In this 50th Anniversary issue of The Bell Tower, we reflect on our history. We celebrate the College’s achievements of the past and acknowledge how they have shaped our success today and positioned us for the future.

As we move into our next 50 years, we continue our focus on creating an environment that promotes lifelong learning. We are committed to improving the student experience, being a valuable resource to the broader community, and enhancing academic leadership among community colleges.

As our enrollment continues to grow—with over 36,000 people taking part in a Schoolcraft-sponsored learning experience each year—we remain a center that nurtures and supports our students by helping them to stay in college, experience success and graduate in larger numbers. This comes at a time when the American community college system has been given an unprecedented opportunity to help bring the nation out of economic crisis by providing more people with higher education.

As alumni, you are living testaments to the work we strive to accomplish...transforming lives through the power of education. You are the heart of our past and of our future. It is your drive and determination that defines the College’s pastand created the quality and excellence of the institution today, and is precisely what will take the College Ever Upward.

Sincerely,

Conway A. Jeffress, Ph.D., President Schoolcraft College

I am honored to lead Schoolcraft College as we celebrate our 50th Anniversary. A half century has gone by and the Schoolcraft experience remains the same—transforming lives. In doing so, we have stayed true to our founders’ aspirations.

SCHOOLCRAFT COLLEGE

The Bell Tower 50th Anniversary EditionThis unique issue of the Bell Tower chronicles the historical timelineand events for each decade of our last 50 years, including our incredible growth, business/community partnerships, sprawling campus and satellite locations to accommodate burgeoning enrollment, and innovative technology.

We honor Schoolcraft’s 50-year legacy of serving the community, whether it is responding to the changing environment of the digital age and a globalized economy, preparing our students to respond to the dizzying pace of change, or positioning ourselves to compete in a global market without losing our essential local character.

But most of all, we honor you. Over our 50 year history, more than 300,000 of you—our alumni—have been educated at Schoolcraft College. Each of you ensures that we are valued and that our legacy continues. In tribute, we are highlighting 50 past and present students as well as instructors and administrators who have shaped our history over the last five decades and are vital to our continuing success.

We thank all of you, and invite you to join us in celebrating 50 years Ever Upward.

mission by providing funding for student scholarships,

capital improvements and program enhancement grants.

The

SCHOOLCRAFT

COLLEGEHymn:

All hail to thee, Oh, Gold and Blue;We lift our voices in praise of thee.Semper Altius Aspice.May knowledge, hope and vision here begin.

The Schoolcraft College Hymn was first performed at the campus dedication service in April 1965. Semper Altius Aspice, meaning “Look Ever Upward,” is the inspiration for the College’s 2011 Annual Fundraising Campaign theme—Ever Upward: A Blueprint for Tomorrow.

The Foundation has awarded more than $4.5 million in scholarships since it was formed in 1966, and has provided more than $1.2 million in grants to help faculty and staff to develop innovative ways to improve the campus and the learning environment. The Foundation has supported major capital projects, including the new Biomedical Technology Center, the library renovation and the VisTaTech Center.

The Foundation is governed by a Board of Governors with membership from the community, college and alumni. If you would like to know more about the Schoolcraft College Foundation or to make a donation, please call 734-462-4455 or visit the Foundation website at:

The campaign will focus on funding priorities determined by careful planning and projections of the College’s

future needs. This includes strengthening Schoolcraft’s position for future growth and enhancing our capacity to provide high-quality education. We encourage you to help to shape the future of Schoolcraft College. We will send you details about how to support the campaign in the near future.
