Corpus Christi, Texas

Bayfront, Corpus Christi, Texas

Dear Desk and Derrick Members and Friends, On behalf of the Desk and Derrick Club of Corpus Christi, we welcome you to Corpus Christi, Texas. Load your Boat Full of Knowledge & Fun Experiences with Friends - Venture down to the breezy Corpus Christi Bay and enjoy spectacular views from luxury hotel rooms & a rooftop pool. If you were here in 2007, it will be evident that the city is improving in many ways. Tours - King Ranch is one of the birthplaces of Texas ranching and stewards a variety of indigenous and exotic animals for hunting and what is probably the largest population of wild bobwhite quail and quality white-tailed deer on a single ranch in the nation. The NSCS, National Spill Control School, is located on the beautiful "Island” University campus of Texas A&M on the Corpus Christi Bay. It offers specialized hands-on OSHA mandated training for professionals and workers in the Oil Spill, HAZMAT, and Emergency Management industries. Also on campus is the Jeff and Mary Bell Library which houses the Archives and Special Collections. This is where Desk and Derrick scrapbooks are stored and protected for future generations. Festivities on Corpus Christi Bay - Buc Days 80th Festival will be in full swing on the Bayfront during our time together. It is a Swashbuckling Pirate festival with music, corn dogs, and carnival rides located on the South end of downtown on Shoreline Blvd. Shop & Explore - Peruse selection of local artists & fine craftsmen’s unique paintings, photography, sculpture, dichroic glass, pottery, jewelry, wood crafts and more at shops within walking distance. Come On Down - Pack your bags, swimsuits, hats, & sunscreen. Head toward the Gulf Coast. Enjoy being with long-time friends and making new ones. Escalate your professional and personal value by attending this year’s Region IV Meeting in Corpus Christi, Texas. In 1519, on the Roman Catholic Feast Day of Corpus Christi, Spanish explorer Alonzo Alvarez de Pineda discovered a lush semi-tropical bay on what is now the southern coast of Texas. The bay, and the city that later sprung up there, took the name of the feast day celebrating the "Body of Christ."

FIELD TRIPS Thursday, May 4, 2017

1. King Ranch Tour

Cost: $60.00 (members) $70.00 (guest)

The journey begins at the historic Santa Gertrudis Creek where Captain King first camped in 1852. Nearby, modern brush clearing equipment, land-going leviathans conceived and

developed on King Ranch to clear

mesquite and huisache from the pastures, has found a permanent parking place. Continuing your trip, your guide will explain the history and the modern day workings of the Ranch. You will see the Calera Pens where at

roundup time the cattle are vaccinated, branded, and tagged. Keen eyes will spot wildlife along the way, and our wildlife tours are a totally separate program. Tours will pass the Auction Arena, the horse cemetery, and the Colony – home of the Kinenos or King’s Men. Historic buildings include Mrs. King’s Carriage House, the Commissary with its lookout tower, the show barn, and the grand home built in 1912 by Captain King’s widow, Henrietta.

King Ranch Museum

To understand the mythic past of King Ranch, a trip to the King Ranch Museum is a must. The museum is the definitive repository of ranch lore and the items on display clearly evoke the bygone days on Captain King’s legendary spread. Upon arriving at the King Ranch Museum, you are welcomed with a bronze sculpture of Mrs. Henrietta King and her son-in-law Robert J. Kleberg, Sr., as well as a sculpture of the first artesian well that was drilled on King Ranch in the summer of 1899. King Ranch Cowboy Camp house Barbeque - Ring the cook’s dinner bell

and experience a barbeque at an historic King Ranch cowboy camp house. Lunch and dinner menus include beef brisket and smoked sausage prepared over a mesquite wood fire, potato salad or coleslaw, camp beans, relishes, and beverage.

Final Stop - King Ranch Saddle Shop - Located a few minutes away from the King Ranch Museum and the King Ranch Visitor Center, you will have the chance to shop our leather goods and outdoor gear at the store to take home. The leather goods business of King Ranch originated in those chaotic years following the Civil War. During the War, the Ranch was raided and looted by Union troops. When the hostilities were finally over, Captain King re-established with the forethought that ranching in South Texas demanded not only good men, horses, and cattle, but also outstanding gear. He needed saddles that were durable, yet lightweight, comfortable to ride, yet easy on the horses' backs. Unsuccessful in finding saddles of this quality, he hired experienced craftsmen who could make them and soon began operating his own saddlery.

Improving Productivity with Integrated Workflows in IHS Kingdom Presented by Vladimir Rybakov, Sr. Technical Advisor. One of the biggest challenges that every E & P company faces is making quick, accurate and timely decisions when quantifying and drilling oil and gas reserves. We will see the flexibility and utility of IHS Kingdom Software for these types of integrated workflows. Topics that will be covered include well management, lithostratigraphic correlation, 1D and 2D seismic modeling, pre- and post-stack seismic attributes, depth conversion, production analysis along with gridding and mapping techniques. Field Production Gathering - A Key Component of a Company's Success Presented by Frank Vrla, Director Field Support Team, FieldDIRECT. Frank will discuss how FieldDIRECT can help a company improve field operations and maintain production using field data gathering tools. The oil industry is going through a chapter that each producing companies cash flow will be severally stressed. This is a time where every dollar from every barrel of oil will need to be accounted for. So tracking/monitoring even the lowest producing wells will be very important. Of course the best way would be to use automation with real time tracking. But as we all know the cost to implement that is prohibitive, especially on marginal production. So near real time reporting is the next best thing.
