The world is changing, perceptions are shifting, and esoteric ideas are finding new

audiences. The notion that a seemingly insignificant personal action can have

great consequences, whether good or ill, has been embraced more strongly by

Western culture than ever before. As people increasingly consider the impact of

their choices, they are seeking new information, ideas, and wisdom for guidance.

We are pleased to offer a wide range of resources to assist in this search—our

Spring 2011 list. Topics such as healing, nutrition, and physical and psychic devel-

opment provide new tools and information for positive change.

Some titles and topics of note:

Three works highlight channeled messages: Opening Our Spiritual Eyes, by

Sri’ama Qala Phoenix, is a book of channeled, spontaneous wisdom that outlines

a plan to clear the karma of the world’s major cities. Cosmic Healing, by Barbara

Brodsky, tells the author’s story of overcoming partial blindness and deafness with

the help of the channeled spirit Aaron, and shares experiences she has had with

the healer John of God. The new work by Patricia Cori, Before We Leave You, pres-

ents channeled messages from whales and dolphins about the urgent need for

human beings to help stop their suffering and possible extinction.

This season’s list also includes Wild Horses, Wild Dreams, new and selected

poems by Lindy Hough, cofounder and publisher at North Atlantic Books. This new

work is the latest in our Io Poetry Series, dedicated to influential poets who have

some association with the Io literary journal, the precursor to North Atlantic Books.

Previous publications in the series include Heavenly Tree, Northern Earth by Gerritt

Lansing and The Intent On by Ken Irby, who was recently honored with the 2010

Shelley Memorial Award.

Change is not limited to the subject matter within the books—technological

change is having an impact on the format of our books as well. New forms of the

written word are available through digital channels across a growing array of

devices and readers. Beginning this season, North Atlantic Books is embarking

on concurrent digital and print publication of selected frontlist titles, while we con-

tinue to build our digital backlist offerings. This season’s titles to be published in

both print and digital formats are:

Before We Leave You by Patricia Cori

Cosmic Healing by Barbara Brodsky

Doctors are More Harmful than Germs by Harvey Bigelsen

Opening Our Spiritual Eyes by Sri’ama Qala Phoenix

Your Psychic Potential by Richard Ireland

We are committed to an active digital publishing program now and in the future

in support of our authors and their ideas.

Exploring Body-Mind CenteringAn Anthology of Experience and Method

Edited by Gill Wright Miller, Pat Ethridge, and Kate Tarlow Morgan

essays on an innovative body-oriented

therapy that creates awareness and

integration through movement, touch,

art, music, visualization, and mindfulness

• Written for body therapists, those interested in movement—especially dancers and athletes—and readers who are heal-ing or seeking to explore their creative process

Exploring Body-Mind Centering features 35 essays on Body-

Mind Centering (BMC), an experiential practice based on the

application of anatomical, physiological, psychophysical, and

developmental principles. Using the work of BMC founder Bon-

nie Bainbridge Cohen as a springboard, the book showcases

diverse situations—from medical illness to blocked creativity—in

which this discipline is applied with transformative results.

Exploring Body-Mind Centering is divided into three sections,

preceded by an introduction framing BMC as a pathway to becom-

ing aware of relationships that exist throughout the body and

mind and using that awareness to act. The first section lays the

groundwork for this process, with real-life experiences and exer-

cises that encourage readers to interact with the text. Section

two contains valuable case stories describing the experiences of

BMC students and practitioners as they work with clients. Sec-

tion three shows how BMC can be integrated with other disci-

plines and practices that include the arts, medicine, and yoga.

The book concludes with a biography of Cohen, a profile of the

School for Body-Mind Centering, and a history of BMC.

Gill Wright Miller is a professor of dance and dance studies at Denison

University in Granville, OH. Pat Ethridge is a licensed acupuncturist

and bodyworker who has served on the BMC Association Board for

sixteen years. Kate Tarlow Morgan graduated from the practitioner

and teacher training pro-

grams at the School for

Body-Mind Centering in

1991. Both Ethridge and

Morgan live in New York

City.

Cultivating QiAn Introduction to Chinese Body-Mind Energetics

Jun Wang, PhD, CMD

A concise guide to improving health and

vitality through Chinese exercises, based

on classical texts

• Qi cultivation exercises can be combined with acupunctureand Chinese herbs to create a total program of healing

• Interest in Chinese medicine is high, with more than 50accredited acupuncture schools in the United States alone

While Chinese acupuncture and herbalism enjoy widespread

popularity in the West, traditional Chinese exercise tech-

niques—with the exception of qi gong—have rarely been taught

outside China. This book is designed to change that. Written by Jun

Wang, a doctor of Chinese medicine, Cultivating Qi draws on clas-

sic Chinese texts to introduce these body-mind healing exercises

to Western readers.

In simple, accessible language, Wang presents three specific

qi exercises: the Yijin Jing, a popular form of calisthenics associ-

ated with both Chinese Buddhist and Daoist traditions; Taiji

Neigong, a series of 34 movements adapted from the Wu-Hao

style of Taiji Quan; and the “Six Healing Breaths,” which com-

bines spoken sounds with movements associated with the six

major vital organs of Chinese medicine.

