What is Vuma?Pearson is proud to introduce Vuma, our new reading instruction programme with stories that have been developed and written in the mother tongue.

Fun, age-appropriate stories centre around a diverse group of loveable characters to whom all South African children can relate. This finely-levelled reading instruction programme has been specifically developed for teaching and assessing reading in the Foundation Phase.

Each story has been individually developed around the structure and vocabulary of the language for which it was written.

The Vuma Reading Instruction Programme has a number of different resources that work together to offer a comprehensive reading solution. Vuma is currently available for Afrikaans, isiXhosa, isiZulu and Sepedi Home Language as well as English First Additional Language.

The core resources are: finely-levelled Readers with stories that

will delight both boys and girls

engaging Workbooks with activities to entrench reading and comprehension skills

comprehensive Teacher’s Guides with detailed guidance, lesson plans and assessments.

Vuma LevelsThe Vuma Readers are divided into levels from 1 to 12. The number of books at each level gives learners enough practice to consolidate what they have learnt before moving to the next level.

The increase in complexity from one level to the next is very gradual so that learners are always able to experience success and remain motivated to continue reading.

Each level is defined by: the number of words or sentences

types and complexity of language structures and artwork

text features

the predictability of the text.

This should help you to match each learner to the correct level so that they read in order to build their vocabulary, grammatical understanding and, importantly, confidence and enjoyment when reading.

The Home Language Readers include a Starter Level which consists of simple stories without words.

Level 1: 1 word or 2-word phrases per page; strong visual cues. Lots of repetition.

Level 2: 1 – 2 phrases / short sentences per page; strong visual cues. Introduces question sentence structure. Lots of repetition.

Level 3: 1 – 2 longer phrases or sentences per page; strong visual cues. Has question sentences. Lots of repetition.

Level 4: 1 – 2 varied phrases / sentences per page. Has question sentences. Lots of repetition.

Level 5: 1 – 3 sentences per page; strong visual cues. Some direct speech. Lots of repetition.

Level 6: 1 – 4 sentences per page; strong visual cues. Direct speech and past tense. Lots of repetition.

Level 7: 1 paragraph (1 – 5 sentences) per page; strong visual cues. Uses direct speech and past tense. Introduces information-style texts.

Level 8: 1 – 2 short paragraphs; some visual cues on each page. Varied text styles.

Level 9: 1 – 2 short paragraphs; more complex language structures and some visual cues. Varied text styles.

Vuma ReadersEach and every Vuma Reader is bright, beautiful, engaging and tells a story.

Each Reader in the Vuma series has been specially developed to carefully introduce a small number of new reading words to learners.

Learners are provided plenty of opportunities to practise reading these words in other stories. The words that are introduced are high frequency words as well as content or concept words.

Each Reader has: a pre-reading section that provides brief,

simple tips and activities on how to introduce the book to learners before they begin to read.
