Each year, the city of San Juan Capistrano cel-ebrates the Fiesta de las Golondrinas or Festival of the Swallows. This is the most memorable and awesome time of

year in our community with activities and events that embrace our history and heritage.

The Fiesta de las Golondrinas is tied to the legendary return of the swallows from their home in Goya, Argentina to Mission San Juan Capistrano on March 19, St. Joseph’s Day. This annual event is known worldwide.

In its 56th year, the Swallows Day Parade is the highlight of the month. It features a colorful cast of characters of all ages and from all walks of life who gather in the center of town for a spec-tacular parade.

If you are joining us again, welcome back. If you are here for the fi rst time, put on your cowboy boots and hats and get ready for the best show on the planet. This is an event that binds our community and that long ago put it on the international map.

I tip my hat to the volunteers of the San Juan Capistrano Fiesta Association who devote their time and eff orts year-round to producing one of the largest non-motorized parades in the country.

Welcome to your 56th Swallows Day Parade and Fiesta de las Golondrinas season!

The San Juan Capistrano Fiesta Associa-tion strives every year to continue bringing these traditions to each of you.

Each year we honor the return of the swallows to San Juan Capistrano from Argentina, so it is only fi tting that we celebrate their arrival.

Our 2014 theme “New Trails West” was inspired partly by all of the trails and open space in the wonderful city of San Juan Capistrano.

Over 45,000 spectators from through-out San Juan Capistrano and the greater

Orange County community enjoy one of the largest non-motorized pa-rades in the country. This year’s parade will feature approxi-mately 500 horses, a dozen marching bands, carriages, wagons and over 3,200 walking folks

from schools, local businesses and com-munity organizations.

I want to thank our many volunteers, the city of San Juan Capistrano and this amaz-ing community, and most notably, our sponsors who provide the critical funding to produce the Swallows Day Parade and other Fiesta de las Golondrinas events including the Membership Mixer, Taste of San Juan, Kids Pet Parade, El Presidente Ball, Fiesta Grande and Hoos’Gow Day.

Jim Curwood, owner of San Juan Capistrano-based Buy My Bikes, is proudly serving as grand marshal of the 2014 Swallows Day Parade.

Curwood opened South County Cyclery on Camino Capistrano in 1978. The name was changed to Buy My Bikes in 1995.

“Bicycle Jim” is a passionate business leader in the San Juan Capistrano community and a longtime supporter of the San Juan Capistrano Fiesta Association as well as numerous local nonprofi t organizations. He’s donned his famous bee costume and entered the Swallows Day Parade for the majority of the past 35 years.

Upon being selected as grand marshal Curwood said, “I am both proud and humbled to serve as the parade’s grand marshal and feel it is a great priority to preserve the parade that represents our city’s great tradition and pride of the community.”

Fiesta Grande is a lively evening tied to Old West traditions with cash prizes awarded to Best Dressed Old West Man, Best Dressed Old West Woman, Best Belt Buckle, Best Mus-tache, Best Dance Hall Girl and the judging of the Hairiest Man Contest (men who were clean shaven as of Jan. 11).

Hoos’Gow DayFriday, March 21, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Held throughout down-town San Juan Capistrano, this event is a long-standing San Juan tradition where Fiesta Association sheriff and deputies—dressed in their traditional black and white Western wear—search the city and arrest clean-shaven men and anyone not dressed in Western attire. Roaming jails make stops throughout the city and “jail birds” must pay a fee to be released.

Señor San Juan James Valgean and Ms. Fiesta Deborah Valgean have collectively been involved with the Fiesta Association and Swallows Day Parade for over 30 years.

The San Juan Capistrano residents are thrilled to be this year’s senior dignitaries and have attended numerous local events on behalf of the Fiesta Association.

The couple is also involved with local causes including the Seaside Highland Games cel-ebrating their Scottish heritage and Knights Templar.

They are truly honored to be in this role and counting down the days until the March 22 Swallows Day Parade.

The 2014 Jr. Dignitaries were selected by the J.F. Shea Therapeutic Riding Center based in San Juan Capistrano. Jr. Señor San Juan is Brad Marshall, a Shea Center client for the past 16 years. The 26-year-old Laguna Hills resident works at Zoomars, loves horses and riding at the Shea Center.

Jr. Miss Fiesta is Shea Center client Courtney Yacovone. She is 16 years old and lives in Mission Viejo. She started riding at the Shea Center when she was 10 years old and is part of a new pilot program at the organization where she will serve as a volunteer, as well as a participant, in their therapeutic riding programs.

Both Jr. Dignitaries have been parade par-ticipants in the Shea Center’s entry for many years and look forward to riding in this year’s parade as representatives of the San Juan Capistrano Fiesta Association.

Chris Phillips loved San Juan Capistrano and was an active member of the Fiesta Associa-tion for 13 years. He served on the board, chaired the Kids Pet Parade and Fiesta Grande for several years and proudly served as Hangin’ Judge in 2013. Chris will always be remembered for his giving spirit, positive attitude and willingness to lend a hand to anyone in need. As a tribute

to Chris, this year’s Fiesta Association Mounted Posse parade entry will include a riderless horse.