Written for beginning students of Chinese medicine as well as

laypersons, healthcare practitioners, and martial artists, Culti-

vating Qi includes clear explanations of Chinese medical termi-

nology—and provides the original Chinese characters for more

advanced students—as well as step-by-step instruction in the

three exercises. Accompanied by 100 photographs, these exer-

cises are suitable for all ages and activity levels, and most of them

take no more than 10 to 15 minutes to complete.

Jun Wang, CMD, is an assistant professor at the Institute for Holis-

tic Health Studies at San Francisco State University. Born in Beijing,

China, she obtained a PhD in medical anthropology

from the University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill in

2003. The author of several articles on Asian tradi-

tional medicine in American and British peer-reviewed

journals, she lives in San Francisco.

The Mushroom in Christian ArtThe Identity of Jesus in the Development of Christianity

John A. Rush, PhD

A controversial study of Jesus and early

Christianity that links those narratives

to the mushroom motif in Christian art

• Recalls Christopher Hitchens’s God Is Not Great in challenging traditional Western religious history and exposing its negative effects on our culture

• Includes a DVD with more than 250 striking, full-colorimages of Christian art

In The Mushroom in Christian Art, author John A. Rush uses an

artistic motif to define the nature of Christian art, establish the

identity of Jesus, and expose the motive for his murder. Covering

Christian art from 200 CE (common era) to the present, the author

reveals that Jesus, the Teacher of Righteousness mentioned in the

Dead Sea Scrolls, is a personification of the Holy Mushroom,

Amanita muscaria. The mushroom, Rush argues, symbolizes numer-

ous mind-altering substances—psychoactive mushrooms, cannabis,

henbane, and mandrake—used by the early, more experimentally

minded Christian sects.

Drawing on primary historical sources, Rush traces the history—

and face—of Jesus as being constructed and codified only after

325 CE. The author relates Jesus’s life to a mushroom typology, dis-

covering its presence, disguised, in early Christian art. In the process,

he reveals the ritual nature of the original Christian cults, rites, and

rituals, including mushroom use. The book authoritatively uncov-

ers Jesus’s message of peace, love, and spiritual growth and pro-

poses his murder as a conspiracy by powerful reactionary forces

who would replace that message with the oppressive religious-

political system that endures to this day. Rush’s use of the mush-

room motif as a springboard for challenging mainstream views of

Western religious history is both provocative and persuasive.

John A. Rush, PhD, ND, is a professor of anthropology at Sierra Col-

lege in Rocklin, California. His research has ranged from

religious symbolism in Europe to monuments and

Mayan astronomy in Central America. He is also the

author of Failed God, Spiritual Tattoo, and The Twelve

Gates.

Your Psychic PotentialA Guide to Psychic Development

Richard Ireland / Foreword by Mark Ireland

A fascinating, comprehensive text on

developing your psychic talents from one

of the twentieth century’s most renowned

psychic-mediums

• Ireland was a frequent guest on major radio and televisionshows, most notably on The Steve Allen Show (videoavailable)

• Popular TV shows such as Crossing Over, Medium, America’s

Psychic Challenge, and Sensing Murder attest to theenduring pop-culture embrace of psychic phenomenon

Known as the “Psychic to the Stars,” Richard Ireland coun-

seled celebrities including Mae West, Amanda Blake, and

Glenn Ford. Twelve years after Ireland’s death in 1992, his son

Mark was sent this manuscript, written in 1973. Recently, as Mark

Ireland recounts in the foreword, two psychic-mediums with no

prior knowledge of the project have received messages suggest-

ing that his father deliberately delayed the book’s release until

now, when it would reach an audience more receptive to devel-

oping their psychic talents.

Your Psychic Potential includes a description of the four

spheres/levels of psychic activity, an exploration of the relation-

ship between artistic talents and the psychic, tests and experi-

ments to help unleash psychic ability, a psychic’s diet and

meditative exercises that support the freer flow of abilities, and

tools to counter inhibitory fears. Anyone interested in discover-

ing their extrasensory talents and achieving conscious control

over them is sure to find this an indispensible guide.

Richard Ireland discovered his psychic gifts at the age of five. A min-

ister in the National Association of Spiritualist Churches (NASC), he

founded the interdenominational University of Life church in Phoenix

in 1960 and shortly thereafter began appearing on

radio and TV and in venues across the country. His

autobiography, The Phoenix Oracle, was published in

1970. Mark Ireland, author of Soul Shift: Finding

Where the Dead Go, lives in Scottsdale, AZ.

Theodore Dimon, Jr., EdD, is the founder and director of the Dimon

Institute (dimoninstitute.org) in New York City, where he lives. He is

a widely recognized expert in the Alexander Technique, a practical

method for improving ease and freedom of movement, balance, sup-

port, and coordination. He received both master's and doctorate

degrees in education from Harvard University.

