5Yet more Sheffielders are expected to take to two wheels in January, say Sheffield’s cycling professionals, Pedal Ready, but every local cyclist should make it their New Year resolution to get skilled up first.

“If you’ve got a new bike for Christmas, or if you fancy improving your health and saving a fortune by riding more often in 2013, why not give us a call so you can make sure you’re a skilled up urban cycle commuter?” said Gareth Nicholas, from Pedal Ready.

“The Department for Transport have just updated their cycle commuting courses, so we can teach you the latest advanced cycling skills, which will make you at least three times less likely to have an injury when you ride to work, college or school.”

Dear ResidentsWelcome to the February issue of 5Alive!

SOAR Works is still thriving with over 25 businesses currently renting over 40 units. We look forward to future expansion, further synergy and success with SOAR in our aim to support a vulnerable workforce. We have found that the ethos and social mission of SOAR as an organisation sits very comfortably alongside our own’’ Dave Metcalfe, Aspire Community Enterprise Ltd

The free government-funded sessions are part of Sheffield Council’s Sheffield CycleBoost scheme, and are available at no charge to anyone living or working in the city. The sessions are at various times and cover all levels of cycling.

“This is NOT cycling proficiency,” said Gareth Nicholas. “This is about helping you reduce the hassle and worry of modern road conditions, it’s free, and it will dramatically reduce the chances of you having a crash. What have you got to lose?”

All Our StoriesLongley 4G are delighted to have received funding through Heritage Lottery Fund to deliver an All Our Stories Project.

The local history project has two strands, one to research the life of J G Graves, whose trust bequeathed the Four Greens and the second to build up a timeline of the local area and how it has developed over the centuries.

Working with children from Longley School, it will include visits to the Central Archives and Graves Art Gallery as well as locally held workshops to interview older residents who have memories of Longley which they are willing to share.

All the materials will form the basis of an exhibition in the Longley 4G Community Centre which will remain on display for the life of the Project.

There is also an opportunity for volunteers to become involved in digital media as the whole project will be photographed and audio recorded.

Anyone who has any maps, photographs or memories and would be interested in contributing to the Project should contact Sheryl Roberts on 0114 233 2984.

A TEAM of youngsters who go undercover to rate facilities in Sheffield have been given five stars themselves and presented with an award at the Houses of Parliament.

The Young Inspectors are a group of children and young people from different backgrounds and cultures, both disabled and able-bodied, who assess activities and places to go all over the city.

Now the project – which involves about 50 children and teenagers aged between eight and 19 – has won an ‘Inspiring Project’ award from the British Youth Council.

Two young inspectors from Parkwood Academy travelled to the Houses of Parliament to receive the award from Ed Timpson, Children and Families Minister.

The Young Inspectors receive full training and support from the council and then go undercover to take part in an activity, awarding between one and five stars for the help they’ve had from staff, safety and surroundings, accessibility and the fun factor. They award an overall star score and give feedback to the venue.

Award for Young Sheffield Inspectors

“This is a fantastic project which fully deserves national recognition. The Young Inspectors do a brilliant job. They’ve all made new friends, acquired new skills, and broadened their experience.”

Councillor Jackie Drayton, Sheffield City Council

“Our day in London was brilliant! We loved the ride to London, the pictures, and most of all how we had the awards presented to us in the House of Commons.

We went on the tube and to Trafalgar square where Lord Nelson has his own statue. After that we walked to the House of Commons where we collected the award and we had a smile on are faces for ages.”

Hassan Ahmed & Jordan Sheppard, Parkwood Academy

It’s been a very busy period for the North East Policing team. We were determined to ensure that the crime gangs we saw in Southey Green and Parson Cross were dismantled and between gang injunctions and a series of Police interventions, we are almost there.

Issues of concern are predominantly; • large groups of youths, behaving in an intimidating manner, and often fighting in the street • Involvement in gangs • Drug dealing at certain locations in this area.

There is still a lot for us to do and we have been talking to you, the wider community and our partners about the prospect of having a curfew and dispersal order for the Southey Ward. This will help us police areas where we see people gathering and break up groups, which cause the most problems in the locality and we will continue to target individuals and families causing problems.

A Section 30 dispersal order has been seen to be a useful tool and the order will enable a more robust polic-ing approach, but be sympathetic to those not responsible for the issues raised.

Section 30 of the Anti Social Behaviour Act 2003 contains police powers to disperse groups of 2 or more and also to return to their place of residence young people under 16 who are unsupervised in public places after 9pm. The Act contains powers of arrest for failing to disperse, as well as the power to remove children to their place of residence from designated areas. These powers can only be used in areas where

members of the public have suffered intimidation, harassment, alarm or distress due to the presence of groups AND where anti-social behaviour is a significant problem.

The order will commence on 1st February and run until 31st July, when it may be reviewed and possibly extended, and will cover the Southey Ward area, taking in Southey, areas of Parson Cross and Foxhill.

Members of the Southey Ward area can expect to see; • Intensive additional policing • Sustained, focused engagement work with partners • Joint patrols with school staff • A continued focus on organised criminality

If you have any views about how we police your community you can find us on Facebook (North East Safer Neighbourhood Team), Twitter (PCSO Deb Parker – Burngreave PCSO, PCSS Shaun Davis – PCSO supervisor, Inspector Simon Leake – kpinspector) or email Inspector Leake direct: [email protected]

Following the felling of 5 poplar trees within the school grounds, and a design competition by pupils leading to a Roald Dahl theme, a local chainsaw carver worked with the pupils for a week in January to create a new reading area consisting of carved benches and a sculpture. Three heavy standard trees were planted around the benches to provide shade and replace those removed.

Do you have any suggestions to improve streets/pavements in your area?

The Lord Mayor officially opened the new area on Friday 18 January. The reading area benches and sculpture were created from the same trees which were felled in the school grounds so it truly is recycling the wood!

The project has been co-ordinated by Community Forestry but is funded by the school itself. Contact Leonie Kapadia, Community Forestry Project Development Officer on 0114 273 6701

These will be considered as the Streetsahead project moves around the city to improve our streets (Parson Cross area and Holywell Road/Barrow Road/Ecclesfield road areas are targeted for April-June 2013).

You can submit your suggestions by telephone 0114 273 4479 or online – www.sheffield.gov.uk/roads (Please note all requests will need to be for the benefit of the wider community).

Visitors to the Learning Zone on the morning of Saturday 29th September were treated to a feast of music and dancing on Chaucer Square. This was the first event in the ‘Square Dance Project’; an exciting programme of dance performances planned for Chaucer Square this Spring and Summer. We asked lots of local people what sort of dance events they would like to see and what sort of dance classes they would like to take part in. Now we’ve listened and we’re busy putting our DANCE ON! programme together.

We are planning to put on a live dance event each month from May to September on Chaucer Square (outside the Learning Zone). There will be something for everyone including jive, hip hop, ballroom, line, folk and some surprises! As well as the live dance events, we will be putting on a programme of dance classes and workshop sessions, for local people of all ages to enjoy.

To help us do this, and to make sure we keep listening to what people want, we’re looking for local people to join our DANCE CHAMPIONS group to act as ambassadors, put us in touch with people and groups who might like to take part, advertise the dance events, or help on the day of the event. You don’t need to be a dancer or feel you need to commit a lot of time, just be someone who is interested and keen to get involved.

So if you are interested in getting involved and/or would just like more information please contact us by email: [email protected] or call/text, Project Manager, Maire McCarthy on 07941 883 276.
