Part of the AT&T NYU Connect Ability Challenge, UW-Stout Event Encourages Students and Faculty to Develop Technologies to Empower People with Disabilities

MENOMONIE, Thursday, April 30, 2015 AT&T and UW-Stouts Vocational Rehabilitation Institute (SVRI) announced today they are teaming up to host a Developer Day on campus on Saturday, May 16 as part of the AT&T New York University Connect Ability Challenge launched in honor of the 25th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

A day-long workshop, UW-Stouts Developer Day will give students, faculty and others a chance to learn more about the Connect Ability challenge and how they can compete. The three-month global competition challenges developers and others to create software, wearable devices and other technology solutions aimed at enhancing the lives of people with disabilities. Cash prizes totaling over $100,000 are available for winners.

AT&T is very excited to partner with UW-Stouts Vocational Rehabilitation Institute on this groundbreaking project that challenges innovators around the world to use their creativity to benefit people with disabilities, said Scott T. VanderSanden, president of AT&T Wisconsin. Twenty five years after the Americans with Disabilities Act, weve seen advancements in technology that have revolutionized our society. We believe this challenge can harness those advancements to help further enhance the lives of the disabled.

Launched in New York City in April by AT&T and New York University, the challenge features just four local events at campuses around the country. Those four universities are UW-Stout, Duke University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Johns Hopkins University.

During Developer Day on May 16, participants will learn about the challenge and how to compete. Teams will be formed, and participants will hear from people with disabilities and strategize to create winning solutions.

The challenge directs developers to solve four functional categories and one category addressing public policy for the disabled community: People with sensory disabilities; People in need of mobility solutions; Social and emotional solutions; Solutions for people with communicative and cognitive disabilities; and Solutions impacting policy and society.

To quality, solutions must have a software component. Submissions are due by 4 p.m. Central Time on Wednesday, June 24. Winners will be announced in New York City on July 26, the 25th Anniversary of the ADA.