The Body in MotionIts Evolution and Design

Theodore Dimon Jr., EdD

An accessible, illustrated guide to human

anatomical systems and how they work

together to transform every aspect of

human endeavor

• Written for students and professionals in the field of humanmovement—from educators, bodyworkers, and clinicians toactors, dancers, and yoga students and teachers

• By the author of Anatomy of the Moving Body with sales ofover 10,000

In The Body in Motion, author Theodore Dimon confronts a sim-

ple yet crucial task: to make sense of our amazing design. This

comprehensive guide demonstrates the functions and evolution

of specific body systems, explaining how they cooperate to form

an upright, intelligent, tool-making marvel, capable of great tech-

nological and artistic achievement. Enhanced with 162 beauti-

fully rendered full-color illustrations, the book opens with an

introduction to the origins of movement, leading the reader on a

journey through time and evolution—from fish to amphibian,

quadruped to primate—showing how humans became the pre-

eminent moving beings on the planet.

Delving deeper into our upright support system, The Body in

Motion clearly describes the workings of the hands and upper

limbs; the pelvic girdle; the feet and lower limbs; breathing; the

larynx and throat musculature; and more. Central to the book is

the idea that it is our upright posture that makes it possible for

us to move in an infinite variety of ways, to manipulate objects, to

form speech, and to perform the complex rotational movements

that underlie many of our most sophisticated skills. These sys-

tems, Dimon argues persuasively, have helped us build, invent,

create art, explore the world, and imbue life with a contempla-

tive, spiritual dimension that would otherwise not exist.

Opening Our Spiritual EyesKarmic Clearing for Humanity and the Earth

Sri’ama Qala Phoenix

A noted spiritual teacher channels

spontaneous wisdom for transforming

the self, the family, the community, and the

planet through karmic clearing

• Written for readers interested in self-help and personaltransformation, particularly those on a spiritual path

• Will be published in the middle of the author’s 2009–2013prayer project, in which the major cities of the world willundergo karmic clearing in preparation for 2012 and beyond

Karma is generally understood as personal, and clearing karma

is often considered an individual effort, with individual

rewards. In Opening Our Spiritual Eyes, spiritual teacher Sri’ama

Qala Phoenix shows how karmic clearing can also be used in col-

lective healing. Karma is shared within families and communi-

ties, and clearing karma releases it from the etheric body of our

children and future generations. The book was inspired by the

ongoing “Celestial Project,” a four-year global endeavor of Aus-

tralia’s Divine University that began in 2009. The project involves

people gathering worldwide on specific dates to focus on the

karmic cleaning of the etheric body of a major city.

Opening Our Spiritual Eyes draws on the author’s experiences

of meeting the Enlightened Masters, those wise spirit guides who,

through her, present new understandings of the collective karma

held within the world’s primary cities and our etheric bodies—

and how to free ourselves, our families, and our world from it with

grace. Revealing what Sri’ama Qala Phoenix calls “the true nature

of the divine plan for humanity and our Earth,” the book shares

essential keys for how we can become empowered to live in align-

ment with our divine purpose.

During the past fourteen years, Sri’ama Qala Phoenix has received

over 4,000 visitations from the Enlightened Masters.

These divine interventions led her to become an inter-

national teacher and “founding mother” of the Divine

University Project and Academy of Energy Science and

Consciousness in Byron Bay, Australia. She lives in

Byron Bay.

• Articulates a groundbreaking theory of the role of spiritualenergy, revealing a simple, practical way that anyone canaccess miracles in everyday life

• Shows how doing less can give you more

• Sheds light on the nature of life, healing, and death and thelimitations of current approaches to wellness

The modern world is largely focused on the physical—on the

appetites and senses, on doing and having—which can blind

us to the spiritual realm. In Natural Chi Movement, Tienko Ting

articulates a theory of life that unites the physical and spiritual

worlds. He suggests there is nothing to learn or master; each of

us—and every living thing—is a product of the merging of phys-

ical and spiritual energy, already endowed with the capacity to

thrive and heal. Activation of our chi is the component to well-

ness that most of us have been missing. It is the essence of the

practice of Natural Chi Movement.

Natural Chi Movement guides modern seekers in embracing

their spiritual nature and accessing the boundless potential of

energy. Doing so, says Ting, can also help address global prob-

lems from health care to ecology. Featuring 18 illustrations, the

book draws on Chinese history, philosophy, and medicine, as well

as from the author’s own work with spiritual energy. Written in a

simple, lucid style, Natural Chi Movement sheds much-needed

light on the nature of the energy that makes up all life, opening up

a world of extraordinary healing for everyone.

A leader of Natural Chi Movement workshops throughout the U.S.,

Europe, and Asia, Tienko Ting lives in Connecticut.

The Heron Dance Book of Love and Gratitude

Edited by Roderick MacIver

Through evocative watercolors and

thoughtful writings by major authors,

artists, and thinkers, this beautiful gift

book reminds readers of life’s essentials

• Contributors include Joseph Campbell, Michael Lerner,Elizabeth Kübler-Ross, Alice Walker, Albert Einstein,Katharine Hepburn, Dostoevsky, and Walt Whitman

• Nearly 20,000 copies of previous editions sold

• MacIver’s weekly newsletter, A Pause for Beauty, has morethan 25,000 subscribers

In The Heron Dance Book of Love and Gratitude, Roderick

MacIver uses text and pictures to encourage readers to dis-

cover that “all-transcendent meaning” in their daily lives. This

wise and comforting book celebrates the open heart and the

beauty and mystery that surround us through a wide array of

voices and perspectives. MacIver weaves inspirational poetry and

prose with his shimmering nature watercolors to create a book

that helps readers discover—and honor—love and gratitude.

