PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Walkathon 2016Walkathon 2016Walkathon 2016Walkathon 2016 WALKATHON FRIDAY, 16 th SEPTEMBER It has become a wonderful tradition to hold a walkathon as the major fundraiser for the year. Students walk along Lighthouse Beach from the surf club to Lake Cathie. At the end of the walk students have a BBQ at the lake with some time to socialise and relax. Students seek sponsorship or a donation for the 10 kilometre walk and all funds raised go towards the school. Throughout the year we support many charities and get involved in a number of community activities. The walkathon directs money to school funds for particular resources which have been suggested by the students. The SRC over the years have had various suggestions which were all taken from the student body. We have tried to spread the funds over various areas of the school. Listed below are the results of fundraising over the last three years.

• Artificial grass and new seating in the water fountain area • Electric hand dryers in the amenities • Long jump pit • Vege garden • Cricket nets • Gym equipment • New lockers • New tables and seating in the playground • Netball posts • Drum kit • Tiffany drums and musical equipment • New sport equipment • Orchestral Xylophone • Screens for Drama • Outdoor PA system • Drums for Drumline • Grand piano and lights for PAC • Archery equipment • Music stands for performances • New sets of football jerseys and representative sport attire • New camp equipment for Year 8 camp • More seating for outdoor areas • 4.5 metre remote control screen for data projection in the hall • A huge area of improvement which has been resourced by Walkathon funds is the area of technology.

All rooms have data projectors with wireless keyboard, interactive whiteboard, speakers and internet access.

I urge all parents and students to support our Year 7-10 walkathon. Normal lessons will be held for senior students on this day.

CONGRATULATIONS AND THANK YOU Sincere thanks and congratulations to the host families of our billets from Handa, Japan. The students were most grateful to you all and I congratulate you on your generosity; they were blessed to be in your households and share some time with your family. PARENT NIGHT 31 st AUGUST Due to the success of our parent workshop with Sara Phillips last term we are planning a follow up where we take up the suggestions noted by parents who attended. Parenting is the most important job we have so it is a great idea to work with others who have the same career! I encourage parents to take note of the date and consider attending the workshop this term on emotional intelligence, mindfulness, problem-solving with teens, setting boundaries and screen time for teenagers.

SOCIAL JUSTICE AWARENESS DAY NEWS HIROSHIMA DAY This week, our College community commemorated Hiroshima Day as part of the inaugural social justice program which is being held in our school this year. Each year, 6th August marks Hiroshima day. On this annual anniversary, we remember the day in 1945 when an atomic bomb was dropped on the Japanese city of Hiroshima, followed a few days later by another dropped on the city of Nagasaki. The bombings effectively ended World War II by bringing about the surrender of Japan, but at a terrible expense – the two cities were destroyed and casualties, mostly civilians, were estimated at around 200,000 with many more people dying later from injuries and illness. Hiroshima Day is now a focus for anti-war and anti-nuclear discussions and demonstrations. In our PC classes, students and teachers considered the importance of this day through a prayer thanking God for those who survived as they play an important role in sharing the story of what occurred. Together, we prayed for strength through Jesus Christ, that He may unite us all in harmony, that He may calm our anxieties and that He may help us to overcome conflict peacefully. Additionally, we reflected on the importance of this day through a picture book titled My Hiroshima, authored and illustrated by Junko Morimoto. The picture book memoir describes what happened on 6th August, 1945 through a child’s perspective and is accompanied by delicate Japanese-style watercolours and photographs. It was a highly evocative and meaningful book for both staff and students. Hiroshima Day was a highly important day for our College community. Our next and final social justice day for the year occurs on 25th November in Term 4: “White Ribbon Day” Sarah Smith Teachers’ Aide

YEAR 12 NEWS GRADUATION DINNER Just a reminder that this is on Friday, 11th November. Students were issued a written note providing the relevant details including costs, purchase of tickets etc. and this was also emailed to all students as a back-up. As per last week’s newsletter, I am forming a committee of interested and available parents to organise the decorations needed. Those who wish to participate in this essential group can either return the slip at the bottom of the note issued to students or contact the College directly. The first meeting will be 6.00p.m. Wednesday, 17th August in our senior library. JUMP FOR JUSTICE IN JULY OUT OF UNIFORM DAY This was a highly successful day organised by Mrs Nicole Bailey and her Legal Studies students last Friday - students and staff were encouraged to wear jeans and jumpers and donate $2. We raised just over $500 which will be available to local victims of domestic violence so they can access some legal advice. A “Go Fund Me Page” will soon be set up to continue to support this worthy cause – more information in a few weeks.

