Some Workshops Highlights

SECRETS FOR BUILDING COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: HOW TO ATTRACT, INVOLVE, REWARD AND RETAIN ENGAGED CONSTITUENTS – KAREN SUSMANEvery municipality needs constituents to be interested, engaged and involved. As Glenda Morgan, retired Mobile, Alabama municipal clerk said, “Without community involvement, you don’t have a community.” Volunteers can pick up the slack of tight budgets. City council and board positions need to be filled. Community consensus needs to be built if you’re going to get anything accom-plished. This session focuses on why engaged constituents are important, how to attract constitu-ents, how to qualify them, engage them and turn them into active volunteers or participants. Take lots of practical ideas back to your community.

• Learn how to make the volunteer experience positive and lasting. • Learn how to be more visible in your community in order to gain consensus. • Learn how storytelling can build community.

EXHIBITOR ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSIONSKnowing and using our resources is critically important if we are to do our jobs as effi ciently as possi-ble. Business and governmental partners are an integral part of our industry and play a unique role in providing support services for all of us. New to the Annual Conference this year is Exhibitor Round-table Discussions. Six businesses from across the state were chosen to facilitate topics benefi cial to municipal offi cials. The topics are:

• The benefi ts of qualifi cation based selection (QBS) and application to on-call type contracts for professional services• Disaster recovery and business continuity• Strategic planning and goal setting for the Mayor and the members of the City Council• Providing grant funding to communities regarding fi re prevention in wild land urban interface settings• Municipal fi nancing debt markets• Recycling in the State of New Mexico

There will be two 30-45 minute discussions for the topics. Delegates will have the option of par-ticipating in both sessions on the same topic or move to a different topic for the second session. Groups will be limited to 20 attendees. Once a group is full, attendees will be directed to their second choice. After the conference, summaries of the discussions will be sent to all attendees. Don’t miss out on this new opportunity to engage in these intriguing conversations!