These quotes from men and women span time and geogra-

phy, but share a sense of hard-won wisdom. Henry Miller finds

unexpected late-life solace in embracing the simple quality of

trust. Gabriel García Márquez muses, “If I knew that this would

be the last time you pass through this door, I’d embrace you, kiss

you, and call you back for one more.” Helen Keller says, “God is

in me as the sun is in the color and fragrance of a flower.” This

book is equally rewarding when sampled or read cover to cover as

a respite from the pressures of modern life.

Roderick MacIver is a Canadian-born watercolor artist whose work

has been used by wilderness protection groups and nonprofit organ-

izations in their outreach efforts. In 1995 he founded

Heron Dance (www.herondance.org), a nonprofit

organization that celebrates the human connection

to nature through art and words. He lives in North

Ferrisburgh, VT.

This inviting guide to the raw food lifestyle offers

everything from raw kitchen basics and simple meals

to gourmet recipes with flair

From the Introduction

“This book is the result of an idea whose time has come, an

idea that most of us intuitively know and recognize—that

to be healthy, happy, naturally nourished, and completely

connected to our surroundings is our birthright. After years

of eating raw foods and superfoods and running raw food

courses, we have been inspired by a growing number of

people who are becoming aware of the amazing transfor-

mative and healing potential of living foods. This book is

a natural expression of our experience. We have lived and

practiced the concepts and recipes in this book, and con-

tinue to do so joyfully.”

From Chapter Two, Food and Health

“When we eat what nature intended—natural whole foods

in their original pristine state, untampered with by indus-

try—our bodies heal themselves. Our bodies are designed

to regenerate, but without the proper building blocks and

nutrients they cannot. They begin to break down. People

worldwide are sick and tired of being sick and tired. Cov-

ering up symptoms is not healing. We need to reach for a

deeper level of healing. When we truly nourish the body,

the body stays healthy.”

Peter and Beryn Daniel are tradition-

ally trained chefs who became pio-

neers of the raw and superfoods

movement in South Africa. The cou-

ple teaches courses throughout the

country and Beryn Daniel regularly

writes articles for South Africa’s Jour-

nal of Natural Medicine. They live in

Cape Town.

Bagua Swimming Body Palms

Wang Shujin / Translated by Kent Howard and Chen Hsiao-Yen

A complete illustrated guide to a rare

martial art, translated into English for

the first time

• A follow-up to Bagua Linked Palms, which was praised byBruce Frantzis (The Power of Internal Martial Arts and Chi) andDan Miller (Pa Kua Chang Journal) for its insight and accuracy

• Includes step-by-step instruction in the eight palm changesof Bagua Swimming Palms

Bagua Swimming Body Palms is the second book written by

Wang Shujin, one of the world’s foremost exponents of Chi-

nese internal martial arts and a renowned expert of Bagua Zhang.

This volume continues the process of bringing Master Wang’s

important art to Western readers. More intricate than the Linked

Palms form, Swimming Body Palms helps practitioners achieve

fluent body mechanics and the ability to connect and flow from

one movement to the next with power. Master Wang, who taught

Swimming Palms to only a few advanced students, described it

as “swim-walking,” or swimming around the body.

Bagua Swimming Body Palms offers a thorough grounding in

the basics of Bagua principles and practice, and illuminates the

connection between the cultural meanings of the I Ching and the

physical movements of Bagua Zhang. The photographs from the

Chinese book are reprinted, along with hundreds of new photo-

graphs of translator Kent Howard demonstrating the exercises in

greater detail. Sifu Howard provides extensive commentary on

Master Wang’s writings, and Daoist master Huang Jinsheng con-

tributes a thoughtful essay on Master Wang’s spiritual practice

with the esoteric Daoist sect Yi Guan Dao. The book’s engaging

style, fidelity to the Chinese text, and comprehensiveness make

it a welcome addition to any martial arts library.

Master Wang Shujin died in 1978. Kent Howard is a nationally known

writer and martial arts teacher. ChenHsiao-Yen, his wife, is an artist, trans-

lator, and writer from Taiwan. The cou-

ple lives in Chico, CA.

AtlantisThe Lost Continent Finally Found

Arysio Santos

One of the world’s great mysteries is

solved in this gripping analysis based on

history, science, folklore, and ancient

writings

• The first book to identify the civilization’s location in theSouth China Sea, near Indonesia

• Atlantis captivates the popular imagination, fromblockbuster video games like Tomb Raider to films such asDisney’s Atlantis: The Lost Empire and dozens of contempo-rary books and TV shows

• Includes 30 evocative line-art figures, maps, and cosmograms

The late author Arysio Santos was a highly regarded climatol-

ogist, geologist, and nuclear physicist. He was also a scholar

of history, folklore, languages, and the occult. In this ground-

breaking study of Atlantis, he draws on all these disciplines, as

well as ancient maps, Plato’s dialogues, and folkloric narratives,

to provide the most compelling case yet of the disappearance of

an entire civilization.