YEAR 8 NEWS

YEAR 8 CAMP PREPARATION is underway! A letter to parents outlining the nature of this camp was distributed last week to students. Please return completed medical forms to me as soon as possible. Students are required to make a formal ‘Tent Group Request’ to me. These requests aim to organise all the individuals who plan to share a tent during camp. Students are asked to form groups of three or four in tents with one student being able to provide a four-man tent. Tent groups can only be finalised once every medical form has been submitted. Every Year 8 student was sent information via email about Year 9 elective choices for 2017. Students were encouraged to download this information and discuss it with parents to make the best choices for their next two years of study. Students must consider six subjects in order of preference. Both parents and students are urged to attend the Year 9 2017 Elective Information Night this coming Monday, 8th August in the junior MPC at 6.00p.m. On the night, families will receive a personalised Subject Selection Form to complete and submit to Mr Adam Kelly from Tuesday, 9th August. PDHPE A Year 8 PDHPE task has been distributed to students and will be completed in class on Thursday, 18th August or Friday, 19th August. Please be aware that it is about abuse, in particular family violence. YEAR 7 NEWS MASS AND REFLECTION DAY On Monday, Year 7 will join their ‘family and significant others’ to celebrate Mass together at St Agnes’ Parish Church in Hay Street at 9.30a.m. This is a very important celebration in our school calendar for Year 7, and it is an opportunity for students to reflect on the relationships they have with the most important people in their lives. We thank you in advance for your support in joining us. Students are reminded that they should wear full winter school uniform on Monday, and that they are to bring in their sport’s uniform to change into (if they are required to) after we return from Mass. WELL DONE The Year 7/8 All Schools Touch competition was held last Thursday. By all accounts it was a fantastic day with the students showing school spirit, sportsmanship and courage as they played throughout the day. Unfortunately the girls did not progress, but one of the boys’ team were able to progress to the next competition. Regardless of the outcome, all students should be proud of their achievements on the day. Congratulations to the following Year 7 students who participated on the day: Shanaye Brown, Daniel Cheeseman, Sophie Evans, Kate Field, Kade Franklin , Sarah Hatherly, Jared Humphreys, Jasmine Hyde, Corey Lewis, Vaughan Lickley, Jordyn McAnally , Maddison McKee, Tiana Myers, Tom Nunan, Jacob Prince, Benjamin Stewart, Emma Rooney, Ava Sinclair, Breanna Smedley, Petrea Spencer, Luke Townsend, Tamika Vogele and Mia Wilbow . GEOGRAPHY NEWS CAIRNS GEOGRAPHY EXCURSION 2016 At the end of Term 2, 32 Year 11 Geography students, Mrs Katrina Hayes, Ms Georgina Pender and Mr Andrew Evans travelled to Cairns. This excursion focused on providing students with a firsthand understanding of all mandatory topics covered in both the Preliminary and HSC Geography courses. The group began their field study with a guided two day tour of the Atherton tablelands by ‘On the Wallaby Tours’. This tour involved exploring the magical rainforest environments, swimming in crater lakes and waterfalls, cycling through the hinterland and spotting platypus and tree kangaroos in their natural environment. We also had the opportunity to visit a local tourist and business operation Gallo Dairyland.

From the tablelands we travelled north into the Wet Tropics Rainforest and World Heritage listed Daintree. Students firstly explored the crystal-clear and very cold waters of the Mossman Gorge cascading over granite boulders and the watering holes surrounded by lush green rainforest. For the next two days we were given guided tours of the Daintree, where we zip lined our way through the rainforest canopy with Daintree Jungle surfing and swam at Cape Tribulation where the rainforest meets the reef. The students studied the workings of this 240 million year old rainforest ecosystem and examined the intricate connection between the rainforest and the reef. A highlight of the excursion was the half day trip to the Great Barrier Reef aboard the Ocean Safari raft that gave us an exhilarating ride to the Mackay reef where we snorkelled with turtles, colourful fish and saw an amazing variety of corals. During the trip the students were given the opportunity to learn about the Indigenous connection with the rainforest and reef environments. One highly educational experience was learning traditional hunting and gathering methods. This included spear fishing and mud crabbing techniques. The group toured Hartley’s Crocodile and Wildlife Park where they enjoyed entertaining and educational wildlife presentations, getting up close to some very large crocs and other native species. The final day of our excursion involved an urban study tour of Cairns, learning about its original discovery and subsequent development. The students representing our school were outstanding ambassadors. Their respect for each other and the guides was impressive. I am confident that the experiences on this trip have appreciably enhanced their understanding of these environments and have given them significant insights into the importance of these natural wonders and the role that we play in protecting and enhancing them.

