They’re underdogs against reigning double- holders UL Eagles in the clash, which is screened live at 8.45pm on Setanta Ireland, but are hoping to bring the cup back to Leeside to honour the memory of Emmet Neville. The gifted player died 10 years ago this week at the age of 21. “My gut feeling tells me this is going to be the year that the drought ends,” Ger says, “but first we have to play out of our skins.” Team Montenotte captain Gráinne Dwyer is looking forward to the mouth-water- ing women’s National Cup decider against UL Huskies at 6.45pm, also live on Setanta Ireland. Dwyer, one of the grittiest players in Irish basketball, believes her team has the firepower to bring down the champions. “UL are overwhelming fa- vourites, but we stand proud as the only team to have defeated them in two years of competition.” Looking back on Team Montenotte’s league win, Dwyer is wary UL will be going all out to avenge that defeat. “There is little doubt when they were leading us by 23 points in the first half, they thought it was a case of go- ing through the motions.” BASKETBALL National Cup preview in Cork Sports World Cobh regain league status COBH Ramblers are back in the League of Ireland after a four-year absence, The east Cork were awarded a First Division li- cence by the FAI to com- pete in the 2013 First Divi- sion, which will consist of eight clubs. The return of the harbour club is a welcome develop- ment for the Airtricity League, after they failed to meet the first division criter- ia on previous occasions due to financial issues. The decision paves the way for an eight-team First Division subject to licences being issued when the com- mittee meet again in mid-February after the January 30 deadline for final financial submissions from other clubs. As a new applicant, Cobh requested an early decision in their case. This was to fa- cilitate the registration of players prior to the January 31 amateur transfer window deadline. See P47 for more. Coughlan intends to make the most of his op- portunity and reckons all the players are in the same boat as they put their hands ups for selec- tion for the senior side. “It’s an opportunity for everybody,” said the num- ber eight. “It’s not being dismissed as ‘off you go now lads, play your game and we’ll see you at the end of the Six Nations. “We’ve been in the meetings. We’ve been go- ing through game plans and having a look at the Welsh stuff so the carrot is there.” Coughlan’s provincial boss Rob Penney was at Coughlan’s alma mater Cork CBC yesterday to see his sons received their cup jersies. Cameron Penney re- ceived his second row jer- sey for the junior cup team, while older brother Alex, a blindside wing for- ward, received his senior cup jersey. More P18, P49-50. The emphasis is again on ex- perimentation with a number of players getting their first com- petitive start in a red jersey. Only eight of the side that started in last week’s win over UCC have been retained for this assignment and there’s a new full-back line of James O’Donovan from Bandon, Mark Ellis from Millstreet and Pat O’Sullivan from Carrigtwohill. O’Donovan featured in a chal- lenge outing against CIT while Ellis was in the squad last sea- son. Christopher Joyce and Steph- en White are retained in the half-back line and are joined by Colm Spillane, who featured in the full-back sector last week- end. New-look Rebels to face WIT HURLINIG By JOHN HORGAN Daniel Kearney starts again at midfield and is joined by Rob O’Shea from Carrigaline, the player who replaced him against UCC when the Sarsfields player received a knock. Brian Corry gets another chance in the half-forward line and he will be joined in the centre-forward slot by Cian Mc- Carthy with newcomer Cormac Murphy from Mallow getting his first ever taste of senior inter-county action. Opportunity knocks for Kil- worth’s Adrian Mannix at right corner-forward with Michael Cussen getting another outing at full-forward and Newtown’s Jamie Coughlan makes his first start of the year on the left.
