Overnight: Smart Cancun by Oasis or similar Meals included: In-Flight

Day 2 Cancun - Valladolid (approx. 160km day)Today be met by the tour leader and depart Cancun for Valladolid. This colourful colonial town reflects both its Mayan roots and more recent Spanish history, with gorgeous colonial buildings, charming shops and increasingly famous local cuisine. Upon arrival at the hotel, the remainder of the day is free at leisure. Look out for signs to Cenote Zaci, one of the Yucatan’s turquoise fresh water sink-holes, located just a few blocks from the centre of town.

Overnight: La Aurora Hotel Colonial or similar Meals included: Breakfast

Day 3 Chichen Itza Archaeological Site Tour – Izamal - Merida (approx. 180km day)After breakfast at the hotel, depart for the archaeological site of Chichen Itza, one of the best-restored Yucatan Mayan sites. Explore the magnificent ruins set in a dense jungle, including

the Pyramid of Kukulcan – its height and striking geometric design dominate the whole site. See the Great Ball Court, the largest and most impressive in Mesoamerica, the Sacred Cenote - a natural well used for human sacrifice - and other beautiful temples.

Afterwards, drive to Izamal. In ancient times, Izamal was a centre for the worship of the supreme Mayan god, Itzamna, and the sun god, Kinich-Kakmo. A dozen temple pyramids were devoted to these gods. See the sites of this impressive monastery, the Mayan ruins, and the streets of this quiet, colonial gem, nicknamed “La Ciudad Amarilla” (the yellow city) because of the traditional yellow that most buildings are painted in. Continue onto Merida, the social and economic centre, and capital of Yucatan state. The city’s main boulevard, Paseo Montejo, is home to impressive European-style mansions with pastel shades and elaborate trim, which are reminiscent of lavishly iced wedding cakes. Enjoy a panoramic city tour on the way to the hotel.

Overnight: Hotel Del Gobernador or similar Meals included: Breakfast

Day 4 Merida – Uxmal Archaeological Site - Hacienda ‘Sotuta de Peon’ Visit (approx. 170km day)Today, visit the archaeological site of Uxmal, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its architecture is characterised by low horizontal palaces set around courtyards, decorated with a profusion of symbolic motifs and sculptures depicting the long-nosed rain god Chaac. Explore magnificent buildings, including the House of the Magician, which dominates the site; the Nunnery, and the House of Turtles.

In the afternoon, take in a bit of 18th century history with a drive to Yucatan’s only working henequen (sisal) hacienda (farm) ‘Sotuta de Peon’. Here you will see the whole transformation process of the henequen (sisal rope), from plant to fibre and from fibre to finished product, all done on centuries old machinery. You will then get onto wooden carts pulled by mules, originally used by henequen workers, and take a ride

Explore the mostly unrestored temples set deep in tropical jungle, and climb the Great Pyramid of Nohoch Mul, the tallest Mayan structure on the Yucatan Peninsula.
