The work for the revision of the code has been started in 1968 and was finished in the Plenary Session of the Bacteriological Section of the lAMS at its congress 1973. Besides some minor amendments , for simplifying the rules a new starting date for the priority of names is proposed (1st January 1980 rather than 1st May 1753). The phylogeny of the immune system is as fascinating a field as is its onto- geny. Most of those working with men and mice are not aware of the progress made in understanding the evolution of the immune system. This small book is an introduction into comparative immunology with emphasis on biology and physiology of the immune system. It starts with a general introduction into the immune system, followed by eight chapters cover- ing the subject from primitive defence mechanisms in invertebrates to mamma- lian immunology. The book is intended for undergraduate students and within this scope it certainly fulfils its intention. The book contains no data on immuno- globulin sequences which, at least for mammalian species, are abundantly available. Das Buch kann interessierten Lesern, die sich einen Uberblick liber immunologische Aspekte viraler Infektionen verschaffen wollen, empfohlen werden.