Professor Santos demonstrates that Plato’s dating of Atlantis’s

disappearance in 11,600 BP (before present) precisely corresponds

to the catastrophic end of the Pleistocene Ice Age, as well as a his-

toric flood event of cataclysmic proportions. The rising of the sea

level by nearly 500 feet, he argues, submerged continent-sized

lands—including Atlantis, which he connects with the biblical Gar-

den of Eden. Provocative chapters cover such topics as the conti-

nent’s appearance in ancient maps, Indonesia as the true site of

Eden, American interpretations of Atlantis, the four rivers of para-

dise, and more, giving a clear form to the ghostly outline of this

fabled land.

A gifted linguist whose mastery of Greek, Latin, Sanskrit, and Dravida

facilitated his lifelong study of Atlantis, Arysio Santosalso ran the most popular website on the subject,

www.atlan.org, with more than 2 million visitors to date.

Cosmic HealingA Spiritual Journey with Aaron and John of God

Barbara Brodsky

A prominent dharma teacher shares her

remarkable journey of healing, aided by a

channeled spirit and faith healer

• Brodsky’s previous self-published work with Aaron, Presence,

Kindness, and Freedom, was praised by Ram Dass for “itssophistication and its lightness, its clarity and its beauty”

• Brodsky maintains an active teaching schedule around thecountry and has been featured in two episodes of NationalPublic Radio’s This American Life

With the onset of sudden profound deafness at the age of

29, Barbara Brodsky set out on a quest to understand the

nature of illness and healing, examining the interrelationship of

mind and body and our capacity to transcend limitation. Asking the

questions What is healing? Who and what heals? Why do some

people heal while others do not? she discusses karma and free

will, our habit of identifying with a limited sense of self, and our

potential for greater healing.

A longtime Buddhist practitioner who began meditation in the

’60s, Brodsky discovered a new path on her healing journey when

she began channeling the spirit Aaron in 1989. Based on three

decades of meticulously kept journals, Cosmic Healing weaves

together Brodsky’s Buddhist teachings, channeled material from

Aaron, exercises for the reader, and an account of her experiences

with the healer known as John of God (João Teixeira de Faria) at

his teaching center, Casa de Dom Inácio, in Brazil. While Cosmic

Healing is channeled in part and has deep roots in traditional

dharma, it is at heart a universal story of human growth and dis-

covery. Old beliefs limit us every day. But as Brodsky discovered

and teaches, we can learn to recognize such limiting beliefs, tran-

scend them, and live a deeper truth.

Barbara Brodsky is founder and head dharma teacher of the Deep

Spring Center for Meditation and Spiritual Inquiry, an inter-

faith center offering Vipassana meditation and Tibetan

dzogchen teachings. She lives in Ann Arbor, MI.

Doctors Are More Harmful Than GermsThe Truth About Chronic Illness

Harvey Bigelsen, MD with Lisa Haller

An indictment of the medical

establishment and a call for change in

how we view—and treat—chronic illness

• Studies show an average of 195,000 people in the U.S. dieannually due to potentially preventable medical errors

• A 2002 survey by the National Center for Health Statisticsindicated that nearly half of all U.S. adults have used someform of complementary or alternative medicine

Most people would consider a knife wound to the stomach

a serious health risk, but a similar scalpel wound in an

operating room is often shrugged off. In Doctors Are More Harm-

ful Than Germs, Dr. Harvey Bigelsen explains how today’s med-

ical doctors overprescribe surgery and ignore its long-term health

implications. Any invasive medical procedure, he argues—includ-

ing colonoscopies and root canals—creates inflammation in the

body, leading to serious and long-lasting health problems.

Inflammation, according to Dr. Bigelsen, is the real cause of

all chronic disease (persistent or long-lasting illness). Noting that

Western medicine has yet to “cure” a single chronic disease,

Bigelsen points to a new paradigm: one that treats each patient

as an individual (rather than as a set of symptoms), avoids fur-

ther damage to the body through surgery, and looks for the root

cause of chronic disease in past damage done to the patient’s

body—whether caused by a bad fall or a scalpel. Provocatively

written and radical in its approach, Doctors Are More Harmful

Than Germs challenges readers to rethink everything they believe

about illness and how to treat it.

Harvey Bigelsen, MD, helped found the American Holistic Medical

Association (AHMA) in 1978, and three years later helped to write the

Arizona law allowing alternative medical practitioners

to be licensed and judged by their peers rather than

by mainstream doctors. A frequent lecturer for alter-

native health organizations, he lives in Nevada City,

CA. Medical writer Lisa Haller lives in St. Paul, MN.

