    DEADLINE - DECEMBER 31, 2014

    Call for Papers

Communalis(Communication and Natural Logic International Society) is organizing itsFifth Colloquium "Discourse, Representations, Argumentation," which will be hosted bythe "Alexandru Ioan Cuza" University of Iasi (Romania) on October 22-23, 2015. Theconference theme is "Contemporary Public Discourse: Semiological, Argumentative andRhetorical New Models".

The tradition of studying public discourse is very old and has been developed sinceGreek and Roman ancient times. The development of oratory, which provided consistentspeech models (Demosthenes and Cicero are only the most famous examples), theconstruction of rhetoric as an explanation for the effectiveness of public discourse and

the art of public speaking, in addition to the ancient rhetorical treatises that are still a richsource of inspiration, are evidence of the importance of public discourse in democraticculture.

The old tradition of public discourse was developed and expanded along modernity.Later, it multiplied various forms of manifestation of this type of discourse under thebeneficial influence of technical innovations (that enhanced media public discoursetransmission). In the last decades, the transmission model was questioned and theexpansion of new collaborative technologies such as social networks that make use ofthe Internet changed completely the way we think about public discourse. At the sametime, research on public discourse was further developed under the impact of logical,

linguistic, semiotic, and psychological studies, that influenced how rhetoric, as art ofpublic speaking, is understood today.

The purpose of this colloquium is to bring to the fore new interpretations of publicdiscourse, to examine recent studies highlighting how - and why - public discourse isbecoming so pervasive, and to identify lines of continuity or rupture between therhetorical tradition and breakthrough developments that seem to defy the somewhat"sacred" traditions that inspired contemporaneity. This theme is open to various lines of
