I see it nearly every day. You dont believe me, do you? Well, you see it happen, too. I see it when my friend calls to say that her son has been cleanfor a year. I see it in RCIA. When inquirers come in with questions that have bugged them for years—worshipping statues or is it really the Body of Christ? We eat and pray together. We talk about how God is working in our lives. We form a community of believers. And then it clicks when Easter Vigil comes. I see the smiles and happiness when the water of Baptism is poured over their heads. I see them turn around and embrace their sponsor or their family. I see it when a worried mother comes into my office, crying when she talks about her children. Maybe theyve been bullied in school. Maybe they arent going to church anymore. I cant offer much, a listening ear at best. But I always give them time to talk it out, and I always make them laugh. That s my goal: leave them laughing. And when they do leave, their eyes almost always have a little hope glimmering in them. We see miracles every day, all of us. Maybe they arent as dramatic as a dead man walking, but we see them. Just yesterday I saw my daffodils popping out of the dead winter ground. Thats a miracle, right there. Lets learn from this old Hindu poem: A child whispered, God, speak to meAnd a meadowlark sang. The child did not hear. So the child yelled, God, speak to me!And the thunder rolled across the sky but the child did not listen. The child looked around and said, God, let me see youand a star shone brightly. but the child did not notice. And the child shouted, God, show me a miracle! And a life was born but the child did not know. So the child cried out in despair, Touch me, God, and let me know you are here! Whereupon God reached down And touched the child. But the child brushed the butterfly away And walked away unknowingly. PARISH DINNER TODAY!! John 11: 1-45 Have you ever seen someone come back from the dead? I have. More about that later. But in the meantime… Today Jesus finds out that his friend Lazarus is ill. He travels to Bethany, telling

his disciples, “Our friend Lazarus is asleep, but I am going to awaken him.” Jesus, buddy, the guy is dead. Give it up.

But, Jesus has a mission. He wants his disciples to believe. So, he makes his way to the home of his beloved friends, Martha and Mary, who have lost their brother. They are grieving, sure that Lazarus would not have died if Jesus had arrived on time.

Jesus goes to the tomb, thanks his Father, and says, “Lazarus, come out.” To the shock and, most likely, disbelief of the onlookers, Lazarus walks out of

the tomb. They have seen a dead man come back to life. All miracles are amazing, but this one takes the number one spot.

Oh, yeah. You’re probably wondering about me seeing someone come back from the dead. I see it nearly every day. You don’t believe me, do you? Well, you see it happen, too.

I see it when my friend calls to say that her son has been “clean” for a year. That the addiction that kept his life in turmoil, kept her worried and confused, no longer had a hold on him. I saw that dead look in his eyes be replaced with the promise of better choices.

Maybe they’ve been bullied in school. Maybe they aren’t going to church anymore. I can’t offer much, a listening ear at best. But I always give them time to talk it out, and I always make them laugh. That’s my goal: leave them laughing. And when they do leave, their eyes almost always have a little hope glimmering in them.

We see miracles every day, all of us. Maybe they aren’t as dramatic as a dead man walking, but we see them. Just yesterday I saw my daffodils popping out of the dead winter ground. That’s a miracle, right there.

Let’s learn from this old Hindu poem:

A child whispered, “God, speak to me” And a meadowlark sang. The child did not hear. So the child yelled, “God, speak to me!” And the thunder rolled across the sky but the child did not listen. The child looked around and said, “God, let me see you” and a star shone brightly. but the child did not notice. And the child shouted, “God, show me a miracle!” And a life was born but the child did not know. So the child cried out in despair, “Touch me, God, and let me know you are here!” Whereupon God reached down And touched the child. But the child brushed the butterfly away And walked away unknowingly.

