About our
CEREMONIES
Academic Regalia
On Convocation Day, University members and their guests wear special attire based on a tradition that dates back as long as seven centuries ago. The academic costume, also referred to as academic “dress” or “regalia,” had its origins in the medieval European universities. The regalia were devised to distinguish academic persons as doctors, licentiates, masters, and bachelors.
There are many variations of academic dress. The hood, gown, and in some cases the special hat worn by an individual are determined by the style of the university where he or she receives a degree. The colourful gowns and hoods of the universities from across Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, and several other nations of the world are worn at Lakehead University today.
The academic dress chosen by Lakehead University is fashioned after that of the University of Oxford, the oldest English-speaking university in the world. The robes worn by the officers of the
WELCOME TO LAKEHEAD UNIVERSITY’S 54TH CONVOCATION CELEBRATION!
University – the Chancellor, who presides at convocation, the President and Vice-Chancellor and the Chair of the Board of Governors – are all of the Oxford cut and trim. Each has its own distinctive colour. The colourful gowns worn by the individuals who are receiving honorary degrees are of the same design as are the black gowns worn by the student candidates.
The ritual at convocation reflects the medieval custom that anyone in a university could wear a gown, but a hood was the symbol of a degree. Students who have met the University’s academic requirements (three, four, five, six or seven years of study in particular subjects) wear the symbol of their status as holders of a Lakehead University degree. Lakehead University’s bachelor’s and master’s degree hoods are distinguished by a one or two inch colour border which indicates the degree acquired (i.e. white for Arts, gold for Science, blue for Education, burgundy for Nursing, etc).
The Mace
During the processional and the recessional, the Marshal for convocation carries the Mace, a silver wand which is a traditional symbol of the University’s authority. This mace was given to the University by the Alumni Association in 1971. It bears the University’s motto “Ad augusta per angusta”, Achievement through Effort.
Convocation is a traditional ceremony during which the University officially grants the degrees and diplomas earned by its students. The word “convocation” means “calling together.” It is a ceremonial meeting of the entire University community.

DEBORAH MARTIN-DOWNS Doctor of Science
Deborah Martin-Downs, B.E.S., M.Sc., graduated in 1979 with a Bachelor of Environmental Studies from the University of Waterloo, at a time when environmental careers were just beginning. She went on to obtain a Master of Science in Zoology and Environmental Studies from the University of Toronto in 1985, where she specialized in the freshwater fish ecology and community shifts due to land use changes between the 1950s and 1980s. Over her career she continued to develop her expertise with a variety of public and private sector positions including initiating an urban fishing program with Toronto and Region Conservation/Ministry of Natural Resources and 16 years as an environmental consultant with Gartner Lee Limited (1989-2005) undertaking a variety of environmental projects throughout Ontario and in a variety of sectors.
In 2005 Deborah left the private sector to become Director of the Ecology Division of the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority and in 2013 became the Chief Administrative Officer of the Credit Valley Conservation Authority. In these roles she has participated in the research and development of new policies, practices and guidance based on research and monitoring. Such endeavours included headwater tributaries, low impact development, natural heritage systems and compensation, watershed plans, and green infrastructure. She is one of the founding members and currently serves as Chair of the Green Infrastructure Ontario Coalition. Seeing a need among conservation authorities she founded Conservation Authorities University, an executive training program for CA staff.
Over the course of her career she has held progressive roles managing multidisciplinary teams of environmental specialists in the fields of geoenvironmental, watershed planning, terrestrial and aquatic ecology, flood risk and infrastructure, water resources engineering, source water protection, and environmental monitoring. Her greatest source of pride is the number of young conservation professionals that she has had the opportunity to mentor and work with over the years.
In addition to her work she spent 12 years as a volunteer with the Don Watershed Regeneration Council, is currently a Director of the Muskoka Lakes Association and has been recently appointed as a Director of the Walkerton Clean Water Centre.
Honorary
DEGREESThe University confers “honorary” degrees which symbolize the highest honour that can be conferred upon an individual by the University. An honorary degree may be awarded in recognition of scholarly or creative achievements or distinguished public service to the country or region. They are awarded to individuals who have been designated by the University’s Senate, its senior academic governing body a deserving special honour.
At Convocation, the degree is awarded honoris causa, or “for the sake of honour”. A hood is also given to the recipient and it may be worn to any academic affair. Recipients of these degrees become honorary alumni of the University and they may affix, after their names, the abbreviation of the degree.
This year, Lakehead University is proud to honour the following exceptional individual:
