recently viewed the new additions in media layout and overall “wow” factor, the website gets two cheers from me. I still can’t figure out how to find anything, and I managed to find a few links to some clubs that were seriously outdated, but what’s the harm? Somewhere an 80-year-old is thrilled to still be listed as the president of the book club.

3 Cheers: ExperienceWhoever said getting older was all bad clearly

hasn’t read the side of a Chipotle to-go bag. Age translates into experience [hopefully], and with this experience I now know that you can’t get a parking spot if you show up to campus after 9:30 a.m. I know how to shimmy through the hallway connecting Grewen and the Science Center that was made for stick figures. And I know that if you sit alone in the Den at a table made for six, you will not make friends. Cheers to lessons learned!

1 Jeer: The C StoreAccording to the Le Moyne website, the

college has an enrollment of about 2,800 students. Not huge, but quite a few bodies all the same. Now, I understand that space is limited, but the C Store is the about the size of a downsized Smart Car. Many a time I have walked into the back corner of the store only to turn around and find myself hopelessly trapped, one hand in the sushi, the other awkwardly in someone’s backpack. I just wanted a sandwich.

2 Jeers: ConstructionI have to give the construction crews credit

for being so courteous to students as we barge through doors and threaten to topple the ladders they’re precariously perched on. But didn’t they have an entire summer to do whatever it is they’ve been doing? The other day I saw a guy on a ladder, someone holding said ladder, and then someone stabilizing the guy stabilizing the ladder. Really?

3 Jeers: Donald TrumpWhen Trump declared he was

running for president, someone told me it was just an effort to get some good publicity. Really? Because in the last four weeks, Trump’s lost huge sponsors. Macy’s dumped him, ESPN said goodbye, and NBCUniversal took a hike, to name a few. For a successful billionaire businessman, he’s making million [maybe billion] dollar mistakes. Solution? Duct tape him to the next craft NASA sends to Mars. Either he’ll colonize the place or we’ll never hear from him again. Win-win.
