From the Artistic Directors

David ArmstrongExecutive Producer and Artistic Director

The 5th Avenue Theatre

The new musical that you are about to see is the result of a unique collaboration between two of Seattle’s leading not-for-profit theater companies: ACT–A Contemporary Theatre and The 5th Avenue Theatre. As was the case with last year’s co-production of the musical Vanities, First Date is being jointly produced and presented as part of both theaters’ subscription seasons.

This collaboration provides each organization with the opportunity to fulfill artistic goals that would be difficult for us to accomplish outside of this creative partnership. It allows The 5th Avenue the chance to bring to our audience some of the many wonderful, smaller-scale musicals that would not be a good fit for our home theater, and it allows ACT the opportunity to include musical theater in its programming on a regular basis.

Perhaps most importantly, the collaboration provides both theaters the chance to facilitate and guide the world premiere of a new musical—and new works have long been at the center of our theaters’ artistic missions.

Since its founding in 1965, ACT has been an incubator for the creation of new plays with many notable successes over the years, including Lonely Planet, First Class, Mitzi’s Abortion, and Becky’s New Car, which has gone on to more than 20 productions.

This coming season alone ACT will feature three world premiere productions!

The 5th Avenue Theatre is acclaimed as one of the nation’s most significant producers and developers of new musicals. During the past decade, The 5th has produced 14 new musicals, five of which have moved on to Broadway, and two of which have received the Tony Award for Best Musical including the current Broadway hit Memphis. Memphis will soon play its 1,000th performance in New York and was recently televised on PBS’s Great Performances.

None of this would be possible without enthusiastic audiences and generous donors who love and support new work, and who are eager to explore new theatrical territory and experience the thrill of creation. We are extremely fortunate to be making theater here in Seattle—one of America’s great theater centers—and we are very excited for you to see what the amazingly talented artists behind this new musical have created.

Recently, Albert Evans, The 5th Avenue Theatre’s Artistic and Music Associate, sat down with Ian Eisendrath.

ALBERT: Ian, you’ve been the music supervisor at The 5th Avenue for several years, but now you have a new position added to your job title: The 5th Avenue Theatre Alhadeff Family Director of New Works. Tell us about that.

IAN: The 5th Avenue has been intimately involved with the development and presentation of new work over the past decade. We have partnered with outside producers to develop and present numerous shows for our mainstage, such as Hairspray, The Wedding Singer, Memphis, Aladdin, Catch Me If You Can, and A Christmas Story. And we’re in the second year of a fruitful partnership with ACT Theatre, combining our resources to co-produce smaller-scaled shows — shows that might be lost on the 5th Avenue stage. First Date is this year’s co-production.

And now the launch of the New Works program will enable us to support and encourage writers at every stage of the creative process — from initial idea through production.

How do you envision this happening?

One of our major goals is to build a program that is fluid and flexible, able to respond to the specific needs of each piece. For example, we’re working with a three-person writing team from LA. The book writer approached a composer and a lyricist with a great idea for a new musical. All three lead busy lives with a lot of distractions. What we determined they needed was to get in a room together and hash out how they are going to tell this story, where characters might sing, etc. So, for them, we are hosting a week-long writers’ retreat in a quiet, serene environment where they will be provided with writing materials, meals, and artistic support. Of course that’s just one example.

And what about projects that are further along?

Well, musical theater is a highly collaborative art form — a show cannot be created in a vacuum. As soon as a draft is complete — and even sometimes before — it is vital to see and hear your work being rehearsed and performed by actors. You don’t know what you have ‘til you see and hear other people performing it.

Later this spring, we look forward to presenting a staged reading of a new musical, with actors reading from scripts and scores at music stands, accompanied by a pianist. For a project that’s further along, we might host a more involved workshop: one or two weeks of rehearsal, at the end of which the piece would be memorized and presented with a certain amount of stage movement and interaction. Depending on the style of the music, we might add one or two musicians — a rock score might need a drummer.

Readings and workshops tend to be the most refining process for any new musical. Brilliant new songs, new scenes and major changes to the show often happen during the reading and workshop process.

How much will this cost the writers?

Nothing. This program is funded by grants and gifts to The 5th Avenue. So the creators will be free to create, unburdened by the need to raise money to rent rehearsal space, hire actors and musicians, and cover all the other related costs. Even copying music and scripts can strain the budgets of struggling authors!

Sounds great. So, what is the typical path a new musical takes from idea to realization? Suppose I’m a playwright who wants to write a musical about, oh . . . Joan of Arc. How do I get the project started?

Unless you happen to be one of those rare writers who does book, music, and lyrics, you have to find collaborators who share your enthusiasm. If you’re writing the book — the script — you need a composer and a lyricist. Typically, you don’t work in isolation. You all sit down in a room and talk about the style. Is it a serious drama or a spoof? Will the music sound like 15th century France (to use your Joan of Arc example) or today? How will the story be told — will the style be naturalism or heightened fantasy? How many actors do you need to tell the story? How will you deal with the burning-at-the-stake problem?

Is it a good idea to get a producer involved early on?

Sometimes. Producers can be very helpful in bringing together a larger creative team: director, choreographer, designers (who may have a brilliant solution to the burning-at-the-stake), music director, musical arrangers, and so on.

But first you should have at least an outline and a few songs so that people can grasp your vision.

And oftentimes, the producer has the initial idea and assembles a creative team to realize it. In that case, different teams of writers may be asked to submit a bit of script and a few songs on spec. The producer chooses the team to bring his or her vision to the stage, and usually a director is brought on board early in the process to serve as the artistic leader.

Whatever the path, a musical is a collaboration every step of the way. Anyone who doesn’t enjoy working with other people and exposing themselves and their work to the refining process that every musical must undergo really should consider another field. But for those of us who love collaborating, there’s nothing more satisfying than working with a team of passionate artists to create a new musical.

So I guess you like your job?

I do. I’m thrilled.

*Support provided through in-kind contributions

ACT gratefully recognizes the following corporations, foundations, and government agencies for their generous support of our 2011 & 2012 programs. Without such tremendous community support, ACT would not be able to offer outstanding contemporary theatre, in-school educational programming, or community based outreach.

This list reflects community giving from January 1, 2011 through December 31, 2011.

The act Legacy society honors those

who remember ACT in their wills or other

estate plans. Legacy Society members ensure

ACT’s ongoing tradition of presenting the

best of contemporary theatre for future generations. Even persons

of modest means can make significant future gifts by using tax-

advantaged estate and financial planning techniques. Notify ACT

of your arrangements by calling (206) 292-7660 ext. 1321.

Welcome to The 5th Avenue Theatre

A beautiful and unique Seattle landmark, The 5th Avenue Theatre’s breathtaking design was inspired by ancient Imperial China’s most stunning architectural achievements, including the magnificent Forbidden City. Built in 1926 for vaudeville and silent pictures, The 5th Avenue reigned for decades as Seattle’s favorite movie palace.

In 1979, forty-three companies and community leaders formed the non-profit 5th Avenue Theatre Association. Their goal was to restore the Theatre to its original splendor. A $2.6 million restoration was accomplished without any public funding from federal, state or city sources. The 5th Avenue re-opened in 1980 as Seattle’s premier home for national touring shows.
