12 year old Jacob has been facing some health issues for almost a year. He changed overnight from being a happy child at home and school, was social and athletic to being a child with an unexplained “mental illness. Jacob has gone through many tests, hospitals and doctors and has had many different diagnoses along the way, but Jacob

never improved. Theresa & Wayne Fletcher (Jacob’s parents) felt as though most of the diagnoses weren’t correct.

Well Jacob has finally been diagnosed with PANDAS which stands for Pediatric

Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal infections. What this means is that antibodies were mistakenly attacking the basal ganglia (part of the brain) rather than the intended streptococcal bacteria, this triggered his movement

disorder, sudden onset of OCD and tic disorders.

The treatment that Jacob is undergoing is IVIG. In P.A.N.D.A.S, IVIG reduces symptoms. IVIG is offered to children in a clinical environment – but is often not

covered by insurance and is expensive. This benefit is to help raise money that will be used for Jacob’s medical

expenses not covered by insurance.