The Hangin’ Judge tradi-tion started back in the early ’80s as part of the City Council’s annual proclama-tion marking the start of the Fiesta de las Golond-

rinas season and recognizing the Fiesta Association as its lead organizer.

One year, a member got the idea to put a rope around the mayor’s neck as he read the proclamation and it started a tradition.

Our 2014 Hangin’ Judge is San Juan Capistrano resident and longtime Fiesta Association member Bert Smit.

He served in this role back in 2010 and is proud to reclaim this position.

The Mercado Street Faire is a parade-day tradition and a great place to stop in before, during or after the parade.

An actual street fair, the Mercado started out along Ortega Highway from Camino Capistrano to El Camino Real. It has expanded over the years and now takes place along El Camino Real from Ortega High-way to Forster Street and on the streets in between.

Featuring more than 100 street vendors selling food, drinks, jewelry, Western items and a variety of arts and crafts, the Mercado is free to attend and runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on parade day,

Adjacent to the Mercado in Historic Town Center Park, is an area for children of all ages with games and rides including a wrecking ball, giant slide, space maze and a “bubble roller” for older children or young-hearted adults. The park also serves as the site for parade entry awards immediately following

the parade. Rick Robledo and The Working Cowboy Band will play

throughout the day and they’ll be plenty of western dancing.

The Orange County Sherriff deputies and Marines from the City of San Juan Capistrano’s adopted 1/11 Marines will provide event security to keep the event safe and enjoyable for everyone.

And back by popular demand, beer will be sold at the Mercado Street Faire from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The Swallows Day Parade is an outgrowth of a school carnival held in the 1950s to celebrate the return of the swallows to San Juan Capistrano. With a vision for something much more, several dedicated residents turned that small-town carnival into a local equestrian parade in 1958 to involve the entire community.

Today, 56 parades later, the San Juan Capistrano Fiesta Association will celebrate the parade’s theme, “New Trails West.”

The San Juan Capistrano Fiesta Association began as a committee of the San Juan Capistrano Business Council, which later became the San Juan Capistrano Chamber of Commerce.

In addition to the equestrian parade, the group or-ganized a trail ride and western dance. Various activi-ties have been added and dropped over the years, but the parade continues on.

The Swallows Day Parade became such a major pro-duction over the years that in 1987 it assumed its own identity as a separate, nonprofi t organization known as the San Juan Capistrano Fiesta Association.

Since 1987, a number of other civic organizations have joined with the Fiesta Association to form a month-long celebration known as the “Fiesta de las Golondrinas” or Festival of the Swallows.

In addition to celebrating the return of the swallows, the goal of the Fiesta Association events is to pay trib-ute to San Juan Capistrano’s unique Western, Spanish and local Juaneño Indian heritage.

Because of the enormous city growth since its incor-poration in 1961, the Fiesta Association has played a strong role in helping newer residents assimilate into the community.

In 1995, the city of San Juan Capistrano made the Fiesta Association the lead coordinating organization with approval rights for all Fiesta de las Golondrinas events.

An underlying goal of the organization is that newer residents will come to appreciate San Juan Capist-rano’s long and interesting history as Orange County’s oldest community.

Membership in the San Juan Capistrano Fiesta Asso-ciation is open to anyone interested in being part of a dedicated group of people who are still making history in San Juan Capistrano.

Taylor Troccoli created artwork inspired by this year’s Swallows Day Parade theme “New Trails West” as part of the annual youth art program. Taylor’s drawing was chosen from among her fellow Shea Center clients to be featured in this program. Well done Taylor!

Helen McMullen was named Town Matriarch by the San Juan Capistrano Historical Society in 2002 because of her deep roots and love of San Juan Cap-istrano.

She is the daughter of Ralph Charles and Reyes Marie Manriquez, both Juaneño descendants. Her father helped build the wall on Stone Field in the 1930s and later worked in the San Pedro shipyards during WWII.

Helen sang in the Mission San Juan choir for 20 years and was a guide. After she graduated from high school in 1941, she married Bill McMullen.

Helen has been involved in Indian aff airs for many years and is past president of the Capistrano Indian Council.

Growing up with everyone calling you Happy is probably one of the greatest compliments. Thom-as Hunn was the fi rst baby born in Orange County in the year 1933. It was New Year’s Day and his par-ents were so pleased with his birth, they called him Happy, a name that has stuck all his life.

The San Juan Capistrano Historical Society bestowed the honor of Town Patriarch on Happy

several years ago and it is role that he cherishes.

Happy is a member of the Juaneño Indian tribe and consequently has deep

roots in this community. His mother was a Juaneño and his father George Hunn came from Germany. His great-grandmother, Viviana Olivares, was a former Matriarch in the 1960s.

Happy worked for the City of Laguna Beach for over 38 years and was a foreman for the street department. He enjoys golf and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He is a lifetime member of VFW Post 3801 and is past Post Commander and past Com-mander of the American Legion Post 721.