SAINT OF THE WEEK Facts

Feast day: March 17 Patron of Ireland

Birth: 387 Death: 461

St. Patrick of Ireland is one of the world's most popular saints. He was born in Roman Britain and when he was fourteen or so, he was captured by Irish pirates during a raiding party and taken to Ireland as a slave to herd and tend sheep. At the time, Ireland was a land of Druids and pagans, but Patrick turned to God and wrote his memoir, The Confession. In The Confession, he wrote: "The love of God and his fear grew in me more and more, as did

the faith, and my soul was rosed, so that, in a single day, I have said as many as a hundred prayers and in the night, nearly the same. I prayed in the woods and on the mountain, even before dawn. I felt no hurt from the snow or ice or rain."

Patrick's captivity lasted until he was twenty, when he escaped after having a dream from God in which he was told to leave Ireland by going to the coast. There he found some sailors who took him back to Britain and was reunited with his family.

A few years after returning home, Patrick saw a vision he described in his memoir:

"I saw a man coming, as it were from Ireland. His name was Victoricus, and he carried many letters, and he gave me one of them. I read the heading: 'The Voice of the Irish.' As I began the letter, I imagined in that moment that I heard the voice of those very people who were near the wood of Foclut, which is beside the western sea-and they cried out, as with one voice: 'We appeal to you, holy servant boy, to come and walk among us.'"

The vision prompted his studies for the priesthood. He was ordained by St. Germanus, the Bishop of Auxerre, whom he had studied under for years, and was later ordained a bishop and sent to take the Gospel to Ireland.

Patrick arrived in Slane, Ireland, on March 25, 433. There are several legends about what happened next, with the most prominent claiming he met the chieftan of one of the druid tribes, who tried to kill him. After an intervention from God, Patrick was able to convert the chieftain and preach the Gospel throughout Ireland. There, he converted many people -eventually thousands - and he began building churches across the country.

He often used shamrocks to explain the Holy Trinity and entire kingdoms were eventually converted to Christianity after hearing Patrick's message.

Patrick preached and converted all of Ireland for 40 years. He worked many miracles and wrote of his love for God in Confessions. After years of living in poverty, traveling and enduring much suffering he died March 17, 461.

He died at Saul, where he had built the first Irish church. He is believed to be buried in Down Cathedral, Downpatrick. His grave was marked in 1990 with a granite stone.

In His Footsteps: Patrick was a humble, pious, gentle man, whose love and total devotion to and

trust in God should be a shining example to each of us. So complete was his trust in God, and of the importance of his mission, he feared nothing -not even death.

"The Breastplate," Patrick's poem of faith and trust in God: "Christ be within me, Christ behind me, Christ before me, Christ beside me,

Christ to win me, Christ to comfort and restore me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ inquired, Christ in danger, Christ in hearts of all that love me, Christ in mouth of friend and stranger."

Dear Padre March 13, 2016

Serving the whole flock in a diverse parish How do we serve

everyone in a culturally

diverse parish?

In the past it was common

to have parishes dedicated to

different ethnic groups where

such populations were concentrated. In 2010, the

U.S. bishops found that 33

percent of all U.S. parishes

were culturally diverse, and

that’s perhaps using a narrow

understanding of diversity.

Then in 2014, they published

Best Practices for Shared

Parishes: So That They May

All Be One, in which they

outline a nine-movement

process for creating an inclusive parish. The fact that

there are nine movements is

notable. It means that we

slowly move toward

inclusiveness; we don’t simply

start a Spanish Mass and

think the job is done.

I recently worked in a small

parish in the Mississippi Delta.

In this parish there is a Mass

at 9 am that reflects the worship

style of a group of African Americans. Another Mass at

11 celebrates a more

traditional Catholic service.

The Mass at 6 pm is in

Spanish. No one is limited to

any one service, but each

service reflects a style that

different ethnic groups are

more comfortable with.

Then there is Rosemary, an Italian-American whose family has lived in the area since the beginning of the nineteenth century. Rosemary is the volunteer director of education. She attends every Mass, welcoming people and making them feel at home. Welcoming is the first

movement toward serving everyone in a diverse parish.