Cranio-Sacral-SELF-WavesA Scientific Approach to Craniosacral Therapy

Olaf J. Korpiun, PhD

A radical new theory of craniosacral

movement as a reflection of the

universe’s structured wave rhythms

• Includes nearly 100 detailed photos and illustrations thatvisually demonstrate the author’s research findings

• There are more than 100,000 registered craniosacraltherapists worldwide with 65,000 in North America alone

Designed to release pain and trauma as well as support the

body’s healing through a gentle, hands-on approach, Cran-

iosacral Therapy (CST) has become an increasingly popular modal-

ity. In Cranio-Sacral-SELF-Waves, CST expert Olaf Korpiun expands

on William Sutherland’s famous theory of the “breath of life,” an

unexplained power that generates corrections from within our

bodies without the influence of external forces applied by the

therapist. This new theory, drawing also on physics, anatomy,

physiology, embryology, and osteopathy, finds scientific evidence

that the original source of craniosacral movement is a resonant

movement from an energy field in the universe: it is the oscillat-

ing waves of rhythm in the universe, he argues, that control all

biological rhythms within all living beings. Dr. Korpiun presents

his method of working with patterns of motion in the body, includ-

ing extremely slow frequencies of movement which he calls

“Cranio-Sacral-SELF-Waves (“SELF” standing for “Super-Extreme-

Low-Frequency”). By following his approach, says the author,

bodyworkers and other health practitioners can work in a more

focused and productive way, utilizing practical techniques for

treating the widespread rhythmic imbalances that lead to physi-

cal and psychological problems.

Olaf Korpiun, PhD, obtained his certification in CST from the presti-

gious Upledger Institute. He has also studied Visceral Manipulation,

Mechanical Link, Muscle Energy Technique, Primal

Scream Therapy, Swedish massage, Rebalancing, Shi-

atsu, and Alchemical Hypnotherapy. A popular work-

shop leader in CST throughout Europe, he lives in

Munich, Germany.

Foundations in Craniosacral Biodynamics, Volume IThe Breath of Life and Fundamental Skills

Franklyn Sills with Cherionna Menzam

An authoritative text on biodynamic

craniosacral therapy, an increasingly

popular somatic approach to mental,

physical, and spiritual well-being

• From one of the leading experts in the field and author ofCraniosacral Biodynamics, the first BCST training manualever published

• Includes nearly 100 black and white illustrations

Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy (BCST) is commonly seen

as the spiritual approach to craniosacral therapy (CST); in

fact, BCST as taught by Franklyn Sills, the pioneer in the field, is

quite different from conventional CST. Biodynamic work is based

on the development of perceptual skills where the practitioner

learns to become sensitive to subtle respiratory motions called

primary respiration and also to the power of spontaneous healing.

Through the Breath of Life, which, Sills asserts, echoes the Holy

Spirit in the Judeo-Christian tradition, bodhicitta in Buddhism,

and the Tai Chi in Taoism, students of BCST learn to enter a state

of presence oriented to the client’s inherent ability to heal.

In Foundations in Craniosacral Biodynamics, Sills offers stu-

dents and practitioners an in-depth, step-by-step guide to the

development of perceptual and clinical skills with specific clini-

cal exercises and explorations to help students and practitioners

learn the essentials of a biodynamic approach. Individual chapters

cover such topics as holism and biodynamics; mid-tide, Long Tide,

Dynamic Stillness and stillpoint process; the motility of tissues

and the central nervous system; transference and the shadow;

shamanistic resonances; and more.

Franklyn Sills is the co-director of the Karuna Institute, a retreat and

teaching center that offers trainings in Biodynamic Craniosacral Ther-

apy as well as an MA in Core Process Psychotherapy.

The author of four books published by North Atlantic,

he lives in Devon, UK. Cherionna Menzam, PhD, con-

tributed a chapter to Foundations in Craniosacral Bio-

dynamics. She lives in Santa Monica, CA.

The third installment in North Atlantic Books’

Io Poetry Series, which celebrates influential

figures of modern American poetry

Advance praise

“Lindy Hough follows her words along the path of the

poem. . . . I’m delighted to follow along, the poems

picking a way through intellectual, cultural and personal

histories. They are hers but they are mine too. These wild

horses, these wild dreams—she’s become very wise in

the making of her poems.”—Bobby Byrd, publisher,

author of White Panties, Dead Friends

“She constructs meaning from gardens, marriage,

motherhood, meditation, and movement until there is ‘a

self one can live with.’ Hough reminds us what it is to

search and ultimately to find.”—Summer Brenner, author

I-5: A Novel of Crime, Transport, and Sex

“Hough speaks her life, full of quick motion and oblique

meetings and desperate accommodations. She makes us

remember that she is a dancer—the one kind of artist

who has to be all over the place to be at home. For all the

dance, there is Yankee toughness here. . . . We’ve had to

wait a long time for this collection of her work, and it’s

worth the wait.”—Robert Kelly, author of May Day

Lindy Hough was cofounder of the sem-

inal literary magazine Io, which began

in 1964, and is cofounder and publisher

of North Atlantic Books. She has pub-

lished four books of poetry and her fic-

tion and poems have appeared in

numerous literary magazines. She co-

edited Nuclear Strategy and the Code

of the Warrior, a collection of anti-

nuclear literature. She recently finished

a novel called Shades of Blue. She lives

in Maine and northern California.

