Band of Brothers:A Midshipman Bolitho Novel

by Alexander Kent

“Full of rousing sea action.”—Kirkus Reviews

Alexander Kent, the master of gripping Age of Sail warfare, returns to Bolitho’s early days as a midship-man in this brand new Richard Bolitho Novel.

Bolitho stands on the brink of manhood and must pass his examination before the Navy Board to begin his true career as a King’s Offi cer. Soon, he and his friend Martyn Dancer set sail to deliver the new schooner Hotspur to the Channel Islands. Bolitho fi nds himself forced to confront an abusive lieutenant and test his mettle against vicious smugglers. And then he is sent on a perilous mission to cut out the smugglers’ brig. Will he face up to the challenge of leadership and earn the right to join the courageous few who stand together as a band of brothers?

Once again Kent has penned a stirring story of integrity and bravery under fi re. Here, too, Bolitho’s friend, Martyn Dancer, returns for one last adventure and the fi nal chapter of their friendship.

Sand of the ArenaA Gladiators of the Empire Novel

by James Duffy

“Duffy recreates in gory detail the world of Roman gladiators, complete with larger-than-life characters and plenty of fast-paced, sanguinary action. . . [an] entertaining read.”

—Publishers Weekly

In 63 AD the long arm of the Roman Empire stretches across the European continent and the gladiatorial games are awash in blood and glory. For Quintus Honorius Romanus, son of one of the richest men in Rome, everything is as it should be—as long as he can sneak off to the arena for a little entertainment. Things go drastically wrong, however, when Quintus loses his family, his social standing, and his name to an impos-ter. Faced with a life of

menial slavery, Quintus joins a gladiatorial school instead and begins a game of high stakes, as he vows to bring down the usurper who stole his life. But fi rst he must survive his train-ing. Together with the deadly African hunter Lindani and the lethal gladiatrix Amazonia, Quintus learns the hard way what it means to live—and die—in the arena. For the Gladiators of the Empire, the goal is simply to survive!

Three New Bargain Books!

The Billy Ruffi an:The Bellerophon and the Downfall of Napoleon: The Biography of a Ship of the Line, 1782-1836

by David Cordingly“It is a masterly account and, like all good biogra-phies, says as much, if not more, about the historical context as about the subject itself.” —Sunday Times (London)

“Billy Ruffi an” was the 74-gun warship Bellerophon familiar to readers of Patrick O’Brian or C.S. Forester. Curator of England’s National Maritime Museum, David Cordingly presents the ship’s history from 1782 to her death as a prison hulk more than 50 years later. The ship played a conspicuous part in three of the most famous sea battles: the battle of the Glorious First of June (1794), the Battle of the Nile (1798), and the battle of Trafalgar (1805). But her crown-ing glory came after Waterloo in 1815, when Napoleon surrendered to the captain of the ship that had dogged his steps for more than twenty years. Cordingly has used diaries, ship’s logs, and personal letters to create a vigorous biography of a warship and her times. Illustrated with period paintings, maps, plans, diagrams and engrav-ings in color and black and white.Hardcover illustrated • 355 pages • (List Price $25.95) Only $7.95

The Sea Warriorsby Richard WoodmanChronicles the true-life exploits of men like Lord Cochrane, Charles Brisbane, and Nisbet Willoughby—British naval heroes who have stood largely in the shadow cast by Lord Nelson. Extraordinary seamen pepper the pages of this history, which recounts the

Napoleonic Wars and the daring, resourceful Americans in the War of 1812. It records in detail the deeds

of the captains and mates who manned opposing frigates—blockad-ing ports, intercepting trade, and protecting merchant ships. Here too is an account of harsh discipline, wearying monotony—and mutiny! Through it all, these heroes scored crucial victories and occasionally reaped spectacular rewards.Hardcover 384 pages • (List Price $26.00) Only $7.95

The Mammoth Book of Eyewitness Naval BattlesRichard Russell Lawrence, ed.Historic sea battles described by those who fought them, ranging from broad overviews by commanders to the personal, hard-hitting insights of the men in the thick of the fi ght-ing. Beginning with the classical era, the book moves to the Age of Sail and then to the ironclads and dreadnoughts, fi nally closing with the modern era. Twice the History, Twice the Excitement!by Bernard Cornwell

From master writer Bernard Cornwell, best known for his immensely popular Sharpe series set during the Napoleonic Wars: two spine-tingling trilogies that take place in much

earlier days.

In the time of King Arthur . . .

THE WARLORD CHRONICLES

In this gripping trilogy, Cornwell’s King Arthur is fi erce, dedicated, and complex—a man with many problems, most of his own making. Cornwell puts a new twist on Merlin, Guinevere, Lancelot, and the rest of the Arthurian legend, and he knows his history; the battle scenes seethe with blood and iron.

A Piece of 20th-Century Sports History

The Ice Bowl The Cold Truth About Football’s Most Unforgettable Game

by Ed Gruver

“An insightful, bone-chilling replay of pro football’s greatest game.”

—Gordon Forbes, USA Today

The Dallas Cowboys faced the Green Bay Packers in a classic NFL championship game on December 31, 1967—commonly known as the Ice Bowl. That New Year’s Eve in Green Bay brought in a merciless arctic chill and at game time the temperature held steady at -13 degrees. Add in the 15-mile-per-hour winds, and at fi eld level it felt like -40. It was so cold the referees’ whistles wouldn’t work. The fans came dressed in parkas covering layers of clothes underneath, and some watched the game peering out of heavy down sleeping bags. The fi eld was slightly thawed by an underground system of heating coils, moistening the sod; it then froze to solid ice.

Gruver puts the reader on the fi eld in one of the most thrilling football

games of all time, presented play-by-play, with diagrams and photographs,

as told by the players and coaches. Although some feared it would be a

disaster, the Ice Bowl became a legendary face-off between Hall of Fame players and

coaches and the wrath of nature. For those who remember the game and for those who

know it only as legend, The Ice Bowl is the defi nitive account of one of the truly great

football games.

“This book captures the essence of Lombardi’s fi nest hour.”

—Bob McGinn, Milwaukee Journal

“It was a day I’ll never forget . . . Ed Gruver brings it back vividly.”

—Ted Moore, Packers announcer, 1960-1969
