I doubt if our kids know what an apron is. Theprinciple use of grandma’s apron was to protect the dress underneath, beause she only had a few. It was also because it was easier to wash aprons than dresses and aprons used less material.
But along with that, it served as a potholder forremoving hot pans from the oven. It was wonderful for drying children’s tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning dirty ears.
From the chicken coop, the apron was used forcarrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be ! nished in the warming oven.
When the weather was cold Grandma wrapped itaround her arms. Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow. Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron
From the garden, it carried all sorts of veggies. In the fall the apron was used to bring applesthat had fallen from the trees.
It will be a long time before somone invents something that will replace that ‘old-time apron’ that served so many, so well.
Forget what you think you know about memory lossand old age. It is usually not inevitable. So why do so many people say, “My memory isn’t what it used to be,” or “I’m having a senior moment?” Stress, anxiety, andmental overload are most likely responsible. “Stopmulti-tasking,” says Professor Brangman, who is divi-sion chief and geratric medicine director at the CentralNew York Alzheimer’s Disease Center, University ofSyracuse. “Our brains are made for us to do one thingat a time.” Multi-tasking overloads the brain so people aren’t remembering things and get concerned they arehaving memory problems. Doing the things that keep your heart healthy will also keep your brain healthy. “ e same blood vessels that go to the heart branch o and go to the brain. Exercise, control your blood pres-sure, quit smoking, and if you have diabetes, keep it under contol.” Staying mentally active is as important as staying physically active, says Raymond L. Crowel, PsyD. vice president for mental health and substance abuse services for Mental Health America in Alexan-dria, Va. Join a book club, stay up on current events, engage in stimulating conversations and do crossword puzzles. ey are absorbing and require a tremendous amount of concentration, and there’s a lot of satisfac-tion in getting it right.
When you reach for the stars you may not quite get one, but you won’t come up with a handfull of mud either. Leo Burnett (1891-1971) Advertising Executive