life, motherhood, materialism and capital-

ism, and psychic/spiritual issues

• By the cofounder of the seminal literary magazine Io, whichpublished the works of Robert Duncan, Robert Creeley,Denise Levertov, Gary Snyder, Jayne Ann Phillips, and othermajor writers and poets

Wild Horses, Wild Dreams follows a trajectory from the early

seventies to the present, giving a generous overview of

Lindy Hough’s intellectual world and emotionally evocative lan-

guage. The book samples poems from previously published books

along with new poems. Selections from Changing Woman, Psy-

che, The Sun in Cancer, and Outlands & Inlands show a delight

in language and the transformative nature of art, grounded in

place and sensuous detail. The narrator of Changing Woman is

a young mother in her early twenties, steeped in the detail of life,

questioning and ironic as she puzzles out truth and authenticity

in Maine. In Psyche, she maps the inner life of a Vermont college

town and its inhabitants, in a conceit based on Helen of Troy. In The

Sun in Cancer, Hough begins to show a strong involvement in

Buddhism and consciousness as she explores life on the West

and East coasts. In Outlands & Inlands, dreams, dance, and obses-

sion map changing human dilemmas. In the new poems, Hough

continues her account of an attempt to square external reality

with inner, digging deeper into human dynamics as history folds

in on contemporary concerns. Linguistic nuance, surprising syn-

tax, and the grounding of the breath poetics of projective verse

are all richly present here, and show why she has gained acclaim

as an important modern poet.

• A valuable resource for mycologists, mushroom hunters, and wild-crafters as well as consumers and practitioners of natural health care

• The author is a retired clinical herbalist with more than 40years of experience in natural remedies

• Features a foreword by mycologist Solomon Wasser, editorof the International Journal of Medicinal Mushrooms

In The Fungal Pharmacy, noted herbalist Robert Rogers intro-

duces readers to more than 300 species of medicinal mush-

rooms and lichens found in North America. These plants, Rogers

explains, have the capacity to heal both the body and, through

the process of myco-remediation, the planet itself. Throughout

the book, he documents their success in optimizing the immune

system and treating a wide range of acute and chronic diseases,

including cardiovascular, respiratory, and liver problems, blood

sugar disorders, cancer, and obesity.

Entries discuss the mushroom or lichen’s medicinal traits and

properties, including active chemical components, preparation

methods (including extracts, essences, and essential oils), and

historical as well as modern-day usage. Two hundred full-color

photos and thorough descriptions make identification easy for

the reader. Rogers also delves into the cultural, religious, and lit-

erary significance of each mushroom, featuring fascinating tid-

bits about each one’s etymology and history.

Robert Rogers teaches plant medicine at Grant MacEwan University

and the Northern Star College of Mystical Studies.

Chair of the Herb and Plant Research Centre for Cross

Cultural Studies of Health and Healing at the Univer-

sity of Alberta, he lives in Edmonton, Canada.

Before We Leave YouMessages from the Great Whales and the Dolphin Beings

Patricia Cori

A renowned channeler conveys a

desperate cry for help—and a pathway to

global transformation—from endangered

sea mammals

• Written for the author’s many fans as well as environmental-ists, nature and animal lovers, and the spiritual community

• Includes 18 full-color, detachable Cetacean meditationcards similar to tarot and angel cards

• Interest in this subject is high, with The Cove, a film aboutthe horrific dolphin slaughter in Japan, winning the 2010Oscar for documentary feature

In November 2008 Patricia Cori was in Jordan teaching a work-

shop on the threats to planetary ecology when a life-changing

event occurred. A community of Cetaceans—“a choir of whales

and dolphins,” as she describes it—interrupted her talk with a

frantic plea for help. Cori could suddenly see a devastating scene

of suffering, a collective grieving of scores of whales and dolphins

“frenzied, lost, and dying.” This was the first of numerous con-

tacts, many of them followed, she would learn, by mass suicides.

This terrifying incident was also a dramatic call for change. In this

moving book, Cori explains the immense potential for human

beings to save these majestic creatures and, in the process, save

ourselves and our world. For the first time, we read the commu-

nications of the Cetaceans, their story of devotion and love for the

planet and for all of life. The message is clear: We must realize

that our global behavior is altering the course of Gaia’s progres-

sion to the next dimension. Without the music of these species—

without the whale and dolphin song—we face a dire future in which

our destined higher consciousness cannot materialize. Before We

Leave You is a roadmap to that higher future—if we act now.

Patricia Cori is a best-selling author, spiritual leader,

and international figure in the New Age/New Thought

movement. Her many books and her CD of meditations

have enjoyed worldwide acclaim. She lives in Rome.

From Chapter One

“The cutting edge of trauma treatment today shows an increase in alternative

and integrative intervention strategies. Newly emerging therapies—including art,

dance, music, and theater-based intervention—are beginning to integrate move-

ment into treatment. Many of these interventions focus on an integration of the

mind and body for healing. Yoga-based intervention is at the frontier of trauma

treatment in promoting mind/body healing.”