REPRESENTATIVE SPORT RESULTS: Bill Turner Cup Soccer – Boys In a highly entertaining contest on Wednesday, the boys’ Bill Turner Cup campaign concluded with a hard-fought narrow loss to Bishop Druitt College, Coffs Harbour. This was round 6 of the competition which doubled as the Mid North Coast final. When the full-time whistle sounded, the score was locked at 1-1, with our goal being scored by Lachlan Clacher. After a period of extra time where players were removed from each team every five minutes, there was still no change to the deadlock. A penalty shootout then took place where fist pumping, gasps and elevated heart rates were shared between the players and the large group of spectators, especially coach, Dom Ashe. Unfortunately for MacKillop College, Bishop Druitt prevailed with an 8-7 score in the penalty shootout. It was a tough way for the boys to finish but they should be justly proud of their performance and overall conduct. Best on the day was judged to be Jyal Tregier whose defensive efforts were first class. A special mention must go to our keeper Marraki Kilpatrick , who gallantly defended all day. Well done to the squad and thank you to Mr Dom Ashe for your efforts with coaching in 2016. Bill Turner Squad: Robert Cameron, Lachlan Clacher, Lachlan Darrington , Flynn Goodman, Declan Harrison, Samuel Hazelton Kelly, Ambrose Humphreys, Marraki Kilpatrick , Quinn Lickley , Bailey Richmond, Nicholas Rooney, Andrew Stocks, Samuel Thompson, Luke Townsend, Jyal Tregier, Jasper Williams and Wilson Harries. Paul Robins Assistant Coach Taree Interschool Horse Sports Competition Last Friday three students from MacKillop College travelled to Taree Showground to compete in the horse sports competition hosted by St Clare’s High School. Our horse riding team comprised of Makailah Jessop-Ryan (Year 12), Jade Attard (Year 9) and Mollie Kennedy (Year 9) and they competed amongst 120 other riders in a variety of flatwork and sporting events. For these riders it was a fantastic opportunity to represent their school in this type of competition and they were outstanding ambassadors and sportswomen. Makailah, in her final year, competed in the 17 years age group on her new horse. She displayed her significant talents in the flatwork events placing 5th in the Novice 2.2 Dressage from a large field of riders. Jade competed in the 16 year division, had a great day and demonstrated her talents as a horse rider. In every event she displayed significant improvement and was unlucky not to place in her sporting races. Mollie rode in the very competitive 15 years division and had an outstanding day. Her results were 1st Rider, 2nd Hack, 2nd Bareback, 3rd Pleasure Hack, 3rd Dressage, 1st Scuddahoe, 2nd Barrel and Ball race. These results saw Mollie earn the highest points in her age group and she was awarded the overall Champion 15 years point score. Overall it was a wonderful day; the girls displayed many outstanding riding skills and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. I congratulate them on their hard work and efforts in their preparation for the event and thank their parents and family members for their support and assistance on the day.

Years 7/8 Touch Football B Team After a number of selections trials and training runs, the girls headed off to Taree on Thursday, 28th July for the All Schools Touch Tournament. The girls’ B team were in a tough draw with the defending State Champions, Tomaree High School, first up. The girls played well but were out-classed by a much bigger, stronger and well-drilled team. In game 2 we came up against the Regional B team which was a great game and the score ended up with a 1-1 draw. Jordynn McAnally scored our only try of the game but the girls played well. Game 3 saw us come up against Great Lakes College, Forster and once again the girls were out-played. Our final game against St Clare’s Taree was another hard-fought game with both Breanna Smeadley and Shanaye Brown scoring during the game. The girls went down 3-2 but played extremely well and improved throughout the day. The team consisted of: Shanaye Brown, Kate Field, Sarah Hatherly , Jasmine Hyde, Jordynn McAnally , Maddison McKee, Tiana Myers, Emma Rooney, Breanna Smedley, Tamika Vogele and Mia Wilbow . Tracey Bewicke Coach Hockey - School Sport Australia Tri-Series Competition During the holidays Joshua Dowrick travelled to South Africa to represent Australia in the School Sport Australia tri-series competition against the Under 18 boys South African team. This accomplishment represents the pinnacle of achievement in school sport. Joshua tells me that his experience was not dampened by the loss to South Africa, but was rather a chance to make lifelong friends and broaden his future opportunities. We are very proud of your achievements Joshua and I am sure it won’t be the last time we see you in the green and gold!

