Alabama’s Ringmaster Fly-A-

Thon. We logged 76 flights on

October 3, 2020 and we logged 52

flights on October 4, 2020 for a total

of 128 flights.

Total number of pilots was 10.

Eight veterans and two very young

future pilots. The NACA club

members that flew were John

Cameron, Jim Howell, Bill Johnson,

Ty Marcucci, John Rist, and Ronnie

Thompson. Down from Nashville,

Tennessee was Mike Londke and his

son Sam. The two future pilots were

Gary Davidson Haven't flown these planes in at least

25 years. Engines needed work from

sitting. On one of the 1/2a flights, it

quit at 4 laps and another it only

made 6 laps. But that one was at least

a success.

last year, all the Flyers agreed that

this was the most fun Ringmaster

The oldest pilot was 75. This was the

first time at this event for 2 pilots.

They are sure to return!

Weather for both days was typical of

October in Michigan, WINDY and

cool.

The only suggestion is the same one

we make every year; it would be

great for us if this event took place

earlier in the year when the weather

is better. We would likely experience

more participation. We do however

MrClean Ohhhh, Guys, finally this year I

rememberd my tank was too low

making inverted flights a death

sentance and upright flights veeeery

lean. I got smart and moved the tank

before flying. Adjusted the needle

once and had 10 perfect flights, no

drama mama. Thanks to explaining

selfie mode to a buddy of mine, his

motor was turning backwards on his

video, I decided I could fly the 10th

flight clockwise, here's video of the

These are additional flights to

Saturdays flights, sorry for the extra

book-keeping but the more the

merrier. 8 laps into my Oldest Grand-

daughters flight we wandered a bit

too close to the Hedge-apple tree and

it took my tail feathers off so we

landed rather excitedly. I cleared the

field and everyone had fun driving my

John Deere Lawn mower.

Beautiful day even with the damage.

years of age.

Our club field is gravel and

decomposed granite but we expect to

be upgraded this year and should

have more participation next year.

Everyone had a smile on their face

when their flights were over!

The plane that got the most flights

was equipped with an R/C throttle

and lap times were around 10

seconds to prevent dizziness. Works

great!!!

Some notable highlights:

-Troy Martin made a great save when

his RM shed its outboard wing. He

landed safely to thunderous applause

from the pits.

-Mark Troutman's Red Head McCoy

was running very well right up to

throwing the head and sleeve about

20 yards away. The engine returned

on Sunday with blue head.

-At 80 years young and some balance

issues, Dee Rice got in a flight with a

very rich needle setting to get on the

stat sheet!

-Mark managed to get in 5 touch-and-

go's with his Imperial with no prop

strikes! This kept the peanut gallery

entertained during a long over-run.

This event has grown in importance

was preempted by a local rec Center

girls Vollyball group so we only had

one day to perform our flights

inasmuch as the weather turned rainy

be noted, of the 13 pilots, 8 were new

to control line and of those four

completed at least five laps.

Our two highlights, Elckar, managing

to get inverted 5ft after launch and

completing the next six laps inverted

before "landing" and young

Christopher (6 years old) completing

a full tank including two loops and

returning to level flight before

landing. This was his first try at C/L

All are looking forward to next year.

The wind was against us today.

Normally no one would have flown.

The 3 of us braved thru. Were

primarily a radio control club, sport,

scale, 3d, and pylon racers. Myself

and a couple of others try to keep

some UC going.

We had 2 others lined up to fly, sadly

we broke my trainer and they

declined to try the Ringmasters.

We had some of the best laughs

today.

Next year we'll be better prepared.

west coast of South Korea) and spent

a day together and got in some

We had 2 control line circles. The

flying was great! Our oldest flyer, Obi

Mapua (76) years old, had not flown

CL in 5 months, and after 15 laps, got

very dizzy. He had to sit down after

his flight. The weather was great.

The planes were great flyers. John

Lester was able to make the

Ringmaster do consecutive loops

(inside and out), and fly inverted. We

want to do this again!