Advance Praise

“The trauma-sensitive yoga developed by the authors through practical/clinical

experience, and described carefully, practically, and systematically in this book,

incorporates the best that yoga has to offer with what will benefit trauma patients

safely and comfortably.”—Sat Bir Khalsa, PhD, Assistant Professor of Medicine at

Harvard Medical School, Director of Research for the Kundalini Research Institute

Praise for Waking the Tiger: Healing Trauma

“Every life contains difficulties we are not prepared for. Read,

learn, and be prepared for life and healing.”—Bernard S. Siegal,

MD, author of Love, Medicine & Miracles and Peace, Love, and

Healing

“Levine effectively argues that the body is healer and that psy-

chological scars of trauma are reversible—but only if we listen

to the voices of our body.”—Stephen W. Porges, PhD, Professor of

Yoga and TraumaReclaiming Your Body

David Emerson and Elizabeth Hopper, PhD

• An estimated five million people suffer from post-traumaticstress disorder (PTSD) in the U.S. alone

• Based on a successful program offered by the Trauma Centerin Brookline, Massachusetts

Survivors of trauma—whether from abuse, accident, or war—

can end up profoundly wounded, betrayed by their body for

failing to get them to safety and for causing them pain. In order to

fully heal from trauma, a connection must be made with oneself,

including one’s body. The trauma-sensitive yoga described in this

book expands beyond traditional talk therapies that only focus

on the mind to bring the body into the healing process. This allows

trauma survivors to cultivate a friendly relationship to their body

through gentle breath, mindfulness, and movement practices.

Yoga and Trauma begins with an in-depth description of trauma

and PTSD, and moves on to the features and key themes of

trauma-sensitive yoga, a modified yoga program developed by

yoga teacher David Emerson and medical doctor Bessel van der

Kolk. The book identifies the five areas that require modification

in order for a class to be trauma-sensitive. Mindfulness, breath-

ing, and yoga exercises that can be used by home practitioners,

yoga teachers, and therapists are offered as a way to cultivate

patience, tolerance, and an increased awareness of the self.

Rounded out by valuable case stories, the book presents individ-

ual plans for working with different populations including mili-

tary veterans, children, teenagers, and the elderly. An illustrated

appendix shows specific trauma-sensitive yoga poses.

David Emerson is the director of yoga services at the Trauma Center

(traumacenter.org). In 2003 he codesigned the Trauma Center Yoga

Program that includes classes and teacher training programs. He

lives in Cambridge, MA. Elizabeth Hopper, PhD, is a licensed clinical

psychologist specializing in

traumatic stress and works as

the associate director of train-

ing at the Trauma Center. She

lives in Somerville, MA.

Unknown Capoeira, Volume TwoA History of the Brazilian Martial Art

Mestre Ricardo Cachorro

A comprehensive illustrated history of

capoeira, with surprising new information

on how and where it evolved

• The second book in a series by a pioneer who helpedintroduce capoeira to the United States

• Of interest not only to capoeiristas but also to students ofhistory, anthropology, art, music, and theater

Capoeira’s unique blend of martial art, dance, and thrilling

sport has made it an increasingly popular activity worldwide.

But its origins have been shrouded in mystery, and its complex

history not well understood. For volume two of his Unknown

Capoeira series, Mestre Ricardo Cachorro has done extensive

archival research to shed light on these shadowy areas. Reach-

ing back as far as the year 1415, Cachorro documents the cultures

and individuals that gave birth to—and helped alter and rede-

fine—capoeira. He uncovers its beginnings in the dramatic saga

of the Akindele family, who lived in a storied Yoruba kingdom in

pre-Colonial Africa, and in the vibrant culture of newly explored

Bahia de Todos os Santos in 1531. Cachorro continues his inves-

tigation with the Feitorias and Capitanias—the legendary sugar-

cane mills of the seventeenth century—an important but

little-known cradle of capoeira. He explores the historical and cul-

tural aspects of each significant period of the discipline’s devel-

opment from ancient Africa to present-day Brazil, in the process

profiling its key contemporary players and answering such long-

standing questions as why capoeira did not emerge in other

enslaved countries of the New World.

Mestre Ricardo Cachorro is a red-cord graduate from Grupo Bantus

de Capoeira at Morro do Pavão e Pavãozinho. The first Master of the

YMCA Capoeira Group in Governor’s Island in 1975,

he became a certified Mestre in 1976 at age 21. That

same year, he introduced capoeira to the U.S. in a live

television show. He lives in Rio de Janeiro.

Death on the BarrensA True Story of Courage and Tragedy in the Canadian Arctic

George James Grinnell

In 1955 six young men set off with Art Moffatt, an experienced

wilderness canoeist, on a daring expedition through the remote

Arctic region of Northern Canada. With their youthful energy and

naïve sense of adventure, the group was not prepared for what

they would encounter in this formidable landscape. . . . “Superbly

illustrated, this work represents the best that humankind and

nature have to offer: courage, beauty, and the challenge to survive.

Recommended for all readers of true adventure or memoir.”

TITLE INDEX

AUTHOR INDEX