MUSIC TUITION AT MACKILLOP COLLEGE Many aspiring music students of today often find “DIY” musical instrument teaching resources through online courses, apps and youtube courses. Whilst such technology is a good aid for learning, research states that the best way to learn a musical instrument is through individual tuition from an expert teacher. Furthermore, the Stage 6 Music curriculum requires students to perform for assessment on an instrument of their choice. It is therefore necessary for schools with an interest in music excellence to provide opportunities for students to learn an instrument. As part of the MacKillop College Co-curricular Music Program students are provided with the opportunity to arrange private instrumental tuition directly with tutors at their homes or studios or at school in breaks or during class time. Enrolment Procedures Students wishing to join the Music Tuition program are required to contact the Co-curricular Music Co-ordinator by email providing the following information:

• Parent and student contact details • The instrument that you would like to learn • The preferred lesson time e.g before school, during class time or after school

The Co-curricular Music Co-ordinator will then contact a suitable tutor on your behalf to check availability. The tutor will then call you directly to confirm and arrange a suitable lesson time. Fees The cost of tuition is dependent upon tutor’s rates based on a 30 minute lesson. Tutors will invoice students for the Term and the payment is to be made direct to tutors, not to the school. Tutors have the right to cease lessons should the Term payment not be received within the time frames set by them. It is expected that all students will maintain enrolment in instrumental music lessons for the entire school year. However, in the rare case where a student’s enrolment is terminated, this is to be done by giving a minimum of two weeks’ notice, or payment in lieu of notice to the tutor. Timetables Music tuition at MacKillop College is scheduled on a rotating timetable across 8 weeks to ensure that students don’t miss the same class twice in a Term. When setting timetables, tutors (in consultation with parents and the Co-curricular Music Coordinator) are encouraged to schedule lessons outside of class time as much as possible. Preference will always be made to break times, before or after school and timetabled music lessons. For students attending the Senior Campus, lessons MUST take place before or after school, during break times and during timetabled study periods. All students receiving instrumental music tuition are responsible for catching up on classwork missed. Tutors are advised not to timetable lessons during examination periods. It is the responsibility of the student and the tutor to ensure that this occurs. At the start of each Term tutors timetables will be posted on the Co-curricular Music webpage found in the Creative Arts section of the MacKillop College website. These will also be posted on the Co-curricular Music noticeboard outside the Music rooms in the “Music hub” area on the Junior Campus and outside the Music room on the Senior Campus. Although students should be told at the end of one lesson when their next lesson will take place, all students are encouraged to check the noticeboard regularly to remind themselves of the date and time of their next lesson.

Attendance Students must endeavour not to miss instrumental lessons. If there are any issues regarding students missing a curriculum lesson, staff, parents and students should discuss the matter with the Co-curricular Music Coordinator in the first instance. If a student has an important curriculum lesson which, for example, may contain assessed work, or activities such as school trips, it should be possible to alter peripatetic lesson times if adequate notice is given to inform other students of the timetable change.

• Lessons that are missed without prior notice will be forfeited. This does include missed lessons due to illness. Whilst our teacher may at their own goodwill try to recover these lessons, they cannot be guaranteed. Lessons are forfeited in the case of all unauthorized school absences. Students must give notice to their tutor if, for some reason, they cannot attend their lesson. This must be done, at the latest, on the morning of their lesson, before the tutor has left home. This enables tutors time to reschedule their day if need be.

• Where the tutor or the Co-curricular Music Coordinator is informed of an absence in advance (prior to the lesson itself), that lesson will not be forfeited and will be owed, or rescheduled in the timetable if possible.

• Naturally, an unforeseen absence on the part of a peripatetic teacher or in the unlikely event of school closure will count as a lesson owed. These are recovered before the end of term, and where this is not logistically possible, a reimbursement will be issued.

Venue All tuition takes place in the “Music Hub” at the Junior Campus. This area includes the theatre space and the music rooms. Practice Students are expected to practice regularly. Beginner students should be allocating 10 minutes a day. The golden rule is ‘little but often!’ Students studying at HSC level should be practicing at least for 1 hour per day. Tutors are requested to contact parents if there are any concerns. Practice rooms are available next to the music rooms at both Campuses to practice their instruments during breaks in the school day and before and after school. Practice room bookings can be made through the Co-curricular Music Coordinator or the classroom music teacher. Instrument Storage Students may store their instruments in one of the designated practice rooms or music rooms at either campus depending on where they attend classes. PLEASE ENSURE THAT ALL INSTRUMENT CASES ARE CLEARLY LABELLED WITH YOUR NAME. Students must take responsibility for their instruments by leaving them in the designated area. Whilst these store rooms are managed by music staff for the majority of the day the school cannot take responsibility for lost instruments if students do not leave instruments in the correct place. Instrumental Rental Please complete the Instrumental Rental Form from the school website and return it to the school if you require an instrument for lessons. REHEARSALS IN WEEK 4 TERM 3 MONDAY
