Letter from the Executive DirectorDear Friends,

Thank you for all you do to enable our work with pets in need. It is with your support and that of thousands of others, that we are able to accomplish this. For that, we are eternally grateful to you.

At the APF, we feel it is important to serve the greater Capital Region in a way that addresses community needs and is uniquely suited to our strengths. We are and have been since 1931, a regional humane organization that shelters and adopts homeless pets.

Over the past several years, we have evolved as a collaborative partner and resource sharing organization with partnerships in a seven county area. These collaborative relationships are with other animal shelters, rescues, TNvR organizations, and municipalities. Our collaborations include providing high quality and affordable spay and neuter services, sharing of staff expertise on animal behavior, training and modification practices, microchipping, and transferring in of animals to the APF to increase adoption opportunities for hard to place pets. We also have the opportunity to transfer an APF pet to one of our partner groups if that would be in the best interest of that dog or cat’s opportunity to be adopted. Additionally, as a humane organization with a physical presence in a highly populated area, we also share tangible resources with our partners in need. Together, we better serve the animals and the people of our greater Capital Region.

I would love to hear from you about how we are doing or if you see a need in the community with which you think we can help. Please contact me at (518) 374-3944 Ext. 110 or [email protected].

Sincerely,

Deb Balliet, Executive Director

We place safe, healthy animals in responsible homes with the expectation that adopters will provide quality and lifelong care. Our process includes an adopter questionnaire and an agreement detailing the care of every animal should receive.

We accept unwanted animals, preferably by appointment. Please call 374-3944, ext. 101. A contribution of $25 per animal is requested to offset the cost of care that we provide, an average of $200 per animal.

Share The Love

The Animal Protective Foundation was honored once again to be selected as the recipient of Subaru’s annual Share the Love Campaign. APF Executive Director Deb Balliet was presented with the proceeds at the 3rd Annual Share the Love Adoption Event held at Capitaland Subaru in Glenville. Capitaland raised an amazing $47,022 to help our shelter continue its efforts to help homeless pets in our area. THANK YOU to Al Rullo and Regina Grego, owners of Capitaland Subaru, for supporting the APF and making such an impact on the lives of animals!

“Kirby & Quigley’s Law” to Protect Pets and People

Patrick Krohn, Denise Krohn and Assemblyman Jim Tedisco

The killing of two dogs named Kirby and Quigley during a burglary in Montgomery County earlier this year is sparking renewed calls for tougher punishments.

Kirby and Quigley were shot when someone broke into the Krohn home in the Town of Florida in Montgomery County. Police are still looking for who committed the crime, but local lawmakers want to make sure they face harsher

punishments when they are caught. The bi-partisan bill would make it a Buster’s Law felony punishable with 2 years in jail and a $5,000 fine for harming a companion animal during the commission of another felony. This enhanced penalty ensures that perpetrators receive felony animal cruelty charges when they face other felonies, such as burglary, and would serve as a deterrent to make criminals think twice before executing an animal or face additional jail time.

The state Senate has passed Kirby and Quigley’s Law, but the bill has stalled in the state Assembly. Assemblyman Jim Tedisco (R-Glenville), Senator George Amedore (R-Schenectady) and other lawmakers are urging the Assembly to take up the bill.

There is a reward for information leading to the arrest of any suspect(s). If you have any information that can solve this case, please call the Montgomery County Sheriff at (518) 853-5500.

Q. My husband and I are currently in the process of writing our wills and would like to make a donation to the APF. What does my lawyer need to know?A. Our legal name is the Animal Protective Foundation of Schenectady, Inc. located at 53 Maple Avenue, Scotia, N.Y. 12302. Our tax identification number is: 14-0472728

Q. How best can we remember the APF in our will?A. The best way is to consider supporting us without restrictions, so that funds can be used to address the most immediate needs of the animals. Also, please consider an endowment to the APF, so that in the future, the animals will receive a steady source of income to supplement our fundraisers.

Q. What other types of assets may be given to the APF under our will?A. In addition to gifts of cash or appreciated securities, contributions of life insurance or pension plan assets are beneficial.

For more information, please contact Deb Balliet at (518) 374-3944 Ext. 110.

Tips From APF Canine Academy Trainer

Every year, over 850,000 people will be bitten by a dog. Many of these bites are preventable with a little bit of knowledge and patience, and our APF trainers are here to help! Here are a few easy dog bite prevention tips from APF Canine Academy trainer Kathy Snowden to help you stay safe.

• Do not approach an unfamiliar dog. Allow the dog to approach you.

• Maintain calmness with unfamiliar dogs, especially if they appear fearful or hesitant.

• Do not stare at or lean over an unfamiliar dog, many dogs feel threatened by this.

• Do not corner a growling or scared dog. If cornered, they are more likely to bite.

• Pay attention to the dog’s body language. If you noticed raised fur or tail, excessive yawning or lip licking, or a rigid stance do not approach the dog or make eye contact.

With patience, knowledge and care, many, if not most, dog bites can be prevented. To learn more about canine behavior or to sign up for our Canine Academy, please visit us online at www.animalprotective.org/canine-academy.

We’ve Found Our Forever Home!

Spotlight on our APF Board Member - John MartinoAPF Board Term: January 2011-December 2016

What is your title and profession?I am a mechanical engineer. I’ve been working at Knolls Atomic Lab for 19 years designing and testing submarine and aircraft carrier propulsion systems.

What inspired you to want to be part of the APF and its Board of Directors? My wife and I had a dog named Corky who we loved dearly. Corky developed nasal cancer and we decided to proceed with radiation treatments at Cornell in the hopes of beating the cancer and saving Corky’s life. Unfortunately, the treatment and travel were very stressful for him and he passed away 9 months later. Corky’s life inspired me to find ways to do good. I started volunteering for the APF writing grants and for five years got a great overview of the operations and programs in place. Eventually, I was asked to join the board, which seemed like a natural fit. I wanted to help the organization on a holistic level, and a seat on the board allowed me to do that.

Do you have any pets of your own?Right now we only have one male grey tiger cat. His name is Satchel, we’ve had him for six years and love him dearly. He was adopted from a local rescue, Whiskers.

What are some of your favorite things to do on the weekends to relax?I enjoy reading and playing jazz guitar. I mostly read historical fiction and mysteries. I have played in bands in the past, but right now I mostly play at home.

Why is the work the APF does so important to the community? The Capital Region is fortunate to have a strong animal welfare community. I like to think that the spirit of collaboration is alive and well in our area, and that the APF is central to that. The APF acts as a hub to link all services and programs available across the animal welfare community. The extent of the services and programs we offer allows us to partner with other shelters and rescue groups to create a network of likeminded people and organizations who are working hard to help the companion animals in the Capital District. When we work together we can get more done, and help more animals and people.

Finish this sentence, “If I could have one wish, I’d wish for...”I would wish that all the people who do this good work understood that they are all a part of something bigger. Your contribution is a small piece of something so much bigger; bigger than the issue of the hour, day, or year. People do not go into this field for credit. The individuals that we serve express their gratitude in a unique and non-verbal way. I would wish that all people would always remember that the payoff for this work is the animal that is in their arms at this exact moment.
